I have a greenstalk full of strawberries, to save money the first year I only planted strawberries in every other tier. When the runners started to set I used a landscape staple to hold them in the nearest empty pocket. The "empty" pockets I planted with annual flowers just to be pretty until the runners started to root in. Also, I'm in Knoxville Tennessee where geenstalk was invented and still produced so we LOVE a greenstalk.
I love this advice! I hope to get my first green stalk soon. I was at the Heirloom Expo this week and got to see one in person and feel it and it definitely feels of high quality.
Great idea. We got our first GreenStalk this month. I bought it for strawberries, which we will plant next year. This week we planted some lettuce plants and radish seeds. The radishes started to come up in a couple days.
I always get excited when I see a comment from someone near me. My husband is a City of Knoxville fireman. We love East Tennessee, and I really need to buy one of these for our strawberries. 🍓
Hearing Laura talk about how the baby plant takes energy away from the mother plant makes me giggle. My 10 month old son takes energy from me every day! :)
Laura, you should try rooting your runners in water! You can take an empty 72 count seed starting tray and put a runner in each one of the pockets to keep them upright. Then fill the bottom watering tray up half way with water and you'll have fully rooted plants in a few weeks that are ready to be potted up in soil. I found this to be much more reliable than establishing them in soil and I've tripled my strawberry crop this year with this technique. Enjoy!
I have 3 tall greenstalks filled with strawberries that NEED to be started over and your idea is great. I know what I'll be doing tomorrow or maybe tonight - it sounds so easy and I can then get on with another chore.
I had great success with the babies when I planted them (still attached to the mother) in a small clear disposable plastic cup of soil. I used “alligator clips” to attach the cups directly to the greenstalk. I water each little cup separately of course and I used straight hairpins to attach to each baby to keep contact with the soil. When I start to see roots in the little clear cups, I remove the baby from the mother and plant the baby with the roots. I clip the weaker babies and try to only have one baby per greenstalk section. That gives me up to 30 new plants. At first I tried to root every baby but it was hard to manage. Pick the strongest baby per mother plant to propagate and clip the rest every time they emerge until the baby in each cup roots. I hope my explanation was not confusing.
I did just that! I added strawberry plants in two flower pots. My grandson who turned one in May enjoyed a strawberry or two almost everyday this summer! He would walk down the sidewalk saying “berries!” 😊 it was the cutest thing! Better bet this grandma will be adding lots more next year!
I smile each time you mention strawberries as I remember when Benjamin first discovered them in your raised beds and how enjoyed them so much ! Now Samantha is doing the same . Thanks for sharing. Your hard work seems effortless but we know it’s such hard work to provide such great content like you both do! What a team you all are! I have enjoyed the change of content so much. Look forward to the pond and all that’s happening there!
I put all cut-off runners into a plastic container, or old pickle jar/mason jar with water in the bottom that covers the entire base of the plant, sometimes it even goes up over the leaves, if it rains the container might be full of water until I empty a part of it. Roots will grow this way effortlessly. Once you see root, then plant it. You might loose a plant once in a blue moon, but majority roots for replanting.
I love that Laura still potted some up...I would have had a hard time tossing that many runners...I am such a wimp when it comes to getting rid of plants, even if they're not needed.
I learned so much today! Our strawberry patch is in 5 large pots along the south side of our house. We started over with fresh plants this year and have had pretty good success. The couple of pots that seemed to not produce I am realizing I added some soil after planting and maybe buried their crowns. Now I know how to fix that! 😅🤣 It’s always so pleasant to watch and learn from you, Laura. Thank you!!
I have always just cut the runners and plunked them in the soil. I have had great luck. They will root anywhere and take over the garden. Anybody else have luck with the cut and plunk method?
You talk about things the kids like to harvest. You could do a "Top picks for harvesting with kids" video and include plants like carrots and strawberries. I'm always looking for ways to get the kids in the garden.
I lost all of my strawberries that were planted in my Greenstalk last winter because I didn't know I needed to protect them in the winter here in my zone 6 garden. Thank you for all the info!
If there’s a community garden near you go visit and if anyone is growing strawberries ask them if it’s ok to get some of the runners off their plants. In most case people are kind enough to share the extras.
My dad would let the runners spread and in fall he would use a shovel to chop between the plants to break the running “thread”. The next year he would pull the mother plant and the babies would fill in as they grew and shot out their own runners. The production level of strawberries was crazy!!
Cousin It gets a hair cut! Laura “ I’ll just plant up a few”. 24 cells later! A few to me is maybe 5ish. My Greenstalk has sat empty close to a year, shamefully. You give me encouragement!
Thank you Laura, great product....I have ordered one for my Grandson's 5th Birthday. He loves to watch your channel, and loves gardening, most of all he loves to eat the fruit and veggies that are home grown.
