I am 70yrs of age, I want YOU - Gary to know that I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the work you do. If only people would listen? If only governments were honest and had the balls to listen to YOU and others. Thank You Gary, take care soak up support and hold on to friends... Hold on tight to your dreams... I have been fighting the fight against inequality all my working life - it does have a profound impact upon a person... but we must simply remember we must do the Right Thing.

I’m 63. My dad worked all his life for a very small amount, quite often working two jobs, so that he could provide a tiny amount for his family, and had to retire at the age of 52 because of ilI-health. He died at the age of 64, just a few months before the birth of his first grandchild.
He also fought all his life for equality. This was 1994 and things have got much, much worse I’m afraid.
Keep going with this Gary: we need you and others like you.

Gary very correctly identifies what's wrong with the economy and society. It's obvious when you think about it, Trickle down was a lie, Thatcher should have called it trickle away. What to do about it is more difficult. All that wealth buys power, it buys governments and anyone who tries to stop it or change it is shot down, see Jeremy Corbyn. I have spent a life time pushing democratic socialism and it hasn't worked. There is nothing wrong with socialism it's democracy that doesn't work anymore. Keep up the good work Gary but if I can ask one thing of you it's this, we now know what the problem is can you work on how to fix it? I'm all out of ideas.

I came here at 17, got a crappy degree, got myself in debt for it and now been working here for 5 years saving for that first house....yes that "British Dream". 5 years of working, saving money - not going on holidays, not buying myself things and staying at home with parents till 30 just to be able to afford to be a slave to a mortgage one day. So the lesser value of acting selfish seems more appealing because it’s immediate and obvious. The net effect of course is the detriment of society. The unfortunate reality is that, in the current status quo, it’s challenging for individuals to break free from the mainstream tide. True change is often sparked by seeing positive transformations around us; until then, stagnation prevails. However, platforms like "Gary Economics" provide a valuable opportunity for us to strategically position ourselves for the challenges that lie ahead.

Hi Gary. I come from Newham and grew up in dirt poor. Saved by the welfare state, we got a council house when we were flooded out of our private rented flat - long story. My dad had ambitions for me to be a teacher or a nurse; the highest ambition for a girl in the 1970s! I found it really hard to leave friends behind and baulked against it but I buckled down and became a teacher. I found I had a small talent for the work and a big burning desire to give kids opportunity and rich experiences. I was a headteacher in Newham and Redbridge for 25 years, a teacher for 39 years. Thank you for what you’re doing. The days of kids like me being saved by free uni and council housing has gone. We have the fight of our lives ahead as society begins to collapse. The only way forward is radical transformation for the greater good.

Hi Carol, I'm also from Newham and unfortunately there wasn't any suitable council housing left for people like me because it has all been taken by non-natives. Perhaps in your role as a teacher you also realised that the people replacing the native population overwhelmingly changed the fabric of the society. That using immigration to prop up a failing service economy puts immense strain on council housing and social services. Also, that changing the demographics of a population makes the people less divided and able to tackle the systemic issues that make the average person poorer. Gary doesn't address this because he's a traitor to the indigenous people and wants to entertain endless kebab shops full of people who shouldn't morally or legally be here

Plenty of people became economic migrants and moved to the city to do very unskilled work and very poorly paid work and those were the ones who survived and didn't die on the journey, and the economy recovered in time because the government taxed the wealthy and put in place a welfare system that made the very exploitable a bit less exploitable.. but yeah i think what was needed then was the same as now tbh

Every 10 years people say this same thing. Capitalism advances and brings people out of poverty. Life gets better for everyone if you just glance back in history. There is always something to worry about or complain about.

    • @Humanity101-zp4sq
      @Humanity101-zp4sq 3 місяці тому

@@stevetaylor20 Capitalism is profligate. Resources, skills and dignity are sacrificed at the alter of the church of money. You are correct that the measured aspects of economy continue to improve, but the truth is that all that matters cannot be measured. Additionally, the metrology is changed, in order to ensure the expected. The losses endured as capitalism washes away culture and tradition for a new generation of desire and consumption are never considered, and even more rarely recorded on the balance sheet. The losses are only glimpsed when we reminisce through the rose tinted sentimentality of rememberence. It is true, amongst many 'advances', that the world has greater sanitation and that infant mortality for some is reduced, but the depths of the depravity have become deeper, more concentrated and of diminished interest to the majority. Capitalism is a conspiracy of ignorance where nobody is prepared to acknowledge the obviousness of the dysfunction. Remember that some people who work hard succeed. Forget that most who work hard will just have to keep on working hard. Not because they are less able, but simply because they are less lucky or less privileged, and less wealthy. Marx saw this happening over 100 years ago. The futile and corrupt attempts to implement his ideas since, serve as the ammunition to shoot the ideas down. The truth is that wealth inequality is unsustainable, as are many of the currently accepted paradigms of human existence. Unfortunately, it is only catastrophe which is likely to bring about meaningful change, when a 'needs based' assessment of resource distribution will necessarily evolve in order to right the imbalance.

