Dude, words cannot express how grateful I am. I have struggled time and time again with ILS Landings but i'm more than happy to say your video finally helped me out. Definitely earned a sub. Thanks!
@@luijpenp Hi , I don't have a joystick , all I am using is the laptop keyboard and finding it difficult to do taxing. Any videos, tips or suggestions will be highly appreciated
Wow, this was really, really good. I play a lot of FSX on the Vatsim network but I don't use ILS and simply just use ATC. So I was telling myself I should learn how to use the ILS, and I watched over 5 videos, and none of them were that good tutorials, this one was a really, precise tutorial really explaining what each system does. Thanks!
I've seen quite a few text and videos on ILS landing, but none of them were even close to this one. Yours is clear' detailed and accurate. Especially the point were you tell us to activate the APP button, when the pink diamond is aligned with the altitude center line. Thank you very much, sure I'll subscribe. Yigal
You have no idea how much this tutorial really helped me out! I flew from CYYZ to CYOW, and the CYYZ to KJFK to try out your techniques, and it really did help out a whole lot! Thank you for your videos!
Another great tutorial. Warts and all. Much better than the sterile perfect tutorials which make me feel like OMG I am going to quit. Your laid-back approach and being yourself is wonderful, and confidence inspiring. Thanks for taking the time and effort to help we Novice Virtual Pilots. :)
At about 8:56 you did a manual heading tweak and mentioned it will follow the purple line. How is the plane following the purple line? What is guiding the plane?
KevinOrlando93 but that runway is allmost everyday in use for landing.. if you google schiphol runway in use.. you get a website that show actual runway in use and they use most of the time that runway for landing only and you can use radar24 or simular sites to see actual landing and takeoff and you will see all most every plane lands there
Okay thanks for the video! So when I do flight plan, and do waypoints just to make sure I approach smoothly to the airport, the GPS will follow it including the waypoints I added?
Whenever I switch to NAV, the diamond is already well below the white line, meaning it won't decend down the feather when I turn on approach hold. I'm not sure what I need to change to make the diamond line up correctly.
You know you don't have to keep the NAV1 speaker on. All the button does is turn the speaker on and off - it does not activate the signal. Provided you are moving towards the NAVAID, you only need to hear the Morse code once or twice to insure 1) you are at a point where the signal can be received from the desired station, 2) the station is the one you want. You can then press the button again to turn off the speaker. Thanks for the video, it helped familiarize me with the autopilot on this airplane.
...I was flying FSX regularly a few years ago, then quit...now I want to get back into it and forgot a lot..is there any site someone can recommend for direct help on using FSX...thanks much
While landing can you turn off the ident button? Or does the morse code have to continue beeping until touchdown? I have tried turning it off and it still worked but sometimes it doesn't so i'm unsure if that is the reason, thank you
Hello - DisabledGamer - - thanks for the information with your prior video and this video - I am a little confused after watching this 2nd video about the radio stack and the morse code and that is, should one be hearing the morse code after initially inputting the frequency information for the intended landing airport or merely when in range of the desired landing airport?? thanks
Hi. I'm fairly new to FSX but I have now mastered ILS approach landings. My question is, I want to fly to Princess Juliana airport on St. Maarten. Is this airport visual approach only or is there another way to land using autopilot or whatever other method can be used. Thanks in advance for any reply or any comments.
I always set up the course, ils frequency and com before I take off. Also I'm not sure what the advantage is to waiting to engage the gps in the autopilot until you manually steer it toward your gps heading. I've never had a problem engaging the gps as soon as I take off, but I guess it's just personal preference for that.
I noticed when i turn on nav it turns my altitude hold button off then my plane just lowers and lowers till it crashes why did urs not i had to turn it bk on to stop this
I've done a landing in rio de janeiro in which I didn't have the "altitude diamond" showing, even though I had the ILS set up properly just like you've shown in this video. Do you know anyreason why that may have happened?
new to FSX and still having trouble following the exact AP steps when close to picking up the ILS for landing the 737....can someone post the exact steps needed after I have programmed my GPS flight plan...EXAMPLE: I have my plane on course for my selected ILS airport RNY and when very near the airport and my plane just fly's right over it and sometimes circles back around....thanks guys....
Yes. The glide slope comes up at an angle from the ground. You need to fly level such that you intercept the glide slope. As you approach it, the glide slope is actually above you, but because you're approaching the runway, as you approach, the distance that the glide slope is above you decreases until you intercept it, at which point (by definition) you are at the same altitiude. That's when you switch to approach hold, which should start you descending on the glide slope. If you don't switch on the approach hold you'll see the diamond go down below your altitude.
Every time I switch from GPS to NAV the diamond on the right of the altitude indicator is below the line, does this make any difference??? Am I doing something wrong?
I hit Shift 3 for the GPS and it pops up but I can't change anything on it. :( You get that pointy finger to turn/manipulate instruments, but, I don't. What gives? LOL. I'm using steam edition, is that it? HELP!
Standard in game controls. Just cockpit view holding space and using mouse. I have EzDock but couldn't be bothered to learn how to use it properly and it was just being more annoying than useful :)
Dude this is awesome I justed subbed and liked this video I just have one question are you supposed to put the red line for the plane to follow between the ils feather or on one of the two lines of the feather?
+Togili Bogili Hiya man - unfortunately i never found a fix, i think it was my joystick, what model do you have? I now use G27 racing wheel pedals as rudder and a Saitek Pro Flight Yoke for controls.
This is similar to what it is like in the real NG, pretty sure it will work here though: Depress the button below the NAV1 stack, then continue ILS procedure as normal.
Lars, yes. Rudders. You can find it in the controls settings. The rudders are those large turning things in the tail of a plane. It is also used to control the wheel's rotation.
Hey good tutorial man but different airports have different altitudes right? How to come in with the right altitude for the glidescope?(if I'm not using ATC)
The biggest complaint I've heard about ILS approaches in FSX is that the plane sometimes starts "hunting"-swinging wildly left and right if you are not centered on the runway during the approach.
That's because the NAV mode in FSX will follow the manually configured flight path. You likely just programmed the localizer incorrectly. GPS will follow the actual magenta line on your inboard PFD.
if you want to learn to fly ils is to do what they really do by klm learn to fly with baron 58 at eelde/ehgg and for fs2004 you can use fsflightschool software so everything will be rated or fly with beechcraft f33 at goodyear airport / kgyr

