I love how real and “not square” your coop looks like. It makes me feel better about the imperfect coop I have (made with reclaimed materials as well). Thank you for sharing this!
Thank you! I'm just now trying to figure out some "screen doors" for my additional chicken pens. I've used the old 6' wide by 14' long back porch cover from our house that was partially enclosed and has corrugated roofing. I've divided it into 3 sections for broody hens/chicks, and one section for any sick or injured hens if needed. But each section needs a door. So I asked around online and found old wooden screen doors (cuz I love the old look) for free, and am attaching 1/2" hardware wire to them to keep critters out. I really like your trampoline spring idea. Thanks for the ideas!
Big Thumbs Up. That's exactly what is meant by making do with what you have. Like the idea with the spring. Instead of bailing wire, attach a short length of dog chain to screen door. On the opening framing, drive a nail about 1/2 way slanted or bent away from opening. To secure, hook chain over nail. Easy to open/close with one hand. Then, if/when need to keep screen door open for some reason, drive another nail, bent same way on the inside wall. Hook chain over that. Thanks for sharing.
Just a thought maybe put 1 more latch down low so no animals can push in..if they can they will. Love your videos! By far my favorite UA-cam channel!!!
Venting... intake at bottom, air will flow to top. John, might need more venting near top of coop. Might solve problem as well. Beautiful job. Ladies seem happy and that's all that matters. Now... lets eat!
what is this " square" you speak of? never heard of it. function over form i always say. great idea to get some more air in there to them. i just put a fan up in my henhouse. they are really suffering in this ungodly heat.
I wouldn't have thought of using that spring like that. Cool I would have used the spring to pull the door shut. Then you would have had to use a bulldozer to push it open! lol
Great idea with the spring. I've been looking at all kinds of self close hinges and that spring is genius. I didn't have an eye let so I screwed a screw 75% in and ties the wire around it.
I just bought a chicken housecfrom a farm store. I realize, now, I could have made something better myself, for about 1\4 the money. Oh well. Any way I like your chicken house better. I just would like to see a photo of the hinges you ended up using on the screen door. I might put this thing I bought on Craigslist right quick and still make my own. Thanks.
Best part is " not square, not pretty but works. I'm stuck on same thing but fear that tiny gap can be exploited by predators. U have any trouble with that?
Why does it have to be square? Haven't seen an animal yet that cared as long as there was shelter over their heads and food in whatever served as their "plate". One good thing about animals. They seem to prefer function over beauty. :-)
hhmmm not bad i would make it a dutch door that way door can be left open at all times bottom would be all wood and top screened door , ppssssttt and for a roof on the coop look for old metal garage doors the solid ones its what i used gives them protection from weather plus shade if you get a double door but single door works fine too just double one stops heavy rain fall and snow from dirt floor on coop
Love the FREE door. And I'm sure those ladies are grateful and believe you are the most amazing chicken keeper ever! I've never heard a hen complain that her door wasn't square. Aren't doors rectangle anyway? Lol
Hey man, just subscribed! I've just got some chickens and was wondering if you had any cheap building plans that'll still build a sturdy coop. I've had mine for about three months but there house ain't much. I've got two Old English Game Bantams, one rooster, one hen. And I've got four Rhode Island Red's, they're all laying hens. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I\'m not sure but ,if anyone else needs to find out about easy chicken house designs try *Enlarbo Coop Build Wizard* (search on google ) ? Ive heard some great things about it and my work buddy got amazing success with it.
I like that you call them "ladies" - I do the same with my girls. I'm not sure if you know (but I thought I should point out) that the solid door to your coop looks like it may be painted with old lead-based paint. I've come across it before and it often looks like that when it ages and flakes. You might want to keep an eye out for the girls eating it! Bad for them, bad for you. Definitely no offense intended here - just looking out for other folks!
Not certain about the points made but ,if anyone else wants to uncover best chicken house designs try *Enlarbo Coop Build Wizard* (just google it ) ? Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my neighbor got excellent results with it.
Hi! Have you considered - Bikino Coop Mastery (should be on google have a look)? Ive heard some decent things about it and my coworker got amazing results with it.

The 'trampoline spring' idea alone was worth watching this video.

you know why a chicken coop has 2 doors........if it 4 doors it would be a chicken sedan

I'd check that peeling door paint for lead 😬
