Small warning for computer science and engineering students, you might *need* to be able to run Windows, or have an x86 processor. In compsci, you'll likely be doing some low level courses that involve using x86, and you may find that virtualizing your own custom x86 bootloaders and drivers is a hassle. For engineering students, you might find a lot of software you need is not available for MacOS, and M1 can't dualboot x86 Windows like you could before with bootcamp. Make sure you get an idea of what software you need and what your school expects before making a long term purchase decision.

I started watching your channel when i was looking for a laptop for college. I'll be graduating this month 🤧 just wanted to say you've been a huge help
Even through all these years watching Dave's videos, I haven't regretted subscribing to him a single time. He's the most truthful out of all other than all others covering it all up with sponsors
Why tho I much like the use of video editing and doing heavy stuff like blender and playing games on the go, the i3 laptop are just bad and slow, the MacBook air and XPS is kinda good. But iPad is a more of a great choice for students.
Well, I already bought a gaming laptop.. for school! Maybe I shouldnt have, considering it already got me into games, instead of work or any means of productivity lol. Anyways, great video Dave!
no worries, you can transform your gaming laptop into a productivity workhorse and your study assistant. i did the same thing, purchased a heavy, power hungry gaming laptop not thinking about the future consequences, even when my other devices were from apple( iphones, watch, ipad) yep, i was that dumb during the purchase. i regretted it, but after just forcing myself to read some study materials, resourceful articles, note makings, even attending lectures with an external webcam(yeah, my laptop doesn’t even have a webcam lol). i made my laptop with high end features n vast possibilities of upgrading, a dedicated study laptop.
Something that has helped me was buying an external hard drive, for two reasons: 1. Obviously the extra storage. Put all the bigger games you know you won't play often on there, leave your faster boot drive for a few smaller or often played games 2. That if you WANT TO FOCUS ON YOUR SCHOOLWORK, YOU CAN PUT AWAY THE GAMES. Whenever it's time to work, literally put away the external drive so you can't game if you wanted to since your library isn't with you on your laptop. Of course, you can plug it back in but it's a nice way to separate work from play actively by putting the games drive away til you're done studying
i did that awhile ago and hated it, had to always keep it plugged in and the charging brick was so big and the fans would turn on even with minimal tasks, so i just sold it and bought a macbook lmao, hope it works for you
Just an advice for engineering students, try not to pick MacBooks for your uni, many professional softwares still mainly favours windows laptops, except for those who intended to use it for coding (eg. computer science) , or else you’ll be frustrated for not able to run the specific software required by your major (running windows on Macs usually dont give ideal performance btw)
About a year later. This video really helped me. Got a used ProBook 650 G7 for just under 400 USD and it is great for everything I need to do as a student and with good battery life.
The one thing I think I love about Dave the most is he hasn't lost his personality like a lot of people. Way too many tech UA-camr's lean into being a personality. Dave is still Dave.
Yes broo a real budget video honest that you don't like sponsors being recommend as "good for students". Earned a sub keep up. Real people will appreciate UA-camrs being real with them
Me. I mean I love the guy but that video was painful to watch. When someone's recommending a $400 headphone for school, you know something's not right.
@@HarshitDube Nope. Linus himself recommended a used Surface, LG Gram, XPS, and Dell Inspiron for students. And later on, Alex & Anthony recommended buying a used Lenovo Thinkpad and DIY upgrading it yourself to save money. NONE of those are unreasonably expensive. In fact all the "Back to School" advice from LTT and their Staff consistently have been in exact alignment with what Dave is saying here. Your comment sounds as if you don't like their channel for no apparent reason, because clearly you have NOT watched their videos on this topic.
I watched like 10 videos before I finally got an honest and HELPFUL video! Durability is something not touched on enough in these kinds of reviews. Thanks so much!!
