Poking fun at the LUAS drivers threatening to go on strike in Dublin who are fighting for higher wages. So we go to The LUAS School to see what it takes to be a LUAS Driver.

Don't see why everyday people are slagging luas drivers and that for wanting more money when bankers are still getting rich out of our pockets and where half of are government are the reason for it and i would say all of them but yea gotta have some hope that things are going to get better i think instead of butting heads with each other we should pull together to get better jobs more money and take away from the people who tuck away people's homes and probably lead alot more people to pain and depression then anyone whos pissed off over luas drivers

I have to say I don't know why they are going on strike. As a bus driver the stress we have to put with regards to having to deal with the public no one would believe we don't know what is going to happen from one minute to the next. I wish some one would explain to me why they think their job is so difficult. They don't have to deal with Traffic, Public, Taxis pulling out or jamming on in front, they don't have to deal with assaults. Insults.

Driving a bus is definitely more difficult than Luas. Aren't bus drivers payed better?! In my country they earn a bit more than tram drivers, the problem being that both earn too little..

While I love this kind of clever comedy, I worry it feeds into the attitude around lately against Luas drivers which is, in my opinion, a bit imbalanced and unfair. I think the anti-luas driver sentiment smacks of elitism, with many of the arguments revolving around 'lack of qualifications' or it being an 'easy' job. (for 'thicks', as I heard it put once). As one of my friends put it, if your issue is with the unequal distribution of wealth in this country, aim your disdain a little higher than the dudes who drive the trams.

TDs have been paid €2M since being elected without having yet formed a government. Public sector workers cannot be fired. Cannot be fired. 18 BILLION was spent on "consultants" for Irish water, before it was even set up. A handful of individuals control 90% of this country's wealth (and media). The tram drivers are not the problem.

Joking aside in regards to how easy there jobs is, it is a very unrealistic rise in pay they are looking for and due to their greed and stubborness there is yet another strike today. I can understand why they would not have a large amount of public support.
+Clisare Would you cop yourself on? Firemen have much more involved jobs, risk their lives daily, and are not paid anything like what Luas drivers are paid. They don't have a maximum salary anywhere near the Luas drivers' 42k a year. They don't have healthcare provided. They don't get heavily discounted travel.

I don't know the rules, law's, policy of the luas in relationship to they act at stops. I see on a daily bases people being refused entry even though they are right there at the doors but the driver won't admit them, it's disgraceful and demeaning. I see the young the aged and mother's with kid's coming and going to school being refused for no justifiable reason . Sometime the tram stays at the stop for another minute after closing their doors but still they won't admit people. Daily this happens and it has to stop. 👊☘️
Then they f*ck up and hit a Dublin Bus somehow.
Would sack them all and close the luas for a few months. All the momey for wages during those months would be used to fully computerise the Luas. Driverless technology is the way forward
+BATTERIESc You see the thing is, if you were to do that, then why is there a need for humans to be involved in any public service? With driverless technology anything can go wrong.
Yes, human error is a thing, and a very unavoidable thing at times but if you have driverless LUAS systems what we could very well be left with is LUAS systems not stopping when needed. Human drivers can stop or at least slow down when there's someone in the way....how is a computer going to realize when there's someone right in front of it?
Fatalities could very well happen, but the only other issue is that you'll need security on the LUAS if it becomes driverless. People do get attacked on LUAS systems, and being near the driver is a good way of avoiding the unwanted attention of dodgy types (trust me, I have personal experience with this) since there's a human who can legitimately intervene.
Driverless technology is convenient, but we can't ignore the potential risks staring us in the face :/

+Pandora Sentire I agree with security measures for sure, but there must be some alternative to a defunct driver. Luas needs sensors on all sides to stop when needed. Most modern tech prob more safe that humans !

1) make the network run efficiently and on time, with no delays.
2) increase the amount of trains in service
+TheThaxs The problem is not the initial cost of the salaried workers, it's the long run cost. These drivers salary will increase to 64,000 in 10 years and then will increase steadily. The unions will fight for constant increases and there will be strikes if their conditions are not met. This will inevitably increase ticket prices and the costs of service will lead to less investment and cash to keep the system run efficiently. Same thing is happening in London
If we don't side with Luas drivers, we are siding with the big fellas and I'd rather not.

i make it my business to see exactly who's driving the luas each time I get on. none of them are Irish nationals and I have applied to be a luas driver dozens of times. That's the Ireland I grew up in. the iteland where u have to be black to get a job
