Sword Interval is one of the few webcomics that I made sure to catch every week. Ben is a serious talent, and you should read the whole series, and also check out his previous comic, Derelict.
Is it just me or have comic titles really been getting weird as of late? This sounds like an era of Power Rangers, not a comic book. The Sword Interval Flashback Arc Era.
Tbf people just call it that he doesnt actually name it in the title of the comics Also he explains the title in a monologue by the villain at around halfway through the series. A really good monologue i might add.
The messiness and instability of comics from dc and marvel, mainly the feeling of a lack of a coherent story, is why manga has become more popular then western comics
It feels weird watching Linkara review a comic that I have independently read through. It’s like finding out your teacher is old friends with you parents. It’s a small world.
The amount of fan comics and AO3 fics I've read about Marvel and DC properties is beginning to overshadow the amount of comics I've read from the companies themselves.
@@tigamaki1345 Its the whole 90% issue. 90% of anything is crap. With fanfiction they publish something like a hundred stories for every issue of a comic so for every issue there are about 10 stories that are good. Meanwhile the big 2 have to wade through the piles of crap that get submitted to them and pick the good ones. And right now the publishers are thinking 'good' means something stupid.
Lewis, I have to say, your writing as a whole has stepped up in leaps and bounds, but in the last few years your mini-speeches on stuff like audience entitlement, creators and the comics they make (I'm a BIG fan of the one you did in the Cassandra Cain-trospective where you gave Adam Beechen praise for trying to fix his own mistakes, still a personal fave as a writer), issues that entertainment brings up... they've been amazing. Kudos. Oh, also your jokes. I especially like the Ratchetron and Anton Miller - 45th President - list ones, they actually had me have to stop the video and go back from laughing too much.
Even some Chicago dude who lost his glasses has knocked off at least half of the “stuff he’d never review” as his Nasty Crisis character in the decade since he made the video (back when he was apparently T-1 year from ending the show)

Unrelated note: I never noticed that skull with the artist's mark on Robin's cape on Robin 150 until now. And it was part of a review I did a couple years ago!
I liked Lightbringer...I even had a couple webcomics of my own back in the day, I would NEVER judge someone for not doing their passion project with professional polish. For the record, I'm a guy who got his youtube popularity making toys for people, a glorified hobbyist.
People who crap on Lewis over Lightbringer act as if they both never did anything embarrassing in their lives, and that people can't change over time. Sometimes I feel that the internet was a mistake.

When I first heard you were going to review a webcomic I was hoping it would be Lavender Jack, bercouse it's a great superhero/pulphero story that takesthe best elements from different superhero andpulp hero stories like Batman, The Shadow, the Phantom that kind of thing. Also I'm very happy you defied to check out more of it you definitely won't be disappointed and hope from one patreon you to do a review of lavender Jack or you decide to check out yourself. Also if there's a cartoon remake or they decided to do a little promo video I hope the Creator contacts you because UA-cam very good job on voicing hierophant.

If you think reading comics on your phone is weird, try reading them on a 3DS. Yeah, that’s a thing I would do with manga back in 2011 before I got a smartphone years later.
Honestly, I actually don't think that would be such a bad idea if someone had made an app specifically for it - put it on it's side, and use the touch screen to flip the pages. Granted, you could make the argument that you'd be better off just buying an tablet if you were only going to use the 3DS to read books that way, but still.
Huh, I never thought about why web comics are laid out that way but it makes sense when you use more phones than I do. I am also the kind of person who used his phone pretty much exclusively for calling and maybe texting for the majority of time that I had one.

