I have been going between Europe and the US for over 60 years now. Enjoy your tips and would like to add my favorite, especially when traveling with your husband on a cruise! The zippered laundry bags come in many sizes, and in multi-packs at the dollar-type stores. I use them for all types of clothing and accessories. They take up no room, and when you unpack you just place them in the various drawers and shelves you have in a cabin or hotel. One can then serve as a dirty laundry bag. When using plastic bags, I always punch some holes in them, so you can push down and any air remaining will go out. Also, I decide on a color scheme for my clothing. Black, white and red or yellow come to mind. If an item does not go with anything else, I leave it at home.
My husband and I just returned from a two week circle of Europe tour. I watched many of your videos before our trip and they were very informative and helpful so thank you! One thing I suggest is that if you are late arriving for your international flight due to road closures or construction (that happened to us before our return flight) find an airport employee to assist you. In our case they moved us to the front of the line or we wouldn’t have made our flight.
Yes! Could not agree more! We were in London a few years ago and the M25/was delayed due to a crash so we had to take back roads. We were literally running to the gate and ran into an employee who helped us. She took us the VIP way and, thankfully, we made the flight! 😰😰😰
Not only do you have to roll a suitcase over rough streets, you also will need to be able to carry it up and down flights of steps when using public transportation. There's not always a handy elevator. We always use metro systems, and I'm here to tell you, they can be tricky. Pack light!
We just spent 8 weeks driving in France through mostly small towns. We almost never had an elevator and sometimes faced 3 flights of stairs. We transferred everything we needed for the night into a smaller carry-on and left the bigger bag locked in the car. Never had a problem with anything being stolen out of the car.
I was taught years ago that if you can't lift and carry all your luggage for 500m then it's too heavy. Lots of steps in subways/metro and cobbles. Buy toiletries at destination, saves leakage, weight and hassle.
I was in London in March and things went rather smoothly for us! As Laurie suggested, arriving early for the airport is critical and will make your trip less stressful. Another tip….we arranged departure Covid tests the day after we arrived so we wouldn’t have to rush last minute. That gave me much needed peace of mind and I could enjoy my time in London without worry.
Laurie, we did 14 nights in Europe all with carry-on. We did this using a lot of your tips and guidance (and we knew we would have to do laundry). Thanks! This opens up a completely different way to travel and we avoided checked bag wait time / pick-up AND bag drop in Schipol. Game-changing WINNER!

Also (and my wife doesn't like this), I use disposable clothes for long flights and travel day - I had an still nice Nautica button down that had a fray on the collar and an older pair of socks, so I wore them then threw it out at the destination...
100% agree with a food tour on your first day. Before I had the budget for food tours, I would do a hop-on/hop-off bus tour. Both help you get familiar with the area and figure out where you might want to go back to.

Yes! I am surprised how close to departure time some opened in the past. We almost missed our flight b/c they did not give standby passengers seats until super close to the time.
Hi Laurie, Thank you so much for the various tips. This is my contribution...the new 'laundry sheet/strips can be cut up and used in the gallon zip lock bags for laundry on the go. The brand I bough was called Tru-Earth, but there are others. The sheets are like 2 in x 3 in., totally dissolve in hot water.
We recently returned from a trip to Tuscany flying out of Florence to Amsterdam and then Atlanta. The best advice I can give you is to expect delays, delays, delays. The problem with staffing is world wide. Even if we had chosen to carry on our luggage, we were still required to stand in line for 2 1/2 hours to check into our international flight. No one was allowed to check in online, so that made for a huge mess! There were only two agents checking in 4 to 5 international flights at one time. We had travel insurance and that would be the best advice I would give anyone. Since we almost missed our flight in Amsterdam to head back to the states, we were confident that we could just easily spend the night and not have to pay extra. Another thing I need to mention is about the requirement to test before arriving home. In Europe, apparently tests are not as widely available, so the best advice I could give you is to make a reservation for the day before you leave so you don’t have to worry about finding a test.
I saw multiple travel vloggers talking about the mess in Amsterdam this past weekend. We’re heading through there twice in the next month and not looking forward to it. We had fairly long delays there in December. We did buy travel insurance for this trip, knowing the probability of delays or getting quarantined are pretty high now.
@@LweissTTU you can do either. If you do the call one, you need to have the test with you when you leave home. Just make sure your phone can call internationally or you won’t be able to use your personal cell phone to call back to testing location in the States.
Great tips! Heads up - just came back from London, and had my iPad stolen from the plastic baskets that you put everything in to go through security! Jacket, purse, shoes, iPad all had to go in separate baskets, and then they go on the conveyor belt while you are going through the metal detector. When I got through, all the baskets were there, but no iPad. The very helpful police told me that sadly it happens all the time. Also, even though my liquids were in a clear bag, we were all told to empty them and use the bags they provide, and I did hear people complaining! It was no big deal. Also, I took quite a bit of cash with me, and hardly used any. London is practically a cash free zone - everything is done by tapping your card - it never leaves your sight (someone we need to start doing here), and is so quick and efficient. But make sure you have a credit/debit card that has a chip. Also, all bookings for theater, zoo, entrance to attractions, etc, are done on line, and you need to have your phone/confirmation email readily accessible as you show this to the staff. No physical tickets were issued. I thought it was great, but I image for someone not very computer savvy, it could cause some anxiety.
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie I don’t think so - as you load the bins then put them on the belt and then have to walk away to go through the metal detector. I suppose you could try and watch but the conveyor belt was a curved one so that would be tricky. Fortunately everything was backed up and in the Cloud and I didn’t use the iPad to do any financial stuff. Just very annoying-but the police were wonderful!
I had a similar experience at JFK. Now, I leave my iPad and laptop in my bag and let them search afterwards. The time is worth my iPad, Mac book etc. I usually get searched anyway,
We were in Munich 3 weeks ago and in some of the sites and museums and on public transportation you could only use an N95 mask (not a simple surgeon's mask). I saw that that people who didn't have an N95 mask ended up buying one with their entrance ticket at a jacked up price. So it's worth packing a couple. Regulations are changing all the time in Europe so it's best be prepared.
That happened to me at Pisa airport, when returning to UK. I had a mask on but it was not accepted and had to buy some N95 masks to be allowed to board.

Laurie in Paris traveling on the Metro someone cut the bottom of my cross body bag & stole my passport. Because I had a copy of my passport with barcode in my suitcase I was able to go to the American embassy & they helped me get another one issued in 24 hours. This tip that you just shared is invaluable.
Loctote bag is what I’ve always use whenever I’m in other country. Blades won’t go through and it also has RFID. Very convenient and will give you peace of mind.
Wow! That's one of the reasons I paid extra to get one of the passport cards, that way I can leave the passport in the hotel safe, and still have official ID on me. But I did the same - photocopied the passport (just re-did it today, to include the barcode, which I hadn't done before, thanks to Laurie's tip!), keep a copy in each bag, along with copies of vaccine card.
I was away on an international trip when you posted this but from my experience the most important thing to pack is PATIENCE. In Amsterdam we had requested a wheelchair for my BFF which the airline provided, but there was no one available to push it: thank heavens it was 6 a.m., because I became the “driver.” (It was actually kind of fun) For restaurant recommendations I ask the hotel doorman for “cheap & cheerful” spots-it rarely fails! And even though I do check a bag (1 for 19 days), your videos have helped me enormously! I actually had room this time for some lovely, mostly flat, souvenirs so thank you from the bottom of my credit limit. 😁🥰

