    A lot of people think Sheila goes from being genuinely stupid to clever, but I think at the beginning she agrees to fill the sterotype but is not actually as immature as she seems. When she hints at how she knows Gerald wasn't seeing her in the holidays not because he was busy but because he was seeing someone else, we can tell she is clever all the way through the play

      She isn't stupid no,but she is immature and materalisic.Her focus goes straight fully to the nice ring despite when Gerald gave it to her despite the serious and tense conversation her and Gerald had just had.

      @@C6Wolves I agree. She was also extremely childish by referring to Mrs Birling as 'mummy' which conveys her a lack of maturity. It is also stereotypically posh to refer to her mother as 'mummy' which conveys she highly values an upper-class person.

    In Act 1, Sheila addresses her parents as "Mummy" and "Daddy", showing immaturity and childlike- behaviour. The first impression of Sheila that we receive is that she is naive and materialistic, we get this as she is clingy to her ring "I will let it out of my sight". This is well contrasted to Act 2, where she addresses her parents as "Mother" and "Father" and even directly talks to her mother, despite the patronising from Mrs Birling, Sheila's character has become more mature in Act 2, upon learning about the death of Eva Smith.
    The character of Sheila feels the most guilt out of all the characters for the death of Eva Smith because she is most alike her; "a pretty girl, in her early twenties." Her character first begins to change when she finds out about the working conditions of the women in the work houses from her father, "These girls aren't cheap labour- they're people!" she argues back to her father which she wouldn't have done before in Act 1 in her childish attitude.
    (What Grade would you rate this so far-)

    • @mrbruff
      @mrbruff  5 років тому +12

      I think one of the key things in the early days is realising that the persona you project in class is what students will believe is you. So project confidence even if you don't feel it. ACT confident and eventually you won't be acting anymore.

    An Inspector Calls is set in 1912.
    The First World War is yet to start. Birling's view that "the Germans don't want war," is known to be incorrect by all audience members as the play wasn't performed until 1946.
    The Titanic was in production but hadn't begun its ill-fated maiden voyage.
    There was a patriarchal society - men - were seen as more powerful than women. Women were seen as cheap labour, their main concern was to get married, be a housewife and look after the children.
    The ruling classes saw no need to change their position. There was a strong divide between the upper and lower classes. An Inspector Calls was written in 1945.
    World War II ended on 8 May 1945. People (including the first II audiences of the play) were recovering from nearly 6 years of warfare, danger and uncertainty.
    It was known that the Titanic sank in 1912.
    As a result of the wars and the Suffragette movement, women were more valued in society.
    There was a great desire for social change and, primarily as a result of the wars, there were less divisions between classes.

    im a bit late, but i just wanted to mention that when sheila first finds out that she helped kill eva, she runs out of the room crying, whereas when gerald tells her to leave later on in the play she chooses to stay and hear his story even though she knows it will cause her distress. this is one of the ways she can be seen growing as a person. good luck on paper 2 fellas 🤞🤞

    I've noticed that in ur videos there is analysis but not a lot of a02. Is the school I'm using enforcing ao2 too much and you present all that is needed or are you possibly not adding enough? Thanks for the videos they help :)

    • @mrbruff
      @mrbruff  4 роки тому +8

      Thank you for your question. I would say that A02 is the majority of what I cover in my videos. Let’s take this Sheila analysis video as an example. AO2 is ‘Analyse the language, form and structure used by a writer to create meanings and effects, using relevant subject terminology where appropriate.’ In this video here are some of the ways I do just that:
      1. The point about Sheila’s changing terms of address, from the infantile mummy / daddy to the more mature mother / father, is language analysis when considering the connotations of the terms of address, and structure analysis when considering how these terms change over time (and what that suggests about the character).
      2. The point about how Sheila’s words to Gerald of ‘you fool - he knows’ demonstrate a dramatic shift in her personality: the little girl who was cooing over a ring has gone, and her passivity has been replaced with a fiery indignation, is a structure point about how the character has changed from the start of the play.
      3. The point about how Sheila was interrupted by her mother early in the play, but goes on to interrupt her mother later is a structure point about how the character has changed.
      4. The way in which Sheila’s use of interrogatives and Biblical imagery reflects that of Inspector Goole is language analysis.
      I might not preface each point with the type of analysis it is, but you can rest assured that all of my detailed preparation for videos is grounded firmly in the relevant assessment objectives.
