Thank you for putting out content for us to enjoy seeing Mortius being blown away by and being broken from! Congratulations on a job well done on both accounts!! Thank you!
hahahaha this was so much fun to watch! Also to answer your question about why I look especially short in that clip where we're dangling like puppets: I was the only one leaning forward and being a weird/crooked doll while the others were standing up straight, and it made my legs look superrrr short because of how the angles interacted with the green screen
Aaah...thanks, Peter...now I will go watch YOUR reaction, which I normally would do first, but when I saw Mortius' name pop up I automatically clicked on it. Good to see you here, as well as on your channel!
Perhaps, like me, Mortius has a touch of the ole bipolar...there are days when you can't PAY ME to keep me on track. It looks funny, but I have literally put a chair in the doorway of my kitchen to remind me not to wander out of the kitchen to "do one more thing"...take this pen to the living room, pet the cat in the bedroom, whatever, because once I'm distracted it could literally take hours for me to remember that I was working in the kitchen. Only funny if you are NOT cooking...stuff burns in the oven this way! Fortunately I have learned to see the humor in it, and give myself grace, but yeah...my brain is like a frog sittung on a hot griddle...it jumps every-damn-where.
There is no comparison between the TBG and VP videos and I mean that in absolutely the best way possible because they are both EXCEPTIONAL. So glad to see your reaction to this because the video and arrangement are just blowing me away!
I was a little thrown off when I saw TBG had done a cover of the same song with the same guest artist but after listening to both I was stunned because both are absolutely incredible for very different reasons!
I think that my favorite part of the final sequence was at 15:10, when the background voices were going "you-were-hi-ding, fin-'lly-found-you, looks-like-I-have-wooooooon", such a cool addition
I have to admit they did wonders. Her original singing of this in the stairwell was awesome but they just took it to the next level and it was awesome.
Something that happens when you cut out the middle register is wild. I've heard it called "Creepy Baby Music", where the entire middle is just muted, and you're only getting the highs and lows. It's the pairing of those two that makes things seem incredibly creepy, because our brains interpret high-note = not a threat, and low-note = threat, and you're getting both signals at once, without a range to smear things out in. It's horrifyingly creepy and I love it, and this song has it in SPADES.
Sharing these two covers back-to-back is a really good way to illustrate how much difference the arrangement can make, even when it's the exact same song, and the exact same lead singer. So, thanks, Mortius (and Mason)! One difference I've noticed (now that both versions are competing earworms in my head) is that Layne put in more rest beats between the musical phrases, and Marwan made the song a more continuous musical line.
This cover literally gave me chills...they did such an amazing job on it!! And I was honestly kind of creeped out it too because I don't really like horror either😅 Great reaction as always friend!💜
Don't know if you've been told yet but this is originally a Korean Vocaloid song that was later translated into English. The song is about a paranormal game called one man hide and seek where you summon a spirit into a doll and play hide and seek with it. Supposedly if the doll finds you the spirit gets to possess your body hence the line pay the consequence.
Long term vocaloid fan here! I can confirm this! If my memory is correct, Lizz Robinett (a still very popular name in the vocaloid cover community) is the person who sung the first english cover. Lizz's og cover is what got me into vocaloid and horror XD
Coming from a land where Halloween is imported from The States I am not use to the creepy season. Wacthing these song alongside you is quite amusing. I absolutly hate jump scares and your reaction to it mimiced mine. Beside that I just love it when you explain how the music work in teory. Thoank you so much.
Part of me loved how they ended it with "I just want to play a little..." Really creepily, but I wish there'd been a second blackout pause and then all the bassists combine their lowest notes at the end with "Gaaaaaaaaame" suspense vs satisfaction but I guess the former made more sense🤷
9:02 Before this i got so confused because i remember watching this before and i specificly remember this part but seeing you go past it around 3 times really confused me and i was going to comment about it but i just needed to wait a tiny bit longer
I don't like horror films either. The few I have seen, I cannot watch subsequent movies of the actors because the horror affected me so badly. I love Marwan putting the major "angel" two words, it is so awesome. Love you Mortius and Mason. Cheers!
