Do I need to close off my hive prior to dividing it, and is there a better time of the day. I also will be giving a friend one of the divided hives, how do I transport and when would you move the new divided hive.
Hi Melissa, thanks for the great video, it was very informative. I lost all my bees due to flooding, I'd love to get back into it though, I can spend hours just watching the little beasties! Do you collect honey? If so, how often?
Hi Melissa we have bees from you and think we are ready to split. Is there a weight of the hive with the roof on so we can be sure the timing is right. Thanks for your bees, we love them!
Hi Zac the roof weighs approx 2.8 kgs in weight. Your hive needs to weigh approx 7.5 kgs in weight. I would recommend waiting till Spring to split your hive
I've been a beekeeper for 30 years now and i must say this is the perfect hobbyist bee. My native species is apis mellifera iberiensis, not the most forgiving.
What keeps my split hive from going back to the original hive? In other words, how far do I need to move them, especially if I want to keep them both on my property, and I’m hearing from others that I’m supposed to plug the hole for two or three days, but that seems a bit tough on the bees, no? Sorry for the run-on sentence.
Great job, a question , today I see a swarm from my tetragonisca angustula. Is good time to split the hive? What other indicator do you recommend. Due my english I did not get that part. Thanks!!
Hi Melissa I was watching Marty's gardening show and you come up on one of the UA-cams talking about the bees an I have taken on the decision that I want to go native stingless bees because I was dealing in European bees found it very difficult and lost all my hives so I've decided I want to give it a go but I don't really know much and I would like an expert to talk to me and show me how I was wondering how I can get in contact with you please
I'ts a great video!....if i may ask, do you have any tutorial on how did you make the bee hive box or did you just bought it in the market?, please excuse my grammar....I am interested in keeping stingless bees, thank you in advance!
Hi & thanks for an informative video on hive splitting. Could you let me know what the two bits of ply like material are in the bottom of the new hive base please & what is the tube for in the top section of both hives? Thank you.
Hi the black elbows are the entrance and exit for the bees. They normally block of one entrance for ventilation purposes. The bottom of the hive has two pieces of plastic that supports the brood and also gives the bees something to build off. I'm happy to chat
Hi Jezza, when I split a hive I never harvest any honey... just drain the top section. If you want to harvest honey you add a honey super, the bees will deposit excess honey there. On my website in the blog section, I have an article on Adding a honey super to your bee hive.
Studied this extremely closely when I split my first hive. Cold season is over and as far as I can see both hives are healthy and prospering.

Hi
i recommend waiting till after the bees have finished swarming. There are lots of reasons the bees swarm. Are your bees in a hive?
Yes, I have my bees in a box similar to your box. Thanks!
