Mcaffe explained it on a radio show. It was supposed to make the pats think they were subbing and get 12 on the field, if it failed the ball wasn't supposed to be snapped. the center wasn't the one they had in practice. take the delay of game and punt it.
That's not the clueless bit too me. The clueless bit is tackling them when they're running the wrong way. Like the Broncos raiders one. Like let them go take a safety??
Here is the explanation behind the Colts play: Plan A: When the Colts punt team started running towards the sideline, the pats would think they are bringing back out the offense, and swap, so the Colts would snap the ball and the pats would get flagged for too many men on the field (it was 4th & 3 which would give them the first down) Plan B: if the pats didn’t switch, they would try to draw them offsides, if that didn’t work, just take the delay of game. Don’t snap the ball. But unfortunately it was a communication error by the center, he didn’t know the game plan. But if it would have worked it would have been one of the best trick plays of all time.
If you get a good look at the "wrong way Regal" play, after Regal had run a few yards in the wrong direction an opponent was about to tackle him. Another player from the opposing team tackled that player (his own teammate) to keep him from tackling Regal.

I remember watching an NFL Europe game in around 2007 where the team receiving the kick off were down by a score with a few seconds left in the game. I think it was Decori Birmingham who fielded the kick in the end zone and took a 5 step drop and threw a forward pass to a teammate that was immediately tackled.
