- I've often seen Rayman get written off for a Smash Brothers roster slot due to people not seeing the potential to warrant his inclusion. And I do see where they are coming from, he's a very simplistically designed character whose games are more about the worlds he's running through, rather than what he himself can do.
But don't sleep on Ubisoft's mascot! The sheer fact that he doesn't have limbs opens up so much unique potential that only Rayman could fulfill!
May 2020 Retrospective Edit: Even after editing the Diablo video, I'm pretty sure this is still my favorite Smash concept. I love this character with all my heart, it brings me so much joy to see so many people sharing or getting introduced to that same love. Because seriously, he would be a fantastic addition to the Smash roster! His potential is awesome, his zany worlds could offer so many colorful stages, his music is ASTOUNDING... what more could one want? 12/10 character, and I'm comfortably happy I did him justice here.

Copy-pasting and pinning this on all older videos as I'm making them public again: When I was younger I fell pretty hard into that sort of "Oh yeah, I'm leading an internet community, I'm the superstar that knows best so everyone follow me!" which, looking back I'm not especially fond of, it's a very parasocial attitude. I don't think there was any one, super glaring issue, more of a "Death of a thousand cuts" that make me cringe looking back. A series putting forth my ideas as factually "Improving" them, constantly setting my viewers as my "Subjects" in often belittling ways, taking on a tone as if I'm speaking one-to-one with a viewer instead of presenting to a large audience, that sort of thing. And I regret now, it wasn't the healthiest atmosphere for myself or my viewers to foster. So, I just wanted to throw up this "Disclaimer" on all these, as while I don't dislike them enough to throw away years of editing work into a dusty attic, I do feel like a commentary on the 'vibes' I had in the past was necessary.
Also to obviously explain the lack of Twitter/Twitch/Discord/Whatever-Else-I-Advertised-In-These-Videos. Trying to keep up a social media rots the brain and I have long since left that behind, I do NOT want that strife in my life!

It could be problematic for an amiibo design for him, but they could make it the most fun and entertaining amiibo
Have a central pillar, attach everything to that rather than the body. Limbless and stylish.
Just have him relax lying down on the ground, holding his head with his feet or something.

1- Up special should be the purple lum, and his hair should work like peach's float, even after using his up-b.
2- His neutral special should be the lums from Rayman 2, since the fist is his smash attack.
3- That down-b is cool... but kinda weird and he doesn't do that in his game.
Instead he should spawn a plum as a heavy projectile, like simon's axe, but he can move around carring the plum before throwing it, like DK's grab.
P.D: His Final Smash would be the Mosquito, obviously.

While I really love the idea of utilizing Rayman's lack of limbs for his moveset, I feel the gimmicks he has here with the idea of his limbs being used against him are a bit too risky. Personally speaking, I don't really like the idea of a lot of micromanaging with my Smash characters, and I don't think it'd really work for a character like Rayman. That said, I'm definitely for the idea of weaponizing other parts of Rayman's floating collection of a body, like the torso kick. Also I'd rather his helicopter hair be an air action instead of a special. Mostly because it's such an essential and second nature aspect of Rayman's mobility and should be treated as such. It'd be like if you relegated Kirby's puff jumps to just his up special.
Rayman is, in my opinion, the thrid party character that deserves a spot the most.
This concept of a moveset is great. You really did some good work.

Rayman is also my most wanted character and I really would like to see him in Ultimate.
Also I really liked most of the moveset ideas but I feel like I'd replace that Down Special with the Rayman 3 power-ups, they work like Shulk's Monado Arts as it completely changes his move sets.
Vortex - Changes Rayman's Neutral Special to Vortex.
Shock Rocket - Changes Rayman's Side B to a Rocket which can be controlled like Snake's missile.
Heavy Metal Fist - Increases the Smash Attack damage as the limbs cannot be deflected, however it decreases Rayman's speed.
Throttle Copter - Changes Rayman's Up B as he can now fly around freely for a limited time.
Lockjaw - Changes Rayman's Grab to a long ranged one as he can also Tether Recover with it.
Dude Rayman was in game like from day 1. Master Hand boy, he didn't even need to show up "full body".