Interesting world, reminds me a bit of Shadowrun but without the cyberpunk part and a little more low key. Of course, any runner know that you should never deal with a dragon, it never ends well for you. You should probably stay away from things that look like the grim reaper too so that Goth girl is in it deep.
I still want him to review The Order of the Stick, simply because that's my favorite webcomic, and I've never seen anyone talk about it. I even have a way to get around the whole "won't review webcomics unless the creator has made money off of them" thing. Don't review the main comic itself. Instead, review the prequel comic "On the Origin of PCs." It consists entirely of material that must be purchased in order to be viewed; it gives a better introduction to the story than the actual start of the story (since the webcomic itself doesn't really have an introduction; it just kinda starts); and, while it does contain references to the main story (as does the main story to it), it can absolutely be read and enjoyed with no prior knowledge of the rest of the webcomic. As an aside, for people who think the writer of OOTS, Rich Burlew, is being greedy for "locking vital story details behind a paywall", any time the comic does make reference to something that happened in both prequel comics ("On the Origin of PCs" and "Start of Darkness), it is always fully explained for the people who can't or won't pay for it (since the comic frequently breaks the fourth wall).
Manga was already kicking him in his potatoes. "Won't look very good!" Tell it to Tite Kubo's freaking panel layouts and how dynamic they are at conveying movement. "Life savings vacuum" The list goes on really. But the internet definitely brought more walls down for millions of talented artists and writers the world over.
@@LupineShadowOmega biggest problem with Marvile is how pretentious it was. There are a lot of failed comedy comics out there (intentional comedies anyway) but Marvile went off the deep end fast than Anakin in Revenge of the Sith. The belittling, hollier than thou, "I have the bigger dick in this equation" attitude definitely didn't help.
For the record I thought Lightbringer had potential and it's too bad you didn't continue it since this show has shown how you've grown as a storyteller, not to mention Alone In The Dark and the AT4W movie. I'm also sorry we didn't get more Revolution Of The Mask as I thought the first two issues were pretty good. Even reviewed them.
Baseball bats autographed by one of the players count as legendary weapons? Welp, next time I go on a magical quest I’ll make sure to bring a baseball bat signed by one of the Seattle Mariners.
Not just autographed technically, it's obvious that the bat was from someone that was a big deal Baseball Star (why else build the thing its own glass case) and I kind of love the idea that legendary isn't about the power it has, but rather the notoriety of its/its wielder's deeds. That is fun. Like it makes me wonder if other famous objects can just kill a dragon dead.
Little note for Viga, I kinda miss the Thing on some of your time cards Linkara (the little green guy with 3 red eyes and white hair). Think we’ll still get a few title cards where he makes an appearance? No pressure for the record. Title cards are still great.
Solo Leveling was able to get itself reformatted for a physical print recently. There are many more now that are paywalled too, so it's no longer just a labor of love. It has become a new market.

Here’s some other webcomics I’d recommend making reviews and retrospectives on, some I think you’re familiar with: 1. Dumbing of Age 2. Questionable Content 3. El Goonish Shive 4. Between Failures
So since Linkara cameoed in Scott the Woz's 200th episode, can I just ask where the F@$K he was during that?!? A bright blue border overtook Ohio and the earth! People were mildly annoyed for MINUTES while he did nothing!!! We had to rely on a different UA-camr with access to a spaceship only he made it himself instead of stealing it! Point is, Scott Wozniak should be in the contest of champions, not Linkara! Fite me!!!
Eh, I'm sure it could be explored in a tie-in. Headcanon: Linkara tried the I-Am-A-Man Punch, which accidentally pulled the border closer, so not much he could do.
"If the Big Two are going to ignore the material that people actually want out of their books--" Surprised this didn't involve an image of a married Spider-Man given EVERY SINGLE ONE of the spider-man fans just want peter parker to be married again Ironically they let Ben Grimm marry Alicia Masters and adopt a skrull girl and a kree boy as their adoptive children yet they don't let peter marry. then again how Nick Spencer is handling Peter is 100 times better than how Dan slott is handling Franklin Richards and Johnny Storm
Eh, give it some (I meant that in both ways: 1. Spiderman's One More Day retcon is decimated and he gets his wife AND his little girl, Mayday Parker. 2. Ben's family succumbs to a Cry for Justice "finale"... you know the one!)
@@battlion507 well considering what dan slott is doing with alicia (she using the puppet master's clay to force her father to give ben his blessing for the wedding AND also force Lyja to leave them alone), i wouldn'tbe surprised if it nds with ben as single father and he divorcing alicia or them ending on bad terms

