Could you do another with some bait? Maybe not dog poop but something else that would attract some more bugs, maybe some beetles?

Good stuff! I started an insect collection for a summer a long time ago, maybe I should revive it 🤔🤔🤔

Cool, this kinda looks like my job :D I'm doing biodiversity monitoring on Carabidae and Arachnida in Silphium perfoliatum monocultures and we use traps almost like that in rows of 5. Will see if I can send you some pics on twitter or IG. Nice idea for everybody to try out, thanks for sharing! :)

Carabidae was one of the other focal groups when I was trapping for my M.S.!

I love Carabidae, I find this is the best type of trap for attracting them, especially if you add some meat as bait

How long did your master's program take?

Many biology M.S. programs are 2 years (with 1 summer in between), but because I was studying ecology I spent 3 years in the program (with 2 summers) so that I could collect more data. Luckily, I was able to get some sort of funding for all 3 years, and it was a great experience!

    but why kill them?

Great question! Biologists collect specimens to put in museum collections to create a historical record of species -- we can use specimens of the same species from different time periods to see changes in those species! There are also many species of insects and other invertebrates that can't be identified without the help of a microscope, and they won't exactly sit still while they're alive.