09:01 That effect (panning the footsteps in the wrong direction) would be a pretty interesting technique to use to just heighten the sense of "things aren't quite right here" for the video.
It actually fits with what is on screen when you think about it. Lauren is singing 'I can hear you footsteps' and then they pass in front of her. From her perspective in the video they would actually pass from right to left so the song audio could be said to be from her perspective rather than the viewers.
Mortius ..., this youtube video has an old-school horror basic. The first horror movies in which Vincent Price has a major role had the same vibe. A theatrical style and black and white film. To bad I live far far away (the Netherlands) because I have a DVD house of wax with Vincent Price. It is very creepy, there is some gore, but the actors played amazing.
The Bass Gang does it again! Brrrrrr gave me the gollywobbles. Lauren has such a fantastic voice and is known as the staircase siren. Great reaction Mortius
Wow, Reviewing as an aerobic workout!! You were as much fun as the superb video. I, too, detest the horror genre...but bass voices are MADE for it, and so, it seems, are coloratura sopranos! Who knew?? This was superbly put together as a music video, AND Mason and yourself delivered an excellent product. I hope to be more financially solvent in the future so I, too, can get on Patreon and support my favorite entertainers, be they doctors, musicians, or reviewers. Blessed be!!
I love both VP and TBG! I thoroughly enjoyed hearing both versions of this song. I also appreciate Peter Barber’s breakdowns of both groups, among others. I also adore your breakdowns of these songs! I have ADHD too, so your way of reacting makes perfect sense to me.
Just as a total non sequitur, I was blown away by just how ENORMOUS Marwan's hands are in that one mind-melting low note. He drops his hand and spreads his fingers and holy frijole, Batman - his keyboard span must cover a huge range! (Looking it up, Rachmaninov had a 12-inch span, and was observed covering C-Eflat-G-C-G with his left hand. That's wide.)
Voiceplay did this sing in a ‘fun scary’ way, Bass Gang does it as ‘scary fun.’ Now, you need to do the trifecta and track down Lauren’s “Siren of the stairwell” so version she did a year or so before these.
Mortius, the three, three two that you were talking about is basically a triplet triplet duplet in the count. I was following what you were saying and as a musician myself (I play flute and I sing, and was a music minor in college) I understood what you were trying to say.
halfway through the vid atm. Very happy I've got Ice Cream with me... I definitely need it for this.. I really don't do spooky stuff either... But I'm liking it a lot!
Another job well done! Thank you, and Mason too, for the explanation of the 3 3 2 moments. Listening again after your explanation made it make sense. I know you don't like making reactions on different versions of the same song, but I think there is enough difference between the two that there really is not much comparing happening. That being said, I would love to see your reaction and analysis of The Parting Glass both by The Wellerman and by Tomi P. Same song, but very different versions. I think you would love them both. Thank you again for the wonderful reaction and analysis! Have fun unpacking and enjoy!
Hey Mortius, I think your tie knows what's up and is out of whack in sympathy with you! Maybe it hates jump scares too :) Thank you for your analysis (always interesting) and your reactions (always engaging)!
Amazing reaction mortius, always appreciate other music nerds understanding the complexities. You should react to their cover of bury a friend next, its super creepy and absolutely insane!
Some extra things: 13:54 rip Tomi G#1 Chest by Bobby at 6:07 Tomi hitting C#1 subharmonics (his lowest I believe a good example is near 11:08) and C#1 chest fry by Peter E3 chest by lauren Lauren in the background at 10:49 and Bobby looks like he's looking back Bobby hasnt blinked for the whole video Someone has said at 14:03 bobby hits a C1 but someone else has said it was something else(i forgot but it was around A1)
First, I want to thank you for not doing the compare and contrast thing. When there are two treatments that are so distinct, even though it’s the same song, I tend to think of them as two completely different pieces of music. It would truly be like comparing apples to pickles. It is hard for me to watch this because it creeps me out. The set reminds me so much of the movie The Shining that I have a lot of trouble watching it. If you have not seen the original, they have referred to it visually. In the original storyline the girl is the demon looking for the boy who is hiding. When she finds him he becomes a demon. So the scenes when the guys start taking over is really close to the storyline of the original. Not important I know, but it is interesting I think.
