Margaret's appearance was changing along with her transformation of the hoard. She was beautiful and smiling in the end. I do hope she can manage to continue and get her whole house back for that beautiful grandbaby!
We had a hoarder down the street. The windows had no blinds or curtains and you could see the trash up to the ceiling. When they cleaned that place they took so many huge containers of trash out it was amazing how much trash fit in that tiny house. I cannot imagine ever living like that. These people need so much help.
You can always tell a hoarder right from the street, without even knowing who they are. Their windows are always blocked and the tell tale spill out on to the porch, front yard, back yard and parts of the driveway and it looks like it's going to keep growing...they do need help

The emotional and psychological scars parents inflict on children last a lifetime. Wonder if Claire could made her collection more specialised and sell certain lots. Poor Graham deserves at least a few areas for himself. I shudder to think how much money she has invested into it.
It is extremely validating to see someone else write this. My mother-in-law insists parents have no bearing on how their kids turn out😂 its Infuriating having a conversation with an 80-year-old immigrant.
She's definitely not "stupid" as her father called her. She's a a public health administrator, but because of what he did to her, she can't do for herself what she does for others
Stelios is amazing. He helps the hoarders in such a gentle, understanding way. I am glad Margaret has some reclaimed space to share with her family and friends. Childhood trauma can have a lasting impact - if you haven't the tools to deal with it. Now Stelios has given her that insight and ability to process and deal with the trauma.
Can't believe how rude Margaret was to the Diva's!!! My hat is off to them for calmly leaving. I would never let someone scream at me like that...especially if I'm there to help save their life.
@Kat Gai yes this is true. Its more to cover themselves (the manufacturer) legally, and generally food can last much longer and still be totally fine. And even if its not fine, that's what we have immune systems for. Its not a guarantee of instant illness.
It really depends on the food and how out of date it is and how it was stored. Some items can be kept considerably longer than what is indicated as the expiry or best before date, and most will show it in some way when they've gone bad. You'll know if an egg or dairy has gone bad; also bread, cheese, fruits and vegetables. I personally pay no attention to expiry dates and use my sense of sight/smell to alert me if the food has gone off. You do have to be careful with: meat, as it can go off before it looks or smells bad; and canned food, which is a risk for botulism. However, canned foods can last much longer than the expiry date, but you have to look for denting, bowing etc in even newer cans.
@Kat Gai Although I agree with your point, much of the food they mentioned was almost a decade out of date and was certainly *not* looking/smelling/tasting good. Also, I wouldn't say dairy can keep several months longer. It's usually more like a couple of weeks. I also think it's worth mentioning that the best-before date isn't arbitrary. Food can start going bad before being noticeable by your other senses. You probably won't get sick from whatever spoilage has happened but a company doesn't want to chance a lawsuit.
I eat expired food all the time. I just check it. If it's questionable then I toss it though. Sour cream, yogurts, eggs, go much further then expiration dates. If canned items go bad the can puffs up after too long. I have things in my cupboard that are 5 years expired lol. But NEVER canned dairy or meat stuff. I already have stomach/health issues. Not risking that Reminds me of those UA-cam channels that eat 60 year old MRE kits or tinned meat or fruits. Bleck!
I understand why people wants pets with them, especially when they’re feeling low. But in houses like hers (Margaret) it’s dangerous and so sad for the poor things. No room to move and what if a pile of stuff fell on the poor little thing! 😞
It is very interesting and there is so much we have yet to discover about this. Right now, science seems to point to genetic reasons for this. It may be sparked by trauma, but a lot of people experience trauma and will never hoard. This disease is not as simple as just cleaning up. A lot of people clean out their homes and within a year, the home will look just as bad as it did before the clean out. This disease is persistent and chronic and often a lifelong struggle. I dated a good hoarder. I've never seen anything like it before in my entire life. I tried cleaning and organizing, to no avail. It was stomach turning to see expired food that he would often smell before consuming that would be rancid. His refrigerators and freezers (he had multiple!)were crammed so full there was no way to open them without item falling out. It was beyond my understanding. I had to break up with him because it was not something I could live with. I still love him, but between this and his other issues (gambling and alcohol abuse) it was not going to be healthy for me long term. I wish I could have helped him but it only led to more frustration on both sides.
The psychotherapist, Dr. Kiosses, is such a nice, non judgmental man! I bet he has seen it all. As someone who is a semi-hoarder, it's very difficult to let someone in your house, unless they're family. You feel a ton of shame.
Margaret holding onto and eating expired food was almost like a form of self harm by repeatedly risking food poisoning. But I was so proud of her when she finally started letting go of her clutter and cleaned out her living room. I think even her little dog Dennis was happy! 😊
*Disney* *House* she should set up like a little shop and either 1) sell items or 2) charge an entrance fee and to allow people to view her collection. Like a museum.
Poor Margaret, a child hood lasts a life time, I'm only half way through and I hope by the end she has achieved what needs to be done. Bless her, I will pray for her.
i really like how he started off small with Margaret by just cleaning off the couch. Definitely think that's less emotionally shocking than bringing in a team and a truck right away.
I agree but I expected both the living room and kitchen to be organized. Disappointing only one room was decluttered. It'll take Margaret a long time to take the initiative in the kitchen.
@Kat Gai actually, and I mean no offense here, that's almost entirely wrong. Largely, the government doesn't care when your bread goes off. For one thing, no salt doesn't go bad. But the container it's in does. Water doesn't go bad either, but if you leave it in a plastic bottle for a decade the plastic leeches into the water making it unsafe to drink. People, I would've thought this goes without saying, but please don't eat bad food. It *is* marked that way for a reason.
Oh I'm sure she's gotten sick at some point. Although the denial that she had for some of those foods, I think she probably convinced herself it was a flu or something. FtR I eat plenty of expired food lol. But when food is running around your fridge chasing other slower moving food..it's time to stop
She has gotten sick without a doubt - and probably often. Being 'sick to her stomach' most of the time as become the normal everyday state for her. Just part of the subconscious dealing with and expressing unhealed trauma through the body.