I think that this character is just a bit to complicated such as having each character get a new animation for pulling of the plunger
That down b that you came up with would be so cool. Imagine doing down B at the opponent off the edge and hitting them than following up with a forward air. Not just that, his down B can help restart the positions of his limbs. His body attracts the limbs that are being kept away from him like the example you gave with mario up smashing.
yes this is brilliant. Basically olimar's whistle - but for his body. Perfect for when all he has left is his body and head while the limbs are all over the stage during a free for all or an items crazy match.

I liked the "body projectile" idea, specially if one would be able to aim it a bit, to help on his recovery.
Although, the Plum Summoning is also a good way to give him a "decoy" of sorts, and even a "head stuck" property like in the original game
The plum and his body are both purple - oh god imagine the twitch reaction confusion, especially if he whips out both in quick session

Honestly, this moveset is perfect! He really would be the perfect fighter, and I sincerely hope that they add him in as DLC.
I've had an idea for a final smash in my head ever since the artsyomni fake out a few years ago, but it'd probably need some work.
Basically, the one I came up with would see him using the power ups from Rayman 3 in a chain of sorts. Starting with vortex to propel the opponent upward, then throttle copter to get up to their height, following with lockjaw to swing off the opponent while emitting an electrical shock through the chains, continuing with a heavy metal fist to slam them into the ground, and ending it off with shock rocket to finish the opponent and send them flying.
But hey that's just my idea. Honestly I wouldnt doubt if they made his final smash a Rabbid stampede or something.

This is one of the most unique takes on Rayman I have seen. Very creative!
My question/concern, wouldn't his neutral attacks basically turn him into olimar but with more directions you can throw the pikmin (limbs)?
I imagine it being extremely annoying to play against, because the rayman player would be purposely trying to 'space out their opponents' while button mashing to try to get out as many attacks as possible.
And the risk/reward of players knocking away limbs might only be a factor in small battles (where you can clearly see your opponents).
Still though, definitely cool to imagine. But am I misunderstanding the design? Thanks!
That's a legitimate concern, but I think it would be a little harder for Rayman to play the spacing game. Minus the neutral and down specials, the limbs aren't active hitboxes for the whole attack, they're only dangerous for the window of time any other character's attack would be. Would make them much easier to deal with then the annoying latch-on mechanic of the Pikmin.
Plus, a Rayman that's throwing out everything willy-nilly like that is going to be a literal sitting duck. Can't run away from opponents without your feet!
And If that's too much, perhaps make it so Rayman himself takes some damage when his limbs are hit? Throw a little more risk into mismanaging his limbs.

Rayman is my childhood, he's been with me since the first console I had, the PS2, and in recent years my love for me just went up, specially after that damn fake leak, which got me real upset when it was proven fake. I never thought about such mechanics for Rayman, I like the ideas you come up with, it's specially impressive that you came up with the lag mechanic because of Rayman Legends and 3, I had never seen or heard that before, and I must say that amazed me! I always thought about the plunger gun being a special, but I like how you think it could work. My personal favorite is the down special: it's really Rayman-ish, not based off something but who cares, isn't part of the roster based off the character's actual personality and looks rather than his games for the most part? I'm a big fan of kung-foot, it's always been big old fun with friends, so it's a 1+ for me.
I always thought Rayman's main mechanic would simply be being limbless, but your ideas are truly impressive and unique, great work man, I LOVE this!
May I suggest a character? Porky Minch from Mother 3/Earthbound:
The heaviest character in the game. A spider-mech controlled by a rotten brat. His main mechanic could very well be based off spiders' movement and mechanical stuff, primarily from his Brawl appearance. I always thought of spider bites, stabs and such for his main attacks, maybe even base them from different types of spiders! His specials would reference his appearances in the series: Counter Shield (down), Mecha-Porky (side), Stinky Gas (neutral) and that hover laser thing from his Brawl boss fight (up).
Porky could be truly unique to the roster, if it wasn't for that damned Bowser Jr. that stole the position for the first character in a mech...

