    As mentioned below, the audio system fetched just $156,800 at auction. Fritz died of ALS a couple of years ago, suffering an affliction that slowly removed his ability to use, then appreciate, the project that took so much money and work. A nicely done Washington Post story from today (Jan. 13, 2024) also chronicles how his obsession pushed his marriage into divorce and caused a rift that prompted him to disinherited one of his sons. I was actually surprised to see that the equipment sold for that much. Reminds me of what a stamp-collecting friend told me many years ago: enjoy the hobby, and know that the collection will someday be worth 10 cents on the dollar, if that.

    I recently finished my "system" here in my $200/mo. trailer/shack up a draw off a holler that leads to a valley in Yancey Co. NC. The most expensive part of my system was for the coils for the crossovers for my Parts-Express homebuilt 4-way/5-driver main speakers of all "clearance" drivers. I'm using 2 amps, 1 off craigslist, the other from the Goodwill store. It's a 7.1 system of all thrift store speakers other than my main stereo pair. It F'n rocks with clarity and I'm still hearing nuances of some recordings I hadn't noticed before. I think Mr. Fritz and I would get along just fine. It's about a passion for the art regardless of means...

I am sorry that he was so uncompromising over the years, and that this caused such strife for his family. Scott, I can see that this was a bit of an attempt to connect with your father on the one thing that was so important to him. I suspect Ken died with regrets about his treatment and lack of time with his children. It was quite an achievement, but it came at considerable cost. I’m only a few minutes into this video and I’ve been checking out the comments and I’m even more stoked than I was by the title. I’m 56 and back in the 70’s and 80’s a Hi-Fi was a major focal point for the home. Inviting someone over to hear the latest Peter Frampton album was considered a date. Sound quality was all about bragging rights! I had the Pioneer A-90 integrated amp that was 200 watts per channel at .002% total harmonic distortion. It was the first amplifier to eliminate switching distortion by using push-pull circuitry between the low and high voltage supplies. It also had a pre-amp for the phono input. It could be switched to Moving Magnet (MM) or Moving Cartridge (MC) which could be switched between 33 ohms or 100 ohms. I also had the Pioneer SG-90 17 band per channel 2/3 octave EQ and the bands went from 16Hz - 25KHz and it had .001% THD. I always wanted the Polk SDA-SRS speakers but I couldn’t afford them. Back then the Infinity Reference speakers cost $50,000 and were what all other speakers were supposed to be compared to for sound quality. I financed a $3,000 Pioneer stereo when I was 17 and was making $3.25 and hour! It wasn’t just about having loud music to bang my head. I wanted to feel the triplets Steve Gadd played on Aja in crystal clarity and the squeak of Bonzo’s Speed King on Since I’ve Been Loving You!

    I’ve too grown up hooked on stereo systems since the 1st day I heard one at 5yrs old. Today I’m 71 years years young and I must say that I’m truly moved by the documentary about Ken Fritz. I was amazed with his engineering knowledge of so many diverse areas from listening room design to speaker design, to turntable and amplification design. Unfortunately, it came with a cost to his family. I too have a passion with all my albums and many different systems set up in my home. I found that the family thing was a challenge that was something I needed to master. Mr Ken Fritz, I believe that I really understand you. You built your “SWAN SONG” dream including your perfect listening room. All the time while I was watching your Documentary, I thought that this room, this sound system, should never part. If I knew of this man’s achievements had past, I would have purchased the home for a good price and set it up to achieve his wish and his final legacy. Well it wasn’t to be. Well, Mr Ken Fritz, I will say this… “YOU’RE IN PARADISE LISTENING TO THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SOUNDING-SYSTEM THAT IS BEYOND THIS WORLD ALONG WITH AN INFINITE AMOUT OF JOY. If U R thinking of 'mirror imaging' something 2 increase volume, a better solution is 2 use a bigger &/or more powerful driver instead, 2 keep the size 2 a minimum. Ideally everything would come from a 'point source' but the closer U can get 2 that the better, 4 'coherence' & 'imaging' =) I've heard lots of line arrays, & the BG panels & so on. Hi Ken...
    I'm 61 and found out 6 months ago that I have a stage 4 cancer recurrence and it's not curable. I've done very aggressive treatment to knock it back and buy time, but they can't really tell me how long. So I'm also facing my mortality directly in front of me.
    I feel blessed to have heard your excellent outlook and attitude on your diagnosis, and want to thank you genuinely. We don't know tomorrow, and that does often make today sweeter.
    I'm an audiophile as well... Built a very nice system with bi-amped Definitive Technology towers. It was a hot rod, and a beauty... Liquidated and downsized from necessity, but the music is still magical.
    God bless you, sir... My very best wishes, and may each day be full of love and peace with your family.