His two lady hoarder organisers are champions with amazing skills which could never be found in most people - you women are fantastic beautiful compassionate human beings! I have watched many Hoarder series before and many of those hoarders resisted so badly against change that they couldn't get rehabilitated and their stuff was just moved into boxes at the end and they continued living in their hoard and filth. Margaret was helpful and so grateful 🤗.
Omg the lady from Lancashire reminds me of my mom who was from Manchester. Her accent is just the same, I love it. Mom passed away in 2008 and my brother in 2009 and I'll never stop missing them as long as I live. We all moved here to the US in the early 70s when I was young. I did move back in the 90s for 3 years but hated how bad things were over there. People especially my cousins were so distant. We were once a very close family. I guess people change as they age. To all my British family members that are still around on this earth, I miss you terribly and love you all so much. God Bless you from the sunny and very hot Mississippi Gulf Coast.

@@skeptigal2785 Hoarding is only a symptom of MUCH deeper problems. It's building a huge barricade to keep people out, and to imprison family members in the hoard. It also creates an atmosphere of secrecy and shame.
Yeah it sucks. I've been through it and worse(luckily my mom is awesome). I wonder though, at what point does one accept and let go of all that though?. It's one thing when you are young and it's all fresh or happening in the moment... But I realized in my teens that none of the things I was told(etc) was any of my fault. I'm now almost 45. There must be some chemical/neurological difference in people that some hold onto it and others can't let go.
I’m not a hoarder and every spring I do purge items to give to charity that I no longer use, but sometimes I do feel there is just too much “stuff” in my house. It’s amazing how much you accumulate over the years and it really doesn’t take long to fill up even a big house. My husband likes to buy things - I think it gives him a high. Then search for bargains and the excitement of the chase. He buys things on online auctions and kijiji. We have more couches and chairs than 2 people can sit on. One time he drunk bought a couch in Boston, MA and we live near Ottawa in Canada. Speakers and stereo gear all over the place. Sometimes he does resell it. I always think that I could have had my 70’s kitchen and bathroom done professionally instead of me repainting things to spruce them up. Or we wouldn’t be in debt, and have some savings if it wasn’t for his insanity. We’ve driven to Atlanta to pick up 7 ft tall speakers before that stayed dominating my living room for years until a new pair became the new obsession. We’ve been on crazy adventures to get stuff. He just had to buy a 16 ft sea kayak “for me” (I’ll never use it) this summer for a bargain price of $200, and our truck broke down in Quebec because he ignored bad noises and refused my plea to turn around when we weren’t far from home. Cost us a tow charge, an expensive repair (we would have had to to it anyway - wheel bearings can go and it’s not pretty), and a hotel room for the night. Plus we had our dog and I had to worry about him. Sometimes I just want to strangle my husband…
When Margaret was looking at the photo of her father I also had a bit of a flash back, not to the extent of Margarets but a flash back nonetheless. The pic reminded me of my father who served in the New Zealand Armed Forces for all my life, My dad wore exactly the same uniform berets and all, Her dad even looked like my dad, the same ears the same smile it's quite uncanny. Only my dad left his army life at the door when he came home, my two brothers and me had weren't brought up Army Styles like Margaret obviously was. I understand what she's saying about her dad, I had friends that suffered a military run household, along with strict military rules and regulations, it was upsetting to me when I witnessed the dad's of my friends making them stand to attention while being disciplined.
