On a business trip to London, I was out walking in SoHo one evening. I was told this was safe; however, a man started following me. Realizing he wasn't going away, I walked over to a couple near me and quietly asked them to pretend they knew me, and why, said my name. Which they immediately and enthusiastically did: hugged me, addressed me by my name. The guy took off. This is a safety technique I highly recommend when in sudden danger.

I did something similar. Walking alone, a man stumbled out of a pub & whistled at me. I asked a man ahead of me if the guy was whistling at me or him. Guy ahead of me slowed for a few moments, enough time to have the annoying guy get the hint.
Great idea! I did this once years ago with a friend to get away from someone in a bar and have been married to “my rescuer” over 30yrs now!
I am a 72 year old grandma and I always travel alone and have a great time!
Another tip I use for navigation, put an AirPod or other wireless earbud in only one ear and make sure your hair covers it - then get your directions going on Google maps, but put the phone up and just go by the audio from Google Maps - no one will know you’re using the navigation, you only have one ear plugged, and you are still 100% visually aware of everything going on around you and don’t have your head buried in your phone.
I was going to suggest this when getting into a cab or Uber as well. Make sure you have the destination preloaded into the phone. That way you can follow the line of travel the driver is taking to make sure he/she is going the way they should be, whether for safety or trying to overcharge you. Also, find out the emergency number for the country you're visiting, like the 911 number we use in the US. Emergency numbers are different outside the US.
At about 12:30, Laurie talks about being aware of your surroundings. I used to teach personal safety while in law enforcement. One thing I talked about is the traffic light system. The green light means you are going about your day but not paying attention to your surroundings. Yellow light means you are going about your day but aware of your surroundings. Has that car behind you been behind you for awhile? Making all the turns you are making? If you aren’t sure, hang a U turn. If the person behind you does the same thing DO NOT GO HOME! Instead drive to a police station or an open door and call the police. Try to get as much information about the car as possible. Same thing if you are in a store or out walking or running. Red light means something has caught your attention and you need to act. Strive to always be in yellow mode - enjoying your day but aware of your surroundings and who is near you.
Years back a woman came out of the grocery store, got in her car, and a guy started following her. Her was persistent. I now don’t remember where she was when she confronted him, but he had seen someone get in her backseat and apologized for scaring her but in fact was hoping she go to the police!

An additional tip: Be aware of group of thieves (2-3 people) walking around near you in a “friendly” manner, for example in an airport, they are very clever in pulling “tricks” to distract you… One time, upon landing in Madrid and leaving customs, I stopped for coffee and this person out of nowhere, pointed at the floor and asked me if the “piece of paper” on the floor was mine to distract me while another person took my purse, hid it in a shopping bag, and left with it calmly walking…When I panicked, the person was asking me “is everything OK?”, to give plenty of time for the person with my purse to escape… So unfortunately you got to be aware of “very nice people” trying to approach you….

Does anyone request a room on the first level close to the desk where they would hear a scream?
We booked the second floor and went to inspect it before moving our stuff in. On our way yo go back down, the elevator was stuck with someone in it ringing the bell. My 7 year old and I had to take the stairs down. This creeped her out. And me too. What if that were a trap?
Later there was an out of order sign on that elevator and talking to the front desk they confirmed they were having troubles with it.

I always stay where there are indoor corridors and never on the 1st or 2nd floor. It's too easy to get in.
I was in NYC last week and my room was very close to the elevator. A man had entered the elevator on a lower level room and pressed a floor above mine. At my floor, I got out and walked past my room and waited until the elevator doors closed to be sure he didn't step off behind me.
Im sure he was perfectly kind, etc. but you just never know!

Be careful what country you do this in as some charge by the person, not the room. You could be paying double for accommodation!

