  • Infinity IRS Beta, Kappa 9.1, Kappa 8, Kappa 5 Center - The “Stonehenge Speaker Array”. I don’t see a lot of infinity IRS Beta demos on UA-cam, and I did not see any demos of these speakers in a surround configuration. Apparently 5.1 music is not anymore popular than quadraphonic was in the 1970s, but there are a few titles released from time to time.
So, what’s going in here? I am playing a DVD of Dream Theaters eponymous album on an OPPO 203 Blu-Ray player into a Denon AVR-X6200W 11.2 Channel amp configured for 9.1 playback as follows: Denon front channel preamps into the IRS Beta servo crossover, which splits that signal to an SAE A502 power amplifier feeding the Infinity IRS Beta panels with ribbon speakers, and an Adcom GFA 555 amp for the IRS Beta woofer towers. The Denon includes a class D amp rated for 4 ohms, so the front wide channel output is driving the Infinity Kappa 8s, Rear channel is feeding the Kappa 9.1, Center channel to the Kappa 5 Center wired in series through a pair of Infinity Reference Fours, and finally a surround upper rear pair output is feeding some old Bose 301 series II speakers mounted above the Kappa 9.1s. (so, the Denon is directly driving a total of 9 speakers, while the fronts and subwoofer have their own power amps - 12 “speakers” total, counting the Betas as 2). A Denon Subwoofer preamp output is sent to the Sub Woofer, a BIC Acoustec PL200 II. There is still another unused subwoofer out, which would provide stereo sub frequency, and another pair of speaker outputs that could be sent to an upper front wide channel, for 11.2 channels total... I will probably stick with 9.1, kind of amazed the Denon is handling all these 4 ohm loads as it is.
Prog Metal is probably not the best sounding music for these speakers, acoustic guitars, orchestral strings and vocals sound superb, overdriven electric guitars not so much, but I had just hooked up and configured the Kappa 8s, and this DVD was handy.
Side note, the phone preamp on this Denon amplifier is surprisingly good, I was amazed at how much better my Technics SL 1200 MK2 sounded when I replaced my still working Denon AVC2000 with this 30 years newer model. Perhaps I will do another demo with some vinyl.

William Turner :) Center channel is the official weakest link, but the Bose 301s on upper rear channel duty are a close second. Actually a budget system, for the most part, found pretty good / low ball deals on most of it.

JoeRock next door to the studio room. I record in the studio, make a quick you tube, walk 10 feet away and watch it on the big screen in the theatre listening room. Then repeat.

Howdy John: you must be Irish like Me as I am trying to do the exact thing as you already did...I have the infinity irs Betas as well, also the Carvers and Martin logans and Infinty kappas and two center speakers, ML stage X and and the motion 40...All the Speakers are 4-6 ohms...Problem is I am trying to setup surround sound on what I am using...I have the Marantz AV8805 Preamp with a Cary theater 7.250 Amp (6 speakers and the center) The Marantz preamp goes all the way to 13 speakers and 2 subs///I have the Oppo 205 as well....I don't have the servo for the infinity , it came with the Bryston servo 10 B LCR (supposed to be a lot better)....I have a Pioneer SC-95 that I used to power all of these at the same time, I was astounded it could handle all of these 4 ohm speakers...So I get a bright Idea and started buying the above listed equipment thinking I could/would have surround sound (at least music coming out of every speaker, like your setup ) I picked up another 3 channel amp to hook up to the marantz for more rear speakers and two carver mono blocks..Not an easy question...How the heck do I hook it all up so that I have music coming out of all these high quality speakers at the same time, as does yours....lol Before I had the beta Woofers working on my SC-95 but now the Subs out aren't working with my new set up grrrrrrr But dang does it sound great what I do have going....The marantz has all the bells and whistles, why can't I get it going ??

Seems like you have too many controllers / pre amps? You need to pick just one surround processor, I am thinking. So, for example, Oppo to your best surround processor...that processor needs to be "the boss", set up / configured for total speakers, and then the class D amp needs to be told which channels it will handle directly, and which ones will be handled by power amps (pre amp outs). On my Denon, which I assume is like your Marantz, I set speaker config, amp assignment, and wiring of course. Then its a question of program material itself, if I want to hear the 5.1 mix as intended, I select Direct mode which gives me 5.1 in, and 5.1 out - so some of the speakers will not be working. If I select a surround mode like "MultiChannel Stereo", the Denon will take the 2 channel, 4 channel, or 5.1 channel input and synthesize a 9.1 channel output. To get all 9.1 channels to work in direct mode, I would need a source that supports that mode - either streaming or blu-ray - have not run across an actual source yet.

@@ProgRockKeys Thanks for the reply..My Marantz (Preamp) AV8805 is 13.1 for 13+ Speakers . The Oppo only goes to 7.1, I mainly just use it for the Dac with Roon. My Cary Amp is a fantastic amp hooked up to the marantz preamp. I have gone through all of the setups , finally got my Subwoofers going. My main thing that I am trying to do is just have sound come out of every speaker that I have. I could do it on my pioneer sc-95. But man oh man I'd just be happy with 9.1 which my marantz supports. Its set on Multi channel right now but I just can't get any more speakers added on to speak lol ...Its always something simple and frustrating :)

@@ProgRockKeys How did you set up your Oppo 203 for 9.1 ?? My setup on my oppo 205 only goes to 7.1 then 5.1 .....

michael silbaugh So, relative to the single processor (Denon in my case, Marantz in yours) you have inputs and outputs - 2 different topics. And 2 different types of modes to run with, Direct mode means inputs go direct to outputs- so if source is 2 channel, Direct gets you 2 speakers-that’s it- but you get the pure input sound, if that’s what you want. Other modes like Multi Channel Stereo can generate surround channels at the output, even though they do not exist at the input. So, I can listen to vinyl in 9.1 even though it only came in with 2 channels. Same with audio input from the Oppo, it can run in Direct and get me 2 channels from CDs or 5.1 channels from SACD/BluRay/ DVD -A or I can flip to other modes and expand those channels up to whatever I can handle as outputs, in my case 9.1. For OPPO wiring, I have analog 2 channel output wired as Game input to the Denon analog input, and the OPPO hdmi goes to BluRay hdmi input. If I want to hear the OPPO DAC, I switch to Game - OPPO DAC is only used on analog - and play a CD, and I MUST switch Denon to Direct , otherwise I am not really hearing the OPPO DAC.OPPO also has analog outputs for up to 7.1, but my Denon does not support analog inputs for 7.1 - I should have purchased the next model higher for that. But - as it turns out - my Denon has the same DAC as the 203 anyway, so in my case I cannot hear a difference. If you want to hear your DAC in your 205 (better quality than my 203) then you need to wire 8 analog outs from 205 to 8 analog inputs of Marantz, and you MUST select direct mode (not multi) AND you will only get to hear speakers required for the source material - be that 2 channel or 5.1, some movies might have more channels in the blu-Ray. As soon as you tell the Marantz to use some other mode, even bass management, then you are really hearing the DAC of the Marantz, not the OPPO.