13:25 - I guess Vecna was evicted from the upside down. They had a bass battle and he lost. These are the rules. And now there will be no 5th Season of stranger things. Thanks Marv!
What you’re saying at 13:00. I think it’s an illusion caused by at just the “room now” adding an octave harmony to make it sound brighter, while the main line didn’t really change.
This might be not the normal content you review, but I have a music video you might enjoy. It's Mirror of souls by the band Theocracy. I recommend the version with (lyrics ENG/PT and slideshow) in the title as it has at least some form of visuals in it and although simple they are fitting. The reason why I recommend it is because it is less of a song and more so a musical story. And I really like it but I don't think I have ever seen someone actually analyze it from a musical perspective.
The best thing about this, is that it proves the Bass Gang is indeed capable of singing a song that has coherent (and I hesitate to say "meaningful", because it basically boils down to "boo", but in the technical sense, they do express a clear and obvious meaning) lyrics, as opposed to the phrase salads they'd been doing until now.
Thank you so much for the reaction! 🍌🍌🍌🍌🍌
Thank YOU so much for this Masterpiece!!

I was going to suggest that he go watch your reaction for just that explanation - plus all the other info you gave us on the video.
Aaah...thanks, Peter...now I will go watch YOUR reaction, which I normally would do first, but when I saw Mortius' name pop up I automatically clicked on it. Good to see you here, as well as on your channel!
Amazingly spooky 👻 video. Animation was superb. Musicality is off the hook.
Seeing you do a C#1 surprised me until I saw your analysis/reaction
I think the best 'creep factor' is Lauren's manic stare and threatening smile.
“Don’t like that! Don’t like that!
I don’t do horror!
Why does my tie keep going off center?”
That complete shift in topic had me rolling. 😂🤣😂🤣
@leslieholland7843 that cooking comment is why I put all cooking timers on my phone
Agree, agree
Both versions are just really good in different ways.
It's crazy how TBG and the VP songs are so different and both amazing that I didn't even compare them in my brain!
I feel voiceplays version is more Disney style horror, whereas this is more Vincent Price style horror
Thanks for supporting these amazing guys as individual artists and as The Bass Gang. Always enjoy watching you react and analyse their music.
This whole reaction is great but the "awful pause" is probably THE reason I've watched this 10+ times 😂
Cuddling the headphones for comfort… the real evidence of a poor unfortunate soul, in pain… in need
I wonder if Marwan had The Shining in mind when he did this. So much going on in this-definitely a work of art. I am so impressed!!
That's what I was thinking, too
Well I didn't need to sleep tonight. Nope, not sleeping at all. *locks EVERYTHING in the apartment and puts the couch in front of the door*
One creepy video, needs one hell of a reaction! Good job dude!!
I think that my favorite part of the final sequence was at 15:10, when the background voices were going "you-were-hi-ding, fin-'lly-found-you, looks-like-I-have-wooooooon", such a cool addition

just waiting, shivering, for one final jump scare, thinking, "But is it REALLY over...?" chills.
Don't know if you've been told yet but this is originally a Korean Vocaloid song that was later translated into English. Interesting
Edit: I went to listen to Lizz's rendition of the song and Lauren's voice was MADE for this song!!!
Both are exceptional!! Loved your reactions to both...Lauren is an astounding singer.
Coming from a land where Halloween is imported from The States I am not use to the creepy season. Wacthing these song alongside you is quite amusing. I absolutly hate jump scares and your reaction to it mimiced mine. Beside that I just love it when you explain how the music work in teory. Thoank you so much.