Laurie, this is my first post, but I have enjoyed your channel for quite some time. Our family of four ("kids" are 20 and 22) just returned from a three week trip to Europe. Your tips were invaluable. We each had one carry-on and one backpack. I doubt you could convince any of us to check a bag; it made things too easy with customs, trains, stairs, walking from train stations to hotels, etc. Here are just some of your tips that really helped: COMPRESSION CUBES, Tide sink packets, split things into multiple pouches, use your backpack as an extension for your suitcase, if a top or bottom is not a "multi-tasker" do not pack it, limit the number of shoes! I know there are others, but these immediately come to mind. I would also suggest KT blister tape (saved my husbands feet in the first 3 days), and to pack one quart ziploc bags for liquids when returning home. The quart size ziploc bag allowed us to move through airport security in both Venice and London (the quart size was close enough to a liter that they did not question the size). We did use our "American size" liquids bag to travel TO Europe, and as the trip progressed, we had less liquids and would move them to smaller containers/jars which we were then able to fit into the smaller quart ziplocs. We also packed spare ziplocs (another tip from you) of multiple sizes and we used all of them for various purposes. While not stylish, I spent most of the trip in my Hoka Bondi 7 tennis shoes as we walked an average of 5-7 miles a day; a few days as much as 10 miles. I also packed a pair of Rieker sandals that were good for days with less than 5 miles. However, we were very fortunate as we did not have a day where our shoes were at risk of getting wet. Just got back from an 8 night trip to Scotland/Ireland. My Mother & I did carry on and personal item only. Be aware. If you travel thru Heathrow, they are extremely strict on the amount of liquids in your bag. They said I had "too many", and proceeded to move the items to their bag, just throwing the items in, instead of carefully strategically placing them in. They eventually let me have the 3 items that wouldn't fit in their 1 bag. Another in our group was not as lucky. When leaving Dublin, make sure that you use the bag that they provide, instead of your own. Leave plenty of room when you pack for your trip, for your souvenirs. I barely was able to close my bag and keep it in the carry on size (used a luggage strap).
Hi Laurie! My husband and I are preparing for a trip from the US to Papua New Guinea later this year (our son, daughter-in-law & 3 granddaughters serve as missionaries to that country). LONG HAUL FLIGHTS, here we come!!! We did this 2 times before in 2012 & 2015. It’s been a while. So I have been blowing through all of your videos for tips and travel hacks. Getting through TSA is my fear in the airports and the bad people that prey upon innocent travelers is another. I really appreciate your channel. All of your videos are great and very helpful! Thank you! Here’s a travel tip for snacking. I have used powered peanut butter, PB2. You just mix it with water and you have real peanut butter. Powered peanut butter doesn’t take up precious space in your liquids bag like regular peanut butter would. Keep the videos coming! ❤️
I am off to Istanbul again! A reminder to those who cannot walk the distances in the airports, ask for a wheelchair when you book your flight. This saved me when there was a delay in getting my COVID test results back and there was a rush to the gate. Attendants are knowledge about about where to go and they go very quickly. In Paris this helped when there was a gate change (I did not hear it!).
I'm recommending all my clients fly in TWO days before a cruise now. There have been so many cancellations that one day is no longer enough time to reschedule that flight.
I used to travel a lot when I lived in the Middle East. Best tips - use baggies lots, make a packing list and keep it in your suitcase. My partners said book every third line. Having now been back home in Australia for 10 years and going to travel to Europe in 6 months your videos have been very useful. Thanks.
My return through Heathrow was fairly simple. The only question I got was about my antigen test for re-entering the U.S. Strangely, the one thing I got hung up on for security in both directions was my jewelry case. I had too much metal for them to see through on the Xray. Keep your jewelry easy to access.

