I agree. There's such a strong pattern of picking the wrong men, of loss, perhaps of neglect and abuse. She claims she is singing the story of her life, and not for nobody but herself. I hope it works. A commenter on another song said she was worried about Lana and hoped that she, Lana, would be protected. She's a recovering alcoholic--as she's stated many times--and I know that puts her at risk. Music is a crazy business. She's worked so hard for so long and now she is famous, very successful, and BELOVED. Man--how do you manage all that and keep your head on straight? My prayers are with her.
I love how this song sounds happy at first, but afterall, the meaning is really sad. And it reminds me so much of my ,,sweet sixteen". Lana should one day write a biography, so we would know all the secrets of her life.
+Zuzana Ludačková print out the lyrics of all her songs. Staple them together. Put a cover on it with a pretty picture of her there. You have her autobiography.
This song really means a lot to me. When my best friend and I were in high school we were crazy and literally did everything this song talks about (besides like stealing police cars lol) and this song describes our lives back then perfectly. The day I found this song it immediately reminded me of us so I sent it to her. It was like our song from then on. Then one day when we were 16 my best friend's parents sent her off to a rehab boarding school after repetitively getting in trouble and I didn't see her or even hear from her for 2 years. The day I found out she was gone, while balling my eyes out, I re-listened to this song and this part hit me: "We got into trouble and when stuff got bad I got sent away, I was waving on the train platform crying cause I know I'm never coming back." Like damn, even that part came true. When I missed her I would listen to this song.. Now she's been back for a while and we're both clean. We've been best friends for 7 years now and she just transferred to my college and this is still my favorite song :)
I used to have friend , and were like BEST FRIENDS , and now she's not talking with me , and i'm really depressed because i love her so much(as friend of course) , and she says that she's talking with me , but she's not , not the way we used to....
I like this version a lot more, the lyrics sound like they were made for an upbeat jam that simultaneously makes you depressed. In the original it’s just sad vibes all around
I think what’s special about Lana is that she sings about what relates to us, as women, in a way that we all sort of just understand absolutely. Even if you don’t relate to what she is specifically singing about, somehow, it still resonates with you and you feel it in a way like you can’t even explain. When I listen to Lana, it’s like this little secret club where we all know each other’s feelings and everything suddenly makes sense. I can’t quit describe it, but it’s amazing. Maybe I make no sense, but that’s how Lana makes me feel.
I love this version way more than the studio version! It's the little extra lyrics and happier beat that makes this version more beautiful. However the studio version fits the lyrics more and is the one to listen to when you're feel a bit more down.
Roxanna Reyes᪥ she naturally had a nose like that , the only thing I think she got corrected was that her nose had a little bend in the middle , I think she got it removed
it's sad cause I love all her songs but i can't relate to any of them.... i'd just much rather stay home and play video games or something and she's all 'running in our black bikini tops from the cops'
That's the thing about Lana to me. You don't have to relate to her completely. Have ever done drugs? No. Have I ever drank alcohol? No. (Besides when I was like 7 joking around with my parents) But, somehow, I feel this connection to the crazy, dangerous things she's done. Maybe it's that she connects with the dark side everyone has inside. That's how I see Lana's songs.
Aww just realized this was uploaded 9 years ago today (September 30th). I just turned 20, I’ve been a fan since I was 17. I come back to this video all the time. I absolutely love this version! 💗💋🎀
one of her many talents is thinking up as many details as possible, niche details, details that others wouldnt have thunk to include, to mention, and weaving those beautiful little intricacies into RHYMING prose that tells a CAPTIVATING story, and transports you to the imagined life… she remembers the cops, she remembers the party favors, she remembers the sweet sixteens… shes very detail oriented and good with words… you can tell when shes writing the lyrics shes lived the experiences, values them enough to mention all their little details, and lives them vividly again in her head as she writes…