Oh Gary this was magnificent. I am 80 now and have known relative poverty for most of my life. But for some reason I never really looked for more. Maths was never my thing, more of an artist, writer, poet, so maybe that's why. You have a brilliant mind, and more than that, a big heart. You care. and that's what is important at times like this, at any time really. The Buddhist concept of "Be Kind" needs to be spread far and wide for, as your Japanese friend said, the rich people have small hearts. Even though you had money, you were not comfortable with it, and that says everything about you. I wish you every success in all you do because you deserve it, though I know that doesn't always follow. Thank you so much for what are doing. Hey Gary. I'm a college student in America. Earlier this year I had to write a 10 page essay for school on the book 1984. I ended up writing about the economic inequality in America. This was the first time I became passionate about something school related. I learned about everything you're talking about; being from America our inequality is even worse. I became so enthralled over the severity of the situation and the fact that I had never really been aware of how bad it was. I was born in one of Africa's poorest countries, Ethiopia, but was adopted into a wealthy American family. All of this accumulated in my decision to study economics at university. I ended up dropping my economics class because of what you describe; it was all graphs and maths and had nothing to do with the actual economy. I'm now pursuing political science in the hope that I can learn enough about the political and economic systems of the world to change it. I want to fight; hopefully and maybe someday I could help you in this goal.

Basically my friends were just poor and had nothing, but were nice to me so I hung around with them. No matter how hard I tried to self destruct my own life, no matter how much trouble I got into, I still managed to get a decent job in insurance at 18 thanks to who my dad was. I did everything in my power to try and throw that job away but I was never sacked, because of my dad. Eventually around 24 years old I woke up and decided to start trying. By this time all the poor kids I was friends were drug addicts, homeless, dead, or in prison. Im under no illusion that the only reason that didn’t happen to me is because I am from a richer family. That’s why I feel passionately the gap between rich and poor needs to be closed. Get this speech played in every secondary school in the country. Adults have selective hearing, let’s start shaping the minds of the children who will listen.
    Tax the ridiculously wealthy.

Inequality is a natural outcome of fiat currency systems. Our government has spent beyond it's means and this necessitates accelerating money supply (inflation)...or default. If our money didn't exponentially devalue and the gains from productivity were shared fairly, widening inequality would be a non-issue. Gary misdiagnoses the route cause and prescribes socialism as the solution. It's remarkably misguided, you need only look to emerging economies to know how that plays out!

@@davidd4365 no, the government has not spent “beyond its means,” because that’s an arbitrary concept as far as a fiat currency goes. In a world where power shapes truth and reality - where power protects itself at the expense of others, where lies, deceit and selfishness are common trade, where decadence is rife - it's rarely good reason, honesty, or even good values that rise above it. People won't listen to that. What they do listen to, is a story. A good story. A story that has the power to capture the imagination of the collective, to inspire, to give hope, to show the power of an individual's voice in a world that overshadows the masses, in a world that grinds down the many for the few. Your story does that. For me, and for many others. We're lucky, to have individuals like you to look up to, the few that speak for the many, the ones who endure in the face of the impossible. Wisdom? Britain was once a world leader in industry, celebrated as the 'workshop of the world.' Its citizens were wealthy owners of factories, steelworks, potteries, and textile mills-a time of old money. I still have a few items stamped 'Made in England,' and they make me smile, a reminder of a bygone era.
But things changed. In the 1970s, high taxes drained wealth from citizens, while strikes and poor industrial relations disrupted the workplace. One politician famously declared, 'tax the rich until the pips squeak.' Many of Britain’s brightest workers left the country. So, what happened to that wealth and those once-great industries? Gone. And what did the government do with those taxes? Much went to propping up failing companies, with little left to stimulate real growth. Taxation, can destroy capital to start business.
Consider fibre optics. Developed in Britain to transmit voice and data, this technology underpins the internet as we know it. A single strand of fibre optic cable can carry data more efficiently than thousands of copper cables and does so without the signal degradation that would require hundreds of repeaters. Yet the British companies that pioneered this innovation have disappeared. Modern society was built on countless such breakthroughs.
The UK missed out on the tech and internet booms. Today, it seems Britain's main expertise lies in inventing new ways to tax its citizens.
Gary, talk about the rich, but are these rich industrialist in Britain? Most of the new rich are the Americans, Chinese etc... Britain's rich are lagging behind. James Dyson is worth £20bn. Compare that with the American's billionaire who are worth $200billion where that would be small change. Britain has shown contempt to James Dyson, who is a self-made man. His father dies when he was a school boy.