OMG,the Disney lady -- imagine the wonderful trips or cruises they could have taken with the money she has wasted on Disneybilia. Very sad. She should at least allow their bedroom and her husband's study to be Disney free. And once those are cleared she can begin selling off the rest of the collection. It is horrible to be trapped by belongings. The hoarder lady should just tackle a small portion of a room each day -- the discomfort of going through items is causing her to be so tired and exhausted -- I think less because of the physical work of clearing items, but the psychological pain of doing so.
I'd like to correct their math. Over 30,000 Disney items is not 10's of thousands. At a minimum those figurines are 10 dollars/pounds each. So at a minimum it is hundreds of thousands of pounds/dollars. Truly ridiculous waste of money.
Claire's collection is 😳. I don't like Disney and even if I did I couldn't imagine having 30,000 pieces of anything. How can you make proper love in a bedroom like that? Not only is it too childlike plus having all those eyes on you fake or not, creepy.

Yes, I promised myself I wasn't going to be a big collector of things. I sent off about 300 pieces of clothing that we've outgrown and it feels great. I'm realizing that things take up not just space, but they also create dust and they take up too much time.
The Disney woman should respect her partner enought to keep her obsession in control. Otherwise she'd be better off marrying a damn Mickey Mouse body pillow. Few grown people want to have a thousand pairs of animated eyes boring into them while they sleep in Little Mermaid sheets. Poor dude must be at his wits' end.

Me too. My Dad seems to be struggling with it. To the point I just found out his pipes busted and he has been without water but refuses to have it fixed. I am guessing due to his shame over the trash in the livingroom. He was always what one would call a "pack rat" but it was benign compared to what's shown on TV and documentaries. He was cool with me cleaning it as long as he didn't have to help and he wanted all of it bagged and stacked in the kitchen. I told him no unless I can remove it from the house 😏
The reason so many older women are hoarders is because a lot of them were brought up to find value in everything, so they believe it is a "sin" or "wrong" to get rid of something or not make good use of it in some way, even though they could easily donate it to a church or an organization for the needy.
I think that science points to some brain differences in hoarders. There are a lot of people who experience trauma but do not hoard. Also, there seems to be a strong hereditary component. This disease is not just about cleaning up and it isn't just about not accumulating more things. People frequently will just require a mess that is worse than before. It is a frustrating disease for others to see their loved ones suffer with because it doesn't make sense. I love my boyfriend who is a hoarder, but I knew I could not live that way. It was only getting worse. I had to leave.
I don't think including an exercise program with the decluttering efforts would be a bad idea; the mind is interconnected with the body. Exercise helps release cortisol and allows the mind to think clearly.
i like the expert who helps her clean the house. He understands the cause of her hoarding situation and helps her with detach slowly. One show i watch from New Zealand (or Australia? I cant remember) similar to this show but they just throw all of the owner's stuffs out and dont let time have time to say goodbye to it, and even choose what to keep. And people who watch the show actually agree with that method, which comes as a shock to me. Who does that? I mean the owner has already broken down and they didn't help at all. So i like this show a lot and i even like it more when the cleaning expert is orginally a psychotherapist

