  • Part Three of my three-part personal tribute to classically-trained musicians who use their talents and instruments to rock our world. "Vitamin String Quartet is about applying rock n' roll attitude to classical technique," says Tom Tally, one of their violinists and arrangers. Their discography includes 261 albums, and I have the pleasure of covering one of my favorite songs to drum, VSQ-style.
    While I only highlighted three bands or ensembles here, there are many other classically-trained musicians who use their talents to play great rock. I salute them all for their contributions to a genre that Is growing in popularity.

    I just stumbled across your channel and, wow. You are an excellent drummer and Neil is very difficult to keep up with but you absolutely nailed it. Great job! :)

    Wow! Super impressive! Your sense of timing is impeccable, especially with those fills, which are difficult. Great job!

      Thank you. Coming from a multi-instrumentalist and future rock star, your observation is very much appreciated. ^_^

      +Devikah I'm too old to be a future rock star...lol But, you definitly have a bright future. Keep up the great work! :-)

      Thank you; will do. I gotta admit, though, that I have no aspiration to be a "star". As a session drummer, giving the band or ensemble reason to feel good about my contribution is what really matters. The session drummer lives to make other musicians happy. ^_^

    What's your favorite band / drummer to cover? Have you tried doing Travis barkers' drum cover to the rap / R&B songs he does at his concerts? Really cool.

    The fact that you use Aquarian heads made my day! Can you cover Revolve by the Melvins next? One of my favorite songs on the drums.

    • @Devikah
      @Devikah  9 років тому +1

      Hi, Austin. I'm glad you noticed. I tried the other two major brands and ended up with Aquarian heads for all of my toms, snare and kick. I absolutely LOVE them. I'll be happy to give your suggestion a look too. Thanks for your comment, Austin. I appreciate it. :)

      P.S. I just checked out that song. I can see why you like the drumming in it. Very cool. I have an itinerary of songs lined up already, but... it's short enough to maybe squeeze in between a couple of scheduled covers. Good taste, Austin. Thanks for the tip. :)

    • @zirconencrustedtweezers
      @zirconencrustedtweezers 9 років тому +1

      Aye, no problem. I chose a Melvins song because their drummer too uses Aquarians!

    Great idea with the tribute to classically trained rockers. So much fun. Vitamin is fun. Don't know if you've tried drumming something with Scala and Kolacny, but I think that could be fun too.

    • @Devikah

      Thank you for appreciating that. I will give them my consideration. ^_^

      I took a moment to look them up. Impressive choral group. But can you think of a song of theirs that has a challenging drumming part? ^_^

    • @jboy1258
      @jboy1258 7 років тому +1

      Devikah After I wrote that comment I decided to look at their page too cuz I was worried they didn't have anything challenging enough drum-wise. I know they did Everlong, but you've already done that. I also noticed that they often slow down their songs a lot too, so it might be really difficult to find something good. But I'll look more when I get the chance. 😆

      A violin version of Rush still is challenging, drumming-wise. I also love cello rock. Apocalyptica, for instance, can really rock. ^_^

    • @jboy1258
      @jboy1258 7 років тому +1

      Yes Apocalyptica! I totally forgot about them until I saw your Enter Sandman. There's just something about a cello. So hauntingly beautiful.

    • @Devikah

      Can I tell you a secret? Promise not to tell anyone? I'm not impressed with drummers who totally surround themselves with an ocean of drums and cymbals. I'm more impressed with drummers who can do more with less. It's just a preference of mine, that's all. Thanks for the suggestion. ^_^

    • @Devikah
      @Devikah  7 років тому +1

      The only videos that I've seen of Peart playing behind a less-than-humongous drum set are old ones where he jazzes it up and does Buddy Rich. Everything after that, his signature drum set is a sea of drums and cymbals. Including YYZ. ^_^

    • @TheMuffinator
      @TheMuffinator 7 років тому +1

      I think it's impressive if they are able to use them all well. Many drummers will have a ton of drums surrounding them but half of them never get touched. Peart does a great job using them all to fit his sound.

    I love Rush and Neil Peart. How about Porcupine Tree? Pay some homage to the great Gavin Harrison please if you have time. Love your drumming.

    Drumming to a Rush song by a string quartet. You aren't afraid to think out of the box. So many drummers just try and copy Neil Peart but you have your own take while still keeping the basic feel. That Russian I see you conversing in under this song? If so that is impressive also.

      It's not at the moment. I found that Rush is an acquired taste. Some people do and some don't. It's not my fav flavor now, but things change. ^_^

      Agreed. Do Overture, at least. One of the examples of why Neil is a top tier drummer. Saw him live last summer and the tour prior and he killed it at songs like Xanadu, The Anarchist (one of my favorite drumming songs from him and my favorite to play on bass), and Overture.

    Every time that I drum to this song, I feel the need to pay a little homage to its original master drummer: ua-cam.com/video/O4Q6Z8-xt9g/v-deo.html .

      więcej Rusha obejmuje na perkusję ?

      Witam, Thomas. Dziękujemy za twój komentarz. Mam listę piosenek, które należy wykonać przed patrząc na nowe. Jak tylko skończę wszystkie piosenki na tej liście, będę szczęśliwy, aby przyjrzeć się raz jeszcze w niektórych Rush piosenek. W tej chwili jestem bardzo zainteresowani w dawaniu moją uwagę do niektórych utalentowanych muzyków, którzy jeszcze nie stały się bardzo popularne jeszcze. Będą gwiazdy jutra, w mojej opinii. Jeszcze raz dziękuję, Thomas, za twój komentarz. :)
