Ive done a ton of these fences and thats almost exactly how I do them spray shields drops and hvlp with lots of cleaning and Prep. It is a workout to do these iron fences for sure . you definitely feel it the next day. I have a set of outdoor drops and indoor drops for the overspray factor

No really, I have seen this guys other videos. He is not an experienced tradesman. Using Krud Kutter as a wipe down is not good AT ALL those areas are going to peel over time because I guarantee you the way he is wiping is not getting is clean. USE A TAC CLOTH! This guy way over rated
Agreed to a point. I've seen other vids where degreaser used in replacement of sanding. And once I seen the bolts on the fence I realized that I would have taken it apart to work on it in the shop
How much should I charge for a job like this?
You have lots of patience to be doing that. I am now mostly to Wallpaper and when I go back to Paignton, it’s a real labour because I love doing Wallpaper more and all of that bending and sanding is so tedious; I’ll give you a ton of credit!
The verticals are called stiles. It is often referred to as spindles but we all know spend those are round decorative.
Stiles are ladders that go up and over a fence. Spindles are typically round and made on a lathe. Pickets are typically square. Pickets are the most correct term for the components commonly used in the span of a wrought iron fence section.
Anybody ever use electro static sprayer for metal like this? Years ago we used them, made the masking much faster

For the white pants, you could get some white fabric paint and cover it up. Might not be good as new, but at least you won't have black knees.
Do you follow the same process and use same materials for an aluminum fence?

I work oil based alot here in Texas, all interior trim and cabinetry is oil based. Cleaning your hands is easy but a bit harsh bc you gotta wash your hands with some paint thinner which could dry them out if you don't immediately hit em with some soap and water.
Thank you! I'm spraying an exterior steel staircase. But I'm already committed to using a Graco Painter Plus. I'm going to thin the enamel with Xylene, because I am limited to a .015 tip and the primer recommends .017-.019. I'll be using a .315 tip. Hopefully, it will work. Any words of wisdom? KEM Bond Metal Primer and Alkyd Gloss Enamel.
No disrespect , it should be good for a year or two 😁🤫 not had any luck painting rust surfaces. Though you did an exceptional job ,products have limited performance .a weenie roller is a wizz roller I think .very good discription explaining trimmers if weedwacking and snow shovel chipping if this gets snow were you are. A true professional.

If you do weekly iron projects look into an electro static sprayer.
Personally electro static sprayers are for a more controlled environment spraying (booth production). Outside in different environments there's a higher risk of injury with grounding.

I have commercial gates similar to those in your video. I have a graco 390 airless sprayer. I would not make sense for me to buy an HVLP setup because I have 40 linear feet of gate. Can I do the job with an airless with a 119 tip?

Hey I just have a question regarding your prep. I’m no expert I just wanna learn. But wouldn’t it be better if he scrapes and sands all the rust and paint that’s is peeling before using the degreaser? Would it be better if you use the degreaser last ?

If using an acrylic latex paint in a HVLP do you dilute it with water and is there a max you dilute ie 25% water, 75% paint? Thanks like the video's

I find that there are different types of iron gates there are cheap metals and there are better metals that is sometimes not built very well. the inferior usually bleed rust from their joints due to hollowing out. I started correcting this by using some clear silicone on those bleed spots. has been working just fine. Peace

Can I paint the inside first, then go off the patio on a ladder and do the outside or will it look weird. Or do I need to do each section in its entirety and then move down the line?

Sorry to waste your time asking this question but I can’t find it. I have a sander but can’t find the hook and loop sand pads or system you use on the sander. Mine has those hooks that you slot paper into. Do I buy a new pad to receive these times of sponges? Any links? Happy to buy from you. Thanks!!

I have had to do small sections of railing occasionally. You can use rusty metal primer in spray cans, prepare for some overspray. Finish with 2-3 coats of satin, typically always black. You can do recoats pretty quickly on warm days. HVLP sprayers are very nice for control.

