Yeah the PS2 and Gamecube versions are arcade perfect in gameplay and performance, only difference is like resolution (at least on PS2), lacking wheel support, and the cabbies being changed to the voice actors they had in 2 and onward, which do a great job and most don't seem to notice. The controls being worse in them is a lie; it's based on personal preference. Heck even the current world record holder played on PS2 and finds them to be the same. It's not like they're better than the Dreamcast version, they're just pretty much identical.
Oddly enough, the iOS version was really well done. No Pizza Hut or KFC but you get the original soundtrack, perfect performance and some excellent modified touch screen controls (or gyro controls if you're nuts).
I found myself playing this while sitting in a hospital waiting room recently (nothing serious). Dreamcast emulation on the GPD XD is wonderful thing. The staff looked at me a bit oddly, but what the heck :D

This was a HUGE part of my childhood right here! My brother had a Dreamcast (I have it now lol), and we both ALWAYS played this game growing up. We still never get tired of the sheer chaos from ramming into cars and pedestrians running out of the way. XD The best parts for us were situations like when you'd end up driving underwater, trying to go as fast as you can, and because of various difficulties you'd run out of time. Meanwhile your customer shouts "YOU SUCK! LOOK AT THE TIME! *jumps out of the taxi to their death*", and then you just roll right along, picking up another customer that's hanging out underwater like it's nothing. It's just the right amount of randomness for me to still love it after all these years. ^u^/
When I went exploring through outback Australia, I came to a roadhouse in the middle of nowhere. 250Km from the nearest town. There, sparkling in the corner, was a crazy taxi arcade machine... for some reason. Much fun was had :)
This video brings me memories from he past when shopping centers and gas stations had arcade machines. And of course, great review as always. Sega understood the arcade well in the turn of millennium with the Virtua Cop-, House of the Dead -series, Crazy Taxi and 18 Wheeler: American Pro Trucker. 18 Wheeler had the same feeling of speed like in Crazy Taxi but also had weight into it with the enormous steering wheel.
Midtown Madness to me is like a lost GTA game, I know there's a connection between them, the studio that made the game is now a rockstar studio, the timing isn't quite right but whenever I play Midtown madness, it makes me think of GTA 3. There's got to be a deeper connection than that.
Did you know there's still a (somewhat) active community of Midtown Madness 1/2 players, that even release mods for both games? Google Midtown Madness 2 Extreme ;)
+Frank B I see what you mean, but there's no connection between GTA and Midtown Madness. Midtown Madness was developed by Angel Studios, which later became Rockstar San Diego. Rockstar San Diego are known for the Midnight Club series, not GTA. The GTA games are developed by Rockstar North (formerly called DMA Design). Midtown Madness has no connection with Midnight Club and GTA, since the license to Midtown Madness is owned by Microsoft, not Rockstar Games. Also, fun fact: Midtown Madness 3 was not developed by Angel Studios, but by DICE, which are now known for the Battlefield and Mirror's Edge series.
I did a little more research and looked at who worked on what and it seems a few technical people who worked at Angel Studios worked on the original midnight club game for rockstar. a game released in 2000, a year before GTA 3. That's enough of a connection for me, they obviously poached some talent from Angel Studios to work on GTA 3.

Most games my dad used to hate watching. He said they "were boring to watch" and "were all the same" This is one of the few he absolutely loved to watch and still mentions from time to time.