Guess what? They laughed it off and didn’t take me seriously…

Our economy is like a flailing fish, fighting for its life. The normal state of the U.S. economy is actually very bad. Because of this it goes into convulsive spasms fighting to grow any way it can out of desperation. Tricks, gimmicks, rule changes try to stimulate the economy >>and prevent it from falling but they only bring temporary relief to people since, when you factor in inflation we are declining.

I am just a roof tiler, a tradie struggling to make a living, and it's just getting increasingly harder. Is it possible you have the capability to pull millions of struggling people/families together, have them throw in together, and beat the banks and investment firms at their game? Not because my parents planned for that in particular, but because of the "educated ideal" where they encouraged me to do things like this. They encouraged me to learn and try new things because they had the energy and resources to let me try out who I wanted to be.

Then there's the 'tech' side of things - endless subscriptions and software as a service, overriding the fact that the marginal rate of software tends to 0 and is everywhere in the economy (think about this one for a bit - a hint: capital).
The key question here is: who gets the benefits of all of these economic 'tools'?
And secondly, what is the reasoning behind them, that proves it.
The point however is: why are the benefits not proportionally distributed to people involved - this you can use to define (in-)equality.

Secondly, consistent rules on quantitative easing / money printing (which devalues currencies) and where the money goes (like outcomes checks and service-level agreements with the public).
Thirdly, a tying of currency to real materials prices / difficult to produce asset values (think something like the gold standard), to avoid rapid asset inflation from devalued currencies and sudden speculation on needed resources - simplifying a bit here.
All of this should mean that wealth needs reasons to make more wealth - i.e. be tied to the economy of the general public (no more two-tier economy of earned vs unearned income).
      And that's about it really.

Overcome by fear and despair, they took their own lives. Those who made it through were resourceful and self-sufficient, (cooperate with your family, friends and neighbors, forget the govt) or they learned to become so. It's a mind game. “To surmount the situation of oppression, people must first critically recognise it’s causes, so that through transforming action they can create a new situation, one which makes possible the pursuit of a fuller humanity. But the struggle to be more fully human has already begun in the authentic struggle to transform the situation. Although the situation of oppression is a dehumanised and dehumanising totality affecting both the oppressors and those whom they oppress, it is the latter who must, from their stifled humanity, wage for both the struggle for a fuller humanity; the oppressor, who is himself dehumanised because he dehumanises others, is unable to lead this struggle.” - Paulo Freiré - Pedagogy of the Oppressed.

To be human is to fight against it, regardless, and give your all to avoid an outcome that may be beyond your own individual ability. To remain sane is to hold on to the hope that with your efforts, others will remain sane as well-- inspired to do the same as you.
To remain a David, having faith and confidence in what is good, righteous, and just, against a Goliath that would otherwise surely defeat you.

She just keeps right on walking
      Carrying her home
      In two carrier bags
So, how can you tell me you're lonely?
And say for you that the sun don't shine?
Let me take you by the hand
And lead you through the streets of London
I'll show you something to make you change your mind
      In the all night café
      At a quarter past eleven
      Same old man
      Sitting there on his own
      Looking at the world
Over the rim of his teacup
      Each tea lasts an hour
      And he wanders home alone
So, how can you tell me you're lonely?
Don't say for you that the sun don't shine
Let me take you by the hand
And lead you through the streets of London
Show you something to make you change your mind
Have you seen the old man
      Outside the seaman's mission?
      Memory fading with
The medal ribbons that he wears
      In our winter city
The rain cries a little pity
      For one more forgotten hero
And a world that doesn't care
So, how can you tell me you're lonely?
And say for you that the sun don't shine?
Let me take you by the hand
And lead you through the streets of London
Show you something to make you change your mind

My rent on a beachfront apartment in the city of Burgas Bulgaria is £150 a month. Type D 5 years visas are quite easy to get.
Just saying - Oh and 300 days of sunshine a year.

@@talananiyiyaya8912 YEAH the same as the UK now. I moved here before Brexit so the visa was automatic. But even now its very easy by most country standards. If you have an income or about €500 a month or you have a skill they want, and they want a lot cos its a declining population with a growing economy, or a job - and minimum wage here will pay rent on an apartment.
Dont be a snob bout the old communist-era apartment blocks - they are GREAT and they are in the best locations. You wont need a car cos the public transport is amazing and €18 a month flat rate.
My city is Burgas if yo look it up there is a T shaped thing in the water - im just to the left of that.

Not sure I understand. How does living in a van help the environment? Genuine question.

This reminded me of Benjamin Zephaniah whose heart and mind transcended his poor background and life of crime to become one of the greatest people this century. I wonder if you ever met? Very moving and utterly gripping. I am a “poor” pensioner who sometimes have my head above water and am pleased to be coping and then gets side swiped by a wave in the form of a bill. Sometimes saved by selling something, sometimes a charitable local council who btw understand better than the government who needs help with energy bills. Suddenly realised at 73 that I grew up poor and still am. Not particularly good person but do try to help others where I can. Stand up stand up don’t give up the fight. Xxxx
