  • Thought some of you might like an actual side by side comparison against two turbochargers. The GT2554R is rated by Garrett for a maximum of 270bhp, while this version of the GT2860R is rated for up to 360bhp. Depending on your setup, those numbers can be exceeded (ex: my car).

    YESH! Greg video! Awesome! I'm in a big modifying streak on my car, so your videos are like eyecandy to me right now. I'm really interested to see how this will change your car characteristics. And if your engine survives ^^

      +Totally Legit Gaming [TLEG] I have another BV I'll probably upload tomorrow or Tuesday that's a "first impressions" video, but I've already started collecting more data above that via MS logs and Virtual Dyno. So much fun so far!!

    Thank you for such an informative video. Since you swap back and forth between the turbos on the same motor with only a change in manifold, could you describe the boost build differences? How do they compare in how they build boost and fall off towards redline?

    I'm coming back to this video now that I'm looking to buy my own turbo setup. I keep searching the internet for comparisons between these two (GT2554R vs. GT2860R). Would your advice be to just stick with the GT2554R for stock engines looking for quick response? That seems to be my conclusion based on the forums. However, those forum articles over on mturbo date back to '09 or earlier. Has turbo tech changed that much? Have you thought about the RS line of Garretts?

    The largest different which you didn't note was that the 53.8 you were referring to was the inducer of the turbine wheel; which you cannot see. The exducer which you were visually showing is around 6mm larger in the 2860rs. This difference and the 9 blade (gt) design is what gives it the jump in 50hp compared to a t25/t28 turbine wheel

    hey Greg new subscriber love both your channels just had a question if you are familiar with sheet tab on the 1.8 Miata apparently it's something to verify that the engine has been overheated just curious to hear your thoughts keep up the good work love your videos thanks in advance

      Do they have the tab stock? I always thought that was something you added after a head gasket or something for future reference.

    Hi Greg, love your channels, and i have to say that i've learned a lot whatching your videos! Thanks a lot for doing all this "how to" stuff! Since i'm going to boost my 2000 Miracle edition 1.8 Miata, i'd like to ask you if Garrett GT2560 is different on the hot side from the GT2560R, because i'd like to use a GT2560R (since here in Italy it's cheap, and i cannot find a NON R version) with Begi manifold and downpipe. I know that both the turbos regarding flanges are identical, but i'm sure you know much more....! Please keep doing video because we all learn a lot from your experience!! Thanks mate!!

      The two versions of the turbo are the "T2560" and the "GT2560R". The only difference is the GT turbo is ball bearing, and the other one is a journal bearing turbo. Both are excellent choices for the Miata engines, the ball bearing one will perform better but is more expensive.

    • @Alfatester
      @Alfatester 7 років тому

      +Greg Peters I'll go with the gt2560r version!! Here in Italy it's 819€ (something like 950$), but it worth the money! Thanks again Greg, especially for your videos!!!

    hey, man, been watching your vids for a long time now. what do you think of a tb0363 for a 1.6? it's a t3 50 trim .52/.48, internal mesuments are very similar to a gt2554r. I can hit you on Instagram of that's easier to communicate on.

    • @1993z32
      @1993z32  7 років тому

      If it's similar to a 2554 it will probably work excellent.

    I recently picked up a Miata and a bunch of other parts in a trade recently and one thing the Miata came with is a Garrett .42/.48 and I was just wondering what your opinion would be on that specific turbo. I have a 92 1.6 with a 1.8 5 speed and rear end.

    • @1993z32
      @1993z32  8 років тому

      ".42/.48" isn't really a model of turbo, I'm guessing those are the housing a/r's? Does it have an ID tag on the CHRA or any other markings? 5-bolt turbine outlet?

    Hey where does your GT2860R fully spooly at?

    • @1993z32
      @1993z32  4 роки тому

      On this car it was very laggy and couldn't hit full boost until around 4000-4200. This was also the big A/R GT2860, compared to something like the modern GTX2860R it's very outdated

    • @1993z32
      @1993z32  4 роки тому +1

      There really aren't any turbos that are more or less safe for an engine. It's all in the tuning!
      That being said, the GT2554R is a much more suitable turbo for a 1.6L street car.

    how do you know so much about cars?

    • @1993z32
      @1993z32  8 років тому +11

      +Skycat_22 Literally 18 years straight of reading and researching and talking to people that know more than I do. I constantly want to learn more and more, I'm addicted to it! It all starts slow, learning about oil changes and spark plugs, and you just keep building on your knowledge base. I try to learn something new about cars every day. The more you know, the more you realize you don't know. I've still got so much to learn.

    i had to drill my 2554r stud holes too, stupid begi manifold. i hate that. whats the point?

    • @1993z32
      @1993z32  8 років тому +1

      +Ryan Wolfe Mega strong studs that won't stretch. But honestly, so much headache. The worst part is how big the nuts are, makes install so much harder that it needs to be.

    • @89ry89
      @89ry89 8 років тому

      +Greg Peters installing the nuts on the head side of the manifold is more difficult the manifold does not give you enough room to get more then tiny turns of all the lower nuts.
      But then again if installing is the only complaint we have with the begi manifold that isn't too bad lol

    • @1993z32
      @1993z32  8 років тому +1

      Ryan Wolfe Outperforms the Flyin' Miata manifold for the same price too. Although the customer service of FM might outweigh that benefit, lol.

    • @kjwade
      @kjwade 8 років тому

      How much would you want for it? I'd probably buy it I went from a 2554 to a 2871 and I think the 2871 is too big I miss my spoolup. A 2860 may be perfect. If you would rather not say it here I'm Wade5k on Instagram we have a message thread already

    • @1993z32
      @1993z32  8 років тому

      Kris Wade If you think a 2871 spools too slow, I would avoid a 2860 also. They have the same hotside so the spoolup is only going to be slightly faster due to a lighter compressor wheel. Do you know what your turbine a/r is on the 2871?

  • @hexrx
    @hexrx 8 років тому

    Greg, any ideas on the effects of compressor housing size and spool?

    • @1993z32
      @1993z32  8 років тому

      To be honest not really, all I know is that a lighter/smaller compressor wheel will help spool up just a little bit only because it's lighter, but that's partially negated because they move less air at any given wheel speed. (If I remember correctly, the compressor wheel in my 2860R moves the same amount of air at 140,000rpm as the 2554R moved at 155,000rpm). The turbine wheel and housing have a much greater affect on spool up. I'm planning on upsizing my compressor setup on the GT2554R to make it a 2560R which should give me a good idea of spool changes!