Wow! I thought it was much harder! lol Anyway, i don't understand the "Heading" properly.. When should i use the heading, and how can i read the heading? - Thanks for a nice and strait tutorial ;)
I've had that happen a lot; all I can figure is that certain ils approaches don't seem to work right in fsx ( a bug in the program or something). I've just had to test multiple ones and hopefully find one that works for a particular airport. I make sure I set up a good gps flight plan in case you can't use the ils, that way you have a backup in place in case you need to switch back to gps.
+Slartibartfast I believe the "course setting" which should be set to the runway number or direction you are landing in rather is what lets the nav line up with the runway.
Course is the runway heading. You will get that when you make your flight plan, it's in the information that the video-maker printed out near the beginning of the video.
Dude, words cannot express how grateful I am. I have struggled time and time again with ILS Landings but i'm more than happy to say your video finally helped me out. Definitely earned a sub. Thanks!

Sloppy taxiing on the right side of the yellow line. Bad habit because your main gear may leave the tarmac in tight turns and sink in the mud.

Fantastic video, best one I've seen regarding step by step help. Many thanks!
Hey man, i finally did a flight with your instructions and its the best auto pilot flight i've done in 2 years!
At about 8:56 you did a manual heading tweak and mentioned it will follow the purple line. How is the plane following the purple line? What is guiding the plane?
Great Video, cleared up my questions on VOR LOC, and lining up the runway with the route map is a good idea.
Yep, now i can 'touch and Go' in and out of Brisbane practicing this! Cheers mate :)
He actually did land at Schiptol. That runway is just far away from the rest of the airport.