At one point you just need to realize that nobody needs it. Every time I want to get rid of a good item, I ask a friend and if he doesn’t want it I bring it to a charity shop.
I admit, I have the issue "someone can/might use it" I know why I do it. I have zero issue giving it to people. I just do not like tossing good things out. But I actually started to realize over the past year, I could become a hoarder easily enough if I don't get on it. Not one of those ones that have 5 feet of actual trash, food, mold etc.. but closets started to over flow with things I didn't know what to do with anymore. I also have alot of guilt for throwing good items in landfills when so many need clothes etc. I don't even go shopping! Lol luckily I don't like to shop! I'm disabled and no vehicle so things just built up because I cannot get it to a donation place. 3 days ago I bought a 100 giant black garbage bags and tossing the stuff. I actually found watching these types of shows gives me motivation to chuck stuff away!

I’m pretty sure she experienced hunger, or some food deprivation or controls at some point of her life.. Either the parents made her eat out of date food, or they locked the fridge…
And the real shame, it's such a beautiful home. You can see from how much personality there is in her choice of furniture (like those oversized leather armchairs that are shaped like traditional wingbacks) & in how lovingly she's decorated the walls just how house-proud she used to be. It's such a tragic illness; it destroys ppl's identities.

I feel for these people. I have a niece this way and I just want to jump in and clear everything. It won't work because it doesn't solve the problem. I am the opposite. I don't like keeping things around. I go through every few months and just get rid of stuff and reorganize.
It's that loss of control, the shame and embarrassment and how overwhelmingly difficult it is for her. It isn't anything to do against her friend. Remember her friend only saw it once briefly before so she's embarrassed. Her friend is a sweetheart

Unfortunately it does. Almost all of them do. UNLESS they get serious with their compulsions and receive aggressive therapy. Lots of times they can’t be bothered because therapy interrupts their lives. It’s a horrible cycle.
My mom is a hoarder Piles of dishes, detergents, clothes, antiques, rubbish everywhere We've recently gave away our old fridge and got a new one But she took the inside compartments of the old fridge and they are laying there on the floor She cannot let go of rubbish, she is attatched to objects, she recently lost a little storage box and she has spent 2 whole days looking for it ruining her mood and day and ours I am exhausted getting blame for all the clutter, I did not sign up to this, I am exhausted trying to organize things find storage space for things, I am exhausted seeing her depressed demotivated to do some cleaning and decluttering, I am exhausted of her rageful tantrums blaming us all for all the mess and clutter while she is the one who bought all the things we didn't need and struggling to throw away rubbish I'm the only one in the house who bothers to clean the fridge now and then, everytime finding lots of expired food that need to be thrown in the trash She needs help but I do not know how to help her anymore, as I am exhausted myself, it is affecting all of us We rarely get anyone over, without some comments of the way we live and I have to do some defending to not let it affect my mom's feelings
Mercy. I really felt your frustration and I'm sorry for your experience. I suggest getting a bit of counseling to learn how to live with her and cope. It may not solve her but it will strengthen you. I started counseling last year and at first I talked all about the person I felt needed to get help but now I'm learning how much that person affected my emotions and how to cope with them not changing as I move on with my own life stronger. @@MKEditsxx My partner refused counseling so I had to keep at it for myself. I did not realize how codependent and how I much I wasn't actually dealing with it. If you need counseling, start with a church because it's free, even if you are not religious. They listen and then they can tell you where to go for free counseling. She may never accept help. That's the horrid cycle of it all.

The organizers, I’m sure, are accustomed to meltdowns but this one in particular drove them away. I’m wondering if Margaret could her her father’s ferocity in her reaction to the organizers very reasonable requests.
So, that can of tinned food was most likely fine! When the episode aired in April 2014, it was a year and four months past "best before." USDA says that canned goods are typically still good 1 1/2 to 5 years past the date, depending on the food.
That would specifically apply to US tinned food, which might be higher in salt, sugar, or other preservatives than other countries. Often guidelines differ between countries for a good reason
Frugal crazy? They deserve to get sick eating the expired food people know when they eat expired food that they are going to be sick and they can possibly die.If you can’t stand any sick days than they throw that deadly expired food away
@@lisajoyce6803 , you're much more likely to get "sick" (food poisoning) from FRESH food from a restaurant or drive-thru where it's been handled in an unsanitary manner. That happens to thousands every year.
These things usually have very artificially-happy endings, where the house is cleared out, looks beautiful, orderly, etc. - and, end of story. Except that it's barely a beginning. Come back in a few months/years, and it will be as bad or worse than before. These documentaries are NEVER honest about the problem.
@@413smr Not statistically, but I have personally known two hoarders whose families REPEATEDLY cleaned up their houses, but the hoarding process started again immediately.

