Been waiting for this one. Best cymbals in the world to my hands and ears. Meinl traditional and brilliant byzance cymbals are just the all around versatile cymbals I use for everything. For practice I use the extra dry and vintage line for lower volume and dry sound. My favorite cymbals are the 14 inch byzance traditional thin hats, 18 inch brilliant thin crash, the 21 inch byzance traditional polyphonic ride, the 22 inch byzance vintage pure light ride, and the 20 inch byzance traditional China.
To me, Meinl is the only company that has every sound scape covered. Others try but just don't do it as well. I like that they went with their own sounds and then came back towards the traditional sounds and nailed those as well.
@@bishopoftroy no I ment what I said thanks. Sabian, zildjian, paiste, they all try to do a dry, dark, gritty sound like Meinl. Only after Meinl started making waves with theirs.
@@Ashlord alot try to copy their dry and dark sounds. And they kinda get there. Sort of. But they never get close to the dirty, gritty sounds. They all fall short.
I LOVE the Sand crashes (18”). It sounds “trashy” but not as trashy as an “effect” cymbal. I could see it being very useful! THANK YOU for all of your videos!! They are all top shelf and incredibly helpful. Well done!
Byzance Traditional are just an all time classic. Love it! Espacially the Crashes and the Ride. The Byzance Jazz Crashes are just superb, as well. The DUAL 22" Extra Dry Crash Ride is killer!
I've owned and played just about every series from Meinl (except for the Foundry Reserve), and I can say that they're the real deal. Their cymbals have consistently been great, the quality has been outstanding, the customer/warranty support has been second to none, and their commitment to innovating and covering every side of the tonal spectrum has them being heads and shoulders above the other manufacturers. This video was well done, with both the cymbals and even the drums sounding top notch. If I have one criticism for the video, it's the exclusion of the HCS Bronze series. It's easy to exclude them because they're less expensive and made of B8, but considering they're Meinl's only B8 line with its own range of specialty models (trash splash, trash crashes, trash chinas, and bells), it only makes sense to include them with the rest of their lineup.
@@drumcenternh This video really solidified my decision. I'm getting these for my birthday! (specifically the 15 hats, 18 and 20 crash, and 22 ride pack you guys have)
Solid cymbals definitely, I started using them in 2014 and finally I’ve completed the set I want. They are not cheap, but they worth it. Specially the Byzance series.
Love Meinl cymbals. My favorite hi-hats are the foundry reserves. Such a rich sound. I have a vintage sand ride in my kit, but I also have a mix of crashes from across the traditional, dark, and dual byzance models. All fantastic.
Have to agree. My 15" foundry reserve hi hats are my pride and joy. Love my sand ride, but I have to say they have to age to sound their best - the new ones like on this video don't sound the same, needs a few years of patina on it! Other than that, 18" dual crash, 20" extra thin hammered crash, 20" equilibrium China, fat stack, baby stack, and 8" brilliant splash, but I have my eye on a few more..
Yes, back in the days they only made budget cymbals which sounded cheap. The first Meinl which sounded good to my ears were the Raker (late 80ies) and Amun (in the late 90ies). With the Bycance they entered the top brands of cymbal manufacturers.
Meinl is the only company that accounts for every cymbal line to mix and match when they design their cymbal sounds. The only complaint I have, that would be absolutely awesome, is a raw bell hybrid that was 3000 g's or more. The raw bell ride was a cutting ride, but it was dark and usually in the 3600 g range.
This is a brilliant idea, brilliantly executed. Thank you for providing such a valuable service. Sure, a drummer interested in these cymbals will still want to play them live in a store before making such an investment. But this video is much superior to the usual sound samples on manufacturer sites, which either give you an identical pattern played on the cymbal with no other drums or cymbals in the sample (Paiste), or give you that plus the cymbals played along to a generic rock track (Sabian). This video lets you see and hear the cymbals played by a live drummer you can witness with your own eyes. Crucial project, perfectly executed. Ten out of ten. Cheers!
This is great and exactly what I was looking for as I was recently introduced to these cymbals on a friend's kit and thought the sounds were unique and interesting. I appreciate the side-by-side video as this helps me to hear the differences in tones and resonance of each of the cymbals. well done.
Great video! I've got Meinls across all Byzance lines except Dual and Extra Dry and this video speaks pretty accurately to the differences between lines. One or two of the cymbals here I have and they sound a little different in my space (to be expected) to the recordings here - as a tool to understand the ranges this is excellent. Any prospective shoppers should also be aware there are some gems hidden within these ranges which aren't featured here (22" Raw Bell Ride for instance) which are kinda like unique outliers. Again, really excellent work team!
Definitly. My two favorite cymbals…the traditional polyphonic ride and the traditional byzance thin hats which I prefer over the medium hats. They should’ve covered the artist concept line too with all of those amazing stacks. The fat stack is one of my all time favorite cymbals as well and equillibrium China.
