Alright alright, let's get down to building Wheatley IRL ok? Personality Cores, Spheres, etc, are essential robotic stewards of Aperture Labs and are required to modify GLaDOS's unruly behavior. I've already built a prototype of her head, so cores are the logical next step! They're plausible mechanically, but I will have to make some compromises so that things aren't floating and clipping through each other. This is the first video documenting my build of everybody's favorite intelligence dampening core.
I explain a bit more of my thought process on this blog post:

What is your favorite Wheatley quote? I want to make sure I animate your top suggestions when the main video gets released.
"It's not out of the question that you might have a very minor case of..... serious brain damage." Best line.
“Holmes vs Moriarty, Aristotle vs MASHY SPIKE PLATE!”
Also, his whole, “making you dance like a puppet playing cards” speech is AMAZING!!!
"I'm going to attempt a manual override on this wall, could get a bit technical"
The betrayal dialogue with GLaDOS leading to the reveal of Whitley's origins as IDS
Purely for the "I AM NOT A MORON" line
It could be a fun idea to make the GLaDOS head and Whitley talk to each other (using their in-game banter)
"I've got an idea, but it's _bloody_ dangerous!"

“Bumblebee stop lubricating the man”
Lol, it'll be a while before somethin like Optimus can roll out. Have you seen that new toy that actually automatically transforms? It's bloody awesome
@@MrVolt I wanna see that now

I honestly prefer this smaller scale version, it feels like how big we see him in the game. So excited! :D
I think it's s a good mix of the cutscene sized Wheatley (Much smaller than the model size) and the fact that the models have to be pretty big (compared to Chell) to look right in the player's view
this guys gonna end up building the entire Laboratory at this point lol
But smaller scale because original size is too big.
I want him to rebuild the Half Life Citadel in 30 years.
@@verlorenercarl-account717 nah m8 lets go buy a salt mine
Panels are basically just industrial robot arms with flat bits on the end.
well if the turrets work
Having played the Aperture demos in VR, I can attest to GLaDOS being scarily big in person.
her head is like the front of a car rotated 90 degrees
Fun fact, I got a lot of time to spare because I'm in a hospital and started to make plans for a Wheatley animatronic today. The fact that you uploaded this video today is almost frightening :D
I hope you recover soon! Great minds eh? :)
@@MrVolt Thank you very much, I will still need the rest of the year for that. I'm part of the TechDudes channel, stay tuned for a Portal camera vid maybe at the end of the year if I get my lazy ass going :P

