Great box set suggestions. Nice shoutout to Jean-Louis Trintignant RIP(who is a very underrated actor imho)
As always you explain it with pure lyricism. Love hearing you talk passionately about film titles. Such a joy. Keep it up.
Great suggestions even if it’s hard to miss when choosing a Criterion boxset. These releases definitely feel like some of the most special ones. If anyone is checking for more suggestions - I’ll throw my weight behind the America Lost and Found set as my favourite and the World Cinema Project releases. A word for the lighting on your video as well. ❤️
Yes! America Lost and Found is another amazing set. There are so many great sets to choose from within the collection, as you mention. Cheers, Chris!
Great choices. The entire Before Trilogy box set content is on The Criterion Channel until July 31, 2022.
Elliot!!!! So happy the Criterion sale is going on at Barnes and Noble!! 😎 I am absolutely enjoying the Criterion movies that I’ve been buying as I’ve so far gotten The Sword of Doom and The Cranes are Flying! The Criterion Box Set I have is the Bruce Lee collection!! It’s got films like Enter the Dragon, The Big Boss, etc. 😎🎬 Really love it and am happy I saw your other recommendations!!
Hey Mac! I hope you enjoy The Cranes Are Flying! I think it’s a masterpiece.
I ended up finding a deal on Facebook Marketplace that ended up snagging myself the three following boxsets for $105 total. All of which were blind buys, but purchasing them for $35 each was a steal and I just had to get it.
- Before Trilogy
- Three Colors Trilogy
- Apu Trilogy
Wow that’s a great deal! Well done on finding it.
Brilliant as always, Good Sir. I would only add America: Lost and Found with some of Nicholson's best work as well as the late, great Peter Bogdanovich's Last Picture Show.
It’s a very good set indeed! Thanks for watching, Djordje!
Love the Before Trilogy! Can't recommend it enough. I also like the John Cassavetes Five Films box set. John was one of the pioneers of the independent film movement and a mentor to Scorsese. His movies show what you can accomplish without studio funding. Barry Jenkins said there's a film school in that box set
Loved your discussion of David Lean's box-set.
I love this set because I am a Britisher at heart.
"Blithe Spirit" is a stand-out with a fantastic story, fantastic musical score, and great-great acting.
I saw it when I was younger and then 30 years later I saw it again and it "knocked me out!"
I don't think any other person on the face of the earth would overreact to this movie like I did.
Maybe, Rex Harrison was "a bad guy", but he is outstanding in this movie, like he is in every movie he made.
This movie is one of the greats!
Great video, lovely presentation as usual thank you very much
That’s very kind of you! Cheers for watching.
As always, fantastic recommendations pal. Well articulated why you think these sets are worth picking up, if I didn't have them already you would have convinced me to do so aha. Cheers 👍
Thanks pal! I know we both have a love for Demy!
The David Lean films are great! Also like the Apu Trilogy box set by Satyajit Ray, and the Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema box sets!
Great choices, Elliot! Absolutely essential choices from the collection that I'd certainly second. One I'd throw in for in addition to Three Colors, is Dekalog. Can't go wrong with Kieslowski! Cheers, pal!
Dekalog is another great recommendation. I love it so much. Cheers for watching, pal!
Dekalog is my favorite. Such an amazing accomplishment in Polish cinema.
Absolutely! A masterpiece in every sense
I just got the Criterion release of The Game, and I absolutely loved it. So far there isn’t a film in my personal Criterion collection that I don’t like 😂
Glad to hear it, Jacob!
I kept getting the weird feeling that I had seen the movie before, when I was pretty sure I never had. To me it was a blind Buy criterion based solely on my love of David Fincher films.
I loved the Jacques Demy so much that I bought a second box set and gave it to a friend.
Wow, you’re a great friend in that case, Rob! Hope you’re well!
the case for the before trilogy is so damn cool looking
Yes I love the artwork!
Was just looking for a video about this lol, thanks!
Good timing :)
That David Lean set is highly interesting. I bet it is not a UK release though. Even just by the fact that he directed Lawrence of Arabia makes him one of my favourite directors, delving into more of his films such as these would be a blast.