I have been traveling with the Cabeau neck pillow for years between Orlando and Australia. However, I spend a little more and get the one with vents because it is cooler and less restrictive (and I don’t get hot). Love your channel.
For my 2weeks to Ghana in a carryon, i turned my pillow to the front, under my chin. It helped where my head did not flop forward as usual. Also packed my liquids in balloons. Easy to toss on my return flight. Less items in my carry-on.
Merrill’s slip ins are wonderful for travel, and Zulily carries them occasionally. They are great on cobblestones and uneven or slick surfaces. I have two pair and find I wear them more than any other shoes I own! And, I am now living in a World Heritage City in MX, so cobblestones everywhere!!!
I travel with a partner. #1 We email each other a photo of our passports AND front and back of credit cards we’re carrying. If the credit card/debit card is stolen, the other person has the cc number and the phone #’s of the banks. #2 We find it interesting to try to find things in local stores that we may need. In Barcelona, we bought socks. We look for toothpaste, licorice, different snacks that cant be found in the US, etc. Generally, we like to “shop like a native”. Also, thrift stores in other countries are very interesting. Small thrifted items can be great souvenirs/memories. I’m looking forward to my next adventure. Thanks for your tips!
How fun! My only problem with thrifting is I usually want to wash the item. Have you done a Rupit tour with Spanish Trails outside of Barcelona? We’ve done it twice!
Thank you for these very helpful tips! In addition to carry-on size requirements, be sure to know the permissible weights. Some airlines are quite restrictive. For example, on Lufthansa, your carry-on can weigh no more than 8kg - that is just over 17.5 pounds. I prefer to travel only with carry-on, but that kind of weight restriction makes it very difficult - at least for me.
These days, many international airlines restrict carry on weight to 7 kgs (15 lbs) - and they may very well weigh them and make you check them if they are over. Some restrict the personal item to a smallish purse/handbag. Some include the weight of the personal item as part of the 76 kgs, and some won’t allow a personal item at all. Check the rules for any airline you are thinking of using to get the best setup for you.
Oh my! I had no idea! I've spent this week minimizing clothes to get all my stuff into 1 carry-on roller and 1 personal item backpack, using so many of your ideas. I was so proud of myself to get 16 days worth for a 2 week cruise plus time in Southampton into these two bags. I weighed the carry-on this morning and it's 30.8 lbs. Now you're saying some airlines won't allow more than 15-17 lbs carr-on? What airlines and what locations have you experienced this? I'm trying to follow the news advice not to check bags into Heathrow. HELP!
@@mjb9176 A quicker answer might be which ones don’t have that limit. All the major European airlines, Lufthansa, Swissair, etc have that limit, as does Qantas & Air New Zealand, and the big Middl East Carriers Emirates, Qatar, etc. Emirates is the strictest. Some of the US-based airlines might have a higher limit for their internationals, but as none of them ever fly to and from where I need I have never explored their limits. It’s frustrating, isn’t it…. Fitting the stuff in isn’t the hard part; it’s keeping the weight down. I’m doing a trial pack right now for a month in Egypt coming up later in the year, and best I have been able to do so far is 7.3 kg, which I will probably get away with. You will not get away with the weigh you are planning. Best bet for you is to list all the airlines that go where you want, check their limits online, and talk to some of their reps about weight limits. One advantage for you flying out of the US is some airlines have negotiated a different weight limit for travellers departing certain specific countries. You need to do a lot of online checking, or talk to a good travel agent. Also enquire about the size limit of your personal item. Always a good idea with a personal item is to have your true valuables and documents in a small secure purse you can quickly pull out of your personal item if they say it is oversized and must be gate checked.
I bought that neck rest you recommended because of your review of it and have it to this day. I've never had to use it yet but you never know. It's super plush. Thank you for your tips and tricks and fun videos. By the way I noticed we have the same Conair curling iron. Lol don't see that one often haha. Loved the bloopers you add at the end now 😂. A couple of things I like to do. Bring an empty water bottle though security. Then fill it in the airport. That way if you are thirsty or need to take pills, you don’t have to wait for the flight attendants to bring you something to drink. To prevent blisters, roll dry devolved the spots that might get rubbed by a shoe or sandal. You even do the bottom of yiur feet. And it doesn’t show. I also pack blister bandages as a backup. You can find them in any drug store. That way, you can still walk around even if you do get a blister. Snack size ziploc bags are great for jewelry, pills, vitamins etc. I carry an iPad to watch shows, play games, read books and look up information at my destination. Be sure to keep your charger and cable handy for when you are on the plane because your battery will run down. One last comment about souvenirs. While this is very personal, I like to avoid anything that might break or spill. I like to buy pot holders and tea towels to help me remember my trip. They are soft, easy to squish, and I use them when I het home
A suggestion made with love as a UK person with beloved US family- Americans talk a lot more loudly and clearly than we do and it means you stand out more. My US family that has visited the UK a lot knows to turn the volume down. My US family that hasn’t visited a lot, didn’t realise. And yes, I know it works the other way around for us when visiting the US.
I’m with you on the anti theft purses!! I always take my slash resistant bag when we are sightseeing. Whether in the states or internationally. I’ve heard too many horror stories about the strap or bottom of the bag being cut. Travel insurance and travel health insurance will save you time and money. My husband’s last trip was horrible. His first leg took off late and we thought he was going to miss his connection in Denver, but that plane had mechanical problems. He landed in Denver and by the time another plane got there the crew timed out. So because I had bought trip insurance he was booked on a flight for the next morning. He was flying in for our youngest daughter’s wedding. So I was dealing with two very upset people until he landed in Oklahoma City!! 😳🙄😂 well it’s funny now!! Love all your tips, tricks and hacks!!
@@the-red-ghost You have to make sure that brand's bag says slash resistant (for the straps). They're not slash proof, but slash-resistant is better than zero resistance imo.
@@the-red-ghost the bag I have is actually slash resistant. I made sure of that after I bought it. If I’m going to pay 50+ for a bag, I make sure it does what it says it will do or I return it. I returned 2 bags for it not doing what it was stated to do. Yes the companies were not happy about me slashing the bag, but I got my money back.
@@the-red-ghost, Travelon bags with the slash proof straps are guaranteed. They have a mesh metal core inside the strap to prevent them from being cut.
One thing I do if I am on public transport anywhere is know the name / number of the stop BEFORE the one I am getting off at - that way once we reach there I know the next time we decelerate I need to get gathered up and off!
Just went through security at DFW for a flight on Air Canada. I had carefully packed my liquids in my backpack after watching your videos. We are TSA pre check - I did not have to remove my shoes, open my backpack, show my liquids bag or separate my electronics!
The new carryon looks awesome. I also liked your little security purse. Nowadays with lack of staff at airports, you may want to get to the airports even 4-5 hours ahead of time.. Especially for leaving parts of Europe. When I left Portugal in January, there were only like 6 guys doing passport control for a hall filled with 500+ people. Also pack patience for delays. My most recent trip to Europe every single flight (except for the last flight home) was delayed.
Ahhh delayed flights! I had a very close call experience with that long ago. We were in Amsterdam traveling back to the U.S. in 1984. We requested a wake-up call from the hotel's front desk. They failed to wake us up. When I awoke it was maybe 10-15 minutes to the flight departure. I complained to the front desk. They apologized and offered us a VIP ride straight to the terminal. When we got there the driver informed us that the plane was still there and we were able to board. We ended up sitting 8 hours at the the airport, as it turned out there was supposedly some problems with the bathroom on board and that was the reason for the delay. And if I remember correctly my passport was also going to expire the next day! I was lucky.
I'm really enjoying your videos. I'm a traveler, and I recently moved to Hawaii from FL. I'm flying from HI to Italy in May with a 12-hour time change and almost 19 hours in the air. I've gotten lots of good suggestions, so thanks.
Great video! For the most part I pack carry on only when I travel. The exception to this is when we go international for the Christmas Markets. For those trips I check an empty case so I have room for all of treasures I find!

Just a suggestion is to also ask the crew if there is some cool interesting places to go or eat! We all seem to know the Best and reasonable eating places close to center of big cities in all of the World! We know where the grocery stores are and usually don’t mind sharing❤️🥰. We just returned from Europe this past weekend. I would like to pass on a couple of tips. First of all, if you use a credit card, Visa worked fine for us in Netherlands, France, Germany, & Switzerland BUT Master Card didn’t for us and we tried it numerous times. Thankfully, I’d put in our Visa. Another thing is to take some thank you notes and maybe some chocolate bars or gift card for a Starbucks to give to your flight attendant, especially if you’re going on a long flight. It is appreciated. You don’t have to sign your name but could put your seat number as your signature.
On a recent international flight I bought ten $10 Starbucks gift cards and they handed them out to the crew after we took off. Every flight attendant came to my seat and VERY sincerely thanked me. It was the least I could do for them and I enjoyed doing it.
Hi! The tip I’ve used from your channel, I used three socks on a loose but not easily removed shoes. Every time I would walk thru the TSA check line I would discard the socks till I’m left with one. My feet always get cold anyway so doubling the socks didn’t bother me. It bothered me more if I’m putting on my shoes back with a dirty sock. But that’s just me😁
Oh yes, I’m flying from Canada to Portugal tomorrow 😁. One backpack (carry on size) and one checked carry on. Solo traveler, but I wanted extra space to bring back port wine and azulejos. Compression socks are a must on long haul flights! Check out Cole Haan shoes for light and comfy shoes, but size up a half size because they run a little narrow.

I just got back from Iceland and packed carry on only for the first time ever thanks to many of your tips! Just a FYI: the rose gold passport holder set off the alarm when going through the screener. Couldn’t figure out why the alarm kept beeping until the screener asked if she could hold it. No a/c in Iceland (they don’t need it!) and the windows in our hotel wouldn’t open so I wish I had eliminated some clothing in my suitcase to make room for a portable fan. I slept horribly because it was so hot & stuffy! Also….flying out of the US our TSA approved suddenly disappeared from the boarding pass on our phones, causing a lot of confusion and waiting in the wrong lines. No idea why but it made me flustered! Luckily I was prepared with my liquid bag. Also…I tested negative in Iceland to re-enter the U.S. but tested positive the day after I returned (VERY mild symptoms). We were lucky but in retrospect we should have had our back up plan in place. I would suggest packing a rapid test to use before the official test so you would be able to make your own arrangements. And make sure your trip insurance covers Covid! Thanks for all you do - fabulous tips and tricks as well as products that are fabulous!
A checked bag (the size of a carry-on) only because it will be full of stuff that my daughter has asked me to bring for her, her husband and 2 kids from the US. All my stuff will be in the carry-on suitcase that will be in the cabin. She has a washer/dryer machine.
One tip for people flying into an EU country. If your plane is delayed you may be entitled to compensation. It's on a sliding scale & airlines don't like telling you this. My daughter & I last year our flight from London to Norway was delayed by 4 hours. We got about £200 back each & our flight were only about £80 return. Took a few weeks but worth it. A friend had a delayed flight to France this summer & also applied for compensation & got it.
Things I love about your channel: 1) your content is excellent, 2) how excited you are about organisational features in luggage, 3) how so many more people are discovering it!!!! And 4) that hilarious photo with your kid in the back seat. I know I’ve said it before but I always laugh.
Here’s one for people in electric wheelchairs that I found out the hard way in the US this past Sunday if you’re going to a country where the power wattage is different remember to bring the right step up/ down converter I brought the wrong one and couldn’t charge my chair for 3 days it was almost a huge disaster but a family friend hooked me up with what I needed!