I'm a former hospitality professional. One of the details, we were told not to do is out anyone's information loudly. We confirmed information, grabbed a CC and when we gave the room key, we pointed to the room number and not say it out loud. You just never know who is listening.
When i worked hotels, i run a super tight ship. I never assigned people by elevators and stairways.
If i knew a woman was coming in alone, i will turn on the lights in the room and told them that i did.
It's one of the things i hate coming into a dark room at night. I would request they turn the light on.
I've travelled to 65 countries as a solo female. The most challenge was India where I actually did not feel safe. The rest of the countries were fine. I usually use public transport in Europe from airports. Most European cities have a metro which for me personally feels safer then getting into a taxi - enclosed space with a man. I prefer a public metro with lots of people and which has lots of cameras on it

Read up and check the Gov. Website b4 going anyplace. I ran the numbers comparing NYC to say, Delhi, bc at times India is in the news often for sexual crimes, and the crime rate was about equal, much to my surprise. I thought India was higher. An American woman expat in India has a blog w/ good info.. She may be the one who suggests wearing the red dot on your forehead bc it means that you’re married, and you’re less likely to be of interest. Be strong, be confident, be aware no matter where we are at.
Tip - don't call any pizza place/restaurants from flyers that may be slipped under your hotel door or check with the front desk to confirm it is a legitimate place. Someone could know you are alone as well as potentially hurting you financially if you give your credit card/debit card number to them when you call. Great video of tips and tricks.
That's a good one! I don't order in but I never even thought of it.
I've heard this too, and the front desk at some hotels even tell you not to call these places.

We were warned about this in Miami, on checkin! The front desk told us they’d give us legit restaurants. And yes, I said we. This was a credit card scam mostly.
Atm inside a bank is a physical safety too!
I often travel alone. I have a strap that goes over my head and is attached to my phone. It can be adjusted to be long enough that I can still carry my phone in my cross body bag. I think cross body bags are a must. I also pack a door stop to use in my hotel room. When I am walking at night I try to find a family to walk behind or just in front of, so I look like I am with the family. I use packing cubes when I travel and hide money in the cubes and between the bars of my suitcase under the lining. The joy of hiding money is when you pack for your next trip you find money you forgot about.

I usually don't wear a watch, but I do so when travelling. If someone asks what time it is-and this has happened-I simply look at my cheap watch instead of taking out my thousand-dollar phone.
My sister is a very open but socially unsavvy person, and on our last trip to the UK, she posted things on her social media like “Waiting at Heathrow to return home!” or “Picking up souvenirs for my girls”. I had to tell her to not do that - that flight from London to the west coast would give bad actors plenty of time to burgle her home. She thought I was just being the bossy big sister, but I’ve noticed that she now waits to post until she gets home.
Good for you. Sometimes a little hurt feelings are worth their safety. Just don't be bossy about it.😄
Great tips, Laurie! I have been a solo traveler on multiple business trips and your recommendation for checking hallways is perfect. I’ve had many times where I felt like someone was following me to my room and I would just say “oops” out loud and quickly turn around like I forgot something. Here is my tip - whenever possible do NOT take stairs in the hotel, you can get caught by someone very easily with no quick escape or exit.

I would say an underrated tip is to try and not look too... wealthy. I mean, its not a guarentee but whenever I travel to London from the very rural place I live, EVERYONE looks richer than me, and I think to myself 'if I were looking for someone to rob, I wouldn't choose me, I look dirt poor'.
Absolutely on your vaction you should look nice, but do you really need to be dripping in diamonds and designer labels?
Wonderful video! I am a female solo traveler who has toured 20+ countries. Your tips are spot on Laurie. I do have a few more to add if I may. You mentioned leaving the TV on while you were out of your room. Best to put a sports channel on so people assume a man is inside. Also, it has to be loud enough to hear from the hall (not enough to bother other guests).
Another item I always carry is a small personal alarm. You can put it in your coat pocket or the palm of your hand if you are nervous. If needed, just press the button and everyone will hear you and hopefully scare off the person you wanted to scare.
Last, if using a ride share service or taxi (which I never use unless absolutely necessary), I take a photo of the license plate in plain view of the driver and pretend to be on the phone talking to someone during my ride. Just another deterrent.
Yeah, I've often thought of I were traveling in another country, I would make sure the cab driver sees me (with phone) live recording what the ride rate is, and where we're going.
I'm going to start using that hanger hack. On a past cruise the young man who cleaned my room would tap ever so lightly on the door. While I was pondering if I had heard something verses something on the TV, the door would suddenly swing open. Needless to say, his intrusions led to embarrassing moments.
My favorite traveling hack is to sew pockets inside my pants. I keep some cash in the outside pockets. The inside pockets have my passport, credit cards, and large bills. When I need to remove something from the inside pockets, I go to the restroom.
Also look for recent youtube videos about common scams that thieves use in the country you are planning to visit. This helped us in Italy when walking in the Piazza della Signoria. Behind us we heard an armload of books falling and people talking loudly. I remembered the video showed that this is a common distraction to get people to look away so that they can more easily steal their bag. In general it's a good idea to steer away from any commotion when traveling.
yes, another one is someone pretending to trip and fall and other people helping them. The falling person and the other people are working together. During the commotion, another person picks pockets.
When I went to Edmonton last October, I made sure to withdraw money from the same bank branch each time. I also tried go to the same cashier each time to get a bit of change as well (mostly loonies and toonies), so I would hopefully be a tiny bit memorable to them. I also knew I was being recorded on camera, which could only be a help.
Secondly, if you want to make someone back away from you quickly, pretend like you're going to puke on them and push for the nearest bathroom. It attracts attention like woah! This was a trick my mother and grandmother swore by!

