Always reminds me of the remarkable headmaster of Hurlyvale Primary School, Mr. James Brownlie, who tragically passed away during my time there. He compared the school to the "Good Ship Musulu," and had us sing this at hymns because it was one of his favorite songs. Few people have impacted my life so greatly, and this song will remind me of him until the day I die.
Great story! Wish I'd had Mr Brownlie as a headmaster. My strongest memory of this song is also bound up with school, but in a different context. When my son was in the infants I spent a whole year on the dole and one afternoon I was walking across the playground feeling seriously despondent, on the way to pick him up from reception class. There was a crowd of year 6's singing "Sailing" in the hall, it was an amazing sound for a primary school music lesson. Hearing the words reminded me that I wouldn't be on the dole forever and one day I would again be flying past them high clouds, so to speak; and it happened and I'm now a successful translator. Ok, Rod isn´t bad, but it´s not the only song covered by him where I can say other singers sidn´even make a better cover. Listen to this song by Sutherland Brothers and a Quiver Lake or Downtown Train by Tom Waits or Bob Seger I don´t want to talk about it by Rita Colidge I had the chance to see Rod in Sun City, South Africa and one in Munich, I have seen many better live performances. I recommend to watch Willy or Mink Deville.