Good stuff. Great video with great recommendations, I like how you kept budget in mind. I just bought an HP Envy x360 Convertable 15 inch used for $600. Great CPU and decent battery life for an inanely low price compared to the retail which was about $1200. I highly recommend buying used, you may very likely find little jackpots out there
Dave’s hesitancy to compliment Apple is increasingly hilarious, like, he saved a spot for talking about the M1 Mac but spent more time talking about bad things they did in the past hahahaha
It is for good reason. Dave probably have the painful experience with butterfly keyboard macs like many of us have. While other macbooks with normal key mechanism are truly great for people who like and use macOS, coding or writing on butterfly keyboards is an absolutely miserable experience. No travel feels bad for starters, then the keys jam and don't recover. If all that doesn't happen by miracle, then it will still repeat some keys consistently. Doesn't matter how many times Apple replaces the keyboard under your warranty, it's the same shit that will repeat your keystrokes.
@@jeanbutinfrench The fact that it even happened is a big deal. If you're a student and using your laptop, you likely don't have a spare. You have to either buy a separate keyboard and/or turn it in for Apple's repair program. On top of that, this issue is not fixed. The design is still faulty, keyboards will still fail, and eventually, they will stop covering it for warranty repair. You'll be stuck with a very expensive lemon.
Acer laptops are also highly upgradable. I can almost guarantee the Acer on the desk has an empty hhd/ssd bay with connections inside ready for extra storage.
I actually got an acer aspire 5 laptop for my birthday some time back, I think around 2018 because I needed a better laptop for school and I must say it actually works pretty well. If you're an ordinary student then it sure works for you. However, since I'm art student now, I need to upgrade my laptop to a better one because the current one doesn't exactly work for the heavy art stuff (especially for a multitasker like me). As always, GJ for the great work Dave!
@@rarissime5015 I switched to my brother’s MacBook Air (2018) but I’ll be upgrading it to a MacBook Pro 14-inch so I can run heavier stuff easier, and so I can use it alongside my iPad Pro 2020
The M1 has redeemed the MacBook now it's an option to consider. Thanks Dave, would be great if you could feature Optimus in your future videos (set it in a spot that is visible in the frame in the back!)
Thanks! I’m insanely clueless when it comes to tech, so I really needed someone to recommend some students laptops in very simple terms. You did just that :) appreciate it
Thanks for this. I’ve been trying to find a new laptop because my Dell Inspiron 15 is the worst thing I’ve ever purchased and I’m trying to find a new one. It’s nice to see an honest review that’s actually practical.
The most true piece of advice you gave in this video is the fact that you can get way better deals on second hand mid-range hardware compared to new budget stuff. When I was shopping for laptops 2 years ago, I wanted one of those 3 in 1 devices. However, at the 300-400 euro price point there aren't a lot available. After looking for a laptop for a while, I got an ad for a refurbished laptop reseller on my phone. When I compared it to the few choices of new convertible laptops at that pricepoint, it completely blew them out of the water (more storage, more ram, way faster cpu/gpu etc.) Some things however do show that it's a bit older (bigger bezels, some use marks), but that trade off is very much worth it. Something that you need to look out for when buying used laptops however, is the condition of the battery. Luckily my laptop still has a very good battery!
I really like this video. Although I bought myself a Lenovo legion 5 Ryzen 7 4800h GTX 1650, it's not anything crazy and looks sleek (no RGB nonsense). I like to play sometimes with friends and that's all I need. And i can take it to school and still look "normal" plus it's amazing thermals it makes virtually no noise!
Thank you! This is the first review I’ve seen where right at the beginning you recommend buying used! I honestly can’t stress how much I’ve saved over buying used. Thank you!
I love the fact that every recommendation has a price point in mind. It makes it easier to follow and the focus is the durability and what we can get out of it rather how new it is compared with other products. Reselling is also an excellent recommendation.
GOOD LUCK IN YOUR UPCOMING SCHOOL YEAR!!

i got the strix G15. Battery life was actually suprisingly good, 8 hours with normal stuff. 2Hours when gaming.