Crazy Taxi is one of the most replayable arcade games that Sega has ever made. This is actually one of my gripes about Sega consoles. As their main attractions were usually Sega arcade games, the (often carbon copy, no frills added) home ports made me realize how limited they were in terms of replayability: Daytona USA and Sega Rally, for instance, both only had a handful of tracks to race on, and the replayability lied solely in learning how to master every nuance of those tracks. It's a brilliant idea when you're trying to eat quarters, but it doesn't make for a good console game. Virtua Cop, Virtua Cop 2, Confidential Mission, even Die Hard Arcade, all of these games are GOOD games, but they're just not very long because they're made with an arcade mindset where the goal is to get you to have fun for a short amount of time and then put more quarters into the machine to continue. When you don't have that monetary limitation, it's easy to blast through them because they're not expansive. (Side note: I believe Sega could have enhanced these games for home use, either by adding gameplay modes or adding content, or both, but they almost never chose to do that.) I'd argue that Crazy Taxi also isn't that expansive, as the home version just consists of you doing more of the same on the same level. But the concept and how they use it lends to massive replay. The map is fairly large, your fares are always changing, and there's a plethora of things to utilize (ramps) or learn about the game (the various maneuvers) that you can hone to extend your play. And there's a charm even in the presentation of NPCs which is a critically overlooked aspect of many games. This game can give fares a good amount of character in a very short amount of time, from what they say when you pick them up to what they say when you're driving. It's really engaging, at least it is to the extent that it affects how I drive a particular passenger, which is saying a ton about a basic "arcade game." Even the drivers, who amount to nothing more than handling and speed characteristics, tend to have a personality of their own. Crazy Taxi might well be the best arcade game that translates into a fun, replayable home game that was ever made. Seriously. And while you dislike Crazy Box, I actually love it, because it's a challenge mode, a mode that forces you to learn how to execute these moves to perfection in order to advance, which in turn makes the arcade mode more fun! Because the better you get at the maneuvers the farther you can go! As much as I love Daytona USA and Sega Rally, they never had anything close to this. You just learned the tracks and the handling and that was it. I think outside of owning a full arcade unit (I'm going to start my arcade cab collection just as soon as I win Powerball, just kidding, I don't buy lottery tickets), the Dreamcast port is by far the one to go with. The PC version had the potential to best it, but it was obviously a low-budget port, so I'm glad I still own it and the Dreamcast. To be honest, I see no reason to play any of my Dreamcast titles on anything but the Dreamcast. Anyone who had the opportunity to buy a DC and didn't should be kicking themselves, it's such a great console. It is, BY FAR, my favorite Sega console, and one of my favorite consoles EVER. Crazy Taxi on PC just goes to show, PC ports aren't always the best. Too bad, it could have been, but oh well. All in all, Crazy Taxi is just an impressive arcade game from every aspect, and makes for a damn fine home game as well. Not too many arcade games have this kind of lasting replayability, and while the PC port is obviously flawed, it's better than no Crazy Taxi. I love my Dreamcast and I love the DC port of it, and I will continue to play it as long as my DC will read the disc! Might very well be the best Sega home port ever! Also, one last thing, I love the original soundtrack and I cannot play the game without it. I'm really weird about music in games, so just chalk it up to that.
Well, just use LGR's advice about swapping mp3s around. I cant remember when and I forgot the sub title but there was some crazy taxi game with crazy taxi 1 2 and 3 altogether and it was fucking awesome
It's Vojin Gamer! Done that, though the youtube version wasn't the best and sounded thrash when playing the game. I did get the originals in full quality on the iOS version though.
Meloe haze It was! one of those old banana boxes that where made long before I was born and multiple Cd's in small cd cartridges that weren't original.
Great video, I loved to play this game! I guess you never cleared all the Crazy Box missions, but if you do you'll unlock a secret tricycle taxi. You can also use that same trick to start without a wheel spin while driving, to get a speed boost. Otherwise, great and fun video!
I think this was the first videogame I ever played. My dad got it when I was probably 3 or 4 and I would play it on his work computer with him. I think I just slammed into walls the entire time but I guess that's all I needed to do to have fun back then. I assume he got some later version of it because I don't remember him ever having a big box and it definitely had the Offspring/Bad Religion soundtrack. Anyway thanks for making this video
I'd agree if I didn't have it on the OG xbox, which also had the original soundtrack and ran perfectly, and the DC controller wasn't a disaster to use for more than an hour. Nintendo: We've officially made the least intuitive to use controller ever (n64) Sega: Hold my beer. Let's make a even bigger oddly shaped controller that would only fit properly in the hands of a NBA star or a giant, and put a tamagotchi in it, oh let's also put the cord on the controller backwards because reasons. Note: Even the size didn't make the DC controller less usable than the n64 one though so I will give them credit there, the backwards cord still makes no sense to me. It was decent to use though and some of the size was excused by the VMU. I prefer the layout/style of a Xbox controller more though.
