I went to this when they came to Pensacola, Fl. This was one of the best showcases I have ever seen and experienced. I'll never forget it. All it takes is hearing one of those songs to take right back there.

Stax and Motown were revolutionary in so many things they brought to pop music. Growing up in the segregated South in the 1960’s their music broke many color barriers as we began to realize that we all had much more in common than we were told.

@@chasbodaniels1744 In my area, you did not here Otis on AM radio. They did play black artists like Motown, Atlantic, some Stax, others, but it was mostly mainstream rock n' roll, Beatles, Beach Boys...
I recently saw something John Lee Hooker or Muddy Waters said about Otis. He basically said that Otis had a command over the audience like no other and he was a natural performer.
I dunno about that. They were great, but Jamerson, Willis, Grant, Messina, and Coffey were writing and layin' down some unforgettable rhythmic riffs, up the road a ways, in a place called Motown, about the same time.
New music sucks so bad that I bet if somebody put this kind of stuff on the radio a lot of young people would love it. It's truly timeless. It's time for another revolution, why not start with the music! 🙂

Motown/Gordy/Tamla/Soul was a big part of my 45 RPM record collection, not as many Stax, none by Otis ~ went straight to much played LPs for him. I also loved James Brown, Wilson PIckett, Little Anthony & the Imperials ~ I could not say I love type of music over the other. When I categorized my records I decided R & B, Soul was my preferred gene ~ music I loved enough to buy.
It's a treat to see the unrestrained joy shown by Donald "Duck" Dunn and Steve Cropper as they back Otis and Sam & Dave. They're having a helluva good time.
It's really great to actually see all these soul stars play these songs! I couldn't help playing Green Onions over and over - what a rhythm section and what a lesson in how to drive a 4/4 beat!!!

The crowd was told by security not to move around and dance. That irritated Otis as well as Sam and Dave. That's why they cranked it up at the end of the songs. You can see the security try and move in.
@Cynthia Langley I haven't reached that part yet of Sam and Dave's performance here...but I don't think it is the mind boggling energy, dancing, singing, and their all and all that was in their performance that truly showcased their jaw dropping dance moves working up a hellacious sweat giving their all and all that is unforgettable and hopefully all those who appreciate and enjoy that rare type of talent. If you haven't seen Sam & Dave's performance where they sing "Hold On, I'm Coming", please do yourself an unforgettable favor and type that right here in the YB search, make sure it's the video where they're performing before an audience. I'm assuming that event took place in the middle or late 1960s. It is an epic performance and it is mesmerizing right up to the very end. Damn they sure could entertain. Speaking of moves, Otis Redding is also stunningly mesmerizing. What an incredibly talented, handsome man. So fine indeed. .

Hi Thanks for putting this video up, I hope as a south London Mod at this era .Was in the Tigers Head pub in 1967 when the DJ announced that Otis and some of the band had died in a plane crash ,I drank myself under the bar with grief .From an 74 year old man who lived every minute of this era👍

I was stationed in south side Virginia in 67-68. I went out to clubs every weekend..the bands all seemed to have this style and format. It was a great time for live music..
Stax music and its artists remind me of the spontaneous Saturday afternoon gatherings in my grandparent's backyard - red soda pop, stacks of BBQ, fried chicken, greens with some fatback - Durkee's Red Hot sauce and Heinz white vinegar with cornbread - my grandparents and older relatives, each with laugh that made us kids laugh even harder than they were laughing, shouting to cousins "do that one dance like we used to do," or putting that one child on top of the Coleman Cooler to do 'The James Brown.' Sometimes He's get carried away and attempt the splits - knocking the cooler open as he fell backwards spilling chunks of ice along with the Mickey's Big Mouth Beer, Shasta Cola, and Coors. Then the 45 stack would drop 'Green Onions,' my grandfather's favorite song, he'd tilt his hat and slowly start moving his head from side to side to the drum beat - then he'd start moving his shoulders up and down with the bass as he slowly walked towards my grandmother who pretended that she wasn't in the mood to dance but after 1 minute she'd bite her bottom lip and start doing the most energetic Shing-a-ling i'd seen. We watched as 'Green Onions' transported them back to their young adulthood! Then The Staples Singers 'Come Go With Me' would play and everyone let out a collective "Allllllright Now! Ahhh Yeah," which was an invitation for everyone to start moving like a church at 11am on Sunday morning. That's the power of Stax. There is nothing like authentic Soul Music.
I've seen Otis Redding perform on film (Monterey Pop, etc.), but this video is when I realized his immense talent. And such a natural singer with on-point phrasing and rhythm.

Cardiff Top Rank Ballroom 1967. The Stax Tour was the best show ever performed there. So grateful that we had the chance to attend. Will never forget it.

The unique sounds of STAX records in the 60s was my favorite. Never quite made it to the numbers that Motown did, but thay had that QUALITY!
WONDERFUL moment in time and piece of history. NOT one band or musician today compares to these ARTISTS. Booker T & the MGs are simply AMAZING.

Cardiff Top Rank Ballroom 1967. The Stax Tour was the best show ever performed there. So grateful that we had the chance to attend. Will never forget it.