@@solo.108 they say it's able to last for 10+ hrs but you have to turn the power saving mode on and lower the brightness and disable the GPU blahblah. If you use it normally it would last for like 5-6 hrs which is fine imo
M1 MacBook: Great battery life, non-upgradable, high price tag
Optimus Prime: Transforms, will protect you from the Decepticons, cool as hell
I think the choice is pretty easy
9/10 dentists recommend Optimus prime
I started watching your channel when i was looking for a laptop for college.
I'll be graduating this month
🤧
just wanted to say you've been a huge help
Even through all these years watching Dave's videos, I haven't regretted subscribing to him a single time. He's the most truthful out of all other than all others covering it all up with sponsors
"Back to school gaming laptop"
That sentence alone makes no sense lol.
Makes no theoretical sense, but we all know it makes practical sense
When class gets boring whip out 400fps on doom
Why tho I much like the use of video editing and doing heavy stuff like blender and playing games on the go, the i3 laptop are just bad and slow, the MacBook air and XPS is kinda good. But iPad is a more of a great choice for students.
With ROG flow x13, it now make sense. For a rich student.
if you do 3d animation or video editing in college or school it makes sense
Well, I already bought a gaming laptop.. for school! Maybe I shouldnt have, considering it already got me into games, instead of work or any means of productivity lol. Anyways, great video Dave!
same
no worries, you can transform your gaming laptop into a productivity workhorse and your study assistant. i did the same thing, purchased a heavy, power hungry gaming laptop not thinking about the future consequences, even when my other devices were from apple( iphones, watch, ipad) yep, i was that dumb during the purchase. i regretted it, but after just forcing myself to read some study materials, resourceful articles, note makings, even attending lectures with an external webcam(yeah, my laptop doesn’t even have a webcam lol). i made my laptop with high end features n vast possibilities of upgrading, a dedicated study laptop.
Something that has helped me was buying an external hard drive, for two reasons:
1. Obviously the extra storage. Put all the bigger games you know you won't play often on there, leave your faster boot drive for a few smaller or often played games
2. That if you WANT TO FOCUS ON YOUR SCHOOLWORK, YOU CAN PUT AWAY THE GAMES. Whenever it's time to work, literally put away the external drive so you can't game if you wanted to since your library isn't with you on your laptop.
Of course, you can plug it back in but it's a nice way to separate work from play actively by putting the games drive away til you're done studying
i did that awhile ago and hated it, had to always keep it plugged in and the charging brick was so big and the fans would turn on even with minimal tasks, so i just sold it and bought a macbook lmao, hope it works for you
@@ibrahimoshodi4472 wow that is actually a good idea. Never thought of doing that, would definitely help when it comes to temptation! Lol 😆
The ultimate flex: Show up to school with an Optimus Prime
We don’t deserve Dave, he’s just too good!
Holy shiiit🤣😂
U just going too far dude😂
About a year later. This video really helped me. Got a used ProBook 650 G7 for just under 400 USD and it is great for everything I need to do as a student and with good battery life.
Im here stranded of which laptop i should purchase can you tell me how you got that one
Thank you
The one thing I think I love about Dave the most is he hasn't lost his personality like a lot of people. Way too many tech UA-camr's lean into being a personality. Dave is still Dave.
Like Unbox therapy. Can't stand those videos anymore.
@@jch010 Yup definitely. I think him and Austin Evans are the two most egregious ones.
Yes broo a real budget video honest that you don't like sponsors being recommend as "good for students". Earned a sub keep up. Real people will appreciate UA-camrs being real with them
watching dave’s videos is like having a normal conversation with him haha
I love your intentions behind each video! honest reviews is why you stand out.
Dave really wanna push Optimus in every videos at this point. Looking for more of that in the future 😂
He’s voice is so soothing. I can’t believe I just watched a whole video of someone talking about laptops. 😍
This guy, by far, makes most genuine laptop videos.