Seascape is my favorite strawberries. They grow beautifully in my hanging basket strawberry garden. I cut my runners off all my plants except the largest momma plant. Free plants for life! Your vlogs are so much fun to watch every morning with my coffee. Happy gardening😊
I usually fast forward during the music because the music selected is too busy and not easy to listen to, somewhat jarring at times, but TODAY'S selection of music was wonderful!! Nice and relaxing!
My dad had a beautiful strawberry garden it was 8 acres he sold strawberries acres yr.yes your right about the plants. My dad put all money from the sales in the strawberries in savings for me he started doing this when I was 1yrs old and the huge strawberry garden was named after me. In 1977 when I graduated I had a brand new Ford Mustang that the strawberries paid for.
I can see Benjamin and Samantha doing a happy dance !! They will have more strawberries to eat later in the year.😊 Benjamin, I hope you and Samantha gave mom a great big hug for planting you guys some more strawberries to snack on.
I have been on the fence about this growing system since first seeing it here, but you've convinced me now! I'm ordering one and asking my kids for another for Christmas! So excited to put this on my sunny deck, which sits above my small garden. Thanks again Laura. It's been a great 8 months watching you! (Can't wait for our 90 degree weather to cool down so I can wear my new Andrews Seed Co. sweatshirt too! From Atlanta, Love & Blessings!
This is one of my favorite videos you have done!! Question.. to make sure I understand…. The strawberries MUST be taken outside and experience a cold period for them to produce next year?? They can’t be grown year-round in the greenhouse for continuous production??
I have one of the Green Stalk and planted strawberries 🍓 in it but didn’t take enough care of it so my strawberry bushes are still there but didn’t produce so thank you so much Laura for not only inspiring me but also encouraging me to put more effort into them. ❤❤❤
FYI there is a little black cap that comes with the Greenstalk kit. It may be in the bag with the clear tubing. I believe it's for covering the drainage hole in the spinner base. I use it to cover the center hole on each tier when I fill with soil.😉

Hi Laura. Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. What can I do for you. I have been watching you for year's and have so enjoyed watching your family grow. My name is Bobbie Peters.
Great timing on this video! I too have a Greenstalk (thank you Laura!) I put a few strawberry freebies from my bro in law, they have runners and I will be planting up remaining pockets!!! Also in zone 5b I need to get it in the garage for the winter before I connect the tiers, won’t roll up and down the stairs! Thanks again Laura!❤
🍓If you are an avid canner June bearing strawberries are great for you. You want your production at the same time so you are not waiting for enough to process. That’s the type I have. I will be adding everybearing next year as well. I would love to pick thru out the summer season. So Seascape will be my new addition. That way I’ll have both. Some to can and some to eat fresh. They look amazing.
A couple weeks ago I decided my strawberries. I have a fair amount. I planted a new, another, bed of berries. I still had a boat load left. I have away 24 double mother plants with most having babies and then found room for about 16 more! I think I will be switching over my strawberry beds to Dollar tree planters that "look like" minnie Greenstalks. I will see how the 16 plants do in them. So far so good. Currently I use laundry baskets lined on the inside and planted on top and through the holes in the sides. I leave space in the holes to start the babies. Excited for harvesting next year! 💜💚💙💛🐸😎 bed
New concepts today! I did not know about Greenstalks or propagating strawberries. Laura makes her work look so fun and communicates how to do better gardening. I have always loved to garden, but now my interest level is really expanding. 🤗
FYI. Green stalks is a great family business In Tennessee. Made in America. Yay! I have one too and they are great. I think they are having a sale now. Happy gardening!
I've seen just how much compost that you use, that I am surprised that Aaron has not yet invested in your own composting heaps to recycle as much garden waste, as you do with Bethany's pigs. Here, our local council offers bulk purchase of compost, just as you seem to buy for mulch.
I'm so happy this video followed up another one of yours that I was watching! I've been wanting a green stalk for a while and I clicked on your link for green stalk. They are having a sale that ends today, and I was able to get a beautful light green greenstalk for $89 along with your $10 code! Shipping and handling plus taxes made it $111. The time to plant strawberry plants in FL is just starting, I can't wait to plant my berries in my greenstalk!
such perfect timing! working on my vertical garden and replanting my runners is on the docket for this weekend, lol... if you have children or grands (like i do), letting them pick strawberries from the vertical planter is just the best.. they can get to them, turn the planter to look for more, and have such a good time harvesting a snack... i love mine!! thanks for the info!!🥰❤thanks for the video!! 🥰❤
Your strawberry green stalk is doing awesome, mine didn't do so well, I had very few strawberries and they were very small. I might change the soil and give it another go. Blessings 💞🤗💞
Perfect timing for me to see this. I have a raised round bed that I transplanted a store bought hanging plant last year. I ground planted it, did nothing special to it and it handled the CT winter great. Gave me lots of berries this year and now there are tons of babies to the point it is over growing the bed. Now I know I can go in and trim it back some and let selected babies live together with mom. Thanks!!!🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓
Greenstalk does sell a frost cover, and an insect protection cover for the greenstalk. I have used it and it works well. In early Spring when it was still cold there was actually a small bird that was hanging out under the cover. You can tie the ends tighter if needed. The covers are sturdy and great quality that can also be used for any plant, with it being nice and tall.
