They scream, they need attention, they are very messy, the need to be tamed, not good for first time owners.

It all depends, friend. If you buy a baby from a professional breeder, you will spend a large amount. If you rescue a parrot, it may not come as a tiny baby or be instantly cuddly, but you will save a LOT of money (I adopted my greenwing macaw for 800 dollars...they're a lot more from a breeder, and you usually get a cage too!) Any parrot is tameable and trainable, and there's tons of free information out there on how to build an amazing bond with your bird. If you work with that bi

@kwaziibabii I have two and they stay outside..no one has ever tried to take them....but my female will attack if a stranger goes in there. They scream so so loud...I think you should wait till you get your own house before trying to own one these birds...get a parrotlet, they're really cute and can talk if you spend enough time with them

I agree. We own a blue&gold, she means the world to us. She recently got eggbound after a mean heat cycle and the vet bill was about 3k. Folks asked me why I would pay that much to help a pet. I reply, she isn't a pet, she's a part of our family. I can always make more money, I can always buy more stuff, I can't buy another Nefertiti.

@yutaja You are lucky, if they only cost $600-$1000.
Where I live, it's around $2500 - $3000 USD in petshops, which is just too much for my budget.
At $1000, I could still afford one, a vet budget, and a nice, big cage. Too bad, I'll just pick a species I can afford in cash. My ''love fund'', on the other hand, dosen't have a limit. ^^

I have always wanted a bird but I haven't had alot of experience with them so the idea of loseing a finger isn't too appealing. Love them though. I was going to ask I know an african Gray has the equivalent mentality and understanding of a 5 y/o. do you think the macaw understands what she is saying or just repeating?

Do they ever bite, they look like they have a nice powerful bite and i want to get one, mind you, i have a Alligator snapping turtle, that never bit a fly LOL, so im not scared im just wondering if they're aggresive naturally, ty :)

@ppsthlm wow..... that was a lot of typing to read only to find there was no answer to the question asked!. I thought for sure at the end it would say "You're probably looking at around $....." NOT a lecture on something completely different. "What do I need to prepare for a Macaw? Do you have other bird suggestions? Are they high maintenance?" You answered all of those questions, thank you. Some people are cautious about being ripped off no matter how rich they are. wuta jerk

@KraftyKayla lol thanks, I would never get a giant bird like this and I'm well aware they can cost anywhere 1k-2.5k cages along are several hundred..... It just irritates me when someone asks a simple question and they don't get answered but get lectured? he sounds like an ass.

A Macaw is expensive to buy - and it really should be. It´s even more expensive to buy all the equipment needed for keeping a parrot. Avieries and stands and ropes and good food - not to speak about an extra room for it.
Buying a Macaw should never be done on a budget. If you can´t afford it or if you don´t have the time she needs from you in order to keep her feel loved it is probably better to buy a couple of budgies - or just don´t buy anything...

    True.
She actually has a much bigger one now. This is the smaller cage I would ever use for a Macaw - they really do need space. When we lived in this apartment she had this as her outdoor aviery and a whole room inside for only her as well. And then the rest of the house when we were at home as well of course... The do need space and cannot be locked away in a small cage, they need to move around...

Parrots grow very quickly. She was pretty big even at 3 months, almost full size. Much so so that they quickly can leave the nest. The beak and the eyes is where you can really tell if it is an adult or not - the beak just keeps on growing, much like a thick fingernail. (She trims it down a little herself though.)

    lol
Well, she doesn´t actually speak english. She only speaks swedish and italian:) So I´m you heard her say "Hej Clara" (Clara is her name) or "hohoo" (which another sort of "hey") or "Ciao" - again Hello....
That said I´m sure she thinks I´m a parrot:)
Or even more so I´m sure she thinks she´s a human being:)

If she had the intention to bite my finger off she actually could, she´s really strong. But the truth is she´s totally lovable and not at all aggressive. It might look like she´s "biting" me, but in actual fact she´s "tasting" me. She puts everything she´s curious about in her mouth to taste what it is, much like a dog would sniff for the same reason...