Shoes off ,after our layover in Norway we had to do security,I accidentally walked thru the body scanner with my purse still on! but no shoes off! Then going home Heathrow to Denmark no security check in Copenhagen!right to the gate! Traveling internationally is some work,but I learned so much,thanks for your hard work.

I travel a lot and recently moved all my cloud files to my iPad instead of taking my laptop… recently when leaving Costa Rica I held up a line for at least 15 mins getting my laptop out for TSA… I swore then no more. The iPad and iPhone fit in my carry on purse tote rather than having an extra laptop bag and the extra weight. 3 trips later it was the best decision.
These tips are helpful, thanks for sharing. Level8 Roadrunner looks like a great bag, however, it is 8.9 lbs! I love the front pocket, but it adds over a pound from its regular bag. The materials are excellent, but the additional weight is causing hesitation.
That weight is way too high. I want to be able to comfortably carry my bag up stairs, etc. It is hard to stay under 20lbs if your bag empty weighs almost 9 lbs.

This is my favorite hack and truly a lifesaver…..when having to use a public restroom in a foreign country you should ALWAYS bring 1) change for the attendant, you need her money to get toilet paper and paper towels, you my also have to “pay” to get into the stall with coins in a coin slot. 2) ALWAYS BRING YOUR OWN TOILET PAPER…… I take a roll that is almost done from the hotel room, remove the cardboard tube and smoosh it flat to slip into your day bag. Many times there is none to be found anywhere and there may not be an attendant. But please remember to pay the attendant even if you bring your own. She IS trying to earn a living!
Carry a bunch of photocopies of the photo page of your passport. Many countries require hotels to keep copies of this page. If you can give them a copy yourself, you are not going to have to turn your passport over to strangers - it can take them hours to copy and return them if the front desk is busy. I keep my passport in a distinctive passport cover. This prevents it from being picked up accidentally by someone else, and reduces the probability of deliberate theft as most opportunist thieves like to be able to claim an accidental mistake if they are caught.
Can you do a how to pack a hard shell suitcase, without compression cubes. Both packing cube and no cubes at all would be great. I have issues packing mine.
Be very careful about packing snacks if flying to Australia or New Zealand - you need to declare ALL food on arrival -and will only be allowed to bring in items which are commercially packaged. And absolutely no fruit or vegetables

I'm planning a trip to Europe next year and you have given every tip I need. I was having a hard time deciding which travel case to choose from but now I'm set on the Level8 bag, as it has everything I need according to your recommendations and it's dimensions are perfect for carry on. Quick question, what do you recommend when you have to travel with a CPAP device. It does have it's own case. They do have small travel devices but they are super expensive! The case should fit under the seat but I was just wondering if you had any tips for this situation. Hi Sam. CPAP does not count as a bag to the TSA or the airline yay! You can use a j-hook to attach it just for easier carrying, but most have the strap to fit over your suitcase handles. Pack it in the overhead bin or under the seat as it does not count as a third bag. The TSA may want to open it but I have never seen that. My mom travels with one.
My husband has one and TSA always goes through it (swab it, etc.). It's annoying but he's used to it, and yes, it doesn't count as a carry-on or personal item. Our teenaged son is usually the one who gets through security first and ends up waiting on us!
I love your channel! We have always checked luggage, but not anymore! We are going to Italy in the fall for 12 days. So we decided to try out the carry-on only for a recent trip to Maine. It was wonderful not having to wait for our luggage at baggage claim. Zipped straight to car rental and started our vacation! We will use carry-on only for our Italy trip. For me, using small little pots for my shampoo, conditioner, skin care products and toothpaste worked out great as I could carry more products in my essentials bag.
Great tips - I love your videos! If you are planning to use trains or local metro (we always do), know which direction your destination is. It is so easy to get onto the wrong train if you do not know which direction you are headed.
I'm fairly new to your vlog. I love all the hacks and tips you give. One that I haven't heard yet is for people traveling abroad. It is best to travel at least two days prior to a cruise when departing from the USA being that you arrive the next day, the extra day gives you peace of mind for any fly delays.

I’m flying to Australia in about 6 weeks, staying 28 days, and I’m not checking a bag. I’m choosing clothes that will fit in my carry on, plus I’m taking an under seat bag that will hold an outfit, meds, makeup and electronics. I’m staying with friends, so can wash clothes. These tip videos are great.

I packed in a carry-on for my 16 day British Isles trip. I also had backpack then checked my carry on when I returned. Can't wait to again travel international. I LOVE the neck pillow. Love the bloopers too.

I had to laugh. You're pretty funny. (So I subscribed). I travel internationally (yes, even during Covid). I have family in the EU. My grandkids are growing fast so I can't wait too long between trips. 1. I agree that one has to get to the airport 3 hours before the flight. I've had TSA take forever (even with TSA pre-check) and I've gotten threw in minute. It just gives us more time to lounge around, check out a new restaurant. take a nap, etc. And coming back to the US, there is no TSA pre-check. The lines can be long and there may be multiple gates to get through. For instance, the Reykjavik airport took forever for connecting flights. 2. Wear comfy shoes that can kick off and stylish but comfy clothes. I abhor pajamas and slippers. (Are people in kindergarten??!!) 3. Go to the bathroom every chance you get. I've 67n years old and that 15 minutes after take-off can seem forever when you've been hydrating. Keep up the tips. I always like to see what ideas other people have to share from packing to getting through the airports. Thanks

I LOVE Vionic insoles! Also their sandal with adjustable straps and flip flops. (My arch is too high for their shoes.) I get a cute men's Cedar Crest boot or lace-up shoe, and just pop the insoles in. Just bring your insoles along when shoe shopping to make sure they and the foot fit in. Excellent tips & hints.
I was able to take the labels off my medicine bottles, put one per card on an index card and put them in my passport cover. All the info for my meds is right there if needed.
Just got back after a 2 1/2 week European vacation…and I was more organized and prepared thanks to your videos beforehand! THANK YOU💜💛 -The liquids bag was not an issue through two international airports, & returning to the US! I did have a quart ziploc rolled up in the bottoms in case security had issue with it. Really liked the lite weight Tripped cosmetic bag! -I used the backpack you recommended on Amazon (grey and black); great choice and LOVED being hands free. Also able to slip my Travelon crossbody purse in it until I needed it. I do feel it’s a little too heavy in itself and am looking for a lighter weight backpack option. -Love my hard sided Olympia suitcase, (I checked it). It worked SOOO well & held up going up train steps, down cobblestone paths, up and down curbs. (I was not gentle with it!🤣) -I did use a small Samonsite Lite Air 16” under seater. I won’t trade that one for anything! Great with lots of pockets!!! And the Amazon backpack has a trolley strap that fit nicely on it. Was super easy zipping around. -Wore slip on Sketchers tennis shoes through the airports, comfy and easy on & off! (Found then at Costco) ⚠️Definitely follow Laurie’s advice to pack minimally. We did use the Tide packets and did a little wash along the way, so overall I overpacked. We had to pack for warmer (80°-85°) Germany and then cooler Switzerland (55°-60°), and a quick moment in 28° mountain air 🥶🤣 BUT still could have packed less! 🙄😂 Was still grateful I packed a pair of sandals, slip on sketchers and the trail runner shoes with alllllll the walking we did! Next…researching how to pack a family of 4 for Hawaii in 2023.

