- Part of the material shot by Media Source for an upcoming episode of the TV show "Unsung" on cable network TV One. This is a musical tribute performed by high school students at the Stax Music Academy for three members of the groundbreaking Stax Records band The Bar-Kays: original band members Ben Cauley and James Alexander, and lead singer Larry Dodson. Ben Cauley was the only survivor of the 1967 plane crash that killed four members of The Bar-Kays, along with Stax legend Otis Redding.
In this video, the Stax Academy students perform The Bar-Kays' first smash hit, "Soul Finger," the name of which was coined by Stax great Isaac Hayes.
One of my favorite party jams from back in the day. I was heart broken when we lost them along with Otis Redding😢 I still play their music to this day God Bless them and THANKYOU for the music !!!🙏♥️
And who is the one prick who voted a thumbs down. Even if you're not a fan of the song you shouldn't condemn the kids who performed an excellent tribute to the Barkays.
RIP Ben Cauley. This man perservered through life challenges none of us could even imagine. His life definitely needs to be remembered and celebrated.
You kids did a MAGNIFICENT JOB honoring the Barkays, my dad was soooo proud. God bless! ~Shuronda Cauley
You're Pops is a LEGEND

Absolutely, loved your dad, Ben. I'm from Memphis. I live in Raleigh now He gave me my first trumpet.
The original STAX rhythm section couldn't be touched---glad to see these young people performing a classic. The STAX School is amazing.
I first heard this track in the 1960's and I still think that it's cool
Nice guitar solo. Celebrating Soul Finger looking at 1967 hit chart, it was #17 on August 12, 1967!!!
This was awesome tribute to the Barkays! This here, one of my favors!
These kids nailed it!!!!
This is my favorite Bar Kay's song.
WOW, WHAT ASHAME. TO ALL THERE FAMILY, FRIENDS, AND FAN . MAY THEY ALL REST IN PEACE. MY HIGH SCHOOL PLAYED THIS JAMN. INSTEAD OF SOUL FINGER, THEY WOULD SAY GO MILLER. I WASN'T IN HIGH SCHOOL YET, BUT OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL TOOK US TO THE PEP RALLY. THANK YOU GUY THE BAR - KAYS. MAY THEY LIVE ON FOR EVER
One of the things I'm grateful for in my life was being able to see Mr. Booker T. Jones live, for free in an annual festival in the 2000s... I live in Brazil, I thought I was gonna die without seeing any of the musicians from Stax live!
Stax changed my live in my teenager years... The Bar-Kays, The Mar-Keys and The MG's changed my perspective of listening to soul as art. I still remember the first I listened to "Green Onions" and "Bush Bash." Also I grew up unconsciously listening to "Boot-Leg" since Brazilian soul singer Tim Maia used it as basis for his funk "Sossego" ("Time-Out") since he was a huge fan.
I can't listen to Otis Redding's whistling in "Dock of the Bay" without thinking about these pioneers and my teenage years.
What a beautiful positive uplifting song. Great performance.
@The1platinum1 I'd love to visit that school. Soulfinger was out when I was in 7th grade. We partied a while on that song as kids! It was such a sad period when news of the plane crash got out. We kids were all devasted that one of our favorite groups and Singer Otis had passed. Stax was one of our great musical families that kept our lives so happy in the 60's with hit after dancing and singing hit! I still play them today as if the songs just came out! Congratulations on your schooling there!
love it, almost in tears
it does doesn't it especially seeing Ben Cauley playing his Trumpet.
Tears of joy
more stax please
Yeah Baby Memphis in the House ❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
You guys did an awesome job on this song. I’ve always wanted to one day dance off Soul Finger but I can’t seem to get my steps together. Lol.
Great performance! something to be proud of... love it

I wished I could have played this jam back when I was in high school!
R.I.P Ben Cauley God Bless you man you were the only Survivor of that plane Crash James Alexander would've been on that same plane with y'all but it was over crowded.

Rest in resurrection Otis Jimmy Carl Ronnie Phalon Ben you will never be forgotten I was 6 years old when this classic was released and I wore it out on the blue spot when I was aloud to play records😊😊😊
The plane crash left a big hole in their family’s life also Stax and music as a whole what a riddim section as they say in Jamaica and hearing all this mediocre hyped corporate garbage which pass
beautiful!
good job, love it
Really Cool Loved the Performance
GOLDFINGER!!! sounds good!!
I want my son to go to Staxx!!
It's Soulfinger, not Goldfinger.

I got chills but in a good way
Spies like us bought me here
This is Amazing
my daughter plays at stax now
oh yea this is good, its a nice redition, it helps to have one of the origionals though, and some deep ol soul and funk music, and have the right tempo.
i heard that Stax was a regular contributor to The Panthers, when that plane went down the company never recovered ....................... you don't think .......... nah they wouldn't.. would they................. remember Martin ,Medgar and malcolm . you think they didn't!
You can’t kill dreams , ideas and determination ! Martyrs !
❤
Four of the six members died. It was not all of them.
@ImPrettyDammit its soulfinger and thats a good school because i go there and ive had so many great experiences there so its ideal for your offspring

How Fun ! by Angie
You gotta know the dance steps, and sing with the song when you ain't playin'....
Who chose this tempo? Horrifically fast.
And their mother.
Ah Zoulfingur!
As I was saying garbage passed for music which is based on technology not talent bring back real Soul music!! Jazz blues R&B 1946-55 and of course soul shaped pop music in all its guises from rock and roll even psycadelic which artist took some inspiration from the late Eric Dolphy check out Out to Lunch LP which some of those artists sight as a inspiration,no Soul music most of the better records which was sampled and plagiarised would not be hits from the 80s onwards things got corporate and mediocre big up the Bar Kay’s Otis Sam Curtis Brother Ray etc Soul Finger is classical music as Kind of blue Love Supreme Heard it through the grapevine etc Never Forgotten...
Not one person, here, better have trouble getting gigs......!
This makes Rap look like Crap