I have always loved Crazy Taxi. As a kid I would always play the arcade game and I will always remember when my parents bought me the PS2 port. I've actually owned the original 3 times, getting the PS2 port, the iOS port, and the Steam PC port. I also own Crazy Taxi 2 on the Dreamcast and Crazy Taxi 3: High Roller on the original Xbox. Something cool about Crazy Taxi 3 is that it actually features the arcade map for Crazy Taxi 1 and the map for Crazy Taxi 2 with their original drivers/cabs, improved graphics, and the same songs that were in the originals. I love this series and hope it comes back one day, but until then I'll enjoy the classics.
I just played this at the TA Travel Center in Boise, Idaho. I must say the arcade build quality held up great 20 years later. Bright screen, tight steering, and fun !!
you just saved me money with getting the steam version. I didn't know about these problems until you mentioned them, so thank you very much for warning us!
yeah, all the dreamcast fanboys were always telling how much better the dreamcast was over the playstation, but then came up with crazy taxi as an example... i still dont understand cause it seems to me this game might maybe be fun for 30 minutes, but then i would likely not touch it again for weeks
It certainly isn't my favourite console ever, far from it, but there were some great games on the DC. Soul Caliber, Shenmue, Ready 2 Rumble, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Resident Evil Code Veronica, Jet Set Radio, Metropolis Street Racer, Skies of Arcadia to name some of the top of my head.
Wow your imitation of the announcer was spot-on! I didn't know there was a PC port, but no regrets as the original sound track was waaaaaaaaay better :)
You remind me of my childhood me and my uncle usually had hardwere stuff like these we usually play around with those stuff and pass the time playing such games etc ..man those times were so great
I flippin' loved this game. So simple, yet, so satisfying. I worked at a movie theater for a number of years and we had his game. Needless to say, I play the living crap out of this and loved every second of it. I wasn't the best at the game, but I still had fun.
my wife and I used to drive about 30-40 min across town to play this on the arcade back when we where dating and newly weds... also got it on the ps2... we still have it and will pull it out from time to time... love that game :)
The interesting thing is that I have the game on PC. It was included on a cereal box. The version I have (based on the European version, which was published by Empire Interactive) had the Crazy Box removed (and possibly the Original mode). It also had an issue where the Intel GMA card I had on my now old and dead desktop PC couldn't render the textures, resulting in a white models with black lines.
Haha. Crazily accurate impression. As far as I can tell the Android version includes the original soundtrack. I might be wrong, though the "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah" song is definitely in there. Runs okay on Android 4.4.4 (can get a little choppy but it's just that my smartphone is a little underpowered when it comes to 3D performance), and you could also force anti-aliasing in Developer settings. I'm sure your Samsung can handle it, Clint. Best wishes. Love your content.
I remember playing crazy taxi many moons ago when computer monitors were big and bulky wight boxes that where always warm to the touch. It's been so long since I've played it and I'll have to pick up a copy of it for PC and Console.
Ton of nostalgia for me, this game. First played it at a car show in Birmingham in 1999, where they had a line of Dreamcasts (being 8 and a PS1 owner at the time, the DC was like a mythical superconsole to me). It was the first game I got on PS2, as well. It's sad when the iOS version runs as well as the PC port, but I do think it's still worth owning an old Dreamcast, and Crazy Taxi 1 and 2 are big reasons why. Great game. YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH
I used to play this game at a laundromat. Yes, that IS about as exciting as it sounds. This game was my one solace from the mundane act of laundry with old people. Loved it! :)
I LOVE this game! My sister and I used to take turns and play. We would also get ready for school really quick so we could have 10 minute turns before school. We had a steering wheel and pedals too. I currently have it for my phone, the app is really great! This is definetely a staple of my childhood. May or may not quote a lot of the dialogue in my everyday life. "Watch it fool!" "Son, you nearly KILLED me!" "Hey could ya park a lil closer?" "*squeaky voice* Watch it! You nearly killed me!" hahahahaha I could go on for hours. :)
P.S. I love the soundtrack to this game! But that's because I played it so much! I went as far as to put it on my phone so I could listen to it while I played it on my phone LOL
Yeah, I have this on PSP. My sister from Germany when she comes to Serbia she liked playing it. I mastered the game's mechanics. I like the tactic the most where you needed to quickly put it in reverse and then put it to forward and hit the pedal to the metal for a huge speed boost. It is awesome :D
I love Crazy Taxi! First played it in the arcade at London's Trocaderro centre. Then played the heck out of the PC version around 10 years ago when it was already old, after finding it in a charity (thrift) store. It wasn't your big box version, it was on a compilation with some other titles.
