You are correct in that this song followed Rainy Days & Mondays. That was released early Spring 1971 & was recorded 2 weeks before Karen's 21 birthday; still age 20. Superstar was released August 1971. I remember hearing her on the car radio when we drove to the beach on weekends. I was a young child, but her voice always swept me out of this world!

This song, Superstar, was written by Leon Russell and has been recorded by several artists. Richard's arrangement with the horns, playing to Karen's strengths makes it THE classic version.

Welcome my young friend, to the Carpenters rabbit hole. One of the finest vocalists in all of music history, she actually preferred being behind the drums until Richard had the good sense to get her to be the "frontman". Everytime I heat this woman, I smile and cry at the sametime. She would not see, in the mirror, what we all saw, a stunningly beautiful woman inside and out with God given talent. Why oh why God, could she not see what we all saw????? May her voice and spirit reign on forever in the music universe.

Yes, Richard and Karen did all the backing vocals as well. The one song I know of where they didn't was the song "Now" as it wasn't long after Karen had done the lead vocals that she died, so the backing vocals were done by other vocalists before it was released.
If you want some happy upbeat Carpenters songs I would suggest My Body Keeps Changing My Mind and watching the official music video to Please Mr Postman which was filmed at Disneyland as Karen was a huge fan of Disney.

"superstar" was originally recorded in 1971 for their 3rd studio album [Carpenters] Karen Carpenter - vocals, drums, Richard Carpenter - arranger, piano, harpsichord, Wurlitzer electric piano, Hammond organ, vocals, orchestration, Hal Blaine - drums, Jim Horn - reeds. Earl Dumler - oboe on "For All We Know", Bob Messenger - bass, reeds, Tommy Morgan - harmonica.
This version was recorded in 2018 at Abby Road Studios with the original master with original musicians and vocals but with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra added. Again Richard did the producing, arranging and directed the Philharmonic. He recorded 18 of Carpenters hits that way and released "Carpenters with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra" in Dec. of 2018. It contained "Yesterday Once More" "Hurting Each Other" "Touch Me When We're Dancing" For All We Know" "I Need to Be in Love" "I Believe You "I Just Fall in Love Again" "Merry Christmas, Darling" "Baby It's You" "(They Long to Be) Close to You" "Superstar" "Rainy Days and Mondays" "This Masquerade" "Ticket to Ride" "Goodbye to Love" "Top of the World" "We've Only Just Begun".
I first saw them in 1965 as the Dick Carpenter Jazz Trio. It was Richard on piano Karen (she was 15 and did not sing yet) on drums and originally Wesley Jacobs standup bass and tuba latter Bill Sissoyev took over on bass. They won the Hollywood Bowl Battle of the Bands in 1966 and co won the TV shoe Your All American Show in 1968. It had a winner every week and then after 7 or 8 weeks an overall winner. You can hear their song "Iced Tea" from the contest if you search for 1966 battle of the bands. There are a lot of very good to great drummers, but only one with her voice.

I saw the Carpenters in 1972 and was blown away. Karen was a legendary Drummer/Singer. I think she was in the same class as Don Henley (The Eagles), Levon Helm (The Band) and Phi Collins. She sang and drummed effortlessly. To see her sing and drum, check out her doing that on a cover of the Beatles' song Help (she opened the show I saw singing and drumming through this song) or singing and drumming through Mr.Guder or Dancing in the Streets. (These are all on UA-cam)She broke the Glass Ceiling. She was famous for recording songs in one take. Superstar was recorded in one take, with her reading the lyrics off an envelope written by her brother. What are her best songs ? In my opinion ? 1)Trying to Get the Feeling Again -recorded i 1975--and the lost. Found by Richard --he released it in 1994 -11 years after Karen died.2)Solitaire,3) A Place to Hideaway, 4)Don't Cry for Me Argentina,5)Yesterday Once More,6)Rainy Days and Mondays,7)Mr Guder,8)Duet with Ella Fitzgerald,9)Duet with John Denver,10)Duet with Perry Como--all of these are on UA-cam.

