After the big tornado of 2011 , here in Alabama, I know what people are made of. Coming together. Helping each other in any way they need. It's heartwarming and heartening.

Thanks for the word on the TriCity area. I live in WNC about a mile from the border, as the crow flies, so I was above the flooding and somewhat protected from the worst of the winds by the ridges (only lost 6 trees with no other damage other than to a fence). The short story is I am planning on moving to Johnson City area sometime next year. So, maybe I’ll run into you in Bristol before long.

We were there from Oct. 3 to 13 and stayed in Elizabethton. The Sycamore Shoals Road creek/river along the road remained brown, but didn’t harm anything there where our cabin was (Meredith Valley). The settlers village area (can’t remember what it’s called) wasn’t harmed, and I thought it would be. The gift shop was closed though. One bridge was detoured in Elizabethton only. Some of the hiking trails were closed. Laurel Falls was clear, Blue Hole closed (impassable with giant trees on the path) High Bluff was gated, but they started working to clear the road from Carvers Gap on the day we were there. We hiked the Carvers Gap area and it was lovely! Oscaeola Island was closed with a tree on the bridge, but the river was clear and gorgeous. The Watauga lake was beautiful. Rogersville had a fantastic day for their Heritage Day, and I Could not believe how many people were there. Every single person who owned a truck was carrying something. Debris or supplies. Going towards the hurting areas or carrying it out. EVERY SINGLE TRUCK. No one was rude, no one was acting crazy. People were just helping each other with love. We donated a ton of things we bought at Walmart and gave it to a friend who lives there to take where he thought was best. We actually had the best time ever and it’s our third time in the Tri Cities and it’s because of the heart warming acts of kindness we witnessed from an area we’d like to retire to in a couple years.

WAIT, EDIT!!! Blue Hole Falls WAS open and cleared. It was Coon Den Falls that was covered in trees. We climbed over many, but then realized we were crazy.

20 inches of rain on the mts which cover a few 1000 square miles, running off the Mt into a creek or river which only has an area of a few 1000 acres is called a flood, someone do the math, square miles into square feet, plus rain, slope, speed, I'm not a math guy

I saw an article a couple of days ago that stated this: "More than 40 trillion gallons of rain drenched the Southeast United States in the last week from Hurricane Helene and a run-of-the-mill rainstorm that sloshed in ahead of it - an unheard of amount of water that has stunned experts.
That’s enough to fill the Dallas Cowboys’ stadium 51,000 times, or Lake Tahoe just once. If it was concentrated just on the state of North Carolina that much water would be 3.5 feet deep (more than 1 meter). It’s enough to fill more than 60 million Olympic-size swimming pools.
“That’s an astronomical amount of precipitation,” said Ed Clark, head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Water Center in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. “I have not seen something in my 25 years of working at the weather service that is this geographically large of an extent and the sheer volume of water that fell from the sky.”

@@TNVAHomeTeam I heard that at the lake Fontana dam they lower the level between September and November to get ready for rain and winter storms. They made out a lot better in this.

@@reapthewhirlwind4166 Same with South Holston & Watauga Lakes in our area. I can appreciate the need to lower them much more.

@@TNVAHomeTeam I have only experienced a flash flood situation once. It was in Mount airy we went into town one evening to shop. The rains came down so heavy. Low-lying areas already flooded by the time we came out from the mall. We kept having to detour and finally went out through a rural area. Fields were also flooding. It happened so fast and it's scary

The flood of 1916 was very similar. But they were hit by two hurricane systems back then.

Please speak truth of deaths. There are way more than 93 deaths in NC. 10,000 body bags were given out with calls for more needed. Im not saying there were 10K deaths. Each body part found needs a body bag.

My Daddy told me two things (at least):
    1) Don’t mess with Leroy Brown
    2) Don’t live in a floor plane either 100 year or even 500 year
    I have done neither 🤡

@@StElmosFire53 a year ago or so I found 9.0 acres, north facing slope, on Lovers Lane near Townsend TN, the seller was asking $450k; it had an old waterlogged house, a tiny house, and a camper; I offered $35k (too much but I liked the spot, and I knew my offer would be rejected); the agent called me and asked if I meant to offer $350k; I explained how $35k was 3x the actual value, she said but it's right next to the Smokey Mountains, who needs mountains when you have 9.5 acres of not plowable north facing slope? the price was soon dropped to $350k; I have info if it ever sold...
this demonstrates that agents are seeking wealthy ignorant foreign buyers...
