Great light up. I’m addicted to these and the pressure lamps. I generally get mine at car boot sales or antique stores. The ones with embossed globes are well worth collecting.

Lovely little video. I have 2 of these 'Tropic' lanterns. one was a birthday gift from a brother in law back in the 1990's. the other was only purchased a few months ago on Ebay so I could have a matching pair. another brand of these lamps that I love are the Feuerhand (pronounced foyer-hand ) lanterns, which I also have several of.

    Brilliant John
I've just fetched two out of these out of my deceased grandads garage (he's been dead for 30 years, they used to use them on the railway)

Thanks John. I think these lamps are brilliant. I’ve two in the shed. Sometimes we forget you don’t need the most modern equipment to give you the most satisfaction.

Well-done John you made a video about the lamp:) Yes they are simple but there is a bit more going on than you may think.
These lanterns work on the Cold air (aka Cold blast) system.
These lamps are the shape they are for a reason, the air supply to the wick actually comes from the shroud and is not drawn in from the base.
A small amount of air does come in from the base and circulates on the inside of the glass, (Probably to help in keeping the glass clean) but the actual burner draws air in via convection currents from the shroud which then passes downwards along the tube's /supports either side of the lamp.
These tubes seem to go into the fuel reservoir but infact there is a hollow section there which feeds the convected air directly to the base of the burner which helps to make the flame brighter.
You may notice the effect when you close the glass down over the burner!
Light the lamp and observe the yellow flame for a moment, then close the lamp down and notice how the flame suddenly goes brighter.
There was another version that was popular but superseded by the Cold blast system and that was the "Hot blast" Lamp. These took the burner air supply from the hot exhaust/ chimney and fed it back to the burner, but there being less oxygen present meant the lamp didn't burn as brightly.
These Cold air (Blast) Storm lanterns are wonderful inventions, the only downside is they are a bit smelly when using paraffin and in a confined space, there are other fuels available, certain odourless lamp oils and one which has a "Citronella" additive which will keep mosquitoes and midges at bay.
Enjoy your lamp and if I don't see a video from you before Christmas I wish you a Peaceful, Happy and Merry one:)
    Sandy

since the accepted age for an antique is 100 years + I think vintage is a more accurate term. Nice video, thanks for posting. Do you have any other lanterns in your collection you might care to share with us?

@@johnpawson7400 well I am a year older than your lantern and I would not appreciate anyone calling me an antique though some probably have. Thanks I will look forward to your new lantern video. I happen to like little lanterns like the Tropic and the Gremlin, Veritas have a small one about tropic size also. I especially like lanterns between 6 - 7 1/2 inches tall not sure there were any British flat wick Kerosene/Paraffin lanterns of that size though. There would be bicycle lamps but those are not quite the same as lanterns like your Tropic. The Dietz Comet is a very nice 8 1/2" tall American lantern now available as the Dietz no.50 Comet was made off shore first in Hong Kong and now is made in mainland China. This is the lantern that the Petromax HL1 was copied after in case you are familiar with the Petromax. Thanks for your reply.

What a bonny wee video John, 1956 was the year I was born, so I relate to your lamp. When I was 11 I started work sweeping up in our local timber yard/ hardware store after school each evening and they still sold these then., but they were silver in my day. Seeing you priming up and lighting brought back happy memories, Cheers B.D Scotland

Ebay is a good starting place, that is where I got some and an army surplus store for the military one.