I also noted with the two hoarders I know, the very heavy denial going on. One woman just said, "My home is my castle", and the other obsessively watched Hoarders on A & E and exclaimed about how awful THEIR houses were. Just oblivious!

Writing from San Diego- One of my dear friends is a hoarder and his apt building is being sold. I really gained alot of insight from Margaret's story. And I really like Margaret and think she she is amazing for letting all these strangers into her life, house and trust. When she blew-up at the de-clutters- BOY SO WOULD I !! - just too much BUSYBODY pushed on her too fast. She has a lot of strength and spirit- I wish the best for her

The thing is they need ongoing intensive support- a lifetime of trauma takes a huge effort to overcome.

Stelios is amazing. He helps the hoarders in such a gentle, understanding way. I am glad Margaret has some reclaimed space to share with her family and friends. Childhood trauma can have a lasting impact - if you haven't the tools to deal with it. Now Stelios has given her that insight and ability to process and deal with the trauma.
Can't believe how rude Margaret was to the Diva's!!! My hat is off to them for calmly leaving. I would never let someone scream at me like that...especially if I'm there to help save their life.
Expired food that's a serious health risk. You absolutely cannot keep expired food. That kitchen should have been the first thing to be declutterd.
There is the extreme people thou, that throw away everything thats just a day or 2 paßt expiry date. 😂

@Kat Gai yes this is true. Its more to cover themselves (the manufacturer) legally, and generally food can last much longer and still be totally fine. And even if its not fine, that's what we have immune systems for. Its not a guarantee of instant illness.
It really depends on the food and how out of date it is and how it was stored. Some items can be kept considerably longer than what is indicated as the expiry or best before date, and most will show it in some way when they've gone bad. You'll know if an egg or dairy has gone bad; also bread, cheese, fruits and vegetables. I personally pay no attention to expiry dates and use my sense of sight/smell to alert me if the food has gone off.
You do have to be careful with: meat, as it can go off before it looks or smells bad; and canned food, which is a risk for botulism. However, canned foods can last much longer than the expiry date, but you have to look for denting, bowing etc in even newer cans.
@Kat Gai Although I agree with your point, much of the food they mentioned was almost a decade out of date and was certainly *not* looking/smelling/tasting good. Also, I wouldn't say dairy can keep several months longer. It's usually more like a couple of weeks. I also think it's worth mentioning that the best-before date isn't arbitrary. Food can start going bad before being noticeable by your other senses. You probably won't get sick from whatever spoilage has happened but a company doesn't want to chance a lawsuit.
I eat expired food all the time. I just check it. If it's questionable then I toss it though. Sour cream, yogurts, eggs, go much further then expiration dates.
If canned items go bad the can puffs up after too long. I have things in my cupboard that are 5 years expired lol. But NEVER canned dairy or meat stuff. I already have stomach/health issues. Not risking that

I understand why people wants pets with them, especially when they’re feeling low. But in houses like hers (Margaret) it’s dangerous and so sad for the poor things. No room to move and what if a pile of stuff fell on the poor little thing! 😞

Stelios is wonderful. I would never allow my children in a home like Margaret's. Hoarding is a terrible disease. The psychology is so interesting.
It is very interesting and there is so much we have yet to discover about this. Right now, science seems to point to genetic reasons for this. It may be sparked by trauma, but a lot of people experience trauma and will never hoard.
This disease is not as simple as just cleaning up. A lot of people clean out their homes and within a year, the home will look just as bad as it did before the clean out. This disease is persistent and chronic and often a lifelong struggle.
I dated a good hoarder. I've never seen anything like it before in my entire life. I tried cleaning and organizing, to no avail. It was stomach turning to see expired food that he would often smell before consuming that would be rancid. His refrigerators and freezers (he had multiple!)were crammed so full there was no way to open them without item falling out. It was beyond my understanding. I had to break up with him because it was not something I could live with. I still love him, but between this and his other issues (gambling and alcohol abuse) it was not going to be healthy for me long term. I wish I could have helped him but it only led to more frustration on both sides.

