Dropping a wooden bomb after their completion had been done is good old sarcastic British humour . This made me 😂
Hello
Dropping fake bombs on a fake base would be demoralizing to those who created the fake base. It is no different than calling out a friend playing hide and seek.
"Who needs steel when you have rubber"
-ghost army soldiers, 1944
The British: You may have outsmart me but I outsmart your outsmart
Using decoy bombs to tell the Nazis that the fake airfield had been noticed would reduce the chance that the Nazis would build decoys in future, and so reduce the odds that a decoy might be missed in future and bombed legitimately. That's not necessarily what happened, but it would give a legitimate reason for the tactic.
I can’t believe they gave each other wood.
Was the wood good?
@@bigearl3867 🤣
Lol😅
@@justintyme720 great @ handle
Two of the best kinds American and German engineered lol
Germany made fake wooden aircraft:
De Havilland Mosquito, "Hold my bomb."
Hurricane fighter, "Hold my bullets".
I didn't know about the ghost army, what a fantastic story, i almost cry. I can't imagine how things would be today if we didn't have all these heroes. ❤️
24:31 how my dad explains my grandpa used to go to school:
The Ghost Army consisted of a carefully selected group of artists, engineers, professional soldiers and draftees, including fashion designer Bill Blass, painter Ellsworth Kelly and photographer Art Kane. Many West Point graduates and former Army Specialized Training Program participants were assigned to the 23rd, and it was said to have one of the highest collective IQs in the Army.
Yep. They were a fascinating force. They not only used fake planes, tanks, soldiers, etc, they also used audio recordings and fake radio traffic to fool the enemy. They'd use any means at their disposal to fool opposing forces.

@@coolmanpantsman 😂
@@putzthewondersloth at tge time of Operation Overlord (D-day landings) the commander of the ghost army was Patton. That was to give credence to the deception tgat the Western allies were actually going to land at the Pais de Calais and the Normandy landings were themselves a diversionary attack
The Ghost Army was led by General Patton
The concept of deception is not often explored enough in WWII not by the Allies or the Axis forces. We really should be seeing more video's on what both sides did to fool their enemies.
Plural of “video” is “videos”
Yea that'd be great

I wish there was a high budget series covering all the major events of WW2. Not a documentary but with actors and CGI and what not. Like Game of Thrones format except WW2
The war genre isn’t that popular, so it’s not really worth it.
@@maxpro751 Um... Saving Private Ryan... Band of Brothers? We're less than 20 yrs away from the 100th anniversary of WW2 beginning 😉 W/the large number of WW2 history buffs, I think it would play well. Ken Burns did a decent job on the 'War' doc series but it didn't look exclusively @ the action.
@@quantum_cricket8555 Yeah there’s plenty of movies about a single event of WW2 but not the whole thing. It’s such a good storyline from Japan’s brutal conquest or China/South Pacific and Hitler’s rise to power. All the major battles and turning points of the war and all the political strife and the vastly different big personalities of all the leaders. All the different locations and climates. There’s plenty of interesting material for a long series.
there are like hundreds or thousands of ww2 movies and shows showing basically every relevant thing that happened. just gotta find them
@@maxpro751 it actually is for the most part
I think the Ghost Army needs a movie
I think they have a documentary on the History Channel.
Agreed
Belgium actually still makes inflatable tanks, and russia has been reported to have bombed quite a few of them
Where is this? Ukraine I presume? Surely bombing in Belgium, rubber tanks or not, would be considered an act of war. When Russian jets flew in British airspace over the north of Scotland, British jets were mobilised and followed them until they left British airspace and it made headline news.
@@GM-tw4el Yes Ukraine
Love the Ghost Army segment ❤
This was really interesting. I knew of fake tanks etc. Didn't know of that ghost army and it was a proper division. Pretty cool
It seems like Russia is employing similar tactics to these in Ukraine, I see a lot of Russian Tanks getting blown up is what I am saying.
And their turrets are getting inflated into the sky
plenty of ghosts too
Russian tanks are not made out of wood, they are made out of aluminum.
It's all going to plan
In one way or another….
Most tanks, planes or personal ar just decoys that don’t really function otherwise 😍
Absolutely love you guys at TIS, keep up the great work!
Actually, Ukraine has used decoy HIMARS...
The British had a HUGE sense of humour in the midst of WW2 - In North Africa, the Germans could not figure out where the RAF Radio Station - Call Sign "Hemorrhage" was. The Germans were confused and they never figured out where it was so they could attack it. Typical British humour - it was located in Blida, in Algeria.
Lol. Love me some British humor.
Best ever video you created!
Good stuff
Ghost Army saved a lot of live on both sides, if you think about it.
THE GHOST ARMY IS LITERALLY THEM! I LOVE IT!
from the 9-20 minute mark of the video seemed to be an old video while the rest seems modern.

