oil filter fail buyer beware K&N
Never had that issue with a K&N oil filter. Use them on all of our cars and used it on my Honda VFR750 when I had it.
Had the same thing happen to me with the K&N filters. Searching the forums and it was clear that this is a widespread issue. I stick with OEM for my CBR650F now.
yeah, I am done with K&N
I had the same problem. It covered my tire in oil and almost made me wreck. Also got the CBR650F. Good bike.
yes, it is very dangerous if the filter is pouring, it may be a defect problem
Definitely, it ended up having a recall on certain batch numbers
It’s weird that what I was thinking I never had that problem or really any problems with k abd n filters
Damn, that sucks... It's good that you noticed, otherwise something could have happened really bad. O.O;
yea I was super lucky!
I'm almost positive this issue has been fixed
For now, i wont ever risk it again personally though
Just had one do the same thing on me. Got it from Revzilla
LOOOL. They say K&N air and oil filters are good. Fuck that I'll buy OEM Honda parts all day long.
OEM ftw 👌
That would be my reaction
WTF
I personally have always stuck with oem or mobile one filters. My fords get motor craft and my Honda gets oem too. K&N had some issues with not filtering as well as others from what I've heard too
OEM ftw
That’s so weird because k@n has literally the best reputation for oil filters
I've been using them for the last decade on 3 vehicles and my bike and never had an issue.
That shits fucked up!! Wow that's a serious design issue they need to fix asap
Yea, the definitely do!
It's because you bought a them all during an instance where there was a faulty batch released while they were attempting a new welding process on the top of the filter. Literally if you call them and contacted the Q/A department they would of sent you all brand new filters for free and refunded the price of each oil change like they did for me the two faulty filters I got. Life happens, shit goes wrong, there is so much that can end up faulty from even the slightest manufacturing error. Bottom line is K&N is making it right and then there are videos like this shit talking the company, I know its an old video but still, the information is not relevant anymore and the video should be removed, or an annotation setup at the beginning stating that K&N has since fixed the issue..
Also just to add, I use Motul V300 oil that is about 63 dollars for four quarts, so they completely refunded me the price of 126 dollars worth of oil, for the fault of about 30 dollars worth of filters, just TRY to tell me K&N did not try to make up for it.
Ive been through a dozen k&n filters all on the same bike, never had a problem.
I own a ‘05 Triumph Speed Triple 1050 since new. I’ve been using K&N oil filters for 10yrs, never had a problem/issue. Using Motul 5100T4 oil, with 80K miles on it, it doesn’t burn a drop, great compression & power. Still racking up more trouble free miles.
That sucks man! I just saw today k&n put out a recall on Honda oil filters with a certain cereal numbers. Scary shit bro!
Quality control problem were these filters of the same or similar lot numbers # ? If not obvious design problem . I'd wait s year then try them one more time..to see if problem has been rectified. I swear by K&N and have used them for many years on both my car and bike. So sorry to hear you had multiple problems.
Found later there was a recall on a specific lot. It happened enough toe personally to avoid them since, oil+rear tire could equal big problems! Thanks for watching.
Always check where the product was made cause some are made in the U.S but others are from Mexico and china. So i guess the quality varies between countries.
This was a recall issue, but I'm sure there are knock offs out there
Oh man, It is too dangerous!!! Be safe, my friend!
Its the ONLY oil filter I ever use on my Valkyrie.... I've had ZERO issues!
WHAT!? 4:01 looks like a MF crime scene....
shes bleeding out!!
actually had an oil changed, after i bought a car 1 month ago and i got told that i had a “cheap” oil filter that was k&n.. but it was 17$ at advanced auto parts 😐 and my engine blew all because of this filter.. the oil was high quality just the filter gave out and poor oil everywhere and had to get a new engine 😐
First, the nut on the end is only for taking the filter off.
Correct, still failed
Was the filter bought online or at a local parts store?
Some k$n oil fitler are different for bikes an etc they have different springs an design for your bikes.for my bike with the k$n oil filter has the coil spring which if its cloggs the spring coil open up it an the oil flow threw which want cause you to have oil drippin from the oil filter.for your bike you gone have to get the same filter your bike is in order for you to get the coil spring in it.
Those scuffs are from removing?!?! Damn...what you use a impact to loosen it?
Used these for a few years now on my GSXR1000 with no issue. I will make sure to inspect more often.
The ones on cars have a different design with the bolt. I can’t imagine it leaking without banging it up.
I use them for my 09 fz6r. This is the 3rd one no issues. Hope this never happens to anyone else.
i haven't had problems with mine and this is my 7th one i think. might be 8.
guess I got a bad batch, either way, I'm done with them
K&N are the best. Idk what's going on with you brother .
