SR 34046 Braunton flies through Andover | Steam Dreams tour to Weymouth | 27/6/23

- Today's video is a massive trip covering SR West Country Class Bulleid Pacific 34046 Braunton on her trip out to Weymouth. It was hauling a Steam Dreams tour (under new LSL management) from London Victoria to Weymouth, out via Basingstoke, Salisbury and Yeovil and then Weymouth. It returned via Poole, Bournemouth and Southampton, rejoining its outward route at Basingstoke. 34046 was taken off at Yeovil for servicing. Today's trip covered lots of new ground around Dorset for me so it was all very exciting!
I started off from my local at 07:59, and headed down to Banbury and then through Oxford, Reading and Basingstoke. At that I headed over to Andover on a SWR 159, meeting @adtrainvids9569 and @WestCountrySteamVideos. 34046 came absolutely rocketing through!! We then continued further through Salisbury to Tisbury for Tom and Sherborne for Arlo and I. Here she was strangely sent wrong line, which made for quite an interesting shot against a lovely backdrop! After this and some supplies gathered from the nearby Sainsbury's, we continued on to Yeovil Junction where 34046 was being serviced. There are a few shots here of both the locomotive and the crew attempting to recoal her, which was at times rather humorous. At this, now without the company of Tom and Arlo, I took the 14:51 SWR service down to Yeovil Pen Mill and changed for a GWR service to Dorchester West, where I saw 34046 arrive. Here some bad news filtered in, there had been a fire on the line (not caused by 34046) at Upwey, meaning 34046 would be held at Dorchester West until that was sorted. Sadly that meant I was quite worried about timekeeping for getting home, so I walked over to Dorchester South and waited. In this time the line cleared so I headed down to Upwey and met Tom again, hoping for a bit of power up Upwey Bank. Sadly, the run was abysmal and the 47 was doing about 95% of the work up the bank.
At this I travelled down into Weymouth and changed, heading with Tom back up on the 19:02 service to Waterloo. Tom left me at Southampton and I alighted at Winchester, where she crawled through despite being on greens. I think it was quite an atmospheric shot though. I was also only about 30 seconds from being fully bowled by a late running Bournemouth service lol. At this point I had to use my special plan to get home as the it was past 21:00 and the last XC service back to the Midlands was about 30 minutes ahead of me. I therefore took the 21:18 service to London Waterloo, alighting and then taking the Bakerloo line through the London Underground and then resurfacing at Marylebone. After some TTIs at the gates hassled me about my ticket not being valid (it was lol) I took the 23:07 service from Marylebone to my local and I arrived back in through my front door at 1am.
Thanks to all this who made this possible, 34046 and her crew, LSL, Steam Dreams, TfL, SWR and GWR. Thank to to those whom I was fortunate to meet and talk to today, to Tom and Arlo as always lads and no thank you to the driver of the 47 for that pitiful ascent of Upwey Bank lol. Today was one adventure and a half with many new routes covered.

I regarded that Andover station is the best station because it has railtours whizzing through here at speed

THE GREAT BRITISH STEAM TRAIN CON ???
What's the point of PAYING for a steam train ride, when that Diesel on the rear is clearly doing all the strenuous work ????
So you will NOT hear the steam loco slogging its way up the hill from Weymouth to Upwey, showing what its capable of !!!!
Indeed this method of operation is hardly "GREEN" with two locos creating pollution, when only one is needed to haul the train !!!
Whilst I largely agree with your point that such use of a diesel is unfair on passengers and not the best for the environment, there are often many factors at play regarding their use. In this instance the use was due to an earlier lineside fire nearby. However I am with you in hating diesels and their use on railtours lol. Regards, Dan
