Ive never fished for barracuda but I would be afraid to grab it by its jaw as he does. Their teeth are something out of a trippy horror movie. Mangled, misshapen pointing in any direction they want. Not as lethal as shark teeth but just look way way more intimidating.

I'm surprised to hear that barracuda numbers are down in your area. No one that I know eats or targets them here in the Gulf. As far as spear fishermen, who wants to be tethered to a thirty pound pack of razor blades! Most wrecks here are covered with them.
We went to Long Beach they have barracuda there my dad gave me my first fish bait I to led him it was lucky and I would catch a big sucker my words exact
I got a big barracuda in my little dingy probably the same size as that first big one or bigger and the hook I was using bent and I couldn't get it all the way in the dingy but I did get like 18 barracuda that day
You honestly are the only fisher man outta the people you hang out with that isn't a googan . You are a reel guy . They all are googans u fish with in exeption of lunkers tv and this guy
Caught my first and only 47 inch 'cuda down in Key West on 10 lb braid, wire leader and what a fight. They are a blast to catch. Some folks like to call'em trash fish I beg to differ a sport fish also call jacks sport fish to. Jacks aren't trash fish. Blast to catch as well.
+BlacktipH If your going for GT's you gotta try get out to Hawaii and try the local method of slide baiting. You cast from shore and throw out a heavy line with a 12 foot pole. After you get a special clip and some leader and slide it down the line. It's a really unique experience and the best part is that you fish off a cliff in the middle of the night.

I'm thinking about getting a rod, but there's so many choices of different reels and rods that I have no idea where to start. Does anybody have an idea of what I should get? I live in Wisconsin if that gives any help.
+Not A Ricer if you want a rod to start you could get an ugly stick, they have very good warranty, but if you want a really nice rod get a St Croix, they are made right here in Wisconsin

You cannot crimp single strand wire. You must tie a haywire twist. It takes practice, I couldn't tie them very well when I first started learning.

I use that rig over here in Cali sometimes for thresher sharks and hammer heads on my off season and that special clip is called a snap swivel

worst part of live bait is when your bait gets away from the fish and the big fish gives up
I usually use a knife to make a small cut or cuts in the side of the fish. It slows the fish down and attracts more fish.