Honestly, I always thought that was more the fault of the more toxic OneyPlays fans. Because they were either self-righteous with the whole “he shouldn’t criticize” nonsense, or they just kept trying to pull him into a joke that he didn’t find funny, and insulted him because he “couldn’t take it”
Every time there's a Patreon review I get the urge to buy one of those slots for something like Power of the Dark Crystal, but then I remember that they sell out super quickly, and then I remember that I don't have money for that.
For me its Parasyte the Maxim, I really want to get Linkara's take on John Carpenter's The Thing as seen through a different culture and even playing with the idea of The Thing eating people. It lines up way too well with things that he has brought up in the past. But likewise I don't have money.
Wow I kind of forgot that Parallel Dementia had a successor, this looks pretty damn good as well, though it is a shame anything past page 357 seems gone forever, for Parallel Dementia I mean.
Ok, I had to pause so I could say how much I love the big with the dragon. It’s Smaug on Wall Street! That is so hilarious I’m amazed no one else has come up with such a gag before. Kudos to the writer.
For as bad as Lightbringer was it deserves a little credit because lets be honest all great creators have to start somewhere. Really the jump from Lightbringer to now is a show case of your strengths as a writer Lewis the way you always strife to improve and perfect your craft sticking to what works and fixing what didn't until eventually we got bangers like The Sleepwalker Storyline keep up the great work.
3:35 Plus the big two have been getting pretty hostile towards criticism in recent years, probably because of the movies is my theory. Dc has been doing it subtly like you noted in infinite crisis with Geoff johns and Superboy prime, but Marvel has been blatantly horrible about criticism. The editors were straight up telling people to go away if they didn't like what they were doing with the books and Dan Slott was getting away with spending half of his run as head Spider-man writer skulking around and fighting with half the internet and random tweeters for even the smallest negative comment towards his books.
I seem to be alone here, but I genuinely liked Lightbringer. The Art wasn’t great (though still. Better than anything I’ve ever drawn), but it had a lot of heart. You clearly loved the medium and were trying to do some thoughtful stories and original ideas. I’m pretty forgiving of things that display those attributes.
7:30 - Oh good, I thought I was the only one who preferred to still use an MP3 Player (or in my case, an iPod Nano) over their phone. For me personally, it's because phones are made way too big now to just comfortable sit in my pockets _(shakes fists at designers who make womens' pockets)_ or hold in my hands while I just vibe with my music.
PSA hell and a webcomic to read should Linkara go on break. Two relatively short episodes after a long, stressful multi-parter. You see, when they try to use a critic's earlier work as a "gotcha", they fail to realize that there's a keyword people new to the business should take note of: commitment. There was the passion, but Babpykara wasn't ready to commit to a fulltime career path yet. There was still school, he was really into MS3TK, and the Big Two were about to have the worst time of a CEO's life.
I feel you on the cell phone thing, although I've become accustomed to using its various capabilities. One big issue issue is memory: both in the sense that one could well argue that there's something far more wholesome about seeing something wonderful and just watching it, rather than scrambling to get a pixelated shot or video of it*, and in the sense that there's limited space on a phone's memory card. *That said, having that kind of camera handy during a bad situation can certainly be useful if it can be used for legal purposes.
Hmm, I think I have a legendary weapon myself, I have a piggy bank of Sonic the Hedgehog that was made in 1994, when the SATAM cartoon was still on the air signed by Jaleel White (Sonic's original voice actor.) Could I use that thing to beat a dragon to death? Or maybe since it's a effigy of a hero maybe it'll imbue me with his powers? I'm gonna check out this comic to see if that's how it works...

When I was a kid whenever I run out patience to screw those screwy screws I would just Hammer those In 😅
I have Come a long way too but scews are just fancy nails 😄
@@Asahamana It's true 😆
1:53 Congrats Linkara, you’ve made me do something I haven’t done in years, spit out my drink through my nose. It hurts but I’m still laughing
yeah that's a prime choice for a out of context clip
*LOOK, SCREWDRIVERS ARE REALLY HARD TO USE, OKAY?!?!?!*
Sword Interval is one of the few webcomics that I made sure to catch every week. Ben is a serious talent, and you should read the whole series, and also check out his previous comic, Derelict.
1:50 Is no one else gonna tell him? No, I gotta...okay. Hey, Linkara, you're holding that screwdriver upside down.
Is it just me or have comic titles really been getting weird as of late? This sounds like an era of Power Rangers, not a comic book. The Sword Interval Flashback Arc Era.
Tbf people just call it that he doesnt actually name it in the title of the comics
Also he explains the title in a monologue by the villain at around halfway through the series.
TBF the fanfic often seems to understand or appreciate the characters more than the actually issues...
Even some Chicago dude who lost his glasses has knocked off at least half of the “stuff he’d never review” as his Nasty Crisis character in the decade since he made the video (back when he was apparently T-1 year from ending the show)
3:26 "If the Big Two are going to ignore the material that people actually *want* out of their books--"

This may not've been intended, but I think this is what is considered "a mood".
Unrelated note: I never noticed that skull with the artist's mark on Robin's cape on Robin 150 until now. And it was part of a review I did a couple years ago!
[Juxtaposed with image of the good versions of Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown]
Whaaaaat I don't know what you're talking about. =)
@@AT4W Oh, well then, "my mistake."
*[wink]* OW!
I knowingly winked so hard I pulled a muscle! That old fortune-teller woman was right!
I liked Lightbringer...I even had a couple webcomics of my own back in the day, I would NEVER judge someone for not doing their passion project with professional polish. For the record, I'm a guy who got his youtube popularity making toys for people, a glorified hobbyist.
A lot of great manga started out in life as web comics. One Punch Man is a great example as is Pop Team Epic.
Dude you were holding the screwdriver upside down....
Idiot. It was a left-handed one!
I think that was part of the joke.
People who crap on Lewis over Lightbringer act as if they both never did anything embarrassing in their lives, and that people can't change over time.
Sometimes I feel that the internet was a mistake.
Gods, now I'm waiting for someone to request Schlock Mercenary(He's talked about it before, it's finished now, and I think he could have fun with an arc/piece of an arc from it)
Personally, I started with the LOTA arc, it being brought up so much on tvtropes. I probably wouldn't recommend starting from from panel set 1.
The Civil War arc would be my suggestion. Or Big Dumb Objects. Or - look, pretty much any.
It's finished?! Why did you have to tell me that? That was my only justification for not going back and re-binge-reading it!
5:50 As a Stargate fan this joke made me super happy.
When I first heard you were going to review a webcomic I was hoping it would be Lavender Jack, bercouse it's a great superhero/pulphero story that takesthe best elements from different superhero andpulp hero stories like Batman, The Shadow, the Phantom that kind of thing. But Sword Interval is also very good and one of the few webcomic I believe would do well with a cartoon adaptation.
This series seems truly creative and entertaining. I'm glad you covered some of it. I probably wouldn't have heard of it otherwise.
Happy Memorial Day Lewis!