Rayman has always been my number one vote for smash.
His art style would fit very well in smash. There are many reason why Rayman has the best chance to get into smash ultimate. First off, Ubisoft and Nintendo work together and created the successful game Mario and Rabbids Kingdom Battle. Secondly, they want to make the biggest cross over and there is no Ubisoft representative yet. Finally, Rayman is a well known character and like this video explained, he has gotten a lot of attention due to his derpy trophy, he was in the best leak, and has a spirit in the game. (Plus in the 4 leaked images one kind of looked like a Rabbid)
I would put more Rabbids references in Rayman moveset such as him throwing a random Rabbid in a costume or holding a weapon as they fight for you, but have low health. This can be for his down special or side special. Plus another Rabbid reference in his taunts, grabs, and victory animation can be cool.
As amazing as Rayman would be, the fact that he's a spirit in the game is... well, it's kinda bad news for his chances.
He is in Brawlhalla. He wont be in ultimate. I promise you that.

I think his side special should be him swinging from one of those purple thingies.
Rayman must also have one of the lowest crouches in the game, with his down tilt being the crouching move from Rayman 1.
Default costume will be his modern hoodie design from Rayman 3 and alt costume will be his ascot design from Rayman 2, both will have a blue option because Rayman wore blue in the Japanese version.
Lastly, his taunts are him reading the game's instruction manual with Murphy, him dribbling his body like in Rayman 2, and him doing that taunt . . . thing from Rayman 1.
I think the lum swing should be a grab.
His down special seems like so much fun to use as a odd-ball recovery

This design is natural, yet it doesn't break the boundaries of the fundamentals for Smash. This is astounding, and I commend you for having so much thought and effort this video had.

Instead of a gun, he could try to stick one on the opponents face with a hand stretch to either command grab or regular stun. Could also grab ledges!

Rayman is still my most wanted newcomer for Smash and always will be until we all see the day he gets into Smash as a playable Fighter as well and the only character left I actually really want to see in Smash as of right now in all honestly hes just so close on getting in yet still so far not to mention all of the evidence surrounding him on actually making into Smash but alas he still didnt make the base roster for Smash Ultimate or even as a DLC Fighter in Smash 4 hopefully we could see him as potential future DLC sometime in the future in Smash Ultimate but im glad to see we among others share the same most wanted newcomer for Smash

I'm a simple man. I only wish for Karate Joe and Rayman. Though I think his Down B would be the plum. I don't really like it that much either but it's been a staple to the Rayman series. Maybe it works like the ramblin' mushroom and inverts the player's controls, if they're grounded. But if in the air it works as a meteor smash with a sweet spot on the bottom. If it just lands on the ground and it doesn't hit Rayman or any other character can hit it around like Pac-Man's fire hydrant. -And I'm just-

Rayman isn't as loved as he should be, i also think that the costumes from rayman 3 would be the specials. Tornado shot, power fist, helicopter hat, grapple claw missle. All of these could be better for attacks than most of the ones you recommended

Tbh i think rayman 3 is definitely a contender for his most iconic game. The ps2 was a huge hit and rayman 3 didn't do poorly as far as I'm aware. The 2d stuff is his routes but i still think that 3 would be the best place to ger specials from. Better than the examples shown in this video anyway. Characters shouldn't have completely original moves unless you can't think of ways to implement a move. Rayman already has a dair, up air, nair, jab, dash and f smash. Based on legends

