Great job, I saw one in 76 when the tub I was on stationed at NAS Alamada sent a work detail on USS Oriskany which was being decommissioned on gather detail, it was found in a hold at the fantail. That one was all gray, with a red lens for night out . Once again great job
That is BEAUTIFUL!!! What a detailed job of restoring and painstaking care being careful with some of the fragile pieces ..... and it all works !!!! Super!!!!
My biggest surprise is that after the drilling and polishing with all its inevitable vibrations the compass still works? However it seems to be fine so thumbs up for the renovation!
This is the first time I have seen a binnacle compass before, and the restoration job is awesome. It looks much better than before and it works like a charm too. Excellent work as usual. One more thing. That case looks like it is made of copper and brass. It will keep its shine longer if you put one or two thin coats of clear lacquer on it.
Can tell this is the first time you've seen a binnacle compass, because, he completely fckd this thing up by removing the original paint. Especially on the interior.
Damnnnn❤❤❤❤ this was a perfect restoration in my opinion , love how this was in war and now it's all proud and shiny and back to its glory before it had to be painted to hide in the night love this
LIONEL the company famous fo electric trains made this. they made many things for the navy. a tour guide on the BATTLESHIP NEW JERSEY pointed this out on some peices on the ship
I ordered the right screws when I was working on the project the wrong ones showed up. Still waiting…lol I’ll make a short topping off the compass and installing the proper screw. Thanks for watching
Beautiful work on the case. The compass would have been better if you spent some time on it, beyond polishing. Perhaps you could have drained it and serviced the card and pivot, then refilled it with ETOH, without bubbles. Good job, quit too soon.
The compass is not leveling properly. Needs adjustments. Also, the wick in the oil lamp is way too far out. Adjust the wick down until you have a clean burn. Other than that, not bad at all.
You had to be careful using those in a life boat at night if there were German U-boats in the vicinity. That lantern could be seen for miles on a dark night. Sailors couldn't even light a cigarette on deck aboard ship.

Thank you so much for watching. A red lense would be amazing. I worked night ops on CVN 75 so I’m very familiar.
A beautiful job on the binnacle however the compass needed some work such as purging the air from the liquid. All round a good job.
Thank you so much for watching

Interesting piece. I always wondered what sailors did at night for navigation when clouds obscured the stars.
Thank you so much for watching

A Phillips screw in the hole you drilled and tapped? All the other screws are slotted. Looks funny.