Never had problems with K&N filters but ill keep this in mind
bad batch, apparently a bunch on recall as well now.
well that's kinda Shit!
definitely, last thing you expect on a lean, oily tires!
They did that on purpose by manipulating the drum size.
Bloody hell thats dangerous Af. I use a hiflo filtro which has loads of small straight edges on it onto which you can put a cap style removal tool.
I have switched to HiFlo as well! ftw
Been using k&n forever. Not 1 problem.
I guess this brand of oil filter won't be in your shopping list. Scary encounter indeed that the oil coated the tires
yup, I am done with them.
Wow, that's awful. My husband does our oil changes and he uses K&N filters. I'll let him know about your experiences.
could be a really bad day for anyone facing similar issues!
Hi Ironical Rebounded you're video is cool you so cool and you friend 😎😎😎😎☯️☯️☯️💨🏍💨🏍💨🏍 and bike life forever.
Thanks for watching!
Im calling BS! So you are actually talking about the leaking filter while making a video and the filter just happens to start leaking?
Lol no, it was edited in to the vlog... Happened previous to the video, cut the scenes in.
My father's 2012 camaro ss kn oil filter leaked bad. Shame cause I highly recommend it then it started causing a leak time to change
I avoid them at all costs, even if this may have been a bad run of filters, no worth the risk for mediocre at best oil filtration
Just get a factory filter and you'll be good to go. Sorry this happened to you, I'm glad you didn't get hurt. Love the white lettered tires on your ride. Looks great!
OEM ftw
I bought a HF138RC and it is stuck after 5mm at the end of its tread. And it is stuck doesn't even budge. Probably the oil filter tread is bad. Did not have a issue with KN.
Damn 🤔
Its that a cbr650 f? Because i have one two. What exhaust is that?
+Omar Cuenca yes it is! Akrapovic ftw, check out my before and after vid, it's an epic exhaust 👌🏻✌️💯
Same happen to me two weeks ago i was lucky enough to notice it before riding my bike ib the morning. I took it back and got my money. From now on i only using oem honda oil filter
+Omar Cuenca OEM ftw👌🏻
Most of the issues I’m seeing based on the comments is on motorcycles not trucks and cars. I guess the filters suck for bikes.
I’m about to drop $250 into the ss-1007 billet filter for my truck so hopefully this explains some stuff to consider. I have a 2004 GMC Sierra 5.3 V8 with 318,962 miles on it and I’m trying to make it run smoother than it already run so I’m replacing the filters with performance filters to increase the flow and quality to make it last as long as possible.
K&N Oil Filters and K&N Air Filters (in my opinion) are the best filters on the market. I recommend you check to make sure you are using the right filter because if you are not, it will definitely leak. Also it is also a possibility you might have a batch of defective oil filters. I recommend you contact your retailer and/or K&N and I'm 100% sure you will get all of your money back. But don't give up on K&N..it is truly a great filter.
Getting my money back is one thing but the potential for this kind of failure leading to a crash, fatality or engine failure is much more of a concern here!
Thanks for that info IR. BTW weather in T.O. is supposed to be really nice this weekend so we need more videos!😉🏍
Oh I have a ton of footage, just haven't had time to edit #worklife #thestruggleisreal
IronicRebound no doubt that working full time and editing etc can take up a lot of time and I totally understand that. Looking forward to watching the new videos when u have time to upload them!!!
All well and good, till the bolt head rounds off and some clown at the garage has put it on with a 10000 nm of torque, as I found out tonight. Pshhhh unreal 😒
Is there a reason you ran practically every stop sign you came to? Is there some special social status you've obtained that makes even the most rudimentary of traffic laws that apply to everyone else somehow not apply to you?
NO USE TRASHING ALL the K+N OIL FILTERS BECAUSE of YOUR BAD EXPERIENCE ! BEEN USING THEM for YEARS , NO ISSUES
It's a warning to those who don't want to either destroy there motor or worst case slide crash and burn.... It was apparently a bad batch that's since been recalled, I won't buy K&N ever again
@@IronicRebound OK THANKS ! PEOPLE are GONNA HAVE POSITIVES and NEGATIVES WITH ANYTHING and EVERYTHING in LIFE !
True, mine was negative
Damm i never thought that would happen
me neither, thats some lack of quality control if you asked me, down right hazardous!