The psychotherapist, Dr. Kiosses, is such a nice, non judgmental man! I bet he has seen it all. As someone who is a semi-hoarder, it's very difficult to let someone in your house, unless they're family. You feel a ton of shame.

Margaret holding onto and eating expired food was almost like a form of self harm by repeatedly risking food poisoning. But I was so proud of her when she finally started letting go of her clutter and cleaned out her living room. I think even her little dog Dennis was happy! 😊

I agree but I expected both the living room and kitchen to be organized. Disappointing only one room was decluttered. It'll take Margaret a long time to take the initiative in the kitchen.

@Kat Gai actually, and I mean no offense here, that's almost entirely wrong. Largely, the government doesn't care when your bread goes off.
For one thing, no salt doesn't go bad. But the container it's in does. Water doesn't go bad either, but if you leave it in a plastic bottle for a decade the plastic leeches into the water making it unsafe to drink.
People, I would've thought this goes without saying, but please don't eat bad food. It *is* marked that way for a reason.

She has gotten sick without a doubt - and probably often. Being 'sick to her stomach' most of the time as become the normal everyday state for her. Just part of the subconscious dealing with and expressing unhealed trauma through the body.
Stelios is awesome! He is so good at his profession and is practically saving people's lives. His two lady hoarder organisers are champions with amazing skills which could never be found in most people - you women are fantastic beautiful compassionate human beings! Well done to Margaret! I have watched many Hoarder series before and many of those hoarders resisted so badly against change that they couldn't get rehabilitated and their stuff was just moved into boxes at the end and they continued living in their hoard and filth. Margaret was helpful and so grateful 🤗.
The way Stelios approaches the people he helps is absolutely amazing and a god send. He is so different from the way the American Therapists approach.

Omg the lady from Lancashire reminds me of my mom who was from Manchester. Her accent is just the same, I love it. Mom passed away in 2008 and my brother in 2009 and I'll never stop missing them as long as I live. We all moved here to the US in the early 70s when I was young. I did move back in the 90s for 3 years but hated how bad things were over there. People especially my cousins were so distant. We were once a very close family. I guess people change as they age. To all my British family members that are still around on this earth, I miss you terribly and love you all so much. God Bless you from the sunny and very hot Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Yeah it sucks. I've been through it and worse(luckily my mom is awesome). I wonder though, at what point does one accept and let go of all that though?. It's one thing when you are young and it's all fresh or happening in the moment... But I realized in my teens that none of the things I was told(etc) was any of my fault. I'm now almost 45.
There must be some chemical/neurological difference in people that some hold onto it and others can't let go.

I’m not a hoarder and every spring I do purge items to give to charity that I no longer use, but sometimes I do feel there is just too much “stuff” in my house. It’s amazing how much you accumulate over the years and it really doesn’t take long to fill up even a big house. My husband likes to buy things - I think it gives him a high. Then search for bargains and the excitement of the chase. He buys things on online auctions and kijiji. We have more couches and chairs than 2 people can sit on. One time he drunk bought a couch in Boston, MA and we live near Ottawa in Canada. Speakers and stereo gear all over the place. Sometimes he does resell it. I always think that I could have had my 70’s kitchen and bathroom done professionally instead of me repainting things to spruce them up. Or we wouldn’t be in debt, and have some savings if it wasn’t for his insanity. We’ve driven to Atlanta to pick up 7 ft tall speakers before that stayed dominating my living room for years until a new pair became the new obsession. We’ve been on crazy adventures to get stuff. He just had to buy a 16 ft sea kayak “for me” (I’ll never use it) this summer for a bargain price of $200, and our truck broke down in Quebec because he ignored bad noises and refused my plea to turn around when we weren’t far from home. Cost us a tow charge, an expensive repair (we would have had to to it anyway - wheel bearings can go and it’s not pretty), and a hotel room for the night. Plus we had our dog and I had to worry about him. Sometimes I just want to strangle my husband…
Why are you still with him? You'll just wake up, one day, old & full of resentment, regretting not leaving when you still had some good years.