Love this guy
It is confirmed, Dave is a "Sweaty Asian dude"
Do a career series. Music production, photo editing, video editing, CAD: product design, architecture & engineering, software development
LOL Dave flexing his Optimus Prime
Thanks for pointing out that there could be back to school "guides" that only promote sponsored stuff
most of them do
Who's here after mkbhd back to school video
Lol me too
Me. I mean I love the guy but that video was painful to watch. When someone's recommending a $400 headphone for school, you know something's not right.
🙋🏻♀️
Dave roasted Linus with the title.
LTT videos ALWAYS recommend students to buy cheap and used top-tier laptops of yesteryear like Lenovo Thinkpads, just like Dave said.
@@mini9503 I said Linus, not Linus Tech Tips. Linus' 'Back To School' Video was expensive stuff.
Hamilton clear.
I still remember MKBHD trying to pull off an advertisement for a laptop as a vague "discussion" on ultrabook. I felt Dave was referring to that
I watched like 10 videos before I finally got an honest and HELPFUL video!
I highly recommend buying used, you may very likely find little jackpots out there
Where did you buy it?
Yeah where did you buy it?
Dave’s hesitancy to compliment Apple is increasingly hilarious, like, he saved a spot for talking about the M1 Mac but spent more time talking about bad things they did in the past hahahaha
I totally understand it though. I could never recommend something where something as basic as a keyboard has flaws.
M1 MacBooks are great. Interesting to see how they improve in it.
What is the complaint for if they already addressed it?
Can I know what’s the new one you got? Im into arts too
@@rarissime5015 I switched to my brother’s MacBook Air (2018) but I’ll be upgrading it to a MacBook Pro 14-inch so I can run heavier stuff easier, and so I can use it alongside my iPad Pro 2020
You did just that :) appreciate it
Dave is THE best and most honest tech reviewer out there right now. I would trust his opinion over anything else on UA-cam
Definitely the best guide so far. Optimus Prime for the win!
When I compared it to the few choices of new convertible laptops at that pricepoint, it completely blew them out of the water (more storage, more ram, way faster cpu/gpu etc.)
Some things however do show that it's a bit older (bigger bezels, some use marks), but that trade off is very much worth it. Something that you need to look out for when buying used laptops however, is the condition of the battery. Luckily my laptop still has a very good battery!
so true! companies should stop forcing expensive stuff to students, could really ponder on these thoughts! great video
A REAL useful video, but I’m gonna wait for M1X MacBook Pro with my old beat up laptop
Same. There also is a supposed re-design for the next MacBooks as well.
I’m still using a refurbished dell laptop from like 3 years ago , never bought refurbished but it’s been one of my biggest surprises
even though I got the helios 300 a few years back I still watch these vids because theyre that good lol
Watching this after MKBHD back to school tech video 2022
there's just something about your aura that made me subscribe like 5 seconds into the video 😅😅 you seem super trustworthy & likeable!
I appreciate you Dave2D, helping me out with what laptop I should pick for college!
I really like this video. Although I bought myself a Lenovo legion 5 Ryzen 7 4800h GTX 1650, it's not anything crazy and looks sleek (no RGB nonsense). I like to play sometimes with friends and that's all I need. And i can take it to school and still look "normal" plus it's amazing thermals it makes virtually no noise!
this video is honestly the best back to school laptop guide out there now
Thank you Dave! I needed this guide so bad
Thank you! This is the first review I’ve seen where right at the beginning you recommend buying used! I honestly can’t stress how much I’ve saved over buying used. Thank you!
I'm not even the type to update gadgets often but when I do, this is the only channel I'm gonna look at.
I love the fact that every recommendation has a price point in mind. It makes it easier to follow and the focus is the durability and what we can get out of it rather how new it is compared with other products. Reselling is also an excellent recommendation.
This Sweaty Asian dude is the best Tech UA-camr ever, and his videos are amazing.
Wtf
you’re so well spoken! thanks for the video
yess it's back, the school laptop review is back! although i did just upgrade my laptop to an SSD hard drive instead of HDD and it's doing *wonders*