I have been going between Europe and the US for over 60 years now. Enjoy your tips and would like to add my favorite, especially when traveling with your husband on a cruise! The zippered laundry bags come in many sizes, and in multi-packs at the dollar-type stores. I use them for all types of clothing and accessories. They take up no room, and when you unpack you just place them in the various drawers and shelves you have in a cabin or hotel. One can then serve as a dirty laundry bag. When using plastic bags, I always punch some holes in them, so you can push down and any air remaining will go out. Also, I decide on a color scheme for my clothing. Black, white and red or yellow come to mind. If an item does not go with anything else, I leave it at home.
I’ve learned the Golden Rule of flying while travelling. Never get on a plane thirsty, hungry or needing to go to the bathroom.

That’s my rule, too! Nothing more miserable, especially having to wait in line for the plane toilet as soon as the seatbelt light goes off.
It also applies to shopping [particularly duty-free].
The same after your flight lands and before security. You never know how long you’ll need to wait.

My husband and I just returned from a two week circle of Europe tour. I watched many of your videos before our trip and they were very informative and helpful so thank you! One thing I suggest is that if you are late arriving for your international flight due to road closures or construction (that happened to us before our return flight) find an airport employee to assist you. In our case they moved us to the front of the line or we wouldn’t have made our flight.

Yes! Could not agree more! We were in London a few years ago and the M25/was delayed due to a crash so we had to take back roads. We were literally running to the gate and ran into an employee who helped us. She took us the VIP way and, thankfully, we made the flight! 😰😰😰

Not only do you have to roll a suitcase over rough streets, you also will need to be able to carry it up and down flights of steps when using public transportation. There's not always a handy elevator. We always use metro systems, and I'm here to tell you, they can be tricky. Pack light!
Great tip for international stays. Yes and tiny elevators sometimes. But those narrow stairs are so tricky.
Go "hands free"
We just spent 8 weeks driving in France through mostly small towns. We almost never had an elevator and sometimes faced 3 flights of stairs. We transferred everything we needed for the night into a smaller carry-on and left the bigger bag locked in the car. Never had a problem with anything being stolen out of the car.
yes! And in some Paris hotels, the elevators are really skinny. Def don't pack a wide suitcase. (One person and bag up at a time).
I was taught years ago that if you can't lift and carry all your luggage for 500m then it's too heavy. Lots of steps in subways/metro and cobbles. Buy toiletries at destination, saves leakage, weight and hassle.
I was in London in March and things went rather smoothly for us! As Laurie suggested, arriving early for the airport is critical and will make your trip less stressful. Another tip….we arranged departure Covid tests the day after we arrived so we wouldn’t have to rush last minute. That gave me much needed peace of mind and I could enjoy my time in London without worry.

Also (and my wife doesn't like this), I use disposable clothes for long flights and travel day - I had an still nice Nautica button down that had a fray on the collar and an older pair of socks, so I wore them then threw it out at the destination...
When I'm on holiday I have no intentions of doing laundry !
100% agree with a food tour on your first day. Before I had the budget for food tours, I would do a hop-on/hop-off bus tour. Both help you get familiar with the area and figure out where you might want to go back to.

Hi Laurie, Thank you so much for the various tips. This is my contribution...the new 'laundry sheet/strips can be cut up and used in the gallon zip lock bags for laundry on the go. The brand I bough was called Tru-Earth, but there are others. The sheets are like 2 in x 3 in., totally dissolve in hot water.

We recently returned from a trip to Tuscany flying out of Florence to Amsterdam and then Atlanta. The best advice I can give you is to expect delays, delays, delays. The problem with staffing is world wide. Even if we had chosen to carry on our luggage, we were still required to stand in line for 2 1/2 hours to check into our international flight. No one was allowed to check in online, so that made for a huge mess! There were only two agents checking in 4 to 5 international flights at one time. We had travel insurance and that would be the best advice I would give anyone. Since we almost missed our flight in Amsterdam to head back to the states, we were confident that we could just easily spend the night and not have to pay extra.
Another thing I need to mention is about the requirement to test before arriving home. In Europe, apparently tests are not as widely available, so the best advice I could give you is to make a reservation for the day before you leave so you don’t have to worry about finding a test.

I saw multiple travel vloggers talking about the mess in Amsterdam this past weekend. We’re heading through there twice in the next month and not looking forward to it. We had fairly long delays there in December. We did buy travel insurance for this trip, knowing the probability of delays or getting quarantined are pretty high now.
Regarding testing to come back to the states-should we get tested in Europe, or take our own tests, and get it proctored through emed?

@@LweissTTU you can do either. If you do the call one, you need to have the test with you when you leave home. Just make sure your phone can call internationally or you won’t be able to use your personal cell phone to call back to testing location in the States.
Great tips! Heads up - just came back from London, and had my iPad stolen from the plastic baskets that you put everything in to go through security! Jacket, purse, shoes, iPad all had to go in separate baskets, and then they go on the conveyor belt while you are going through the metal detector. When I got through, all the baskets were there, but no iPad. The very helpful police told me that sadly it happens all the time. Also, even though my liquids were in a clear bag, we were all told to empty them and use the bags they provide, and I did hear people complaining! It was no big deal. Also, I took quite a bit of cash with me, and hardly used any. London is practically a cash free zone - everything is done by tapping your card - it never leaves your sight (someone we need to start doing here), and is so quick and efficient. But make sure you have a credit/debit card that has a chip. Also, all bookings for theater, zoo, entrance to attractions, etc, are done on line, and you need to have your phone/confirmation email readily accessible as you show this to the staff. No physical tickets were issued. I thought it was great, but I image for someone not very computer savvy, it could cause some anxiety.

@@TravelTipsbyLaurie I don’t think so - as you load the bins then put them on the belt and then have to walk away to go through the metal detector. I suppose you could try and watch but the conveyor belt was a curved one so that would be tricky. Fortunately everything was backed up and in the Cloud and I didn’t use the iPad to do any financial stuff. Just very annoying-but the police were wonderful!
I had a similar experience at JFK. Now, I leave my iPad and laptop in my bag and let them search afterwards. The time is worth my iPad, Mac book etc. I usually get searched anyway,

We were in Munich 3 weeks ago and in some of the sites and museums and on public transportation you could only use an N95 mask (not a simple surgeon's mask). I saw that that people who didn't have an N95 mask ended up buying one with their entrance ticket at a jacked up price. So it's worth packing a couple. Regulations are changing all the time in Europe so it's best be prepared.

Laurie in Paris traveling on the Metro someone cut the bottom of my cross body bag & stole my passport. Because I had a copy of my passport with barcode in my suitcase I was able to go to the American embassy & they helped me get another one issued in 24 hours. This tip that you just shared is invaluable.