Not so happy for my family.

@@Pikachu2Ash Maybe. But it didn't help that my sister watched one of her parakeets die after the vet wasn't available. It wasn't quick either.
@@gasmonkey1000 Sorry to hear about that but why being down the whole idea or day itself because something unrelated to the day negatively happened?
Was it me or did I think this was a storyline compilation? Anyways good episode
I used to read so much Wikipedia on my 3DS.
Same... such memories...
I used to read Homestuck using my Wii's browser...honestly the better way to read all those fuckin chatlogs, the text was way too tiny otherwise
At this point that top 15 list is just a checklist.
Huh, I never thought about why web comics are laid out that way but it makes sense when you use more phones than I do.
I am also the kind of person who used his phone pretty much exclusively for calling and maybe texting for the majority of time that I had one.
Ah memories of your top 15 things you will never review episode i remember that video it was tons of fun good times. :)
Ironically, he only calls attention to it when he breaks how he won't review the things on the list.

holy crap you aknowledged the lightbringer! good for you to stand againt the annoyance that it must be.
Also you should definetly take control back from them by making it part of the AT4W lore in some fashion
Ah Sword Interval. For me, this is the webtoon that got me into webtoons. If it weren't for this webtoon, I never would've discovered series like Code Adam, Down to Earth, Rebirth, Omniscient Reader, Jungle Juice, City of Blank, Surviving Romance, Lumine, Etc. As such, this webtoon will forever have a special place in my heart.
7:27 I still don't use my phone for music but I barely used my mp3 players and walkmans to begin with. I did eventually start playing mobile games. Have managed to never spend a single cent on them.
I never spent a cent on Facebook games when those were a thing either so...
Interesting world, reminds me a bit of Shadowrun but without the cyberpunk part and a little more low key.
Of course, any runner know that you should never deal with a dragon, it never ends well for you. You should probably stay away from things that look like the grim reaper too so that Goth girl is in it deep.
I love the ACE Mcshane reference! That episode of classic! doctor who is awesome!
Patreon; yet another reason Bill Jemas was wrong and Marvile sucks on potatoes. Self publishing isn't an issue anymore.
@@lorddrayvon1426 Agreed.
Thing Tucker MOSTLY only showed up for Halloween cards.
He will return for Halloween cards. =)

It’s okay Linkara. We all struggle with screwdrivers. Though the one you hold in the opening looks to be inside-out.
Yellow eyes. A creature known as the Hierophant. The company in universe is called Atlas. Is this whole series secretly one big Persona reference?
Yeah. That was around the time P4 was on PS2...
I love the Linkara storyline and all the characters you portray. Keep stroking the ego, please.
I like the artstyle the art can be flat at times. But it's pretty solid. For a Webcomic this seems really good. And the bat part was hilarious.

Fite me!!!
Look, I was too confused why I was suddenly in Ohio to do anything about that and it all worked out anyway!
Eh, I'm sure it could be explored in a tie-in.
Headcanon: Linkara tried the I-Am-A-Man Punch, which accidentally pulled the border closer, so not much he could do.
Instant thumbs up every time Lewis mentions Goa'uld or anything Stargate related.

Surprised this didn't involve an image of a married Spider-Man given EVERY SINGLE ONE of the spider-man fans just want peter parker to be married again
Ironically they let Ben Grimm marry Alicia Masters and adopt a skrull girl and a kree boy as their adoptive children yet they don't let peter marry.
then again how Nick Spencer is handling Peter is 100 times better than how Dan slott is handling Franklin Richards and Johnny Storm
Eh, give it some (I meant that in both ways:

@@Thomas.Wright Same way a saw connects with a rhino! Geez, did nobody take woodshop!?!
For as bad as Lightbringer was it deserves a little credit because lets be honest all great creators have to start somewhere. 3:35
Plus the big two have been getting pretty hostile towards criticism in recent years, probably because of the movies is my theory.
