As a lifelong Cardinals fan this game had me on Cloud Nine.
However, that happiness was tempered with sadness for Ryan Howard - a St. Louis native who was a Cardinals fan growing up, and by all accounts a good guy.
When I heard that his injury was a torn Achilles tendon I knew his career was in jeopardy.

Yep. And games can be won 1-0. People were saying the Rays wouldn't have won Game 6 of the WS last year with just 1 run. And games like this one prove that it can actually happen. If a pitcher is in a zone, and the manager uses the eye test and trusts his pitcher, instead of relying on what was done all season, that pitcher can make a lone run stand up.

David Freese broke the Rangers

If it wasn't the Braves blowing up the Wild Card lead and one game comes to mind. The game at Dolphin Stadium where the Braves had the game won and a couple of errors and the Braves blew it against the Marlins. In my opinion that game have made the difference between a Braves-Phillies NLDS matchup (the eventual postseason match-up since the 2009 season).
I'm not mad because the Cards won it all but what it could have been for the Braves that was better than the 2010 team. At least the Braves won the Wild Card the next season to be in a NL Wild Card Playoff.

RIP Halladay. I'm glad this marked the end of the Phillies NL East dominence. From 2007-2011 they were a really clutch team in late event situations like late innings and late in the season, and is frustrating as a Mets fan to see them make it consecutive years. I thought their 4 aces year of Halladay, Hamels, Oswalt, and Lee was the beginning of a dangeorus dynasty, but the Phillies offense let them down and havent looked the same since

This is not a classic. This is sadness encapsulated in a 10 minute video. 2011 was supposed to be our year. 102 wins playing against a team we essentially let in on game 162. Halladay has some first inning struggles but that's it. Dominant performance by both pitchers, unfortunately with philly not coming out victorious. Utley just a little further and it's a tie game. Ryan Howard's career and prime cut short because of this final groundout. This was the beginning of the end, as that core and team slowly dissolved, not being able to make it back to the postseason since. A big what if in our franchise's history. Halladay could've got his ring this year man. RIP. I pray for the days where we will see October baseball like this again in Philadelphia.

This not only ended Philadelphia’s playoff run (07-11/One Title/Two Pennants) but kicked off one for St. Louis (11-15/One Title/Two Pennants) after the rare dry spell (07-10/one division title and swept by LA in 09 NLDS)

Didn't exactly kick off one considering they won the pennant in 2004 and again in 2006 with another division title in 2005. LaRussa, it was namely Tony LaRussa. Love him or hate him, can't deny his winning ways, he took over in 1996 and got them their first division in nearly 10 years, then 3-peated (depending how you count 2001 since it was a tie) division titles twice.

Looking back at this night, it went about as bad as it could possibly go for the Phillies. First off, as a World Series favorite with 102 wins, they get shut out 1-0 and eliminated in the opening round by a team that barely clinched a Wildcard spot. Secondly, Roy Halladay suffers a back injury that caused him to develop a serious painkiller addiction that more or less led to the end of his career and caused him a lot of problems after he retired. And thirdly, Ryan Howard tears his Achilles tendon right as his massive extension is about to kick in and he becomes a massive albatross on the team's payroll with his lackluster performance while his extension is in effect. And for the cherry on top of the shit sundae, the Phillies have not played in the postseason since this game.

Hollidays base loaded flyout is normally a grand slam too.. it was cold they knew this would be low scoring.

especially since FOX kept commenting how the 2011 team lost their "ace" named Wainwright- as if Carpenter wasn't clutch (they clearly forgot how dominant he was in the 2006 World Series- his lone game was extreme dominance of a high power offense).

And the last game that the Phillies were considered legit contenders. Still haven't been back to the playoffs a decade later. That 2011 team was supposed to be historic with their pitching staff, but unfortunately it just fizzled along with Howard's prime after the injury.

Forgotten Classics? Yeah, as a Cardinals fan. As a Phillies fan, more like Forgotten Horrors.
We let them into the post season and then they turned around and beat us. Unreal.

As much as I dislike the Phillies for the way their fans treated me as a Yankees fan, I do feel bad for Ryan Howard as I rewatch this clip. I actually did like him as a player back in the day too.

I wonder how many of the people who feel that games like this are boring are also people who feel that games are too long. (This just in: More offense = longer games.)