"We're about to spend hours on the last 30 seconds of this song."
Yes please!
Psychologically, the most effective jump scare is the one that never happens, but you dread and anticipate it!
So true!!
Thank you Mason, for the Coldplay example!
Thank you for the reaction and explanations Mortius. And the added example Mason.
Here from the bass gang fans, love the review, well done!
9:02 Before this i got so confused because i remember watching this before and i specificly remember this part but seeing you go past it around 3 times really confused me and i was going to comment about it but i just needed to wait a tiny bit longer

09:01 That effect (panning the footsteps in the wrong direction) would be a pretty interesting technique to use to just heighten the sense of "things aren't quite right here" for the video.
That is what I thought, it was intentional just to throw you off and amplify the discomfort
It actually fits with what is on screen when you think about it.

And that is how you properly drop the Bass. So glad for that ending. ❤

Fully body Mortius reactions! YES I loved it.
Mortius your reactions are sometimes more entertaining than what your watching, love your spontaneity ..
you've managed to not only have the worst possible pause but also have a genuinely hilarious pause as well in one video 🤣
You know the bass went low when the listener literally stoops down in response to hearing the notes
Near the end "Mortius.exe has stopped responding"
😂😂😂
They've absolutely smashed it yet again! Superb all round 👏 👌
Soon as I saw peters review, (patreon access) I knew "mortius is going to lose his mind .. again:
You kept pausing on the most TERRIFING FREEZE FRAMES.........HOW ON EARTH DID YOU MANAGE THAT
Marwan bungee'd to BENEATH THE BASEMENT on that note!
I love both VP and TBG! I thoroughly enjoyed hearing both versions of this song. I also appreciate Peter Barber’s breakdowns of both groups, among others. I also adore your breakdowns of these songs! I have ADHD too, so your way of reacting makes perfect sense to me.

Did you miss that in that shot his right hand has 6 fingers?
Horror is great if you’re in a theater full of teens. Just sit in the back and watch the popcorn fly.
Voiceplay did this sing in a ‘fun scary’ way, Bass Gang does it as ‘scary fun.’ Now, you need to do the trifecta and track down Lauren’s “Siren of the stairwell” so version she did a year or so before these.
Thank you! I mean I knew I wasn't the only one creeped out by this song, but your video truly showed me that I wasn't alone xD
Mortius, the three, three two that you were talking about is basically a triplet triplet duplet in the count. I was following what you were saying and as a musician myself (I play flute and I sing, and was a music minor in college) I understood what you were trying to say.
SHOOTIN THIS ONE AT YA MORTI YOU ARE DOING AMAZEING
This is so different from the rendition from Voiceplay, so I'm so glad that you did them both ❤️
You need to react to Tomi P's cover of "Lullaby of Woe", it is quite creepy as well.
truuuuuuuuuuuuu
I also don’t like horror movies so I’m glad you watched this so I could watch you to know what to expect 😅 amazing production and complexity!
Creepiness to the max, scary dissonant high and brown notes included
The Shining moment(s) in this video have to be the visuals
lit
You don't like horror? 👻 I would have never guessed. Lol. Such a fun reaction. Just what I needed. Love ya ❤️
halfway through the vid atm. Very happy I've got Ice Cream with me... I definitely need it for this.. I really don't do spooky stuff either... But I'm liking it a lot!
I should feel bad i am 5:20 in and laughing at your reactions (I have listened about 30 times in the last few hours :D)
This was actually my first time watching you... you were kinda adorable reacting to it and honestly watching your analysis added even more to it
I just watched it myself, very excited about your reaction!
You could say that pause mortified Mortius
Ayyy
Another job well done! Thank you, and Mason too, for the explanation of the 3 3 2 moments. Listening again after your explanation made it make sense. Your pauses made watching this video even creepier if that’s possible. 💀 Thankfully, I was able to watch Peter’s breakdown to calm down.