I got a Late start with my GreenStalk that I was gifted by Garden Answer. And then we got 110 degree weather for weeks…my berries didn’t do much. I’m gonna give it another shot in February, though. This was a great video to teach me even more about my GreenStalk. Now, let’s talk about that squash plant!😮 that’s crazy!
Use bobby pins to hold the tiny strawberry plants in place. I've done it for 60 years with great success. And it's thrifty. Dollar Tree often has hair pins.
In the spring I cut all the runners from my bugleweed and filled trays with the babies and they rooted beautifully. I ended up with about 300 baby bugleweed plants to fill in around a stepping stone path on the side of my house that usually just fills with regular weeds. My hope is that when the bugleweed fills in and creates a blanket it will suppress the weeds. It's only an area towards my gas meter and air conditioning unit and we don't usually frequent back there. But its quite shady so I've added some hosta, heuchera and Japanese painted ferns just for some fun and colour. I used two different bugleweed as well, chocolate chip and burgundy glow. I'm obsessed with burgundy glow because of the pink white and green variegation. I can't wait to see it on a large scale 😊
That sounds amazing! I have a shaded area that has all kinds of grassy weeds between the paving stones that are a pain to pull out. Was almost thinking of round-up but love this idea..thank you! 😊
@@barbaramclean5995 I just dug up a HUGE Doone Valley Thyme and cut it into 5 chunks and also planted around my stepping stones. I also have two large iceplants that I'm not really fond of in my other garden, I am going to dig them up and put there too. My hopes is if I fill this area with as many ground covers as possibly the weeds won't stand a chance lol 😅. This summer before I started planting the weeds were about 4' tall 😬. I dont ever want it to get like that again.
Hi Laura, Happen to see your Avocado tree in the background. Avocado tree does not like too hot. They like protection from the hot afternoon sunlight. Btw love all your videos.
Hi, Laura-I love how you let those stray seeds and plants just bloom away in the greenhouse! I see that crazy melon vibe and is that a pink zinnia under the table? 😂 Too sweet! 😂
Laura, two things, check out Cog Hill Farms today’s Fruit Orchard Tour as it might give you some ideas second thing trees are ready to send to you but want the top to dry out so they don’t pick up any problem. I will let you know when to expect the package. Very strange weather this year rain almost every day, still. There are several varieties of strawberries that survive over winter in the Fairbanks area of Alaska, too. There are some fruit varieties that do grow up here in Alaska which was a surprise and one is a type of bunching grapes new info this Spring, kiwi and strawberries. They also grow apples, cherries up here so this may help those in colder climates.
Laura, I just really love you so much!❤️ You are like a book of knowledge and I have learned so much from you through the years! You are like my plant app. Lol 😂 I have always wanted a Greenstalk Planter. I have tons of strawberries in the ground and a ton of runners that I need to get planted. Very helpful. I just filled mine with 30 strawberry plants, I’m in the south.
So interesting, love strawberries so hope all yours root.
The avocado is doing well. ❤
What great timing, this week I’m moving my strawberries from strawberry jars to raised beds. And thanks for the propagation info.
Yay! This is the video I was waiting for. I just got a 7 tier just for strawberries 🍓 !
Great video! Thank you for sharing info on strawberries!!
Thanks, Laura! Blessings!
Kindred spirits I tell ya. Just did that to my Green Stalk last week. Have a GREAT weekend.
I clipped some small nursery pots to the side of the pockets and popped the runners in there to root. I used a plastic clip.
I got a Late start with my GreenStalk that I was gifted by Garden Answer. And then we got 110 degree weather for weeks…my berries didn’t do much. I’m gonna give it another shot in February, though. This was a great video to teach me even more about my GreenStalk. Now, let’s talk about that squash plant!😮 that’s crazy!
best to just clip the runners and root them in water before planting on soil
I use the shallow pocket greenstalks for my berries.
Another lovely video, Laura. Thank you. Strawberry planting has been on my mind.
Maybe Santa will bring me one for Christmas! 🙏 Have a great day! 🎍