Some very good tips! I am widowed, so I travel alone quite often. I am an American, but have lived in a heavily tourist visited city in Europe for 11 years now. I use cross body bags daily and usually keep the bag toward the front of my body. I use RFID covers on my credit cards and bank cards so no one can electronically pickpocket me. I have a door stop alarm. It has been set off by housekeeping, but happily not by someone breaking in. When I pack it, I simply take the battery out of it and put them together in a plastic bag. That way there is no danger of it going off accidently during the flight. When getting money at an ATM in a foreign country, decline the conversion rate it offers. It will be worse than what your bank gives you. I have never once been a victim of crime in a foreign country. This includes Italy, France, Spain, Greece, Germany, Ukraine, Poland, Turkey, Czech Rep, Belgium, Israel , UK, and several others. I hope that never changes!

Im in my sixties and love traveling by myself for example eastern Europe and Turkey. A small group of young people attempted to pick pocket my back pack. It was only hearing the zip opening that alerted me, I swung around, swore loudly and grabbed the boy, maybe not the best of ideas! My lesson, do not look at my phone while walking!
My bank said that thieves put skimmers that collect your card and pin from gas pumps on the outside edges of gas stations. I always go as close to the center of the pumps when I get gas.
It is worth it to go inside to pay for gas.

Good idea. I always pay for gas inside. I do not trust gas pump pay locations. The store people can not monitor them.
I learned this decades ago; when little kids run towards you, swarm around like little bees (as a distraction), like a general, I just shout in their language "Police!". They're all gone within 60 seconds. Works evertime.
I've just started traveling and will be doing it solo for the foreseeable future. Montreal was my first flight and trip. London/Edinburgh will be my next one. Needless to say, I'm a nervous traveler for now with airports and getting to and from them. These are what helps as well as a few other things i do when traveling or going into NYC.
Tip 1: show confidence. If you don't feel it, fake it. I grew up going into NYC so I'm confident in a city. I brought that with me in Montreal and walked around (even when I was lost and found it I didn't have data on my phone).
Tip 2: UA-cam. I don't have issues with navigating a city. It's airports and getting to and from as well. There are actually videos of people walking you through the airport from deplaning to getting outside and, for Montreal, how to get tickets for the bus shuttle to city center. What a life saver! There's also video on how metros work in various cities and recommendations and how to avoid scams.
Tip 3: don't be a target. No bling, keep larger bills and passports in a neck pouch or money belt tucked into your pants so it's hidden. I wear a crossbody bag that also goes across my upper stomach (shoulder issues) so it's in front of you but make sure it's zipped.
Tip 4: extra phone for pics. I have a wallet phone. I have important things on my. It freaks me out to hand it over to someone to take my pic. So I kept my old phone when I switched and the old phone is completely wiped clean and has no access to anything. That's what I hand to someone to take my pic. I took pics for people in NYC and I can't tell you how many people handed over their phone with credit cards and cash attached.
Tip 5: do your research to get an idea of where things are. Borough market is east, Big Ben is West. Central Park is north, Statue of Liberty is South Old Montreal is east, Chinatown just west of it, downtown Montreal is just south. Lol and don't keep looking down at your phone.
Tip 6: listen to your gut. If something feels off, get out of there.