That 123 123 12 thing is called a tresillo and is in a lot of Latin music. 12tone explains it well.
The Voiceplay version was Haunted Mansion. This was the Shining. Both great, but definitely different flavors.
It's not a competition. Love all the great content coming out from a capella groups.
Hey Mortius, I think your tie knows what's up and is out of whack in sympathy with you! Maybe it hates jump scares too :) Thank you for your analysis (always interesting) and your reactions (always engaging)!
I really love to watch you full body reacting to these videos 🥰
T'was great seeing you in the preview, I definitely got just as freaked out lmao ;)
Amazing reaction mortius, always appreciate other music nerds understanding the complexities. You should react to their cover of bury a friend next, its super creepy and absolutely insane!
You should check out the Short of Bobby Bass and Lauren doing a duet intro of this song, goosebump inducing for sure.
Woooah you right the sound pan is backwards when they say I hear your footsteps
20:20 you're so shook here it's amazing.
Took me forever to realize that the footsteps are reversed because they are from Lauren's P.O.V.
OHHHHH
This is way better than VoicePlay's take. I'm impressed.
Omg I thought I was going crazy that the footsteps went the wrong way to them moving. I kept looking at my headphones like wait a second…
How is this the first time I have heard of these absolute vocal units?
Enjoy the rabbit hole, it’s a great one
Lauren's voice is so beautiful but watching her sing it is terrifying. 😆
The only bad thing about your standing desk is that I am afraid you will run away and leave us behind😉
5:00 I dunno, I think that was a perfect pause lol.
The way he sort of gagged when he saw it lmao
Some extra things:
13:54 rip Tomi
G#1 Chest by Bobby at 6:07
Tomi hitting C#1 subharmonics (his lowest I believe a good example is near 11:08) and C#1 chest fry by Peter
E3 chest by lauren
Lauren in the background at 10:49 and Bobby looks like he's looking back
Bobby hasnt blinked for the whole video
Someone has said at 14:03 bobby hits a C1 but someone else has said it was something else(i forgot but it was around A1)
There's something about creepy female characters that creep me out too Mortius
That pause was perfect! 😂
mayhap the vid is scaring your tie as well as turning you into a squeaky toy :p
13:25 - I guess Vecna was evicted from the upside down. They had a bass battle and he lost. These are the rules. And now there will be no 5th Season of stranger things. Thanks Marv!
Stairwell Siren at it again
Surprised you missed that the bass singer (Marwan) had 6 fingers on his right hand.
I think they broke our Mortius....Mortius are you okay?
This is so much fun.
I will be fully honest. the first time I ever heard this song was through Nightcore
Love the backdrop!
I have to say TBG's version is my favorite. I'm sorry you paused at like the creepiest part but love your reaction.
What you’re saying at 13:00. I think it’s an illusion caused by at just the “room now” adding an octave harmony to make it sound brighter, while the main line didn’t really change.
did Lauren go alto for a sec
This might be not the normal content you review, but I have a music video you might enjoy. It's Mirror of souls by the band Theocracy. I recommend the version with (lyrics ENG/PT and slideshow) in the title as it has at least some form of visuals in it and although simple they are fitting.
The reason why I recommend it is because it is less of a song and more so a musical story. And I really like it but I don't think I have ever seen someone actually analyze it from a musical perspective.
While I do very much enjoy their cover, I do agree, I wish Lauren had been mixed back juuuust a bit to hear the guys a bit more
The best thing about this, is that it proves the Bass Gang is indeed capable of singing a song that has coherent (and I hesitate to say "meaningful", because it basically boils down to "boo", but in the technical sense, they do express a clear and obvious meaning) lyrics, as opposed to the phrase salads they'd been doing until now.
It's because you're not wearing a tie-clip, Mortius..
Also I hear the thing with the footsteps sounding like they're coming from the wrong direction.
This reaction has the most 'muppet energy' I've ever seen.