YESSSSSSSS WHEATLEY IS COMING! GLADOS WAS AMAZING AND I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE THE MECHANICS AND PURE AMAZING MECHANIC GENIUS! sorry excitement over, I seriously can’t wait I loved the GLADOS build and everything on your channel!
me to!
Glados not going happy
Damn I forgot I posted this lmao
IT'S BEGUN!! MY BOI!! MY SON!! Honestly, I think in reality, it's probably far more accurate to have Core's be around basketball size. It just feels right.
Also, that LED looks SICK! That otta make doing expressions a lot easier as it will allow you to let his eye contract like it does when he's really angry or scared. I don't know if you'll be able to animate the LED but the thought of seeing his brilliant blue pupil dart about is really cool!
Wheatley is one of my favorite characters of all time (finding out about him and his story in Portal 2 was what led me to get into the Portal franchise and play Portal 2) and I'm really excited that you'll be tackling him! Core's are complex (like a horse there's a lot of moving parts) and I can't wait to see what you'll do!
Honestly their complexity is what makes them one of my favorite robots in media. Despite basically just being a giant eyeball, they're very expressive and I cannot wait to see how you'll bring that to life!
Thank you! Yup, I've already made the graphics for him to have a digital iris mechanism over the light. Haha, definitely. Having now spent many dozens of hours going over his design, I really appreciate how animated cores are. I struggle to thing of a robot character that has so many points of articulation in their "face" that doesn't use a screen for the expression.
I wish you the best of luck on this project! As a Wheatley fan, I’m super hyped!!
I can tell from your PFP
@@marivicespinosa5860 my PFP used to be Wheatley but on the hackerman meme
this guy is literally gonna become cave johnson
I wanted to write yes, if GLADOS was possible, so Wheatly, bur u did that for me in the start of the vid.
I think it's clear to see that this is our amazing Cave Johnson
The “I want a full scale budget” killed me. Keep up the good work
"Here at Aperture Science, we're not banging rocks together. We know how to build a Personality Core. And if I'm being honest, it's expensive as hell!"
You're the only guy I have the bell on for. This Wheatley build is going to be awesome
thank u for reminding me of this, yes this is the one person worthy of the bell
Let's go! Congrats on starting your Wheatley! I'm super excited to see how he turns out. I think your scaling might be off a bit because of the game's perspective, but I'm excited to see you make a slightly-bigger-than-IRL version! That should give you more room to tackle his Stewart Platform mechanics on the inside. Looking forward to the next video!
Thanks mate! You don't even know how many times I've visited your site in the past month :P It's been majorly helpful.
@@MrVolt Glad to be of service! Please don't hesitate to email me if you want to talk more directly:. animatronicwheatley@gmail.com . Two heads are better than one!
@@24-7-testing Plus you're both very smart, and know how to build one of these, so you both collaborating to make it would probably make a better, and faster result.
Extremely underrated. I hope your channel grows!
Thank you so much!
3x more challenging this time. we have faith in you man, cant wait to see the final product! very exciting!
Thanks Jack!
You've no idea how excited i am for this build!!!!!!!!!!!
I've always wanted to build a scale, accurate model, after seeing that big animatronic one made by the super talented Furin (channel name trpchakai). Yup, i know almost 10 years ago. Closest i've gotten so far, is a few tennis ball sized units that served for me to figure out the major geometry and the meshing of the mechanisms.
So this one's going to be inspiration juice for me. :))
Yeah! I'll be writing a full tutorial for a mini Core that will be very affordable and much easier for anyone to build in July :)
Furin's Wheatley is a puppet, though still very impressive
I'm starting to think I should actually make more videos. After all, you're making my dreams a reality.
OH MY GOD, ITS HAPPENING! I'm so glad I subscribed to this channel, Portal 2 series is coming!
"Testing is the future, and the future starts with you."
Seeing this in my recommended made my morning
I've actually been gathering the parts to try and construct one, so this is literally so amazing. Thank you for sharing your amazing work with us, and thank you for doing portal stuff even after its been ten years!!! *I just found your channel through reccomend, and I'm SO HAPPY I DID!
This man deserves more recognition.
I'm really excited to see your design process! That circular lcd is awesome. Using a rectangular lcd really limited the facial movement of my Space Core. There's not much room for parts to move around in these things
Ooh this is gonna be awesome, I love watching folks tackle building the bots IRL 🥺
Also, I've been in the portal fandom for a looong time, and there have been *many* conversations and debates about the core's true sizes - comparing the in-game models to Chell's model is actually a bit tricky because a lot of the models in the game had to be scaled so they would look correct from a first-person view. This means a lot of models are actually bigger than their true size. I can't remember exactly, but I think folks pretty consistently come to the agreement that cores are a little bigger than a basketball. So by building him a bit bigger than half scale, you may actually be closer to his accurate size than you would be if you went 1:1 with the game model!
True! There's definitely inconsistencies depending on when you interact with him. I think he'll feel right at this size IRL too.
Idk how true this is but according to the wiki, Wheatley is around 2 feet in height. (1’11) comes up to around Chell’s knee (a little higher)
He’s very cool and short
Ok, That start to the video is insane. This video deserves a like.
That round LCD is pretty cool! Though I'd assume you could use a square/rectangular display, if it fits, to reduce costs.
Make it so gLaDOS can control panels can make mini rooms and tests
This was a great start!
In fact, we can. It's been done before, as a puppet, and it's adorable!
I love the puppet version!
I've been waiting for this.
Oooooooo Yeah! I am so excited for this.... I bought filament for my friends Z18 Makerbot that can print some large parts for my Portal Turret, so finally i can continue with it :)
Finally :P
Ayyyyy, good luck my man!
Bruh I was bit expecting that intro that was top quality comedy you've gained a new subscriber
Why did it put bit i ment not wtf
I legit can’t wait until the next part!!!
That's big enough for me. 🤷🏾♂️ Cant wait to see where this goes.
Keep it up bro! Youve inspired me to finish my gravity gun that's been sitting around for a few months! I may make a video of it!
I'm so looking forward to this!!!
You seriously do not have enough subs for the amount of effort you put into these.
This Made My Day! Holy Crap I'm excited!
I want a small, baseball sized Wheatley that I can throw mock nine at across the room
Mach 9*
Also why would you do that to wheatley
I love these videos, would total follow the step by step guide
"Let there be light, that's uh... god. I was quoting god."