I don't know if it's possible to convince me that there is a better line of cymbals than the Foundry Reserves. Just perfect in every way. Thanks for making this video guys. Must have been tedious but I, and I'm sure many other, really appreciate it. Hope this isn't the last one in this series
I honestly like the Reserves the least. The Jazz line and a lot of their thin models sound better in my opinion. Id go with Reserves if I was playing straight rock music for sure.
Those Pure Alloy Customs sound fantastic and embody everything I want to hear in a crash cymbal and more. Nice cutting attack with a quick, breathy, and complex medium-low undertone that lets you know it's there before getting out of the way right on time. Because of the way you guys are really attacking the crashes, this is the best Meinl crash demo I've heard to date. Fantastic job as usual. Also, I don't know if it's the mics, the Weathermasters, or both, but those Ludwig toms are throatier and more attack-laden than any Ludwig demo I've seen you guys make!
Fantastic stuff boyz -- thanks for doing this. I have a set of the Meinl Traditional's (the same set you all used but I think my ride is a 21") that I've had since 2013. To my ears they're the most even and overall pleasing sound to me that can pretty much work for almost any style depending on the player. Record really well which is important to me. From this vid I also really like the Brilliant and Pure Alloy Custom. Interestingly, for ride cymbals I favor the Dual or Dark line, so,...I will probably mix one of those in here soon. I also like the Sand ride.
That Byzance vintage pure line up was a pleasant surprise. From the looks of the cymbals you’d think they would be more on the dry side. But they have the perfect balance of washyness (not a word but you know what i mean) and dryness. Sounds killer
When I heard the MB10’s at the PASIC show here in Ohio 14 years ago, I sold all my 2002’s the next day. When I heard the Pure Alloys last summer? I bought a whole set. Will keep MB10’s for touring punk shows. But the Alloys are my go to rehearsing & recording pie plates. Just astounding!
Honestly, I was pretty blown away by the Pure Alloy Customs. Definitely sound better to me than any other B12 cymbals I've ever heard. Might even sound better to my ear than some of the Byzance cymbals.
I personally use the 18 in classics brilliant crash as a crash ride and I’ve really been enjoying how that sounds. I want to get a big apple 24 in ride, but until then I’m happy with how this sounds
@@escadrums2 also each cymbal is hand hammered so even the same exact size and model will sound different from each other based on weight and slight human differences in the hammering but mostly the weight. I would never buy a Meinl cymbal off a site like sweetwater or guitar center cause you are just hoping to get lucky and find the right sounding one. They are all gonna sound great but some are drier than others or trashier or heavier or thinner and so on. I only buy my meinls on mycymbal Memphis drum shop or other sites like that where you can hear the demo of the EXACT cymbal you are purchasing and buy that exact one in that demo.
I love my Meinl Byzance 20” Extra Hammered Thin crash and my 22” Dual Crash/ride. Next purchase for me is the 16” Extra Dry Medium Thin Hats. Meinl is da BOMB!
Terrific video!!! This so, so helpful and really packed full! Thank you for the effort of putting it together! Please consider doing equivalent video with other Cymbal manufacturers. I own a set of the Vintage Sands and one of Zildjian As & Ks. I really like all of the Brilliant series cymbals, and the Jazz, Dual and Pure Alloy crashes. I guess I’m becoming more of a light and bright cymbal guy as I get older.
I would never have considered listening to Meinl cymbals if DCP hadn't done a video on them because I only took Zildjian, Sabian and Paiste seriously. Didn't know what I was missing. I especially liked the Traditional, Brillant and Jazz lines but they were all impressive. I'm actually shocked at how good the line sounds. Thanks guys, for always producing such great and informative videos. And the Ludwig kit was incredible. From a sound perspective it's tough to beat their Classic Maple line.
15" foundry reserve hihat, 18" jazz extra thin, 22" dual crash ride or 22" extra dry medium ride, 19" dual crash. It's the setup that i'm in love with. Should i include 10" vintage trash splash? 😁
For me, I really like the pure alloy dark and the dark custom dual. I think both sound amazing. I try not to look at a brand when I go for cymbals just focus on the sound and the inspiration they provide. I am currently using the A custom line but with quick beat hats and loving that especially the 21" sweet ride. However, after listening to that Byzance Brilliant ride I might have to invest asap.
started a Zildjian guy, went to Sabian because Mr Weckl did, ended up at Meinl because they sound like what i hear in my head. the first thing i would add that i don't have is one (or more) Extra Dry Dual crashes. they're nearly perfect. also, yes, those drums sound sweet. i have more shell packs than i should, but i have to admit, they sound really nice.
( real name Jimmy Berlo) Pure Alloy's & Custom's are so precise & Powerful, / John Bonham would be using them! and the 3 different series of Classic Customs (and Dual version) are the best semi-pro Cymbals there are, back in the day there was no equivalent alternative.