But hell no.
Targeting little limbs would be absolutely terrible. Not only would it be hard to target small floating objects, but it would horribly inconsistent.
And the Idea of hindering his limbs from coming back is also not an appropriate balancing mechanic:
Not only would it be hard to juggle a small limb, but you're forcing an opponent to make a decision that is always in Raymans favor.
Attacking the limb would, at the very best, stall one if his moves while leaving you wide open for another. The only Situation where I see this being beneficial is Rayman being super far away from you while one of the limbs is nearby and he has to use that one specific move he needs the limb for. But other than recovering I don't see Rayman ever need to attack from accross the stage.
To make things harder, you probably have to account for positioning. Meaning if you were to even stand in a way that you can stall his limbs, you have to stand between Ray and his limb, which would be the perfect punish opportunity.
Even if his limbs took %damage for him it just means you're giving your opponent an opportunity to strike back.
One good application would probably be on a parry I guess. You could smack Ray away which means you get the option to choose: follow up or smack away his limb to get an advantage on your next approach. This is the most reslistic use I see for this in counterplay. But the biggest issue with this would be that this would effectively shut Ray down on a single parry.
You're not shutting down a single move after all, but his limb which is tied to several of his moves.
A single mistake would mean the fight would become a complete uphill battle for Ray.
TL;DR:
Defintely fun and Interesting idea I'd love to see in some way in the game but core mechanic would likely be wonky and juggling limbs is just an outright bad idea (although an Interesting one).
Your almost completely right assuming the limbs come back slowly. However, the idea still has merit. The idea could work completely if:
*Rayman's limbs came back super fast. If they were knocked away, the limb would be stunned but then teleport back to Rayman to prevent loops.
*If the limbs made him flinch. It would be like Dhalsim or if Belmonts had hurtboxes on their whips

Very well done. I love what you've brought to the table as far as his move-set goes, with so much thought put into it. Rayman deserves a place in Smash Ultimate.
But Ubisoft might choose somebody else if Nintnedo approch them for the lineup. If they choose a Rabbid, Sakurai would recivce a ton of backlash on Twitter over a character that spuned with Rayman (before Ubisoft splitied the two up to have Rabbids to have it's own franchise) and have a crossover with Mario with Kingdom Battle having 3 characters in Ultimate as spirits.
I wouldn't mind if Ubisoft choose someone they're familir with to join in Smash and reveal it at E3. Ubisoft says there will be more surprise collaborations with Nintendo, bet that Ubisoft might revive F-Zero since they saved Star Fox for Starlink.

I'm not good at explaining things so forgive me, but I'd like to see Nightmare from Soulcalibur in Smash! If you think about it in Smash there's brawl characters that use their fist and then you got characters who wield swards. Now Smash is a fighting game first and foremost and have two Street Fighter characters that represent one of if not the most popular "fist" fighting game of all time. Soulcalibur is the most popular weapon based fighting game no question. Am I the only one who sees the potential in this? I mean come on! Namco helped with Ultimate's development and Link was in Soulcalibur 2.

I’m so glad you care about Rayman in smash as much as I do. Rayman was my childhood and I hope to god he gets in smash one day.
Btw that up special will not work. Unless you made his jump height insane, like Yoshi or Puff, that up special will get him no where. I still want that in his moveset as well, so instead make where when you hold jump, he starts spinning his hair. It’s the same button command as peach’s float, but he descends slowly instead of just floating. And I really like the idea of being able to attack while descending.
Aside from the recovery and side special, I'm all for this moveset for Rayman! If his recovery were to begin with a sudden boost upwards as if he were catching an updraft, then I would have no problem with Rayman slowly descending for his recovery.
As for the Rabbids...No. Just no. The Rabbids are garbage and need to stay as far away from Rayman's moveset as possible. It's like you said, they cannibalized his series for the better part of a decade and nearly made Rayman disappear altogether, and for that I want them to have nothing to do with Rayman going foward.
I do find it curious how you didn't mention a Final Smash for Rayman. Granted, the best thing I could come up with was an avalanche of all his friends (and costumes from Legends since there's a lot of them) and Globox's dozens of kids sweeping away all opponents with their sheer numbers.
This video have a good concept, but I also feel, some things should be different:
1- Up special should be the purple lum, and his hair should work like peach's float, even after using his up-b.
2- His neutral special should be the lums from Rayman 2, since the fist is his smash attack.
3- That down-b is cool... but kinda weird and he doesn't do that in his game.
Instead he should spawn a plum as a heavy projectile, like simon's axe, but he can move around carring the plum before throwing it, like DK's grab.
P.D: His Final Smash would be the Mosquito, obviously.
I like the idea of Rayman dropkicking his torso off the stage and being helplessly dragged into the blast zone
I like the idea but I think raymans recovery should give him a bit of a tiny jump I mean like hes a light weight right? So hes gone be of stage alot (probably)

