    This is the first time I had the privilege and pleasure of watching your video and I must say I am blown away by your approach and humility. I also observed that you respond to many of the comments, which is a rarity. After subscribing to the channel, I will go through as many previous videos as I can and I am sure it will be my absolute pleasure. You are doing great and I wish you the best for the future. Thank you.

    Subscribed! Loved this video! I’m looking to go to B&N for various rounds of Criterion pick ups. I’m wanting to pick up Blue Velvet, Two Days One Night, Following, The Kid, the Police Story set, Salo, and all the Kubrick films on Criterion. Just picked up Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and Mulholland Dr. a couple days ago. I want that Bergman box set but I can’t be spending so much money! 😭

    Thanks for letting me know of the sale. I usually order online but this time decided to go into Barnes and Noble. Spent a couple hours going through their selections. I finally decided on these titles: The Tin Drum, The Immortal Story, Weekend, The Tree of Life, La Chienne, Insomnia, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, The Samurai Trilogy and finally the Bergman set. Looking forward to watching these titles and maybe picking up a few more before the sale ends.

    zatiochi was my first criterion box set purchase. I managed to stack coupons back when it was released. I was able to use a 40% off black Friday coupon. it's such an amazing box set and an amazing series of movies. Also, the only criterion I'm looking at right now is the police story set. As always thanks for your videos Daisuke, and keep up the quality work.

    I got the Bergman set yesterday. 50% off plus another 20%. $120. Tried to get last sale but just couldn't do it. So had to this time. The extra 20% was from getting the membership for a year, so will be able to get an additional 10% off on top of the 50% next sale sale as well.
    I really want the Zatoichi box set and have eyed for years. Will try to get next sale.
    I wish they would re release the akira kurosawa box set that was only DVD and out of print. 100- 25 films. They need to release on Blu-ray. And would love to see a really nice Hitchcock set as well someday.

      Yes, I too would love to see the AK set released again, but this time on blu ray. That set is really nice (though I hope that, if Criterion were ever to re-release that set onto blu ray, they might also include an extra disc with supplements).
      Cheers my friend and I hope you are well.

    There's something so exciting, yet overwhelming about these huge box sets! I really lucked out when I got the Zatoichi dual-format set four years ago. It wasn't during any big sale period, but B&N accidentally listed it online for only $90 (I believe they had intended to type $190) and my order was one of the very few to actually successfully go through! It was a blind (swordsman) buy for me and I was really impressed! I sort of binge watched them over the course of a week back then, so I'll admit that most of them kind of blurred together in my mind. I really need to rewatch the series sometime and maybe review each film individually so I can keep them all distinct from each other in my head! Which films are your favorites in the series?
    I knew the Olympic set was huge, but wow! You aren't kidding - it's a brick! When I was a kid, I used to be a little obsessed with the Olympics and I still watch as much of them as I can each time, so I'm definitely interested in this set. It seems like such an interesting collection, but I can't imagine I'd rewatch it much, so I just can't justify the price at this point. Not to mention that behemoth would need its own shelf!
    Speaking of behemoths, I got the Bergman set last year when it was on sale for Black Friday. I was pretty hesitant because I already had a few of the individual releases (and I'm not a huge fan of the Bergman films I've seen), but I decided to get it... 40 movies by an acclaimed director was just too good to pass up! I haven't had time to dive into it yet, but I'll definitely have to check out your other videos on it before I do.

    With my birthday coming up I have both the Zatoichi and Godzilla sets on my wishlist, I’m finding it hard to pick one that I’d like most. I’ve never seen a Godzilla film before, I’m sure I’ll love the best ones, but I’ve heard there are some bad ones there. But I love the release, I’m a big fan of Samurai films, Lady Snowblood and Kurosawa’s films, Harakiri etc... I adore them, but I don’t know if they’re all great, there are more films in the zatoichi set... (a collector dilemma)
    Right now I’m siding with the Zatoichi set but...

      And what a lovely collection of titles you managed to get. Fantastic!
      And did you get the Godzilla Criterion blu ray? If so, then I think you will find that, included as one of the supplements is in fact the Raymond Burr US version of Godzilla, and so you are essentially getting two films for the price of one! Well done my friend. Cheers.