They had a Crazy Taxi Arcade Machine at the Mayfair Hotel in Jersey. Had such a blast on it, I went and brought the Dreamcast version (the US version for it's awesome cover).
I only owned crazy taxi 3, which was added to some magazine about video games and technology in a small cardboard-like packaging. I have no idea how it ended up in my house since I was a 10 old girl and lived only with my 1 year older sister and mom. But from what I see crazy taxi 1 and 3 are very similar, they just added 2 new maps. I loved that game, even now I remember every detail in West Coast :) I wish I could have played the original one, but I was 3 in 1999!
I used to play the heck out of this game with my sister when we were kids. we would also mute the sound of music and play a radio channel in my country. Good times.
My Crazy Taxi copy for the PC, didn’t have the original music, instead it was happy hardcore-ish music, then I found the track list: Dj Skudero - Fluor Kim Ono - Big in Japan Kuantize - Overflow J&J DJ’s & Jordy Beat & Xavi Avaló - La Festa vol. 2 2 Robots - Sister Golden Hair RMX 2002 Klubbheads - Turn Up The Bass (Speeded up to 175 BPM)
You've probably been asked and answered this before, but what are your thoughts on Planet Coaster and RCTWorld? Do you think you'll do a review or even a comparison of the two since they're coming out at the same time?

I love my Dreamcast and I love the DC port of it, and I will continue to play it as long as my DC will read the disc! Might very well be the best Sega home port ever! Also, one last thing, I love the original soundtrack and I cannot play the game without it. I'm really weird about music in games, so just chalk it up to that.
I remember spending hours on this game when I was younger... Awesome video as per normal :)
Damn, I have this copy! I thought the music was bootleg because I got it in a box with 400 other 1993-2003 games 8 years ago.
must have been one hell of a box!!
Meloe haze
It was! one of those old banana boxes that where made long before I was born and multiple Cd's in small cd cartridges that weren't original.
Cool bro!
I still come back to this review occasionally since your clear passion for the game just comes through crystal clear.
a) I want to and b) I feel like it
I love how unapologetic and honest you are. you do you
I remember playing this a lot on the PS2. Listening to The Offspring and Bad Religion while crashing through the city was really fun.
you post some of the best content out of all the people i'm subbed to. love the nostalgia. thanks for the content :)
This brought up so many memories playing this with my brother and his friends on the Nintendo Game Cube! Awesome!
Oh my god.. I used to have this game on GameCube.
Love this, brings me back. Around the same time I was playing Rush 2 on N64. To me, Rush 2 had more to return to. That was also a great game.
Great video, I loved to play this game! I guess you never cleared all the Crazy Box missions, but if you do you'll unlock a secret tricycle taxi. You can also use that same trick to start without a wheel spin while driving, to get a speed boost. Otherwise, great and fun video!
There is now a port to mobile devices with the original soundtrack. I have it on my iPad. It’s a good thing to play to relive nostalgia
I love your Crazy Taxi voice, wish I could do that!
Did it make you chuckle?
I think this was the first videogame I ever played. My dad got it when I was probably 3 or 4 and I would play it on his work computer with him. I think I just slammed into walls the entire time but I guess that's all I needed to do to have fun back then.
I assume he got some later version of it because I don't remember him ever having a big box and it definitely had the Offspring/Bad Religion soundtrack.
Anyway thanks for making this video
I have it on Dreamcast, hands down the best port of the game. An absolute blast to play.
I'd agree if I didn't have it on the OG xbox, which also had the original soundtrack and ran perfectly, and the DC controller wasn't a disaster to use for more than an hour.
Nintendo: We've officially made the least intuitive to use controller ever (n64)
Sega: Hold my beer.
I was addicted to this on the Dreamcast as a kid. Great stuff. I don't think I ever played it using the wheel, though.
thank you for the captions!
damn I remember playing this on PC as a kid
I had the PC version but it wasn't as much fun as the Dreamcast version
I hated when the customers would curse. You hit a car and they call you a dumbass.