I love the phone tip. I would add that if you don't have an old phone, buy a cheap burner at the drugstore and use it only for pictures.
Walking confidently is a tip that will help you anywhere you go. Criminals look for a soft target. Look like a hard target even if you are lost. That's a marketable skill and one I've developed. Also, try and blend as much as possible. Dress similarly to the people where you're visiting so you look like you belong there.
@@chiarac3833 that's how I survived living in NYC for a number of years, especially walking home at night. I might add that it's important to avoid eye contact, because it signals confrontation.
I have always worried when traveling alone on plane and need to use restroom. You don’t know the people sitting next to you and you have to leave everything . I now use a cross body and keep my valuables in and have on me when I use the restroom.
No. 1 Always walk as if you know where you are going, with purpose. No.2 ask directions only from a policeman or a person behind the counter of a reputable store. No.3 keep your phone out of site, plan your route before you set out for the day and remember it. We were safer before cell phones, never distracted. no.4 learn to dress like a local not a tourist. 5. Sort and fold your cash in useable amounts such as 50 euros, and never pull out a large wad. Solo female traveller for 50 years and never had a problem following these rules.

When traveling internationally my first stop is the ATM at the airport…no need for a bank the next day, or the hotel ATM…and, usually the ATM’s are before customs, so only cleared travelers in the area…(much safer)…
Remember to only drink carbonated water and NO ICE! Put a bottle next to your toothbrush, so you do not forget when brushing your teeth in the morning…(so not fun to spend a vacation in the bathroom with Montezuma’s Revenge…) *** this includes the airlines who will contract their ice locally…

@@Freiya2011 Hi - the bacterial/viral water profile in every city - even in the USA is different - (which is why Sourdough bread tastes different in each city) - it’s a good habit to get into, even in the USA, due to the desire to support health even when tired, cold, stressed from traveling…your gut biome doesn’t have one extra battle to fight to keep you healthy when trying to adapt to a different environment…ANY different profile than your home water system (which your gut biome has adjusted to as it’s “normal”) is tough on a body!

I don’t carry a personal bag anymore. I wear a multipocketed vest under a jacket. Traveled all over UK and Spain and had zero problems. Handy through TSA as well.
Great tips Laurie. I’ve done a lot of solo travelling & here are my tips… 1) ALWAYS walk with confidence as though you know exactly where you’re going. 2) if walking in a scary spot call someone & tell them it’s basically an assurance call. 3) when using an ATM - wherever you are, cover your hand when punching in the code… many atms are bugged & make sure you log out. 4) if your hotel room hangers don’t come off the rail, use a belt or scarf to secure the door know to the chain. Otherwise, an ironing board against the door is also effective.🌸

All the years I have been traveling abroad alone, I so far, have never had anyone try to rob or harm me. I make a point to bled in and not look like a tourist. I don't carry anything of worth with me. I also never go out after it gets dark
Be cautious in churches. Watch where you sit. Put your purse in front as well as umbrellas. When you close your eyes to pray, you may feel safe but thieves look for such moments. Always be vigilant even in holy places.
I travel all over internationally solo. In my early 60's and I love it!
Good tip about someone following you! I was in Hawaii with my 2 kids and this young guy kept following us down the street. So I decided to slow and let him pass, he stopped so when I passed he did the same thing about 3 times then the last time he threw his hands up and said I give up and walked on. I was sure he was going to get
something from my purse or something.

The main take away is plan, prepare and stay observant, which is fairly easy if one does not have their eyes constantly on a cell phone. I’ve traveled many years (business trips) solo and your tip about sidestepping or keep walking if alone enroute to hotel room, or in elevators (good advice no matter where you are!) also keep a few bucks in a money clip in front pocket to throw at potential thief/assailant to give yourself time to run away.
You may want to think twice about door stoppers or the hanger trick: they will make it very difficult for emergency responders to enter if you have an emergency. An alarm that sounds when the door opens is a much better option.
If you’re checking in at hotel alone, I ask that my room # not be said out loud. There’s no need for anyone else to know, including staff, beyond the one giving you the room information.
My husband now knows not to ask what’s our room number while standing in the lobby. I’ll show him the card. He leaves the check in process up to me.
I've noticed that most hotels don't say it out loud, but write it on the key packet. And maybe it's because I've been alone.
I’ve had them change the room when they said the number out loud. They don’t make that mistake a second time
@@paddlegal3097 I still have to smack mine periodically not to say the number out loud, even when he can read it! Now mostly he asks which floor now. I still don’t like that but it helps since we often can get in the same elevator.

