  • Seen from Exhill, the Exe Estuary is surrounded by low cloud, drizzle and a gusty wind, a challenge to smooth panning but luckily “Braunton” - now thankfully restored to original name and number - appears on time and nicely between the showers where we can witness just what “free-runners” these locomotives are as 75 m.p.h. is maintained with ease all the way down the Estuary. The low cloud and drizzle is still with us as 34046 makes a spirited start out of Kingswear, really putting on the power as she passes the ferry slipway. The weather closed in again soon after this shot and I was forced to call it a day, at least the rain is warmer now, so I guess it must be summer!

Thanks for the beautiful camerawork and what a magnificent, effortless and noiseless run! The load must be in the region of 400 tons, I believe British coaches being around 35-40 tons each? In any case a great run and great video, thank you.

Hi and thank you for your kind and much appreciated feedback. Loaded coaches are taken to be 40.5 tons and large tender (which is part of the load) 55 tons so for 11 coaches you are looking at 500 tons total. Best regards, Alan

Hi Stephen and thank you as always for your kind and most welcome feedback. The first location is a struggle to get to but well worth it and I seem to be the only one who films from there. Best regards, Alan

At least you caught her at speed. I got her gliding through Newton Abbot and slogging up Torre bank, was around 20 minutes late after that! Great video, and interesting to note that there is no lining...

Hi and thank you for your kind comment. Whatever we were presented with today, it had to be better than the 30 minute slow crawl from Dawlish Warren to Newton Abbot that we witnessed last weekend!! Interesting observation on the lining, I must say I didn't notice, maybe it will be added later. Best regards, Alan

@@Steamclips yes, that slow crawl really did mess everything up! I must admit I didn't notice the lack of lining until I saw it at Torre

Now the masquerade is over and she's properly run in, it's back to the old Braunton of scintillating performance. Brilliant.

Superb video Alan. Shame the weather was not that good. Fantastic last clip at Kingswear. Enjoyable watching. Capturing the sound of an engine working is unforgettable. It like us capturing Clun Castle working up the incline at Ironbridge on the last steam train on that line. Best wishes C&A

A lovely sight and sound, especially the last minute or two as she accelerates with her 11 coaches and the 3 cylinder beat is heard clearly! This is especially pleasing to me as I have just received 35005 in BR blue in OO 💖

Hi and thank you for your kind and interesting comments. Although I prefer a scale of 1/1 these days I quite understand your excitement in receiving a scale model as I used to scratch build in 4mm scale. Best regards, Alan

These bullied pacifics are certainly making a name for themselves in preservation and on these tours .

Hello Brian and thank you for your very pertinent comment. As with many steam locomotive developments launched after WW2, theses locos were a real success with probably the most free steaming boiler of all. Luckily, a good number survived into preservation having been sent to Barry for scrapping. Regards, Alan

@@Steamclips it was just the chain drive was erractic and the valve timing awry the rebuilts are my favourite as more reliable and imposing locomotives but of course subject to debate both types ,magnificent boilers on all coal grades used .
