The boat when lifted out was found to have a lot or corrosion on the Anodes after 1 year which points to an electrical leak which would have irritated the Orcas. I had a electrical fish attractor and when activated had a large pod of Orca attracted to the boat I turned the device off and the Orca went away . Five minutes later we turned on the fish attractor and the Orca immediately returned. Turned it off again and they went away. Electrical leaks have the same effect on Orca and Sharks.

Thanks! Definitely - we learn in each situation something new. That’s also a reason why we love sailing so much! It looks like it will be repaired well but it also takes a lot of time.
It's not clear from the videos, what tactic did you use on the first attack? Best speed away from the location under motor or did you try something else?

What we heard yes - and the recommendations at the moment say, that you should use the engine as fast as you can, especially when they attacked you. But for us it is very difficult to say what is right or wrong. 😞
Hi Pat and Frankie! Maybe I missed it, but no one seems to have asked: •How long did each attack last? •How much time between the first and the second attack? •How did the attacks start? Ramming-or as you said at one point "pushing"(?) on the boat? Chewing on the rudder? Or...? •Could you see them at any point, or hear any of their vocalizations? •What was making the loud sound when you said they are pushing hard on the left side-was it the orca " pushing" on the boat, or...something mechanical? •Do you have a rough idea how many Orca were attacking the boat each time? Sorry for so many questions, but watching this episode again made me curious about the details of the attack. 😁 Thanks! Hope you are both doing well, and that the "mishap" 😱 with your own boat while getting hauled out is in the process of being resolved to your satisfaction! 💕
Hi and thanks for your questions. :) 1) The first one around 10 minutes and the second one about 5 minutes. 2) Around 15 minutes 3) It felt like a combination of ramming and pushing. And the rudder was blocked. 4) Yes, Frankie was able to see them in the dark (unfortunately without recording) and we could also hear the sounds. However, the turbulence in the water was the most audible. 5) We believe it was the pushing of the orca and the breaking of the rudder - we saw parts of it floating in the water afterwards. 6) Unfortunately we have no idea, as it was not possible to make out a number in the dark. However, it felt like there were more in the first attack than in the second. Unfortunately, there is still no progress on our damage. We are still negotiating and discussing the damage. However, we are now trying to find a way to continue with our videos and share them with you. All the best Pat & Frankie
Not sure if advice is still the same, but just over a decade ago the advice we got was to turn off the engine and all electrical equipment. We were just east of Luanco in Biscay. It was just a day fishing trip and 3 orcas decided to play with us. Only one brushed the boat a few times and the others just watched. A couple of hours later they got bored and left. No harm done, but let's just say it was an experience I wouldn't like to repeat.
On this trip we were the crew because we helped a friend who was the skipper. In the most cases we sail alone, so just the two of us and sometimes we sail with friends.
You are absolutely right, they are beautiful creatures! 😉 It’s our friend’s yacht, and it’ currently being g repaired to hopefully be out on the ocean sailing again soon ..
We didn't expect them so early because we were far from the main orca area - so we followed the official new recommendations: - furl the sails - start the engine - go as fast as possible
@@leokaloper4132 maybe that’s what happened, of course the sound is amplified.. but if we’d been under sails the outcome would have maybe been worse. 😉
Something is different because before the computer boats was more quiet and natural. Less threatening. I could never be a sailor. Im terrified of the depths of the ocean that are unknown. There is so much vastness of uncertainty, but boy, what a life.

sailing with new people isn't hard. Knowing that bad behavior gets you thrown over the side, keeps everyone mostly polite at least... Most of the time it's a great way to get to know lots of different people... You two have come such a long way in terms of your confidence, it is nice to see you manage off shore so well now. Being on someone else's boat is less stressful because the responsibility is not yours... The Orca encounters is frightening and damage was done however, all the video footage I see on line, those Orca are not angry... I have been 50 meters away from Orca teaching there young how to rip a stingray apart. Such violence I had never seen before. While a few boats have sunk because of the interactions, that was more because of a structural failure of rudder tube rather than a violent attack. They are playing with boats, it seems that is fun to them, and scary to us. They are so powerful, if they wanted to, they could demolish a 50 foot fiberglass yacht no problem at all... Good to see you both so happy...

Has anyone considered that the orcas are reacting to the electronics of the boat?. Such as the fathometer, which sends out signals.