holy f*ck a decoy airfield?!?
6:05 That is not the French Coast. That is Spain.
Anyone else notice this is like 3 entirely seprate videos all in one?
You can say what you want about the allied forces but they had a lot of heart and courage, Blessed Be.
I love this so much. You can weaponize literally any skill or profession if your life depends on it!
The airfield migth be fake, but the AA defences around them are very real.
Anyone else see the part where they reused an old video.
I wonder if Churchill gave the specific order to drop wooden bombs as a chuckle ?
What is a little bit funny is that the animation for this is exactly like the SCP animation.
Around minute 13, it says “commensurate actors.” This is pretty awkward usage. I think you meant “consummate actors.”

The Ghost Army must have studied method acting, essentially getting inside the heads of the subject of whom their elaborate ploy would be built around, and then "getting inside their skin." Sheer genius, honestly.
*we do a little thing called "trolling"*
I remember watching a History Channel Documentary that talked about the Ghost Division. And in one story that really stuck out was when a French civilian saw US Soldiers lifting and moving a tank by carrying it over their heads. When that French civilian told what they saw to German soldiers those soldiers believed that the American Soldiers were far stronger if they were able to easily lift and move a tank that weighs hundreds of tons of steel over their heads with ease.

@@jantschierschky3461 I'm pretty sure it was a fake tank
@@alek5272 no kidding Einstein
@@jantschierschky3461then what's bs about it?
@@woodworkingandepoxy643 well first the inflatable tanks were used in the UK, not on the continent. Ghost division existed but using vehicle mounted mock-ups. If a German soldier would see a inflatable tank being lifted, it be clear to him what it was. So that story is bs

This was probably great for morale. Imagine the much-needed humor that comes from humiliating the enemy.
The years after the war had a bunch of the kids from that program unable to find their parents. Since a lot of the records were destroyed during the war. So was very sad for the kids since they had nothing to do with that government.
FSSF is a force to be reckoned with.
"If your enemy is secure at all points, be prepared for him. If he is in superior strength, evade him. If your opponent is temperamental, seek to irritate him. Pretend to be weak, that he may grow arrogant. If he is taking his ease, give him no rest. If his forces are united, separate them. If sovereign and subject are in accord, put division between them. Attack him where he is unprepared, appear where you are not expected." - Sun Tzu, The Art of War
Better message- "we thought you guys could use this"
Theu should of circled back around when the soldiers left their cover and dropped real bombs
The average bomb didn’t land within 8 miles, something like 20% got within 8 miles
Later in the war when low altitude daylight bombing was used accuracy improved immensely. We just didn't have the technology to pull off night or high altitude bombing with any accuracy.
The Soviet Air Force chief of staff in WW2 was Armenian air marshal Sergei Khudyakov
He participated in the Yalta Conference 1945, standing behind Stalin
Man, i thought i had multiple dejavu while watching. It's like when there's a word count on an essay so i repeat a phrase over and over and slightly changing how i phrase it every time.

is that a repost of ur video 1 year ago?
They should make a movie about the ghost army
Wooden bombs lol
Take a shot every time he says wooden bombs challenge (I have liver failure now)
My favorite story from WWII on deception was when the allied forces fearing a strategic city was going to get bombed heavily hired a magician to recreate a full-blown City several miles ahead of where the actual city was. This fooling the German bombers and making them bomb a fake city at night.
Well that was done by all war nations.
Bit funny, innit?

“I was saving the planet from an Axis of Darkness, while you were back home opening National Parks! Yes!” Winston Churchill
Pls do more videos on the Northern Ireland troubles.
Its a very interesting topic and i think youve only mentioned it once
Wow
6:05 its the spanish coast being shown, not the french!
There were more than 5 nationalities involved in the the D-day landings. The primary forces were American British and Canadian, but there were also the free armies of France, the Netherlands, Belgium, czechoslovakia, Poland, Norway, Denmark and soldiers from Australia, New Zealand, and Rhodesia. The Americans had the hardest time assaulting omaha beach, but plenty of other allied soldiers died during the invasion of France that don't get the respect and credit, because we only really see the perspective of American made movies.
Good way to train
I don't find anything about the history of WWII or any other for that matter, making me laugh.
1:30 Well, the English built real airplanes out of wood. Planes like the Mosquito.
wow
Some things command lets happen for troop moral.
The FssF was trained in Colorado.
"All warfare is based on deception. Hence, when we are able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must appear inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near." - Sun Tzu, The Art of War
Decoys are not obsolete at all, they're being used in Ukraine right now, both wooden ones (for HIMARS) or decoy missiles which have improved massively by being able to give off the radar signature of certain planes or missiles. Those are used with the storm shadow missile to reduce the risk of a successful AA intercept.