Holy crap, you're good at that pseduo Wolfman Jack announcer voice. You and Jon Bailey should have an Epic Voice-off sometime. ;-)
I love the main menu tune so much, Change the world is one of my favourite Offspring songs
The only version I've played was the Game Cube version, it was fun, but a bit of a 'throwaway arcade experience'...
yeah, all the dreamcast fanboys were always telling how much better the dreamcast was over the playstation, but then came up with crazy taxi as an example... i still dont understand cause it seems to me this game might maybe be fun for 30 minutes, but then i would likely not touch it again for weeks
The Dreamcast was the only game console I ever sold, and I don't regret it for a minute. Couldn't find a single game worth playing on that thing.
i had the ps2 version...and i liked it, but it sucked. as far as crazy taxi goes...the dreamcast version was arguably the better console port.
221b
yeah even to this day i only know of 3 DC games worth playing :P
It certainly isn't my favourite console ever, far from it, but there were some great games on the DC. Soul Caliber, Shenmue, Ready 2 Rumble, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Resident Evil Code Veronica, Jet Set Radio, Metropolis Street Racer, Skies of Arcadia to name some of the top of my head.
Ive been watching these videos for a while now, Really like them.....the ya ya ya part on this video might be my favorite moment ever
Great review! But the best part is at the start of the video because your impression of the game announcer is on point
00:46 those HEAD GAMES adds gave me the creeps
Wow your imitation of the announcer was spot-on! I didn't know there was a PC port, but no regrets as the original sound track was waaaaaaaaay better :)
i love this game! its such a good port minus the music...its not right without the offspring lol
I used to play this in the arcade all the time. Brings back tons of memories seeing it here.
As a kid I played this like crazy on my PSP somehow I still remember all the routes lol
I loved the Offspring before i even knew what the Offspring was
I got the PS2 version when I was 4 years old.
Bad Religion is a great band too but "All I Want"(the YA YA YA YA YAAA song) is from The Offspring.
Cornwell's Turkeyville in Marshall, Michigan has the Crazy Taxi arcade cabinet past their ice cream shop!
Just wanted to say I absolutely love your reviews. Thank you for your content.
Thank you, I'm glad you're enjoying :)
Very much so!
The taxi side-missions in the GTA games are a pretty good PC port, albeit with different maps.
I remember playing it as a kid, I was probably around 10 and I loved it, played the hell out of it.
Love your content.
love your reviews, liked as always. Keep it ip!
No *Praktis Mooud* ?
ahahahahaha *..Practice Mooooode..*

I love Crazy Taxi! Brings so many good memories back.
Has anyone told you that you have a golden voice? Of course you have. Seriously you should be doing voice acting, you have a extremely pleasing voice.
Oh yes !!!! This is my shiet back in the day ! Play this all the time on pc. This game inspired me to become a taxi when I grew up. XD
I´am still playing it on my good old Dreamcast! Recently via VGA on my HDTV and it never looked better!
That beginning intro was spot on!!
I got a Crazy Taxi air freshener sometime in the late 90's with a copy of EGM, and it stayed in my car until I sold it in '09.
Back in the days when I owned a crappy Celeron-based PC, Crazy Taxi was one of a few games that I had. This video brings back so much memories.
I remeber when i was younger and used to play this with my siblings on our game cube, the good old gaming days
The arcade where I lived in Tennessee had Crazy Taxi. It was awesome.
I had this on Dreamcast. I loved that console.
My family has the original arcade seat, thingie and I REALLY wish I could get it fixed. I think the video board is fried and we all loved that game.
Hey LGR,
Great video. Any thoughts on the Crazy Taxi mobile app?
Good times.
My sister and me used to play this game at the arcade in the theatre
My Crazy Taxi copy for the PC, didn’t have the original music, instead it was happy hardcore-ish music, then I found the track list:
Dj Skudero - Fluor
Kim Ono - Big in Japan
Kuantize - Overflow
J&J DJ’s & Jordy Beat & Xavi Avaló - La Festa vol. 2
2 Robots - Sister Golden Hair RMX 2002
Klubbheads - Turn Up The Bass (Speeded up to 175 BPM)
You've probably been asked and answered this before, but what are your thoughts on Planet Coaster and RCTWorld? Do you think you'll do a review or even a comparison of the two since they're coming out at the same time?
I think both show promise in different ways. Will have more thoughts once they have a full release!
Clint, Is there a reason why your name tag on UA-cam looks different, being white letters inside of a blue capsule?
It's part of a new comment section that UA-cam is rolling out.
