    Using decoy bombs to tell the Nazis that the fake airfield had been noticed would reduce the chance that the Nazis would build decoys in future, and so reduce the odds that a decoy might be missed in future and bombed legitimately. That's not necessarily what happened, but it would give a legitimate reason for the tactic.

    The Ghost Army consisted of a carefully selected group of artists, engineers, professional soldiers and draftees, including fashion designer Bill Blass, painter Ellsworth Kelly and photographer Art Kane. Many West Point graduates and former Army Specialized Training Program participants were assigned to the 23rd, and it was said to have one of the highest collective IQs in the Army.

      Yep. They were a fascinating force. They not only used fake planes, tanks, soldiers, etc, they also used audio recordings and fake radio traffic to fool the enemy. They'd use any means at their disposal to fool opposing forces.

      ​@@putzthewondersloth at tge time of Operation Overlord (D-day landings) the commander of the ghost army was Patton. That was to give credence to the deception tgat the Western allies were actually going to land at the Pais de Calais and the Normandy landings were themselves a diversionary attack

    The concept of deception is not often explored enough in WWII not by the Allies or the Axis forces. We really should be seeing more video's on what both sides did to fool their enemies.

We're less than 20 yrs away from the 100th anniversary of WW2 beginning 😉 W/the large number of WW2 history buffs, I think it would play well. Ken Burns did a decent job on the 'War' doc series but it didn't look exclusively @ the action.

      @@quantum_cricket8555 Yeah there’s plenty of movies about a single event of WW2 but not the whole thing. It’s such a good storyline from Japan’s brutal conquest or China/South Pacific and Hitler’s rise to power. All the major battles and turning points of the war and all the political strife and the vastly different big personalities of all the leaders. All the different locations and climates. There’s plenty of interesting material for a long series.

    Belgium actually still makes inflatable tanks, and russia has been reported to have bombed quite a few of them

      Where is this? Ukraine I presume? Surely bombing in Belgium, rubber tanks or not, would be considered an act of war. When Russian jets flew in British airspace over the north of Scotland, British jets were mobilised and followed them until they left British airspace and it made headline news.

    The British had a HUGE sense of humour in the midst of WW2 - In North Africa, the Germans could not figure out where the RAF Radio Station - Call Sign "Hemorrhage" was. The Germans were confused and they never figured out where it was so they could attack it. Typical British humour - it was located in Blida, in Algeria.

    The Ghost Army must have studied method acting, essentially getting inside the heads of the subject of whom their elaborate ploy would be built around, and then "getting inside their skin." Sheer genius, honestly.

    I remember watching a History Channel Documentary that talked about the Ghost Division. And in one story that really stuck out was when a French civilian saw US Soldiers lifting and moving a tank by carrying it over their heads. When that French civilian told what they saw to German soldiers those soldiers believed that the American Soldiers were far stronger if they were able to easily lift and move a tank that weighs hundreds of tons of steel over their heads with ease.

      @@woodworkingandepoxy643 well first the inflatable tanks were used in the UK, not on the continent. Ghost division existed but using vehicle mounted mock-ups. If a German soldier would see a inflatable tank being lifted, it be clear to him what it was. So that story is bs

    The years after the war had a bunch of the kids from that program unable to find their parents. Since a lot of the records were destroyed during the war. So was very sad for the kids since they had nothing to do with that government.

    The average bomb didn’t land within 8 miles, something like 20% got within 8 miles

      Later in the war when low altitude daylight bombing was used accuracy improved immensely. We just didn't have the technology to pull off night or high altitude bombing with any accuracy.

    My favorite story from WWII on deception was when the allied forces fearing a strategic city was going to get bombed heavily hired a magician to recreate a full-blown City several miles ahead of where the actual city was. This fooling the German bombers and making them bomb a fake city at night.

    There were more than 5 nationalities involved in the the D-day landings. The primary forces were American British and Canadian, but there were also the free armies of France, the Netherlands, Belgium, czechoslovakia, Poland, Norway, Denmark and soldiers from Australia, New Zealand, and Rhodesia. The Americans had the hardest time assaulting omaha beach, but plenty of other allied soldiers died during the invasion of France that don't get the respect and credit, because we only really see the perspective of American made movies.

    Decoys are not obsolete at all, they're being used in Ukraine right now, both wooden ones (for HIMARS) or decoy missiles which have improved massively by being able to give off the radar signature of certain planes or missiles. Those are used with the storm shadow missile to reduce the risk of a successful AA intercept.

    How did we embarrass the Nazis? We brought over 1,500 Nazis to America after the war. Warner von Braun used to hang the five slowest Jews and in his munition factory in Germany during the war. Then we brought him to America and he started NASA