Her live vocals in that concert really surpasses the studio recordings. If you do check it out I would probably suggest starting with Adagio which she sings in English, Je Suis Malade sung in French and Caruso which is sung in Italian. I like that you said "she initially played the drums in Carpenters", because it's quite rare that people use the group name correctly - most people call them "The Carpenters" which I suppose is easier to go with than just "Carpenters" 😂
I've never been able to get into Tori singing Carpenters songs, I don't get the emotion in her voice like Karen, just kinda feels like she looks into the camera to say "Look how much I sound like Karen" rather than singing from the heart, but maybe that's just me being fussy 😂 I think the nearest I've heard to Karen vocally is a singer called Harriet, well worth checking out. I'd also maybe recommend a song called 'Slow' by Rumer, that definitely has shades of Carpenters to it.

I had to re-record some footage during these reactions because I called them "The Carpenters" on several occasions, which isn't their name. @@DanCanReact Hey y'all, wait a second. Just because "the" is not part of their name it doesn't mean you can't use it correctly. Just like you say "the Smiths" or "the Johnsons" or "the Joneses". While some bands did have "the" as part of their name (The Beatles, The Band, The Who, The Beach Boys) it doesn't mean SAYING it is wrong. It just means it is not in their logo or album covers or an official part of their commercial stage name. Same with "the Go-Go's" or "the B-52's". In fact whenever an act is referred to in plural (ending in "s" usually), it is grammatically correct to SAY it that way. Just don't use it as an official part of the name in writing, and don't capitalize it as "The Carpenters". Saying it though? Totally fine.

There is an emotional resonance and universality that reaches deep into our souls. That is the reason that Karen is loved and respected by many generations all over the world. She is an acknowledged legend. Karen possessed an instinctive technical brilliance which was not studied and appropriated from someone else. It came from within. To further my point, you can make a high tech digital copy of the Mona Lisa and put it alongside the original. At a glance, they look similar. But they are not the same. One is the priceless original. The other is a skillful copy.

    Now I’ll watch…
Hi Dan, I think you already saw my drumming song video recommendation. So, I like that you got a Tori sneak peak. I usually hold back on Tori until a reactor’s Carpenters journey is well established. It helps with appreciating her capabilities. I was the first and for a long time, starting last October, the only Tori requester. I was 57 reactions in when I saw one that wasn’t mine. There are a few but my friend Ron #58 is second only to me. We have well over 200 reactions in hand now. Thankfully there are a few more requesters. She has a lot of great people surrounding her and met Richard in April at the 55th Anniversary where she was an invited singer, one of 8 acts. That all said I’m going to recommend a non-Carpenters cover, just the same. She and Dan Wesley recently released their cover of the song; Suddenly. It was originally from the 1980 movie Xanadu. Originally sung by the movie’s star Olivia Newton-John and Cliff Richard. I hope you know Olivia? I don’t want to spoil that journey? Linked below.
You’re going to have a lot of fun on these journeys, Carpenters has a lot and Tori has well, only just begun. 😃

@@DanCanReact Not only did she not find love, but back then their peers (namely other Boomers who were more into harder rock) made fun of people who listened to them. They were considered square and "your parents' music" (Richard Nixon loved them at the time, and you know what the youth culture thought about him, LOL). I even remember as a kid it not being cool to mention you liked the Carpenters (or even ABBA) for that reason. So she had success and fame, but she would've been BLOWN AWAY (as I am too a bit) to see young people 50 years later not only listening to them, but loving them instantly. It's so ironic she didn't get to see that respect and true admiration and acceptance. And what's worse her mother favored Richard and put her down a lot in a rather competitive way. I think she resented her or was jealous but she fawned over Richard, the family prodigy who wrote all the music and arranged it and was multi-talented and first to be established before "little sis" joined him. Karen could never truly please her mom, who wasn't demonstrably loving and affectionate to begin with. It's a sad story all around, but try to remember when you listen to their music (and see her get skinnier and skinner). Somehow it makes it sadder but also feels good to pay them rightful tribute.