I’ve kept money in one of those fake Secret deodorant bottles before and placed it in my toiletry bag. Worked perfectly 👍🏾
I'm not sure if this is still available, but when I flew into JFK International, and had no idea how to get to NYC, I saw a bus for a major hotel. I pretended to be a hotel guest, paid the $10 fee and got a really cheap ride to the heart of the city. That was almost 25 years ago, but the idea may still apply, depending on the city of interest.
I’m 69, always travelling solo, inside and outside my country. Never had a problem. Pay attention, look confident and google a lot before you go!

Great tips. I find it easier to be observant when I travel alone. Because there is no-one else wanting my attention so I am free to look around for suspicious behaviour. 😊 And I never keep anything in my pockets. I also love the Travelon and Pacsafe bags and backpacks.😊

I have a small , thin cross body purse I put under my jacket. When my jacket zipped up, you can not tell it is there.
I don’t know about other countries or cities because I rarely use atms abroad. But as a native New Yorker I can tell you that the indoor atms off hours are very popular places for homeless people and shady individuals to hang out. I wouldn’t recommend using those unless the bank is also open and there are people inside.

I just step inside and get money from the teller. People say it is inconvenient but, I feel safe.
When I was living in Costa Rica, I used an indoor ATM. Unbeknownst to me, there was a man awaiting my exit. Thankfully, my driver saw it and intimidated the man away.
I didn't know about until much later. I'm so thankful I didn't get mugged that day!

I had the same experience in Costa Rica. I was exiting the ATM in acommercial center, when a man came up to me to tell me that somebody was following me. I was able to walk away quickly, cross the street and get away from the danger. I, too, lived in Costa Rica, so I know what the dangers are there.
Before I went to Columbia and Barcelona I watched videos and looked at what people wore to blend in.
Love all you safety information… I always told myself if someone was following me perhaps I would act crazy.. Start talking to myself? Example: I’m hungry…. We’ll it’s not my fault I told you to eat breakfast… etc😂 perhaps smack myself

I like the hanger technique. I will try that next month. I usually put the ironing board in front of the door. That way, if someone does get in, I'll hear the ironing board fall.
Tip: put your money in multiple places in your purse so when you take money out people do not see a wad of cash.

If traveling internationally use one of the e-sim apps (if your phone supports it) and activate while you have Wi-Fi. I've heard a common place for thieves to hang around are the sim stores. Besides, you want to avoid those roaming costs from the beginning.

I agree with you about traveling in winter...it is tough to hide anything when it is so hot!
The key is to be proactive vs reactive when you go anywhere just like wearing a seatbelt riding in a car you aren't expecting a crash, but you have it on in the event something happens. Another proactive tip is to not make your movements predictable even if you are going to revisit some places like a close by coffee shop or restaurant you do not want make it so someone can plan your movements. Take an alternate route to where you are going even if it is to return to you accommodations. Being aware of your surroundings, not making yourself look like you are easy to get to, not being obvious of where your cash and cards are, and emulate local behavior are all solid advice even if you are visiting another city in your home state.

Travel tips: Walk with confidence. Like you know where you are going. Even if I'm white cane-ing in the airport, I walk like I know what's up. Plus for me, it's a cane. Once I almost had to use it.
Trust your gut but don't be fearful. I know, weird combo.
I ALWAYS carry a couple of bills inside my shoes under the lining. Learned that from living in NYC in Hell's Kitchen in the late 70s. Also money in my bra along with emergency credit card.
For photos, I bring extra old phones as someone said.
Travel days I use a money belt or pouch that goes around my neck. RFID for that pouch and my wallet.

I haven't traveled a lot by myself, but I did travel a lot with my daughter when she was a teenager, when I still felt responsible for her safety. We tried to blend in...didn't wear too bright of eye catching clothes. It worked...people actually asked me for directions!