Loctote bag is what I’ve always use whenever I’m in other country. Blades won’t go through and it also has RFID. Very convenient and will give you peace of mind.
Wow! That's one of the reasons I paid extra to get one of the passport cards, that way I can leave the passport in the hotel safe, and still have official ID on me. But I did the same - photocopied the passport (just re-did it today, to include the barcode, which I hadn't done before, thanks to Laurie's tip!), keep a copy in each bag, along with copies of vaccine card.
I leave my passport in my room. I know there are differing opinions on this though.
I was away on an international trip when you posted this but from my experience the most important thing to pack is PATIENCE. In Amsterdam we had requested a wheelchair for my BFF which the airline provided, but there was no one available to push it: thank heavens it was 6 a.m., because I became the “driver.” (It was actually kind of fun)
For restaurant recommendations I ask the hotel doorman for “cheap & cheerful” spots-it rarely fails!
And even though I do check a bag (1 for 19 days), your videos have helped me enormously! I actually had room this time for some lovely, mostly flat, souvenirs so thank you from the bottom of my credit limit. 😁🥰

Laurie, this is my first post, but I have enjoyed your channel for quite some time. Our family of four ("kids" are 20 and 22) just returned from a three week trip to Europe. Your tips were invaluable. We each had one carry-on and one backpack. I doubt you could convince any of us to check a bag; it made things too easy with customs, trains, stairs, walking from train stations to hotels, etc. Here are just some of your tips that really helped: COMPRESSION CUBES, Tide sink packets, split things into multiple pouches, use your backpack as an extension for your suitcase, if a top or bottom is not a "multi-tasker" do not pack it, limit the number of shoes! I know there are others, but these immediately come to mind. I would also suggest KT blister tape (saved my husbands feet in the first 3 days), and to pack one quart ziploc bags for liquids when returning home. The quart size ziploc bag allowed us to move through airport security in both Venice and London (the quart size was close enough to a liter that they did not question the size). We did use our "American size" liquids bag to travel TO Europe, and as the trip progressed, we had less liquids and would move them to smaller containers/jars which we were then able to fit into the smaller quart ziplocs. We also packed spare ziplocs (another tip from you) of multiple sizes and we used all of them for various purposes. While not stylish, I spent most of the trip in my Hoka Bondi 7 tennis shoes as we walked an average of 5-7 miles a day; a few days as much as 10 miles. I also packed a pair of Rieker sandals that were good for days with less than 5 miles. However, we were very fortunate as we did not have a day where our shoes were at risk of getting wet. Just got back from an 8 night trip to Scotland/Ireland. My Mother & I did carry on and personal item only. Be aware. If you travel thru Heathrow, they are extremely strict on the amount of liquids in your bag. They said I had "too many", and proceeded to move the items to their bag, just throwing the items in, instead of carefully strategically placing them in. They eventually let me have the 3 items that wouldn't fit in their 1 bag. Another in our group was not as lucky. When leaving Dublin, make sure that you use the bag that they provide, instead of your own.
Leave plenty of room when you pack for your trip, for your souvenirs. I barely was able to close my bag and keep it in the carry on size (used a luggage strap).
Next time pack “one way clothes.” I suggest socks and pjs. More room for souvenirs.

Hi Laurie! My husband and I are preparing for a trip from the US to Papua New Guinea later this year (our son, daughter-in-law & 3 granddaughters serve as missionaries to that country). LONG HAUL FLIGHTS, here we come!!! We did this 2 times before in 2012 & 2015. It’s been a while. So I have been blowing through all of your videos for tips and travel hacks. Getting through TSA is my fear in the airports and the bad people that prey upon innocent travelers is another. I really appreciate your channel. All of your videos are great and very helpful! Thank you! Here’s a travel tip for snacking. I have used powered peanut butter, PB2. You just mix it with water and you have real peanut butter. Powered peanut butter doesn’t take up precious space in your liquids bag like regular peanut butter would. Keep the videos coming! ❤️

Guess what?! Starting Sunday we no longer have to get tested to return!!! But pack enough in case of delays
I am off to Istanbul again! A reminder to those who cannot walk the distances in the airports, ask for a wheelchair when you book your flight. This saved me when there was a delay in getting my COVID test results back and there was a rush to the gate. Attendants are knowledge about about where to go and they go very quickly. In Paris this helped when there was a gate change (I did not hear it!).

I used to travel a lot when I lived in the Middle East. Best tips - use baggies lots, make a packing list and keep it in your suitcase. My partners said book every third line. Having now been back home in Australia for 10 years and going to travel to Europe in 6 months your videos have been very useful. Thanks.

My return through Heathrow was fairly simple. The only question I got was about my antigen test for re-entering the U.S. Strangely, the one thing I got hung up on for security in both directions was my jewelry case. I had too much metal for them to see through on the Xray. Keep your jewelry easy to access.

I have been traveling with the Cabeau neck pillow for years between Orlando and Australia. However, I spend a little more and get the one with vents because it is cooler and less restrictive (and I don’t get hot).

For my 2weeks to Ghana in a carryon, i turned my pillow to the front, under my chin. It helped where my head did not flop forward as usual. Also packed my liquids in balloons. Easy to toss on my return flight. Less items in my carry-on.

Merrill’s slip ins are wonderful for travel, and Zulily carries them occasionally. They are great on cobblestones and uneven or slick surfaces. I have two pair and find I wear them more than any other shoes I own! And, I am now living in a World Heritage City in MX, so cobblestones everywhere!!!

I travel with a partner. #1 We email each other a photo of our passports AND front and back of credit cards we’re carrying. If the credit card/debit card is stolen, the other person has the cc number and the phone #’s of the banks. #2 We find it interesting to try to find things in local stores that we may need. In Barcelona, we bought socks. We look for toothpaste, licorice, different snacks that cant be found in the US, etc. Generally, we like to “shop like a native”. Also, thrift stores in other countries are very interesting. Small thrifted items can be great souvenirs/memories. I’m looking forward to my next adventure. Thanks for your tips!
How fun! My only problem with thrifting is I usually want to wash the item. Have you done a Rupit tour with Spanish Trails outside of Barcelona? We’ve done it twice!
Thank you for these very helpful tips! In addition to carry-on size requirements, be sure to know the permissible weights. Some airlines are quite restrictive. For example, on Lufthansa, your carry-on can weigh no more than 8kg - that is just over 17.5 pounds. I prefer to travel only with carry-on, but that kind of weight restriction makes it very difficult - at least for me.
This. International airlines are not as forgiving as US airlines!

These days, many international airlines restrict carry on weight to 7 kgs (15 lbs) - and they may very well weigh them and make you check them if they are over. Some restrict the personal item to a smallish purse/handbag. Some include the weight of the personal item as part of the 76 kgs, and some won’t allow a personal item at all. Check the rules for any airline you are thinking of using to get the best setup for you.
Oh my! I had no idea! I've spent this week minimizing clothes to get all my stuff into 1 carry-on roller and 1 personal item backpack, using so many of your ideas. I was so proud of myself to get 16 days worth for a 2 week cruise plus time in Southampton into these two bags. I weighed the carry-on this morning and it's 30.8 lbs. Now you're saying some airlines won't allow more than 15-17 lbs carr-on? What airlines and what locations have you experienced this? I'm trying to follow the news advice not to check bags into Heathrow. HELP!
@@mjb9176 A quicker answer might be which ones don’t have that limit. All the major European airlines, Lufthansa, Swissair, etc have that limit, as does Qantas & Air New Zealand, and the big Middl East Carriers Emirates, Qatar, etc. Emirates is the strictest. Some of the US-based airlines might have a higher limit for their internationals, but as none of them ever fly to and from where I need I have never explored their limits. It’s frustrating, isn’t it…. Fitting the stuff in isn’t the hard part; it’s keeping the weight down. I’m doing a trial pack right now for a month in Egypt coming up later in the year, and best I have been able to do so far is 7.3 kg, which I will probably get away with. You will not get away with the weigh you are planning.
Best bet for you is to list all the airlines that go where you want, check their limits online, and talk to some of their reps about weight limits. One advantage for you flying out of the US is some airlines have negotiated a different weight limit for travellers departing certain specific countries. You need to do a lot of online checking, or talk to a good travel agent. Also enquire about the size limit of your personal item. Always a good idea with a personal item is to have your true valuables and documents in a small secure purse you can quickly pull out of your personal item if they say it is oversized and must be gate checked.
I bought that neck rest you recommended because of your review of it and have it to this day. I've never had to use it yet but you never know. It's super plush. Thank you for your tips and tricks and fun videos. By the way I noticed we have the same Conair curling iron. Lol don't see that one often haha. Loved the bloopers you add at the end now 😂. A couple of things I like to do. Bring an empty water bottle though security. Then fill it in the airport. That way if you are thirsty or need to take pills, you don’t have to wait for the flight attendants to bring you something to drink.
To prevent blisters, roll dry devolved the spots that might get rubbed by a shoe or sandal. You even do the bottom of yiur feet. And it doesn’t show. I also pack blister bandages as a backup. You can find them in any drug store. That way, you can still walk around even if you do get a blister.
Snack size ziploc bags are great for jewelry, pills, vitamins etc.
I carry an iPad to watch shows, play games, read books and look up information at my destination. Be sure to keep your charger and cable handy for when you are on the plane because your battery will run down.
One last comment about souvenirs. While this is very personal, I like to avoid anything that might break or spill. I like to buy pot holders and tea towels to help me remember my trip. They are soft, easy to squish, and I use them when I het home