Only my dad left his army life at the door when he came home, my two brothers and me had weren't brought up Army Styles like Margaret obviously was.
I understand what she's saying about her dad, I had friends that suffered a military run household, along with strict military rules and regulations, it was upsetting to me when I witnessed the dad's of my friends making them stand to attention while being disciplined.
OMG,the Disney lady -- imagine the wonderful trips or cruises they could have taken with the money she has wasted on Disneybilia. Very sad. She should at least allow their bedroom and her husband's study to be Disney free. And once those are cleared she can begin selling off the rest of the collection. It is horrible to be trapped by belongings. The hoarder lady should just tackle a small portion of a room each day -- the discomfort of going through items is causing her to be so tired and exhausted -- I think less because of the physical work of clearing items, but the psychological pain of doing so.
I'd like to correct their math. Over 30,000 Disney items is not 10's of thousands. At a minimum those figurines are 10 dollars/pounds each. So at a minimum it is hundreds of thousands of pounds/dollars. Truly ridiculous waste of money.
Claire's collection is 😳. I don't like Disney and even if I did I couldn't imagine having 30,000 pieces of anything. How can you make proper love in a bedroom like that? Not only is it too childlike plus having all those eyes on you fake or not, creepy.

Yes, I promised myself I wasn't going to be a big collector of things. I sent off about 300 pieces of clothing that we've outgrown and it feels great. I'm realizing that things take up not just space, but they also create dust and they take up too much time.
The Disney woman should respect her partner enought to keep her obsession in control. Otherwise she'd be better off marrying a damn Mickey Mouse body pillow. Few grown people want to have a thousand pairs of animated eyes boring into them while they sleep in Little Mermaid sheets. Poor dude must be at his wits' end.

Me too. My Dad seems to be struggling with it. To the point I just found out his pipes busted and he has been without water but refuses to have it fixed. I am guessing due to his shame over the trash in the livingroom. He was always what one would call a "pack rat" but it was benign compared to what's shown on TV and documentaries. He was cool with me cleaning it as long as he didn't have to help and he wanted all of it bagged and stacked in the kitchen. I told him no unless I can remove it from the house 😏
The reason so many older women are hoarders is because a lot of them were brought up to find value in everything, so they believe it is a "sin" or "wrong" to get rid of something or not make good use of it in some way, even though they could easily donate it to a church or an organization for the needy.
And they are alone with no hobby .
That's not the only reason. The love of money is the root of all evil. That's the root of all hoarding

I think that science points to some brain differences in hoarders. There are a lot of people who experience trauma but do not hoard. Also, there seems to be a strong hereditary component. This disease is not just about cleaning up and it isn't just about not accumulating more things. People frequently will just require a mess that is worse than before. It is a frustrating disease for others to see their loved ones suffer with because it doesn't make sense.
I love my boyfriend who is a hoarder, but I knew I could not live that way. It was only getting worse. I had to leave.
I don't think including an exercise program with the decluttering efforts would be a bad idea; the mind is interconnected with the body. Exercise helps release cortisol and allows the mind to think clearly.

i like the expert who helps her clean the house. He understands the cause of her hoarding situation and helps her with detach slowly. One show i watch from New Zealand (or Australia? I cant remember) similar to this show but they just throw all of the owner's stuffs out and dont let time have time to say goodbye to it, and even choose what to keep. And people who watch the show actually agree with that method, which comes as a shock to me. Who does that? I mean the owner has already broken down and they didn't help at all. So i like this show a lot and i even like it more when the cleaning expert is orginally a psychotherapist

At one point you just need to realize that nobody needs it. Every time I want to get rid of a good item, I ask a friend and if he doesn’t want it I bring it to a charity shop.

I know why I do it. I have zero issue giving it to people. I just do not like tossing good things out. But I actually started to realize over the past year, I could become a hoarder easily enough if I don't get on it. Not one of those ones that have 5 feet of actual trash, food, mold etc.. but closets started to over flow with things I didn't know what to do with anymore. I also have alot of guilt for throwing good items in landfills when so many need clothes etc.
I don't even go shopping! Lol luckily I don't like to shop!
I'm disabled and no vehicle so things just built up because I cannot get it to a donation place. 3 days ago I bought a 100 giant black garbage bags and tossing the stuff.
I actually found watching these types of shows gives me motivation to chuck stuff away!