I never wear t shirts with writing on them as that may hint that I am not a local person. In London a group of 3 young Americans asked me for directions.
If you have Priority Pass you can book your airport transfers through them or you can research airport transfers, also if you book through Expedia you can book an airport transfer. I’ve done all 3. I have also ask another solo female traveler from my plane how they get to their hotels when I went to Barcelona. I took a cab as that’s what she suggested. Also you won’t set off that alarm on accident. You have your turn it on and off. Once I traveled to a concert with 2 other female friends. One accidentally set it off when she tried to go out the door. But she never travels. It’s loud and I quickly fixed it. It’s good to have and I never forget it’s there. Great info per usual Laurie thank you! Whether traveling alone or with my husband in a foreign country I always use an ATM, it’s easy to tell which are associated with a legit bank, in the airport. Cover when using your PIN and never, ever accept the conversion. Happy travels!

Thank you, Laurie. I usually travel alone, and am always aware of my personal space. I wear one of those zippered waist belts tucked into the front of my jeans. I divide my money/cards so if I did get robbed they would not have everything. In San Francisco, the holiday rep told us not to openly consult a street map as this would mark us out as tourists who may be worth robbing. In Venice, the rep told us ladies to hold our purses/handbags with both arms against the front of our body to make us a difficult target for pickpockets. In a group listening to a tour guide, beware anyone creeping up to the edge of the group hoping that they can take advantage when attention is diverted to look at something. I must get those zipper clips though. Am I paranoid?? Ha ha!

When I took my daughter to Las Vegas 15 years ago, it was just the two of us. However, anytime we were asked if it was just the two of us, we always said that we were on our way to meet our husbands. Of course, they were in a different state but no one in LV needed to know that.
Thank you for addressing tips for a solo female traveler. My loving husband has health issues that have affected our travel plans in retirement as he doesn't travel well any longer. He is encouraging me to travel solo. My biggest fear is getting safely from the airport to the hotel if I don't rent a car. Your tips have been extremely helpful in settling my mind to give solo travel a whirl.
I understand. I highly recommend a group trip. There are some for females over 50. They are in charge of the transportation. Or invite a girl friend but have separate rooms.

Great tips, thanks. I travel solo most of the time. I realized I could be more observant in hotel halls, good reminder. I’d also like to tell folks: go with your gut if a situation or person feels off or makes you uncomfortable. Don’t overthink it and don’t worry that you may be rude by going another way, waiting for the next elevator, etc. just get away from the situation.
I always travel alone. I have not seen the hangar on the door hack and really like it. I'm off to Africa again and will use it when I'm not in a tent.
2 tips: I used to travel a lot for work. I arrived very late & the room had had turn-down service. When I woke in the morning & opened the drapes, I discovered that the sliding door was completely open. I was a lucky lady that night. Tip 2: I always get cash at the airport when I arrive in a foreign country. Unfortunately, the guards that accompany the guys that fill the ATMs were on strike. So no cash was available at any ATM. Luckily, my hotel put the taxi fare on my room so I could pay the driver. So have a backup plan for cash!

I made some big mistakes in Europe last year when I was traveling by myself. You covered these in this video and when I go to Africa in June I will be better prepared. As a 73 yo female I feel like I am easy prey 😮 but it’s not going to stop me from traveling!!

I have been working (thus traveling) in Africa for over 20 years. While it is my favorite place to be, I do not go out alone at night, ever. Even if I go with friends to a restaurant etc, we do not stand on the street waiting for a taxi to come by-we have the hotel, restaurant etc call a known taxi for us. It was my African of-workers who told me this. Everyone is very very kind and helpful.
RENTAL CAR TIPS. USE THE BIG BRAND NAMES. DO NOT PAY FOR YOUR CAR IN ADVANCE. There are many 'cheaper' 3rd party rental (some phantom) companies online. Some are brokers/ pimps to try to get your money or a Finder Fee from a bigger-name airport pick-up desk.
I was exhausted from a long international flight, then had to stand in a slow line only to be told I had no reservation. Why? Without realizing it, I'd used an online scammer situation. 😢
As far as the hard-sell desk clerk was concerned, I was an easy target and charged full price there ('Not many cars available ') PLUS the cheap price online. AND no refund for either. What a hit!
This was July in the UK - the busiest travel season. That was another mistake.
Please. Learn from my experiences. Next time I need a rental car ANYWHERE in the world, I'll be walking into a local big-name company and let them take care of my needs for another location.