Yeah I always try to avoid that runway. You'll be taxiing for 15 minutes orso to get there, or get to the gate.

Do The Waypoints Used To Align Up With The Runway?

how do u get that HUD/panel view actually ? i only got stock ones that i need to switch view all the time

Not all airports have the IlS system, some just require skill and knowledge from the pilot, good judgement

When I tried it my vertical dimond was on the bottom before I switched to approach. Am I to high?
Yes the approach hold only works if you intercept the glide slope from below.
How do you get into 3d-mode? And how to do you make your plane's nose go up?
The "A" key cycles through the views
Every time I switch from GPS to NAV the diamond on the right of the altitude indicator is below the line, does this make any difference??? Am I doing something wrong?
Joe Tuffill you are too high if the diamond is below the centre line
thanks!!
How did you know what heading to set when you took off? Please tell me!!!!!
+Dream Time Heading should be the same as the runway you are taking off on, although i did not set it in the video
when i turn on nav the diamond is at the bottom and stays there. why does it do this?
The reverse thrust, it isn't listed, am i missing something?
+spacetrooper john huh?
I was looking for a reverse thrust hot key, couldnt find one
Holding f2 when on the ground activates it and pressing f1 will stop it
What I did was bind it to my joystick
Its called throttle decrease i believe. Just set that to repeat.

Ok thanks yes I bought it and don't like it.
the vertical diamond stays up with me so i cant approach hold than is that bc im to high or to low
please react
Did you find an answer cause I’m confused
Dude this is awesome I justed subbed and liked this video I just have one question are you supposed to put the red line for the plane to follow between the ils feather or on one of the two lines of the feather?
Gurjinder Singh Between :)
``im also gonna put my gear down now''
*pulls gear up*
thanks for the guide
i cant get the diamonds, and when i push the approach button and turn it to NAV it crashes me to the ground like before the runway it just crashes
is there a way to fix that?
My joystick leans to left do you know any solution for that? In one of your videos you said you had the same thing on your joystick
+Togili Bogili Hiya man - unfortunately i never found a fix, i think it was my joystick, what model do you have? I now use G27 racing wheel pedals as rudder and a Saitek Pro Flight Yoke for controls.
I found a thing that helped me setting the realism settings to easy then never did that leaning again but thx for your reply!
+DisabledGamer (IWikzGB) I saw a folder called ISIS March in turkish first are u turkish? Second why you you have the isis march
+Togili Bogili Im eglish + i had it as i was using the music
oh ok
is there any way to autoland without that beeping sound . it sounds very annoying .
Just turn your volume off but when I do the iLS mine doesn't beep and it work so I don't
+VantagePoint Dont make your flaps so low and that noise will go!
This is similar to what it is like in the real NG, pretty sure it will work here though:
Depress the button below the NAV1 stack, then continue ILS procedure as normal.
That beeping is morse code
Once you've identified the correct ILS Morse code by listening to it once or twice, you can push the little button at the bottom to stop the beeping.
for the rudder pedals for it to yaw left press insert and for th rudder to yaw right press numeric enter
random but thanks i didnt know
Whenever set my course to what it says it turns the opposite away around and travels back to where it came from
And it flys over the airport, it only follows the purple line until the point where you can hear the beeping sound
Jacob Goddard yeah this happens to me too did you find the problem?
+Mazen Izzeddine Its very hard to tell what you are doing wrong as there is so many factors, if you sent me a video i could help you out.
Alright, when I set Approach Hold, instead of following the path, the plane's yoke becomes active. Why is this?
It’s because you didn’t wait for the diamond
Thank you so much I will find this very helpful for Fsx
How do you steer to the left and right?? I don't mean "like a plane" but like a car.
as he does at 4:35
Lars, use your rudders.
rudders?
Lars, yes. Rudders. You can find it in the controls settings. The rudders are those large turning things in the tail of a plane. It is also used to control the wheel's rotation.
Would you create a video showing ILS in the B1-B?
jshabadoo lmao just for you? No1 here used a b1 bomber in fsx
ive lerned so much from this video i realy thank you from the bottom of my hart you are great!
My diamond goes away from the line after awhile... Any solution on how to fix that? Also, how did u make your camera so smooth inside the cockpit?
Space then move mouse
You need to turn altitude hold off, I think.
if u press approach hold it should do that by itself
DisabledGamer (IWikzGB) On the course is it the ils heading?
thx!
how did you get the vor loc because for me it woudent work
You need switch nav/gps to gps first. Also you need an ifr plan
i already figured it out but thx
guys, no matter what flight i do my pink diamond during descend will never come down to the white line, does anyone have an idea on how to fi this

