In today's video, I show you 4 methods you can use to customize your crochet hooks with ergonomic handles that are inexpensive. In fact, 3 of the 4 methods utilize supplies from the Dollar Tree! The foam clay is the only thing you can't purchase at Dollar Tree (that I am aware of), but I have seen small containers of it available for as low as $2.50 (the tub I bought was 12.99). There's no need to spend a ton of money to buy fancy crochet hooks when you can upgrade your current hooks for CHEAP!

I make my own crochet hook handles as well. My method is as follows, I get a plastic straw and fit it onto the handle, cut off the excess straw, I make a white glue and water mix ( not too thin) then I take strips of scrap material, dip the strips in to the glue and wrap around the straw. I let the glue dry before adding more strips, continue wrapping strips until the desired thickness. The reason I use a plastic straw is so I can remove the handle and slip it onto another hook size. Surprisingly enough the handle is very comfortable.

For putting on the beads I suggest using a folded towel on top of a flat surface to press down on with the hook. It won’t slide around or scratch your surface that way.

Appreciate that you gave some really thoughtful warnings for younger people. Great ideas. Thank you for sharing. I too am an arthritis, connective tissue, fibro, autoimmune gal. Many times I end up covered with ice packed just from crocheting. Great ideas for my metal hooks I can't handle using. While I find good hooks an investment, the idea of spending $38-$120 for an ergonomic hook isn't something affordable for me personally. So these are descent options.💕🧶

Thank you! I love nice hooks, but the cost is just too high to afford a collection of fancy hooks. The best set of ergonomic hooks is the one you can afford 😊 I hope this helps some people avoid hand pain! And I would feel terrible if anyone hurt themselves attempting to save themselves pain

I use those meltable plastic granules to create myself some crochet hook handles.
They aren't soft, but I find them extremely comfortable. They are also capable of being easily re-melted to change them wherever you want. I like that they are clean and durable.

I love using the stretch tape on my crochet hooks! Sports Therapists, Veterinarians, Doctors use it for various things too. I purchased mine from a Dollar Store about a year ago. I like how easy it is to apply and adjust to my hand and various sized hooks. Only disadvantage is that it could cover the size of your hook.☺️🥰🇨🇦

I'm not sure how to customize for me as I am a pencil holder type person. I've been crocheting over 50 years and I just cannot get comfortable crocheting any other way (I've tried). I found some foam type covers for the steel crochet hooks many years ago and they have helped me just by making them a bit thicker. I made the mistake of covering the thumb rest with them as they did flatten out over that area and it was touch going after not using the steel hooks to remember what size the hooks were, when they were fresh on it was easy to move them but not now after a decade or more of them being on there. I did manage to move them back enough to see the sizes and left them there. I am interested on getting some of the skull silicone beads and just putting them on the ends of my hooks or using them on the ends of my knitting needles so my work doesn't fall off when I've put it up for the night. Thank you, I have some of the stretch bandage but I don't like the feel of it on my hooks either, but I do like to hold bandaids on hard to cover areas.

My brain melts when I watch people crochet with a pencil hold. It's like, what?? How?? 😅 Susan Bates makes some cushion grips that look cool. They slip over the lower part of the handle. I wonder if those might help you 🤔 Using the silicone beagsas knitting needle toppers also a great idea! Thanks so much ♥️

@@gracefacecreates my brain melts when I watch diggers crochet, lol I've tried to use the digger hold and sometimes what I'm working on needs it in places but I can't do it all the time, I seem to have more control the way my grandmother taught me. I'm thinking the very small Bates foam grips is what I tried, they were good and still are on the hooks that still have them but needed to be a bit thicker, I want to try the silicone beads and see how those work, I am having more problems with the steel hook than the other hooks. But see the need for help with the 2 mm up to an E hook ones.

Fair warning. I just used the dollar tree silicon beads. ABSOLUTE PAIN. Idk if other beads from Amazon are like that by my wrists and hands absolutly hurt. And one of the hooks just did not want the beads to move. No matter the soapy water or how hot it was, absolutly stuck. 😅 So just be warned, if you arent strong, the Dollar tree beads are prob not ones you want to use. My arms and back are KILLING me 😂😅

I finally tried the beauty Blender handle today after realising I had bought a pack of blenders off TEMU and barely wear makeup they were less than the dollar store price but you have to wait awhile to get them if you want to order from temu . Verdict : putting them on was so easy I like how the handle feels in my hand but after even a short time crocheting my hand is tingling , I know I need surgery so I’m sure it’s not due to the handle as it actually feels nice all in all I like it

Oh, tingling isn't good for sure! I think the ergonomic hook is a good addition to make sure you're protecting your hand health as much as possible. Here's hoping that you and your doctor can get your hands feeling better soon ❤️