A suggestion made with love as a UK person with beloved US family- Americans talk a lot more loudly and clearly than we do and it means you stand out more. My US family that has visited the UK a lot knows to turn the volume down. My US family that hasn’t visited a lot, didn’t realise. And yes, I know it works the other way around for us when visiting the US.

I’m with you on the anti theft purses!! I always take my slash resistant bag when we are sightseeing. Whether in the states or internationally. I’ve heard too many horror stories about the strap or bottom of the bag being cut. Travel insurance and travel health insurance will save you time and money. My husband’s last trip was horrible. His first leg took off late and we thought he was going to miss his connection in Denver, but that plane had mechanical problems. He landed in Denver and by the time another plane got there the crew timed out. So because I had bought trip insurance he was booked on a flight for the next morning. He was flying in for our youngest daughter’s wedding. So I was dealing with two very upset people until he landed in Oklahoma City!! 😳🙄😂 well it’s funny now!!

@@the-red-ghost You have to make sure that brand's bag says slash resistant (for the straps). They're not slash proof, but slash-resistant is better than zero resistance imo.
@@the-red-ghost the bag I have is actually slash resistant. I made sure of that after I bought it. If I’m going to pay 50+ for a bag, I make sure it does what it says it will do or I return it. I returned 2 bags for it not doing what it was stated to do. Yes the companies were not happy about me slashing the bag, but I got my money back.
@@the-red-ghost, Travelon bags with the slash proof straps are guaranteed. They have a mesh metal core inside the strap to prevent them from being cut.
One thing I do if I am on public transport anywhere is know the name / number of the stop BEFORE the one I am getting off at - that way once we reach there I know the next time we decelerate I need to get gathered up and off!

Just went through security at DFW for a flight on Air Canada. I had carefully packed my liquids in my backpack after watching your videos. We are TSA pre check - I did not have to remove my shoes, open my backpack, show my liquids bag or separate my electronics!

The new carryon looks awesome. I also liked your little security purse. Nowadays with lack of staff at airports, you may want to get to the airports even 4-5 hours ahead of time.. Especially for leaving parts of Europe. When I left Portugal in January, there were only like 6 guys doing passport control for a hall filled with 500+ people. Also pack patience for delays. My most recent trip to Europe every single flight (except for the last flight home) was delayed.

Ahhh delayed flights! I had a very close call experience with that long ago. We were in Amsterdam traveling back to the U.S. in 1984. We requested a wake-up call from the hotel's front desk. They failed to wake us up. When I awoke it was maybe 10-15 minutes to the flight departure. I complained to the front desk. They apologized and offered us a VIP ride straight to the terminal. When we got there the driver informed us that the plane was still there and we were able to board. We ended up sitting 8 hours at the the airport, as it turned out there was supposedly some problems with the bathroom on board and that was the reason for the delay.
And if I remember correctly my passport was also going to expire the next day! I was lucky.
I'm really enjoying your videos. I'm a traveler, and I recently moved to Hawaii from FL. I'm flying from HI to Italy in May with a 12-hour time change and almost 19 hours in the air. I've gotten lots of good suggestions, so thanks.

Great video! For the most part I pack carry on only when I travel. The exception to this is when we go international for the Christmas Markets. For those trips I check an empty case so I have room for all of treasures I find!

Just a suggestion is to also ask the crew if there is some cool interesting places to go or eat! We all seem to know the Best and reasonable eating places close to center of big cities in all of the World! We know where the grocery stores are and usually don’t mind sharing❤️🥰. We just returned from Europe this past weekend. I would like to pass on a couple of tips. First of all, if you use a credit card, Visa worked fine for us in Netherlands, France, Germany, & Switzerland BUT Master Card didn’t for us and we tried it numerous times. Thankfully, I’d put in our Visa.
Another thing is to take some thank you notes and maybe some chocolate bars or gift card for a Starbucks to give to your flight attendant, especially if you’re going on a long flight. It is appreciated. You don’t have to sign your name but could put your seat number as your signature.

On a recent international flight I bought ten $10 Starbucks gift cards and they handed them out to the crew after we took off. Every flight attendant came to my seat and VERY sincerely thanked me. It was the least I could do for them and I enjoyed doing it.

Hi! The tip I’ve used from your channel, I used three socks on a loose but not easily removed shoes. Every time I would walk thru the TSA check line I would discard the socks till I’m left with one. My feet always get cold anyway so doubling the socks didn’t bother me. It bothered me more if I’m putting on my shoes back with a dirty sock. But that’s just me😁

Oh yes, I’m flying from Canada to Portugal tomorrow 😁. One backpack (carry on size) and one checked carry on. Solo traveler, but I wanted extra space to bring back port wine and azulejos. Compression socks are a must on long haul flights! Check out Cole Haan shoes for light and comfy shoes, but size up a half size because they run a little narrow.

I just got back from Iceland and packed carry on only for the first time ever thanks to many of your tips!
Just a FYI: the rose gold passport holder set off the alarm when going through the screener. Couldn’t figure out why the alarm kept beeping until the screener asked if she could hold it.
No a/c in Iceland (they don’t need it!) and the windows in our hotel wouldn’t open so I wish I had eliminated some clothing in my suitcase to make room for a portable fan. I slept horribly because it was so hot & stuffy!
Also….flying out of the US our TSA approved suddenly disappeared from the boarding pass on our phones, causing a lot of confusion and waiting in the wrong lines. No idea why but it made me flustered! Luckily I was prepared with my liquid bag.
Also…I tested negative in Iceland to re-enter the U.S. but tested positive the day after I returned (VERY mild symptoms). We were lucky but in retrospect we should have had our back up plan in place. I would suggest packing a rapid test to use before the official test so you would be able to make your own arrangements.
And make sure your trip insurance covers Covid!

A checked bag (the size of a carry-on) only because it will be full of stuff that my daughter has asked me to bring for her, her husband and 2 kids from the US. All my stuff will be in the carry-on suitcase that will be in the cabin. She has a washer/dryer machine.

One tip for people flying into an EU country. If your plane is delayed you may be entitled to compensation. It's on a sliding scale & airlines don't like telling you this. My daughter & I last year our flight from London to Norway was delayed by 4 hours. We got about £200 back each & our flight were only about £80 return. Took a few weeks but worth it. A friend had a delayed flight to France this summer & also applied for compensation & got it.
I used the cross body bag on our recent trip to Scotland
It held everything I need during the day and looked nice

Here’s one for people in electric wheelchairs that I found out the hard way in the US this past Sunday if you’re going to a country where the power wattage is different remember to bring the right step up/ down converter I brought the wrong one and couldn’t charge my chair for 3 days it was almost a huge disaster but a family friend hooked me up with what I needed!

