    In this piano tutorial, I show you a seriously funky left hand groove. It is a bass line that you can use over chords minor 1 and minor 4.
    We look at it in the key of Cm, so the chords are Cm and Fm. You can play whatever voicings you like, but I demonstrate what I use as a basic framework.
    Once you've learned how to play the bass line in the left hand, you can really start to play around with it. Change where you place the chords, change the rhythm around, add extra little bass fills... the list is endless!
    If you have any questions, just leave a comment below.

    Great groove, love it. The Fm chord can also be played F Ab C Eb in which case it is same voicing the the Cm chord, just 1 tone below (helps focus on the left hand and less so on right hand :-)

    • @Piano_Pig
      @Piano_Pig  6 років тому +1

      Reading sheet music is an important skill to have, by it is not necessary. I personally think learning music with your ears is far more beneficial, and if this is what you find more interesting then learn this way! Much better to have good ears than be good at reading sheet music!

    Quick question about the sus11 - if the minor 3rd is raised a tone to the 4th, which makes it a sus chord, and the 11th is only an 11th if you've also go the 7th and 9th in there (Is that right?), then what makes this a sus11 rather than just a Cm11 voicing? Is it the lack of the minor 3rd?

    • @Piano_Pig
      @Piano_Pig  6 років тому

      Yes, the lack of the third is what makes it a sus chord. We can't call it major or minor since it is the 3rd that tells us that information

    Another one - the chromatic descent at the end of the first part I'm finding the fingering you're using really odd and unfamiliar. Although reaching the G with the ring finger is much easier than with the middle finger, crossing the middle finger over the ring finger seems really strange. Is it just a case usually of using whatever will allow you to get to and from where you need to be most easily?

    • @Piano_Pig
      @Piano_Pig  6 років тому +1

      I would just do whatever feels the most comfortable and natural for you. Everyone might prefer different things and there is no right or wrong way!

    • @MrMargaretScratcher
      @MrMargaretScratcher 6 років тому

      Cheers!
      Right now I'm recovering from surgery on my back, so I'm having to practise whilst laying down, with a keytar strapped round my knees. It's surprisingly practical, well, as far as not being able to sit or stand for long periods is concerned. So yeah, comfortable is a very relative term for me right now.
      I'll experiment, I find with fingering it's all about that 'This seems more awkward right now, but will it eventually be less awkward than how I was doing it initially?' kind of balance. I've had things where I've shied away from trying to change my fingering because I'm used to it a certain way, spending ages frustrated trying to make it work that way, then finally caving in and spending much less time just getting used to a much more logical but unfamiliar fingering, and being able to play whatever it is much easier in a much shorter period of time.
      Basically, the quick/easy way is sometimes the long/hard way.

      They are chords 1 and 4 if you look at it in the key of C minor, but if you choose to view it in Eb major, you could call them 6 and 2. It makes more sense to call them 1 and 4 in my opinion.

    Why is it a C sus 11? Isn’t the F just an 11th and not a sus? It seems redundant.
    My rule is that if there is a seventh in the cord then the F would be an 11th and if there is no seventh it would be a sus. But I can’t say that’s based on any new rule I’ve read.
    I love the baseline, but I wouldn’t call it funky.

    Man, you need a different piano stand. Your setup is so wobbly and shaky. Didn't you grow up playing with an acoustic piano? Such wobbling tends to be very annoying when you develop technique with a stable keyboard. When my digital piano wobbles a little I cannot concentrate until I fix it.
