Thanks man. I did this fix on my Miata today and it works very well so far. I used only two pieces of electrical tape for the vents that were still "half good" and four for the others. Works like a charm!
After pointing the eyeball all the down and all the way up, I simply placed a small strip of electrical tape on the exposed outside edge of the eyeball and that solved the problem without removing any parts...
I tried all the different methods this was the best way to get the trim apart without damaging anything but I liked using two gift cards to release the clips with a screwdriver you can crack the brittle dash.
Just as a follow up here that unfortunately, the old felt was saturated with ArmorAll and the glue on the original felt was dried and fell apart when attempting to remove it. What I ended up doing which worked out great but took a little more time was to remove all the old felt and clean all the parts in warm soapy water. I then found an identical felt tape on Amazon and applied that to inside of the vent holder as well as the ring that goes on top to hold the vent in place which is part of the original equipment on the NB Miata. You can do a search on Amazon for this part number if anyone is interested: FELT-06/BLK0755
Good job, except the way you removed the vents. The correct way is to rotate the eyeball up, insert a screwdriver into the exposed slot, (there are four of them) and then rotate the entire vent 1/4 turn. The retaining clips will now be out of the slots and you can easily use your threaded cord to simply pull the vent from the dash. Your method could break the retaining clips in the dash. I also replaced the old pads with the furry side of Velcro strips, which already had adhesive on them.
This has been a problem with all six of my Miatas. If you fully rotate the eye in any direction that exposes the felt pads, you can, with a pocket knife, fold the pad upon itself, doubling the thickness. Two minutes - it works.
Didn’t you remove the eyeball by the passenger window but when you popped it back in, it was the right one, above the tombstone? I guess it really doesn’t matter since I’m sure the process is for all 4.
That screwdriver is a no no! You left a dent in your crash pad ;( Just feed an additional rope in horizontally too. That will help you get a more even pull :)
@@CptOakley great tutorial by the way. I recently purchased an 04 MSM and put the eclipse vents in mine. I kept the old droopers and re did the felt just so I had spares.
@@SchuboxProductions I know those Eclipse vents are very popular. Thank you for the complement. I am curious how the e-tape adhesive has held up, especially in the scorching heat we get here in Socal.
Cramer Ward-Collings It's been 8 months and my vents are still tight and working great. I do move them fairly often so they are standing up to the usage.
thank you! I just found a good way to remove the vents. get two pieces of plastic from like.. a soda bottle, and slide them in on either side so they push down the tabs. then you can remove the vents easily.
Antoine Duplaix Mine are both. The previous owner stuffed a bunch of what looks to be a business card in half of them so I can barely move them. The others have nothing and just fall constantly lol
It appears that I did not break any of the tabs holding the vent, but I had to pull so hard that one of my other dash clips came flying out. F#ck this method, I'll try a credit card on the next one.
Good tips… I modified your methods for my NB - it took me about 30 minutes, and they’re working like new.
Thank you.
You explain the process very clearly and precisely, makes for an excellent tutorial!
Oscar Lehan Wow, thank you. I'm happy to be helpful.

I second this. The first tab I tried to remove snapped.
I just watched your video and did all four of mine. Very informative and it works perfectly with your repair method. Thank you for posting.
I'm so glad that it was helpful!
Good job on the video. You explan and demonstrate well.
Thank you. Twas my first video so I'm glad to hear the positive feedback.

Perfect. Really well done on the explanation on how to do this. Mine have been flopping all over the place. Going to give it a try today.
Adam Hessler Thank you for the kind words. Hope everything goes smoothly for you.

Adam Hessler Thanks for the update. Good to know that we can just replace the felt directly.
Nice. Just fixed my last droopy. Method worked perfectly.

You're very welcome. Glad it was helpful.
Nicely done.
Thank you.

absolutely fabulous,thx man
THANK YOU! These things are a bit frustrating.
You're very welcome
Electrical tapes adhesive tends to not hold up great to heat. I would reccomend cutting new felt if able.
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll be doing an update video soon now that it's been a couple years to see how it's holding up.

Did the dash pad recover from the indentation made by the screwdriver? I used a credit card to prise mine out.
The dent did come out. I'd imagine that if you really went to town, it would leave a permanent dent.
Great video... thanks
Awesome! you ever tried the 3g eclipse vents?
I haven't. I've heard good things about them, but I want to keep the stock ones just for originality.
CptOakley hell yea man! They honestly dont look that much more different. You can also close the vents
Caleb Spencer that's true. When these get loose again I'll look at maybe getting some.
is this fix still working?

Good idea there. I'll have to keep that in mind for next time.
What do you do about driver eyeball drooping?
Cocaine 😂
LOL
Thanks man!
You're welcome. I'm glad it has been of some use :)
This work on nb Miata?
Yes it does
Wow, I’d just buy a new vent.
I was like "oh cool I have the same problem" but no, my vents are not floppy, they are stuck

" just like that " yeah, just like that I broke the clips.
Oh no, I'm sorry that happened.