People that say they like this version better then the original, don't forget that Lana was aiming for sad songs. While I like this version too, the original (sad version) is the best for me.
lana wasn't 'going for' sad songs.. it just happens that most of them are, the album is based on how fame isn't all its cracked up to be, the tempos and sounds to her songs are all changing, the song is just as 'sad regardless of the beat or backtrack, its about the lyrics.
+Tyler Dunn Actually, the songs are about her life and most of the men she dated and people she knew. [Shades Of Blue, Black Beauty, Terrence Loves You.] Also, this version of the song isn't even on the Born To Die Album, maybe you should listen to the original before saying this song is on the album.
shsl britney obi its not on the album.. its just the demo (the version created before being edited for the album).. read the argument before you go and bud in
This makes me think of a friend I had in high school. She was the complete opposite of me, she was trouble. Drugs and all kinds of mischief but I adored her and we were close. Listening to this song, I see us sitting on the sidewalk sharing headphones and listening to whatever metal band she wanted me to hear, sharing glitter makeup and her putting lilac blush on me, her giving me her jacket when I was cold, threatening to beat up stupid boys who messed with me, cute nicknames she had for me, the kitten she found and brought to school, how she'd kiss my cheek whenever I hear this song. We went our separate ways when I heard from another person that she paid a crush I had to pretend to like me, and I don't know if it's true or not. I would hope it was just a cruel comment and that she wouldn't do something like that, because she seemed so protective of me and threatened to beat up a guy who SA'd me... well, that one SA'd me too. I saw her in the hallway again at community college the short time I was there, and I almost forgot it happened. I wanted to hug her, but instead I got emotional and walked away without saying hi. Sometimes I wish I did. I miss her and I'd like to talk to her again, but I don't think I can reach out because of what I remember that hurt me. I think I miss the moments I had with her and feeling like I had a connection, but it's sad that what happened had to color it. I hope she's doing okay and sending her love in spite of it all. This is for you, D. I miss you. ❤
So I used to despise Lana because I hated Born To Die and I thought her voice was weird. Tonight I just decided to look at more of her songs. After listening to Summertime Sadness, I love her. Her lyrics are beautiful and she puts effort into her music videos. Her voice is unique and she's an amazing woman to say the least. I regret my poor judgment prior to listening to some of her other songs.

I have searched far and wide for a catchty remix.... all i can say is AMAZING! i have never heard a remix where the ARTIST puts effort into it! Like Skrillex or DJs did all the work! Nothing compares! Love her voice
the hip hop beat on this song works well with her vocals. Much better than the original. I guess its true that unreleased originals are better than the edited version actually released for the album
Shit, I can't go back to the album version after listening to this gem.
IK ITS SO MUCH SLOWER
Aha
Same, but I prefer the earlier released demo
at first i was like no way, the album version is better....
but this grew on me over time! now i cant go back
the fact that Gordon Freeman takes his time to listen to this song is amazing ahahaha

High heels in her hands, swayin' in the wind
While she starts to cry, mascara runnin' down her little Bambi eyes

Baby's table dancin' at the local dive
Cheerin our names in the pink spotlight
Drinkin' cherry schnapps in the velvet night
Know we used to go break in
To the hotel pool, glittering we'd swim
Runnin' from the cops in our black bikini tops
Screaming, get us while we're hot
We don't give a what

Her lyrics are beautiful and she puts effort into her music videos. Her voice is unique and she's an amazing woman to say the least. I regret my poor judgment prior to listening to some of her other songs.
I love that tinkling melody in the beginning and ending. It's hypnotical.
Verse 1]
Remember how we used to party up all night?
Sneaking out and looking for a taste of real life
Drinking in the small town firelight
(Pabst Blue Ribbon on ice)
Sweet sixteen, and we had arrived
Walking down the streets as they whistle, "Hi, hi!"
Stealin' police cars with the senior guys
Teachers said we'd never make it out alive
[Pre-Chorus 1]
There she was, my new best friend
High heels in her hand, swayin' in the wind
While she starts to cry
Mascara running down her little Bambi eyes
"Lana, how I hate those guys"
[Chorus]
This is what makes us girls
We all look for heaven and we put love first
Something that we'd die for, it's our curse
Don't cry about it, don't cry about it
This is what makes us girls
We don’t stick together 'cause we put love first
Don't cry about him, don't cry about him
It's all gonna happen
[Verse 2]
And that's where the beginning of the end begun
Everybody knew that we had too much fun
We were skipping school and drinking on the job
With the boss
Sweet sixteen, and we had arrived
Baby's table dancing at the local dive
Cheering our names in the pink spotlight
Drinking cherry schnapps in the velvet night
[Pre-Chorus 2]
Yo, we used to go break into the hotel
Glimmering, we’d swim
Running from the cops in our black bikini tops
Screaming, "Get us while we're hot, get us while we're hot"
(C'mon, take a shot)
[Bridge]
The prettiest in-crowd that you had ever seen
Ribbons in our hair, and our eyes gleamed dream
A freshmen generation of degenerate beauty queens
And you know something?
They were the only friends I ever had
When I got into trouble, and when stuff got bad
I got sent away, I was waving on the train platform
Crying 'cause I know I'm never coming back
[Chorus]
This is what makes us girls
We all look for heaven and we put love first
Something' that we'd die for, it's our curse
Don't cry about it, don't cry about it
This is what makes us girls
We don’t stick together 'cause we put love first
Don't cry about him, don't cry about him
It's all gonna happen, oh

the hip hop beat on this song works well with her vocals. Much better than the original. I guess its true that unreleased originals are better than the edited version actually released for the album