I found it interesting when leaving Newark Int. Shoes off ,after our layover in Norway we had to do security,I accidentally walked thru the body scanner with my purse still on! but no shoes off!
Then going home Heathrow to Denmark no security check in Copenhagen!right to the gate!

I travel a lot and recently moved all my cloud files to my iPad instead of taking my laptop… recently when leaving Costa Rica I held up a line for at least 15 mins getting my laptop out for TSA… I swore then no more. The iPad and iPhone fit in my carry on purse tote rather than having an extra laptop bag and the extra weight. 3 trips later it was the best decision.
Also with the iPad, my iPhone can be a hot spot for the iPad making me feel more secure with my WiFi connection… laptop is on public WiFi…

These tips are helpful, thanks for sharing. Level8 Roadrunner looks like a great bag, however, it is 8.9 lbs! I love the front pocket, but it adds over a pound from its regular bag. The materials are excellent, but the additional weight is causing hesitation.
We do not have to worry about weight in the US so it works great. I had to have that outer pocket.
That weight is way too high. I want to be able to comfortably carry my bag up stairs, etc. It is hard to stay under 20lbs if your bag empty weighs almost 9 lbs.

This is my favorite hack and truly a lifesaver…..when having to use a public restroom in a foreign country you should ALWAYS bring 1) change for the attendant, you need her money to get toilet paper and paper towels, you my also have to “pay” to get into the stall with coins in a coin slot. 2) ALWAYS BRING YOUR OWN TOILET PAPER…… I take a roll that is almost done from the hotel room, remove the cardboard tube and smoosh it flat to slip into your day bag. Many times there is none to be found anywhere and there may not be an attendant. But please remember to pay the attendant even if you bring your own. She IS trying to earn a living!

Carry a bunch of photocopies of the photo page of your passport. Many countries require hotels to keep copies of this page. If you can give them a copy yourself, you are not going to have to turn your passport over to strangers - it can take them hours to copy and return them if the front desk is busy.
I keep my passport in a distinctive passport cover. This prevents it from being picked up accidentally by someone else, and reduces the probability of deliberate theft as most opportunist thieves like to be able to claim an accidental mistake if they are caught.

Be very careful about packing snacks if flying to Australia or New Zealand - you need to declare ALL food on arrival -and will only be allowed to bring in items which are commercially packaged. And absolutely no fruit or vegetables

Hey Laurie! Hope all is well! Thank you so much for this super detailed info session! This is one stop shopping for international travel for sure! I'm planning a trip to Europe next year and you have given every tip I need. I was having a hard time deciding which travel case to choose from but now I'm set on the Level8 bag, as it has everything I need according to your recommendations and it's dimensions are perfect for carry on. Quick question, what do you recommend when you have to travel with a CPAP device. It does have it's own case. They do have small travel devices but they are super expensive! The case should fit under the seat but I was just wondering if you had any tips for this situation. Hi Sam. CPAP does not count as a bag to the TSA or the airline yay! You can use a j-hook to attach it just for easier carrying, but most have the strap to fit over your suitcase handles. Pack it in the overhead bin or under the seat as it does not count as a third bag. The TSA may want to open it but I have never seen that. My mom travels with one.

@@meman6964 Yes, it must block something. My ground coffee, even when in the gray bins, always has to be squeezed and touched.
My husband has one and TSA always goes through it (swab it, etc.). It's annoying but he's used to it, and yes, it doesn't count as a carry-on or personal item. Our teenaged son is usually the one who gets through security first and ends up waiting on us!
I love your channel! We have always checked luggage, but not anymore! We are going to Italy in the fall for 12 days. So we decided to try out the carry-on only for a recent trip to Maine. It was wonderful not having to wait for our luggage at baggage claim. Zipped straight to car rental and started our vacation! We will use carry-on only for our Italy trip. For me, using small little pots for my shampoo, conditioner, skin care products and toothpaste worked out great as I could carry more products in my essentials bag.
Great tips - I love your videos! If you are planning to use trains or local metro (we always do), know which direction your destination is. It is so easy to get onto the wrong train if you do not know which direction you are headed.

I'm fairly new to your vlog. I love all the hacks and tips you give. One that I haven't heard yet is for people traveling abroad. It is best to travel at least two days prior to a cruise when departing from the USA being that you arrive the next day, the extra day gives you peace of mind for any fly delays.

I’m flying to Australia in about 6 weeks, staying 28 days, and I’m not checking a bag. I’m choosing clothes that will fit in my carry on, plus I’m taking an under seat bag that will hold an outfit, meds, makeup and electronics. I’m staying with friends, so can wash clothes. These tip videos are great.

My grandkids are growing fast so I can't wait too long between trips. 1. I agree that one has to get to the airport 3 hours before the flight. I've had TSA take forever (even with TSA pre-check) and I've gotten threw in minute. It just gives us more time to lounge around, check out a new restaurant. take a nap, etc. And coming back to the US, there is no TSA pre-check. The lines can be long and there may be multiple gates to get through. For instance, the Reykjavik airport took forever for connecting flights. 2. Wear comfy shoes that can kick off and stylish but comfy clothes. I abhor pajamas and slippers. (Are people in kindergarten??!!) 3. Go to the bathroom every chance you get. I've 67n years old and that 15 minutes after take-off can seem forever when you've been hydrating. Keep up the tips. I always like to see what ideas other people have to share from packing to getting through the airports. Thanks

I LOVE Vionic insoles! Also their sandal with adjustable straps and flip flops. (My arch is too high for their shoes.) I get a cute men's Cedar Crest boot or lace-up shoe, and just pop the insoles in. Just bring your insoles along when shoe shopping to make sure they and the foot fit in.

I was able to take the labels off my medicine bottles, put one per card on an index card and put them in my passport cover. All the info for my meds is right there if needed.

Just got back after a 2 1/2 week European vacation…and I was more organized and prepared thanks to your videos beforehand! THANK YOU💜💛
-The liquids bag was not an issue through two international airports, & returning to the US! I did have a quart ziploc rolled up in the bottoms in case security had issue with it. Really liked the lite weight Tripped cosmetic bag!
-I used the backpack you recommended on Amazon (grey and black); great choice and LOVED being hands free. Also able to slip my Travelon crossbody purse in it until I needed it. I do feel it’s a little too heavy in itself and am looking for a lighter weight backpack option.
-Love my hard sided Olympia suitcase, (I checked it). It worked SOOO well & held up going up train steps, down cobblestone paths, up and down curbs. (I was not gentle with it!🤣)
-I did use a small Samonsite Lite Air 16” under seater. I won’t trade that one for anything! Great with lots of pockets!!! And the Amazon backpack has a trolley strap that fit nicely on it. Was super easy zipping around.
-Wore slip on Sketchers tennis shoes through the airports, comfy and easy on & off! (Found then at Costco)
⚠️Definitely follow Laurie’s advice to pack minimally. We did use the Tide packets and did a little wash along the way, so overall I overpacked. We had to pack for warmer (80°-85°) Germany and then cooler Switzerland (55°-60°), and a quick moment in 28° mountain air 🥶🤣 BUT still could have packed less! 🙄😂
Was still grateful I packed a pair of sandals, slip on sketchers and the trail runner shoes with alllllll the walking we did!
Next…researching how to pack a family of 4 for Hawaii in 2023.