For sanding sand it by hand with sheets of sandpaper cut to size you don't get same results with sanding by hand, especially the way this fella demonstrates. That Rustoleum paint not the best option. For this paint to last over 8 years need PPG DTM DTR two part urethane. If you paint a fence like this the work will not last. I am licensed contractor for over 30 years in California. This job will look good for couple of years but will eventually fail.
I ruined my knees by not using knee pads on some many paint jobs , please start useing them your knees well that you ..ps did a fance like this with a small roller ,wish I had the sprayer you used , thank you for your passion and great work..

I haven't seen a video on how best to CLEAN spray equipment
Just have a 5 gal bucket with clean water and run it through the paint machine till it comes out clean. Some sprayers have a garden hose attachment u can put and it eliminates the need for a 5 gal bucket. Disassemble the gun and little parts and clean by hand with a toothbrush. That’s what I’ve been using it’s not too bad.

A have 2.5 weeks preping and painting 3.5 sections of 6x8f iron fence I feel like doing great job but taking too much time A plywood board helps a lot for the over spray

Consider using RYOBI One+ 18v battery (multiple batteries required) sanders no wires needed...
I personally use a DeWalt 4400 PSI 4 gallon per minute pressure washer with a venturi sandblasting attachment, leaves nothing behind... Not even concrete. The pressure washer sandblasting does not create sand clouds and the sand can be sun dried and reused, use blue plastic tarps instead of canvas or paper due to water. The pressure washer can be used to sweep up the area for and sand over spray.

I used a wide body kitchen knife for taming my porch wrought into submission. Fast violent arm obviates the slow sanding routine.
Hey there I'm helping my dad paint his wrought iron fence and we're using a foam brush, the problem I'm running into is that it's leaving streak marks on the horizontal parts in between the spindles. Would switching to a different type of brush help me or is it just bad technique?

we spray our primer on wrought iron fences . we prime it all regardless. we have 2 guys spraying , one on each side going different direction on each fence square to avoid flashing. we dont tune the spray down as much because we found heavier fast coats seem to lay out smoother after 220 sanding and tack cloths. we also use cardboard and try not to use wimpy drops due to the stickyness to your feet .

Straight vegetable oil disolves the paint off of skin then use straight dish liquid to lather then rinse.

Wire wheel on a small grinder will clean that whole fence in 20 min. I do 2 miles of fence every year. Your working too hard.
Very nice work. Not easy as so very tedious as done this myself before hard work.
One suggestion is (Unless I can't see them on you) is to consider wearing Kneepads to protect your knees on that hard cement!!
I am almost 70 and for years my next door neighbor was an orthopaedic surgeon and warned me when he saw a very younger me working on hard cement ground kneeling no pads.
He walked up as home for quick lunch in his MD clothes Waved his finger at me pointing at my knees saying No, no, and no.

I bought some nice knee pads at Rodda paint store in my town of Ontario, Oregon so nice to have on. Never would I not wear them.

I was thinking about using my electric paint sprayer to paint my chain link fence with silver (metallic) rust-oleum chain link fence paint. It has a thin viscosity, and says on the can that there's no need for thinning, but also only mentions brushing/rolling it on. Do you think it's doable with the sprayer or am I out of my mind for even considering it? Btw, it's oil based.

Hey Chris! What do you think about rust converter ? I used to use it first as a primer then rustoleum . If you get it on your skin use baby oil . I used to spray out automotive bays at Cadillac in San Diego I’d wear a spray suit Vaseline my face ,mask, eye protection still get that shit on me . Kept some baby oil gel in my spray box . I have drops that I sprayed “interior “ and “ exterior “ on them .

Thank you so much for the education. I've been out of the painting world for many years. The info on the Appallo sprayer unit vs the air less was one of my biggest worries doing a wrought iron fence with the over spray an product waist issues.

IM feeling like a pro..... I figured out that U shaped spray doing my railings. Its a PIA to not get those missed dry spots if you dont do it this way. So easy to not see a spot you missed. LOTS of prep for my railings and fence. Thanks for this video.

Best video I've found on the topic. Lots of useful tips for my dual swing gate project. I've replaced several 3/4x3/4 inch square tubing pickets and sanded down all the other pickets that didn't need replacing. I probably went a bit too far with my 80 grit flap disk on my angle grinder, but it got it clean. Your sander approach is MUCH faster.