GREAT VID, I have a couple of the custom dark. (Switching from Sabian). Love the meinl custom dual look and sound. I'm a "professional novice" with a mapex voyeger 5pc. I like to play classic rock from the '70s. Video was very inspiring and educational. Keep it up!

I'd like to see head to head comparison of the Pure Alloy and Paiste Giant Beat as it seems clear that is the cymbal they were copying.
In my opinion i think having the classic custom dual crash , the 15 inch dry hi hat , the byzance extta thin hammered crushed ride and thr fx cymbals of your choice is the most versatile choice so you can play most genres
I really love Meinl. I have, I think, 14 cymbals? Half of them are crashes. Across all sorts of ranges. Soundcaster custom, HCS Bronze, Mb8, Byzance, classic Custom brill and dark. Love them
Awesome video! Thank you for making this, super helpful! And the drums sound wicked. Not that I need another cymbal, but that Byzance Jazz line sound so good to my ears. No, not a jazz guy, they just sound so good and I want them to meet my 2B sticks.
I live in a city where every single music store has closed but one Piano store that sells you guessed it pianos. So these demos and others are critical for me to decide on gear.
Mic positioning mostly. We don't use a snare bottom mic and the two top snare mics are positioned so that they capture the drum sound and not a bunch of wire buzz.
The dog is a Zildjian endorser so he can't be seen on camera with another brand. You know how it is...

15" foundry reserve hihat, 18" jazz extra thin, 22" dual crash ride or 22" extra dry medium ride, 19" dual crash. It's the setup that i'm in love with. Should i include 10" vintage trash splash? 😁
Obviously throw in the splash!
However, after listening to that Byzance Brilliant ride I might have to invest asap.
just recently purchased the Mike Johnston cymbal pack, it's fantastic
This has taught me that I wanna buy like ten rides. My wife’s gonna love it
Usually a Paiste guy, but have some Byzance Brilliant Med hats and 22 ride.. Love them
started a Zildjian guy, went to Sabian because Mr Weckl did, ended up at Meinl because they sound like what i hear in my head.
the first thing i would add that i don't have is one (or more) Extra Dry Dual crashes. they're nearly perfect.
also, yes, those drums sound sweet. i have more shell packs than i should, but i have to admit, they sound really nice.
You guys are great players!
Thank you sir!
( real name Jimmy Berlo) Pure Alloy's & Custom's are so precise & Powerful, / John Bonham would be using them! and the 3 different series of Classic Customs (and Dual version) are the best semi-pro Cymbals there are, back in the day there was no equivalent alternative.
I love the vintage and extra dry series. So cool. and a great price too!
Great video guys. For me the Byzance Dual are absolutely spot on :)
The original Pure Alloys don’t get enough love IMO. Balanced and get out of the way.
Ikr. Super recording friendly, not too bright and not too dark, look beautiful and sound gorgeous
Excelente vídeo !
Nunca vi nenhum comparativo tão completo !!!!
Parabéns !!!
These videos are incredible, thanks so much!
In my opinion i think having the classic custom dual crash , the 15 inch dry hi hat , the byzance extta thin hammered crushed ride and thr fx cymbals of your choice is the most versatile choice so you can play most genres
great work. Best wishes from germany !i
Thank you for this really nice and interesting comparison. It helped me a lot!
Y’all’s intro is same drum riff from Burn Halo - Dirty Little Girl. Gets me every time!
Glad it was helpful and thanks for the kind words!
I had a similar revelation... Thinking the 22" jazz light ride would make an awesome crash ride... maybe with some sizzle to it 🤔
Byzance traditional are amazing
I live in a city where every single music store has closed but one Piano store that sells you guessed it pianos. So these demos and others are critical for me to decide on gear.
So glad they are helpful!
Man, they al sound great! Especially when they are hit hard with the bass drum accent underneath them.
My god is that snare drum ever a beast, love it
Meinl and Zildjian are the best Ever! Domene cymbals also really good!
Man generally Sabian resonates with me the most but I gotta say, those Pure Alloy and Classics Custom Dark sound so badass. So much energy in them.
As a Sabian user for many years, once you go Meinl, you never go back.
Bonsoir
Savez-vous quel alliage est utilisé pour fabriquer la série pure alloy ?
De Belgique
Max 😊
I would have to mix n’ match to find my setup suitable to my ears. Thanks for the vid.
How do you get so little snare in the snare sound. Micing and rimshots?
Love the video BTW. I have the Sand-line myself.
Mic positioning mostly. We don't use a snare bottom mic and the two top snare mics are positioned so that they capture the drum sound and not a bunch of wire buzz.
@@drumcenternh, nice to know. Thanks. That os also why the room sound in your drum videos is such an important thing!
11:31 for any parent out there, I’m hearing the Hey Bear music in the background 😂😂😂
I was very pleasantly surprised by the Pure Alloy.
Them extra dry crashes are awesome.
Came here for the cymbals, stayed for the classic maple toms.