      I'm going to try to make you feel better! You see, while I'm in good health, I'm old, far older than you are, Shiela, & so I don't go out any more than necessary to avoid Covid. {This is because as we age, eventually the immune system diminishes.} I'm a member of 3 Vacation Clubs, these are Marriott, Diamond - Hilton, and Shell - Wyndham. I've paid off all of the loans on these, & so continue to pay the, "maintenance fees." A couple of years ago, I asked a friend of mine, Michael, if he'd like to travel, to great destinations, at no charge to him, as if someone doesn't use the points, weeks, they will eventually go: Poof! Evaporate! Disappear! Michael & his wife, & relatives, have gone on a number of great vacations, they're very happy! The point here, is that one of Mike's brothers, also has stage four cancer. Yet, it seems to be progressing very slowly, if at all! For example, in the middle of last year, I was told that on his, "bucket list," {so to speak!}, he wanted to go to New York City, several months later. I made the necessary arrangements, and frankly, sincerely hoped that he'd, "make it!" And, he did! Had an excellent time, and in fact continues to not only, "Hang in there," but still works! Can you see what I mean? I've observed that in a situation like this {or, frankly, anyone!}, if one keeps a positive attitude, worry as little a possible about anything, no stress, plenty of rest, sleep, proper diet, surround yourself with close friends - do not shut them out! - and, well, I believe that you'll do as well as possible!

      A 1,500 pound record player is stupidity, just 2 B as ridiculous as possible, when a B&O for cheap from Ebay is just as good at isolating from speaker vibrations in terms of what U will actually hear, & that's the truth. Try it! =D They have a very effective leaf spring floating arrangement on the platters, with everything small & light, etc.

    • @Deathrape2001

      @@omgwtfpwnd The only 'measurement' that matters is how it sounds 2 human beings =) If that means it's 'frequency plot' or something is 'all over the map' it really doesn't matter, because the overal result is the whole point of the music. 4 instance, a lot of guitar amp speakers have absurdly jagged ragged crazy response curves, but 'fits with the band' & so on. Nature is dirty. It's also important 2 have natural dynamics & slam & texture & blablabla = 'response plot' is like comparing women by 'body fat ratio', as if the placement doesn't even matter LOL = like if 1 gal has a bunch of fat at her waist, while another has it in her tits, etc.

    • @omgwtfpwnd
      @omgwtfpwnd 2 роки тому

      @@Deathrape2001 Stupid. Really?
      It's a standard, which does not mean that it's the end all and be all of FR measurements, just that it's consistent AND repeatable. That's what a standard is. Sure, room measurements can show you a different picture, but they are also meaningless in isolation. Which room? Your room? Big room? Small room? Heavily damped or live? Room measurements can never be used as a reference standard as everyone has different rooms. That’s why it’s important to measure frequency response in an anechoic chamber.

    • @Deathrape2001
      @Deathrape2001 2 роки тому

      @@omgwtfpwnd U R just playing the devil's advocate game, automatically contradicting everything trying 2 generate controversey & troll people. U ignore the obvious fact that I said frequency response plots do not tell you how good something will sound, because for human beings it is only 1 of many factors & lots of speakers and other stuff has very ragged response but sound great because of dynamic accuracy & detail & so on. Also the charts don't tell U about 'ringing' & 'resonance' problems, unless it's a waterfall thing, which still doesn't tell U about clarity or dynamics, at all, etc.
      A super heavy record player is stupid because any random cheap B&O or other 'leaf spring floating' type turntable has no noise or feedback problems at all, so it's totally pointless to 'go big', other than 2 look silly, like a nitro burning junk mini car =)) Also this guy isn't even really an 'audiophile' as he just picks Krell & gets their whole line basically. Everythign from Krell sounds harsh, like Bryston but thinner = not 'musical' at all, just ANNOYING! This is from personal experience at stores that sell it along with other things. My personal favorite (most realistic sounding) amps are Conrad Johnson, or the stupidly overpriced very powerful bazillion tube power amps Carver put out =))
      As speakers go, I make the best I've heard. I flip houses so don't put a lot of effort into it, & whenever I try 2 invite investors all they want 2 do is steal it = unwilling 2 do an NDA, etc. There R trix 2 it =) blabla... don't need them in a fancy room = can just stuff them in corners & go & sound WoW, or away from walls, or whatever... the room is almost irrelevant, other than the closer 2 a symmetrical reflective cube it is, the worse your room will sound. The best 'room treatment' is 2 make the shape of the room itself into an air space that is very uneven & 'all over the place & close 2 symmetrical horizontally but aysymmetrical vertically. That is the best way to 'correct for room resonances' = not 'EQ' or 'panels', etc. Gigantic beds &/or furniture help a lot, like tall cabinets, etc.

I have never heard decent sound, let alone good sound, at any PA event in my entire life. Nor do I expect to. That's not their goal. You can't have that kind of output with that kind of reliability and also persue high sound quality. Its the same in movie thieaters. More garbage sound just because the room is too big.