+1 as other have said about the Dekalog. My personal addition would be the Qatsi Trilogy, especially if you're a fan of minimalism or Philip Glass in general. And I'm not merely talking about the music.
That’s a great recommendation, Kevin! I do love Glass’ music work for documentaries an awful lot.
I would like to recommend Cassavetes box set and Luis Buñuel three film box set!!
Yes both brilliant choices, Juan!
the Jacque Demy box set is a super good value on sale because it works out to ~$10 per movie and they're all worth a watch
Yes incredible value!
Like the Demy box and The World of Wong Kar Wai which is fairly new. Surprised you could narrow it down so many to pick and almost all great
Hey James. Very true, so many great sets to choose from!
world of wong kar wai is good but i hear a lot of people say 2046 freezes at a certain point and stops playing
@@zach7042 I actually just got the set and it's working good for me. When it released there were indeed defective discs but I'm pretty sure they've fixed the issues since.
@@Zaz5y Ok well I'll definitely buy it then
@@zach7042 Nice! Hope everything goes well with it.
The Demy box set is one of my treasures. Lola, Rochefort and Umbrellas are glorious. Bay of angels is mesmerising and unique in its depiction of addiction and obsession. En Ville i found a bit of a let down compared with the earlier career highlights . And Donkey Skin….erm…..is Donkey Skin.
A treasure trove indeed! Thanks for watching, Simon.
Of course not all these box sets are available in the UK - Three colours trilogy and the Coward Lean set are Region A available on import. So a multi region player is needed.
The Three Colours trilogy is available from Curzon Artificial Eye here in the UK for anybody that loves the films but doesn't have their heart set on the Criterion packaging and accoutrements.
Hi Elliott,
How do you ensure you purchase a region b copy of any Criterion releases you pick up, or do you pick up region a copies and play them on a region free blu ray player? Personally i would like to buy region b copies if possible. Great video and many thanks in advance.
Atb and peace Andy H
Hi Andy. I have a region free player so I’m able to play the region A discs. For buying region B only, I’d recommend using Amazon UK, Zavvi, or HMV. Cheers!
B&N Sale! Yay!!!!
Exciting times!
@@ElliotCoen I bought Double Indemnity 4K, Woman in the Dunes, Eraserhead and Ashes and Diamonds.
Greetings from bonnie Scotland 👍. Man I'm gonna be skint after this hahaha
Will there be a UK 50% off on amazon this months? Or do you buy from the US?
Anyone know if Amazon is price-matching region b Criterions?
I don’t think there will be a UK sale to match unfortunately. Criterion in the UK isn’t actually managed by Criterion. Last time I checked, I think it’s Sony that just license the Criterion titles for release here.
What are your thoughts on the distribution label called Mubi?
Hey Jake. The movies they release are great but the discs themselves have issues. Very few special features, poor compression, audio problems. I’d avoid unless the discs are on sale for a good price.
@@ElliotCoen thank you, Elliott.
I wonder. If he does this again, does the Godzilla set fit the criteria?
I’d consider that a ‘big’ boxset. Perhaps I’ll do a video covering the bigger sets soon! Cheers
@@ElliotCoen I'd love that! Cheers to you too!
I have tried buying from Barnes and Noble but they don't ship to the UK, so how do you get your criterion sale films? Mark
Hi Mark. You can use a reshipping service, which will provide you with a US address to use. Your post then gets forwarded to your home address. Another option is to ask any US friends or family to help you out with reshipping. That’s how I do it. Cheers!
@@ElliotCoen Thanks Elliot for coming back with your response , keep up the good work you deliver in your BB tube informs. Mark
Damn, here I was hoping to save some money and then bam Elliot comes out with a video and immediately bought two box sets cause of his review. argghhh. lol
Haha I’m glad to hear it!
RIP Jean-Louis Trintignant. 😓
I feel like getting a cheap flight to the States
Haha, do it!
Dude, Godzilla box set. ‘Nuff said.
What happened to your glarsses?!!
They were reflecting too much in the light haha. I take them off or use contacts when recording now!
I like your voice
That’s very kind, Gabriel. I used to really hate my voice. Thanks for watching!