Hey good tutorial man but different airports have different altitudes right? How to come in with the right altitude for the glidescope?(if I'm not using ATC)
Usually ATC gives you approach alt. but if you aren't using ATC then 2500 AGL seems to work well.
The biggest complaint I've heard about ILS approaches in FSX is that the plane sometimes starts "hunting"-swinging wildly left and right if you are not centered on the runway during the approach.
Does anyone know why my airplane turns full to the right when i turn gps to nav?
That's because the NAV mode in FSX will follow the manually configured flight path. You likely just programmed the localizer incorrectly. GPS will follow the actual magenta line on your inboard PFD.

Has anything changed as it has been another couple of months?
+TheDwindleBros This will never change for this aircraft
these vids are so helpful thanks
Do you have EzDock?
I cant seem to get the vertical diamond to be centered anyone know why?
Did you find an answer
But how did you drag that line?
How do u know how far U are from the airport (100 feet etc.)?
+Max Kobak Some addon aircrafts say it default, there are also some addons to say it however i do not know the names of them.
Ok but where would it be on the aircraft? thanks
+max luis123 these are called "landing callouts", for instance at 500ft, the pilot would get a 500ft callout, same as 200ft, 100ft, 50ft, 40, 30, 20, 10. This is where a voice is heard inside the cockpit, like the sound of Siri. I thought that fsx already had it but it must be a add on
+GIZZIT12 okey sound good. Thanks for the help
+max luis123 default fsx dont have call outs, but the 175 195 embrer jet on steam does
No amred brake?
How can "red and yellow" lights be "all white"?
I am doing everything as in your tutorial and in 100% cases (I tried almost 20 times) I always stall right before landing, without touching anything... It all goes according to the plan and all of the sudden I stall and can do nothing... :/
try a faster approach speed, like between 170 and 180
How do I set my corse?
it work first for me but now when i'm coming in for the landing the plane speeds up and misses the runway
Have you taken the auto throttle off? Are you manually controlling the speed

me neither :/
Make sure to switch to NAV when on final and check that you have the correct ILS frequency tuned to NAV 1 and the correct course
Thx for the helpful vid !
Wow! I thought it was much harder! lol
Anyway, i don't understand the "Heading" properly.. When should i use the heading, and how can i read the heading?
- Thanks for a nice and strait tutorial ;)
Thanks, I will practice tomorrow
when I hit the nav switch, my plane goes crazy in the wrong direction
its going to line up with the runway so it will go into a random direction at first so it can do so
I've had that happen a lot; all I can figure is that certain ils approaches don't seem to work right in fsx ( a bug in the program or something). I've just had to test multiple ones and hopefully find one that works for a particular airport. I make sure I set up a good gps flight plan in case you can't use the ils, that way you have a backup in place in case you need to switch back to gps.
THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH DUDE !!
I can't free look in cockpit or outside help pls.
you hold space to free look around or the button on the joystick handle
You explained what the various auto pilot settings were/for but not what the course setting was/for....slightly important don't you think?!!
+Slartibartfast I believe the "course setting" which should be set to the runway number or direction you are landing in rather is what lets the nav line up with the runway.
How do you get course
Course is the runway heading. You will get that when you make your flight plan, it's in the information that the video-maker printed out near the beginning of the video.
Why does the video category say Music????
lol