This was an amazing episode. I could relate to the Disney collector, though my own items come nowhere near the amount she had.
And the real shame, it's such a beautiful home. You can see from how much personality there is in her choice of furniture (like those oversized leather armchairs that are shaped like traditional wingbacks) & in how lovingly she's decorated the walls just how house-proud she used to be. It's such a tragic illness; it destroys ppl's identities.

Unfortunately it does. Almost all of them do. UNLESS they get serious with their compulsions and receive aggressive therapy. Lots of times they can’t be bothered because therapy interrupts their lives. It’s a horrible cycle.

Piles of dishes, detergents, clothes, antiques, rubbish everywhere
We've recently gave away our old fridge and got a new one
But she took the inside compartments of the old fridge and they are laying there on the floor
She cannot let go of rubbish, she is attatched to objects, she recently lost a little storage box and she has spent 2 whole days looking for it ruining her mood and day and ours
I am exhausted getting blame for all the clutter, I did not sign up to this, I am exhausted trying to organize things find storage space for things, I am exhausted seeing her depressed demotivated to do some cleaning and decluttering, I am exhausted of her rageful tantrums blaming us all for all the mess and clutter while she is the one who bought all the things we didn't need and struggling to throw away rubbish
I'm the only one in the house who bothers to clean the fridge now and then, everytime finding lots of expired food that need to be thrown in the trash
She needs help but I do not know how to help her anymore, as I am exhausted myself, it is affecting all of us
We rarely get anyone over, without some comments of the way we live and I have to do some defending to not let it affect my mom's feelings
Mercy. I really felt your frustration and I'm sorry for your experience. I suggest getting a bit of counseling to learn how to live with her and cope. It may not solve her but it will strengthen you. I started counseling last year and at first I talked all about the person I felt needed to get help but now I'm learning how much that person affected my emotions and how to cope with them not changing as I move on with my own life stronger. But as soon as I am hopefully financially independent I do want to talk to a specialist, let it out to someone who would help me and guide me to cope with all this and how I can change my habits and manage negative emotions and stress
@@MKEditsxx My partner refused counseling so I had to keep at it for myself. I did not realize how codependent and how I much I wasn't actually dealing with it. If you need counseling, start with a church because it's free, even if you are not religious. They listen and then they can tell you where to go for free counseling. She may never accept help. That's the horrid cycle of it all.

The organizers, I’m sure, are accustomed to meltdowns but this one in particular drove them away. I’m wondering if Margaret could her her father’s ferocity in her reaction to the organizers very reasonable requests.
So, that can of tinned food was most likely fine! When the episode aired in April 2014, it was a year and four months past "best before." USDA says that canned goods are typically still good 1 1/2 to 5 years past the date, depending on the food.

@@lisajoyce6803 , you're much more likely to get "sick" (food poisoning) from FRESH food from a restaurant or drive-thru where it's been handled in an unsanitary manner. That happens to thousands every year.

These things usually have very artificially-happy endings, where the house is cleared out, looks beautiful, orderly, etc. - and, end of story. Except that it's barely a beginning. Come back in a few months/years, and it will be as bad or worse than before. These documentaries are NEVER honest about the problem.

@@413smr Not statistically, but I have personally known two hoarders whose families REPEATEDLY cleaned up their houses, but the hoarding process started again immediately.
@@ferociousgumby You are completely right. It doesn't benefit them to get rid of the symptoms (hoarding) as long as the cause for the hoarding is not treated properly.
@@_tardigrade Basically, they are building a wall to keep people away, and even imprisoning their family members who often only have one TINY area of the house that is theirs. I also noted with the two hoarders I know, the very heavy denial going on. One woman just said, "My home is my castle", and the other obsessively watched Hoarders on A & E and exclaimed about how awful THEIR houses were. Just oblivious!

Writing from San Diego- One of my dear friends is a hoarder and his apt building is being sold. I really gained alot of insight from Margaret's story. And I really like Margaret and think she she is amazing for letting all these strangers into her life, house and trust. When she blew-up at the de-clutters- BOY SO WOULD I !! - just too much BUSYBODY pushed on her too fast. She has a lot of strength and spirit- I wish the best for her
I agree I wouldn't want other people to tell me what of my own belongings I should throw away, or them to throw away my things.