    Hi Deisuke! I am currently preparing for a Zatoichi watch through for my channel with another youtuber who has not yet seen the Zatoichi films so I am doing research and so forth. I hope you're able to cover them at some point as they're one of my favorite samurai series out there as I could only find this video on your channel when typing in Zatoichi. I can't wait to see a new viewer's reaction to the series through the series we are doing. One of my main gripes about the release, though, is that they were unable to put in the final movie that was made roughly 20 years after movie 25. I know there's a 100 episode television series that Katsu made in between the final two movies that is impossible to find anywhere. I hope someone is able to release that on bluray at some point. Shout Factory has been doing a lot of television series recently so maybe they will? Hope you're doing well!

    Of these sets, Zatoichi : The Blind Swordsman is the one that captures my imagination. I'm a fan of the Samurai genre and ordered Seven Samurai (thrilled to have a copy of this) during the current sale. As regards sports films, Raging Bull, Chariots of Fire, and the documentary film: The Two Escobars are favorites. What is your favorite Bergman film, Daisuke? I have not seen them all but was fascinated by the Seventh Seal.

    Just found you from over at r/criterion and I really enjoy your videos! You've got yourself a new subscriber :) I've got a question for you, in this video I think you said you live in Japan and I was wondering what it's like to collect criterion films over there? Did you have a video about that?

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  5 років тому +1

      Thank you very much for your comment and for subscribing! This is very kind of you.
      As for your question, it is very interesting that you raise it, because I am planning to answer another question from another viewer in a video that I hope to upload soon, but such video addresses your question about how I feel about collecting Criterion in Japan.
      I suppose that I can say briefly now that, for one thing, as a basic premise, Criterion does not officially market or sell its products here in Japan. So, this means that for purchases of new products, I usually have to rely on internet shopping like Amazon US etc. The Criterion Collection web store does not ship to Tokyo, and so I cannot shop from there directly. This means that usually I do not have the benefit of handling the items before purchase, and I also have to pay shipping fees for overseas shipment. Also, I usually do not have the benefit of checking to see if a product has a little dent or a bend in the case or the like, and so I sometimes have to receive a product that is a little "roughed up" so to speak. At this point, I don't mind if a box is a little bent in the corner or the like. However if there is obvious damage (like a case is broken or a disc is broken, etc.) then I will have the items replaced.
      There are used Criterion items that are sold here as well (through Yahoo Auction and other used stores in Tokyo), and sometimes the benefit is that sometimes (not always), because people here do not necessarily know or appreciate the value of a Criterion release that is, say, OOP, sometimes you can find an OOP title on sale used, if you are lucky. This has happened to me on a number of occasions here (for example, I was able to find, at a very cheap price, a blu ray of the Man Who Fell to Earth, as well as the Carlos Saura Eclipse set; I know another friend here who was able to find, at a very cheap price, a used blu ray of Chungking Express). It doesn't happen all the time but it does happen.

      @@DaisukeBeppu Oh wow, sounds like there's a bit of a process to get what you're after. Glad to hear you can sometimes find stuff in person over there because that is my preferred way to shop too. You can't beat looking at the case and/or disc in store. I actually work at a used music/movie/video game store so we get Criterions in sometimes and I always get excited and buy what I can afford haha. Anyways thanks for answering my question, have a good one!

      This makes sales so fun and difficult at the same time! What to get! There are so many to choose from! And yes, the box is pretty expensive, even at sale price, and so perhaps it might be an idea to get a lot of individual titles instead.

    Daisuke, I was meaning to ask you this but I keep forgetting. This has nothing to do with the Barnes and Noble sale and the set isn’t part of the deal unfortunately, but would you recommend the “Essential Art House: 50 Years of Janus Films” DVD set? I don’t own it, but I think I’ve spotted it maybe once or twice in the background of your videos. I understand the set is a mammoth set, and includes many must see films, but I was wondering if the set itself is worth the very high price tag considering the format and all that. Please, do let me know if it is worth the purchase.

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  5 років тому +3

      My dear friend.... so “Essential Art House: 50 Years of Janus Films” ... I would say that, given that most of the titles can be found individually (and often in individual blu rays), and given that this Janus Films set is a DVD only set, and also taking into consideration the price tag, it is a set that I purposely did not mention here because it is hard for me to recommend it except for people who are really into collecting, or on the other hand, for those people who are instead looking for a kind of "one-stop shop" for classic films, if that makes sense. Don't get me wrong: it is a great set and I am glad that I own it, but I would say that there are other areas of the Criterion Collection that might be more worthwhile. Of course, if one can get one's hands on the Janus set at a low low price, this is a different situation and thus I would recommend getting it. I hope that helps my friend. Anyway, this is just my own opinion and I know other people who own the set and just love it!