I stayed in a hotel room by myself but pretended I had company for three days , even the hotel believed i had company. I wedged my door so it would be harder to force the door. I tend to be over cautious but better to be safe than sorry.
I was pickpocketed at the Karlsruhe ( Germany ) train station. It was from my rear pocket in a non secure pocket as I was looking at the schedule board. Fortunately it was my decoy wallet. My real wallet was in the ‘Napolean’ pocket on the front of my shirt

I have travelled solo all my life- now late 60s I have been followed when in Lima Peru- I could see he was clocking me as I walked in different directions to check- I went into a chemist and stayed there for 20 minutes and when I came out he was gone. In London I must admit I felt very safe getting off the tube at 11pm I walked back to my rooms no problem. I am going to Europe for 3 months soon and my major concern is now that I am older I would be an easy target. I have thought of using a toddler rein to connect my hand to my suitcase- maybe that is overkill😊I always carry my cash and passport on my body. I always have a crossbody bag or sling bag in front of me. I never wear any jewellery- I have been lucky so far but I admit I am a bit nervous about my upcoming trip.
I'm 68, and agree with you to an extent. However, I'm giving up my luggage or purse before allowing myself to be drug down a sidewalk or street if someone comes by on a scooter and grabs at something. Your health and your life are invaluable, most other things can always be replaced. Stay safe and enjoy your travels.

On train platforms, I make sure not to stand near the tracks, but rather back (as Laurie says) with my back to a wall, or a vending machine, or a timetable board. I do not interact with males who approach me for no reason and adopt a “Flig you” look on my face while avoiding eye contact. I do not let anyone stand behind me. I do not have to be the first on the train. And I have my crossbody in front of me or under my coat as I board. This is not to say I haven’t had some very nice chats once I am safely on the train and seated on the aisle. Ahem. Thanks for doing this Laurie!

I travel solo,every year to france….I carry my credit cards(2) nd any cash in my bra….never carry a bag at all…my cell phone is never out of my closed hand, simple methods have always worked for me. I always take a taxi from Charles de Gaulle and use credit card…I get some get cash at thé airport from the ATM . Have never had a problem,or felt unsafe in Paris and ignore any scammers and they are everywhere. People, with enormous luggage are prime targets…. You never need more than a carryon for as much as a month( or more )😊 in Europe .

@@adrianamartins5479 It's called do laundry. You can easily spend a month anywhere with only a carry on, and have some room for bought goodies, if you pack smartly with an intent to do laundry. It's called being a savvy traveler, not a boring one.
No need to be snide. A boring traveler is one who thinks a lot of clothes & shoes make one look interesting or rich. An irritating traveler is one who thinks it's worth his/her friend/family member's time to wait for someone to deal with unnecessary extra belongings. Carry-on is plenty even for multiple climates.

Hi Laurie, I've travelled alone in mainland Europe and also spent 4 years travelling and living around Asia. What I would say for western countries, is try not to look like a tourist, deep have your face in a map constantly, get orientated to the area you will be visiting, keep phones in a pocket and not in your hand. Money, well I've learned the hard way in Malaysia, only take out with you what you can afford to lose. Don't take out money at night, and whereever you are, always stay on the main, lit areas, don't go off piste. One thing I learned, again the hard way, in Asia, don't arrive by public transport after midnight, this is when the undesireables come out. Also don't walk around in headphones, you need to be aware of your surroundings, not be in 'lala land'. Also, take a good does of common sense before you go.

Oh quick second thought put a privacy screen saver on your phone and if your using google maps to get around just set your route and look how may blocks or what have till you turn. Then walk with it down when your close look back at your phone for next steps. That’s what I do when I travel alone or with others. Then I walk with confidence and with purpose like I live and belong there.
What's nice about having an Apple Watch, if you use an iPhone, you don't have to look at your phone, just glance at your watch.
Don’t wear Apple Watches when traveling in a high pickpocket country. That makes you a target!! It’s ok when you’re at home. But if you’re targeted as a tourist this is not a good idea. You’re more likely to be robbed.
How are you more likely to be robbed when wearing an Apple watch? Just curious.
Because Apple Watches are expensive and because they are more than just a watch it’s like your phone. It’s Apple and it extremely easy for them to take and you never know it. That watch is basically a mini phone and computer. And they a get good money for it.