Finally after so many years another guide but just 10x better
Nice, this could be super handy as I am working on my own one. But I still struggle to get all the mechanics fitted in the core himself. This little fellow has an amazing range of movement. Cant wait to see what you came up with!
Awesome! I'll also be releasing an affordable and easier to build mini version in July, so hopefully that model will be helpful for you
@@MrVolt That sounds awesome... Thanks for sharing your work and progress. :)
OH GOD I'm so excited for this!!!!
Honestly, i want someone on the future to make a 100% accurate Wheatley, and by 100% accurate, i mean by AI that acts, talks, and reacts just like Wheatley would, but MAN thatd take a LONG time for something like that to work
I am also working on a Wheatley! Good luck with yours man!
Thanks, you too!
Good luck! Super hyped
"The Wheatley model was designed as a mechanical version of the original Portal 1 personality sphere...we came up with the onion skin design where a number of spherical plates could slide around inside each other all supported on a small motion platform mounted on a gyroscope...We were careful to make the mechanics look plausible, but we had to cheat the eyelids, since they ended up being a physical impossibility. There was no way all that geometry could fit into the space around his eye without clipping out the other side, but they were such an essential feature of the model that we resorted to crushing them up inside the eye where the player can't see them."
It'll be interesting to see how you work around this
This is awesome!!!!!! I'm so hyped :D
OH I AM SO READY FOR THIS!!! NEED ME A WHEATLEY CORE 💙💙💙💙💙
I would LOVE to make one of these at some point!
Im excited for this
Im so exited for this
Mate with content this quality i don't care if i have to wait a while.
Oh man, love love love it.
I noticed that there is faceting on that (test) print, be sure to export those files at a higher tessellation density. It is a pet hate of mine when people think the smoothed normals preview is what REALLY get printed, and they end up with like a decagon for a sphere haha.
I of course would love to see a full scale but JEZUZ that is soo big, I even feel like my full scale turret is too big but I stuck with it. I am sure you would one day print a full scale one, even if it is static!
Also, I wish you lived in Sydney, The Gaben may come past from New Zealand and said when he does, he'd like me to come past and say hello!! :O on his Yacht.... Would be amazing for both of us to go and take our prints with us haha.
If you're looking for voice lines, i recommend looking into the TF2 AP-SAP, Its a Wheatley themed sapper and they recorded special lines for it, alot of hello's and goodbyes you can use!

One day there will be a person who will do a 1:1 scale "fully" functioning replica of all the robots of Aperture, consisting of the correct materials and electrical components.
And then mysteriously die from neurotoxin poisoning.
@@damienmaymdien6367 “mysteriously”
If you want to make full scale cores you could put them on rails with movement options that can well access functions of your house and I think that would be cool and hey it's a cannon feature. Or you could do the smaller ones
I've started planning a management rail, but I need to finish Wheatley first of course :)
this channel is awesome
Circular monitors! So many possibilities! New 3d printer looks awesome.
I just started replaying portal two last week
Wow i allready like your channel i have watched 16 seconds of your vid and this is the first vid i have seen of you from what i know and just the fast yes in the beginning made me go yes and I’m gonna subscribe now bc I have always wanted to see a vid when you search for something on yt and you want to get a quick answer without having to watch like 10 minutes of things you don’t need to hear and well I mean this wasn’t really a question but still
5 videos later
“So today i made the entirety of aperture labs
this is just,,,,, so cool
HELL YEAH!!! SO EXCITED!!!
SPACE! SPACE! IM IN SPACE! SPACCEEEE, WEEEEEEE!
Ahhh SPACE COPS.
But don't you forget making their pupils move!
this is exciting
Next is a fully working portal gun
I had no idea Wheatley was so big. That makes Chell’s ability to carry him in her arms kinda impressive. Though cores are mostly hollow, so maybe he’s not as heavy as he looks
This dude here is literally Cave Johnson irl no kidding
you deserve more subs
ok now this is gonna be a full build...
HOLY CRaP I LOvE THIS
Soo can we build something irl? -youtubers
Yes -good youtubers
I think you missed something in wheatleys height.
P-Body's head is like a Lava lamp.
Not spherical but stretched like a Dino Egg or whatever is having this Shape.
Wheatley however is round and is basically just the Eye of the Core.
By having Wheatley put down on a cube next to P-Body you can see that Wheatley isn't that big of a Core.
You however put him the same size as P-Body's Head which might be wrong.
(I did NOT started my Computer and designed a Coop Community Test Chamber to look how big Wheatley looks when lying next to P-Βody using the Developer Consele even if is 1am in germany and I better should go to sleep...I DID NOT DO THAT TO WRITE THIS COMMENT BECAUSE I HAVE NOT ENOUGH TIME TO WASTE)

This guy has only 30ksubs!?!?he needs at least a million
Thanks Mr volt for the like 👍
"well I want a full-scale budget" I HAD TO PAUSE TO LAUGH 🤣🤣🤣 That was the best clapback in the history of the internet lol
Thank you
I. AM. SO. HYPE.
I would love an animatronic baseball sized Wheatley.
And once you're done building it, all you have to do to make it look authentic is to crush it, crack the lens and get a bird to re-activate it somehow