This is incredible I want him in Smash more than ever now!! Slight suggestion tho: what if his down b WAS the Rabbids!? Like different ones show up at random that Rayman can interact with (either 1 or 2 at a time) and do various things dealing different damage percentages, depending on the type of Rabbid he plucks out, that way he has some slight options to recover his limbs AND have Rabbids represented in the game as well, besides as spirits!

Technically there’s no regular Rabbid spirits, just the Mario ones, Kingdom Battle was fun but I got stuck on one of the levels though, also I prefer the plunger gun but that’s just me
Rayman has been my favorite game since the N64 release of The Great Escape. Seeing this video made me smile ridiculously. I hope this comes true.

He could have an amazing recovery, sonic’s speed (maybe a bit slower) and Kirby’s jumps but he would be very light weight so you would need to avoid your opponent because he would be KO’d in only a few hits

Great video dork, but a character that i actually want is Tails from the Sonic the hedgehog series,a character that has been requested as much as Ray boy(not extremely requested but still enough popular and made appearences as trophies and spirit )

Suggestion for the torso kick down b: what if it could be used like the puddle orcane has in rivals of aether? He may not have a good up b, but he would just kick his torso on stage and rubber band back to it. He could place it there and save it for recovering, but other players can hit it around, maybe even throw it. Lets say we go with throwing. If they throw it, then it would zip back to you. But that means if they want to keep you from recovering, they would have to constantly worry about keeping your torso away, aswell as your other limbs.
Grabbing and up throw: Another suggestion would be added to his throw. What if he had a cargo throw like donkey kong, but he could FLY AROUND with you in his hands. Imagine getting grab and struggling to make him let you go while he flies around and then kicks you. So he grabs, flies with you in his hands, then can boot you off stage by punting you out of his hands.
Side b plunger gun: Lastly, to reload his plunger gun, would he have to pick up the plunger he used? And what if your plunger missed and went off stage? Would the plunger be back in your plunger gun, or could you not use it anymore? And what if your opponent could pick up the plunger and throw it at you? So if you miss, the opponent can take the chance to pick the plunger up before you, and throw it right back, making it stick to your face and allowing them to attack you while you take time to pull the plunger off.
Idk just a suggestion but i hope you take it into consideration!
Edit: So I read some comments and saw something that made me ask some more questions.
With rayman's down b, if he were to use it without all his limbs together, is it an easy way to just get all your limbs back? Also when he is going back to his body, would a player be able to hit his body parts so he doesnt reach his body? If so, what if rayman's body parts couldnt reach his body bc of someone hitting them? Is he just kinda softlocked?

Also, I think his down special should be him switching to his different power-ups from Rayman 3, each one boosting his attacks/moveset. Think of it as Shulk using Monodo Arts or Hero with his command Attacks.

As a super square enix nerd I’d like to see sora similar to ssf2 where he uses several abilities from all his games such as his basic combo plus from 2 with a small amount of flow motion and magic. With 2B like soul calibur making references from all the weapons, pod moves and possibly moves from the other games in the Yoko Taro series.