IronicRebound i swear it's becoming more and more dangerous to ride out here
Oil filter should be turned tightened about 3/4 of a turn after gasket contact . Making a mark on the filter with a sharpie can be helpful . If a wrench is needed so be it . Hand tightening not reliable
Issues with hand tightening wouldn't result in the leak from nut kn these filters. It was ultimately a recall issue, not the kind of quality control I would expect for a "premium" filter. I won't trust K&N garbage again
I stand corrected if it leaked from the nut you would assume it’s a manufacturing problem in welding . I’ve only used these filters on my hemi to make removal a bit easier , but not necessary. Thanks for the info
at least it's not another crash video. Ride safe 👍👊✊💨
loll no, not this time. been a good year for crashes thankfully
Wow, that bites! I've been using the K&N filters for years and no issues. I don't touch the nut until it's time to remove the filter. Why would yours have been scuffed from when you removed it? I mean if you removed it, why did you put it back on?
I removed it after it leaked, using the nut. KN had a recall on some of these shortly after the vid
OMG thanks for the info, just installed a K&N 204 on my 650f :S
www.knfilters.com/recallkn204
I used these for 1.5 years and just today while on a major road, had a failure draining nearly all my oil really quick. Had to do a roadside oil change and filter swap. I'll be staying away from K&N without a doubt
Yeah, OEM ftw👌
I have a KN303 on my bike as we speak . IMA DAHHHHH !!!
Which kind of K&N u use?
I am using OEM filter instead of the blown K&N filters.
Wonder if car oil filters would do the same. I mean they too have the easy remove bolt
Same thing happened on my subaru with a similar style k&n filter
never had this happen with a K&N ever. I love there filters.
Fool me once, shame on you! Fool me twice, shame on me! Fool me three time...??
BTW, were these blown ones included in the recent K&N filter recall? I'm firmly of the belief the problem is much bigger than they are admitting...reports go back to 2012 or more....
We had a report on a Triumph forum a few months ago...Bonneville spewed it's oil from the same filter...rider shut down as soon as he saw the warning light, but the engine bearings were trashed. after review, K&N split for a new engine for the guy...they do have a pretty good warranty/guarantee on their products....but sooner or later someone will be suing them for serious injury/death.
two of the three match the serial run they listed, the third does not. its a dangerous gamble to take
Those are knock off filters. Common issue. Probably paid 3/4 what they cost at K&N reputable reseller.
Christopher Lee nope, these were the real deal, K&N has a recall out now
thats my area!!
i get around ;-)
thanks for the warning !
Another guy I follow had a K&N filter on his track bike and almost crashed due to the same thing happening. I only buy Factory Honda on my bike
DeathsStalkerRVT referring to throttle lock?
Keith Wong he crashed. This was another guy in the UK I can't remember who. I follow around 30+ people
DeathsStalkerRVT i see
ride safe
One question. Do you tighten the oilfilter from the nut or do you tighten it by hand?
Always by hand, every time, all the time👌
🏍💨
Never tighten the K&N filter with wrench on the nut of filter, that’s only for removal.
Hand tighten only. If you tighten with a wrench, it can crack the spot weld and develop a leak.
#fact, thats why i mentioned it in the vid as well, hand tighten only
Looks like it was put on using the welded end nut, the one designed for REMOVAL OF THE FILTER. NOT for install. Although he does mention he "only removed" it with the nut, it looks like it was scarred in both clockwise and counter clockwise directions. I've used K&N products for over 20 years, never had an issue. Could be bad luck, could be bad install. I'm still going to use them.
Its because people use the nut to wrench it on. its meant to be used for removal only.
Not me, hand tightened every time and it leaked. Was admitted by K&N as a bad batch, buyer BEWARE!
Hey if you look at the cup half full, at least you know you have good oil pressure😁 good enough to blow the filter
Duff batch of filters unfortunately. K&N have sorted it now.
Never should have made it past their production line, I won't ever buy K&N again, not worth the risk
You have clearly over tightened the filter.
By hand?!?! Damn! Guess K&N recalled these filters officially as a result as well?😉😁
What a mouth on this guy. Droppin the f bombs....
inspector javert on the initial clip where I had oil spewing out of the bike and oil was all over my rear tire and could have killed me, you are damn right I was cursing... Not so much in the actual video discussing the problem though🤔 don't worry, UA-cam demonitized the video #youtubepolice
Actually based on this video I have decided NOT to buy a k&n so I appreciate the video. Just thought it was funny
Glad to be of service, ride safe!
First Lol
you win!
Thanks man. It just made me stick with the oem filter for my bike. Just think I almost bought one today on the way home from work.
Yup whole filter just poured oil out when I started my car... did everything as usual when doing my oil change, just disappointed, don't know if I'll buy again
Did you make sure it was tight?
Lesson to be learned... dont hand tighten an oil filter. At least be fair enough to state in your title that it is your own darn mistake.
iam scotticus you're confused, hand tightening is the ONLY way to tighten them, using a wrench can lead to overtightening, gasket failure and difficulty removing. These leaked at the nut on the end, K&N now has a recall on several of them
I use nothing but K&N filters, never had an issue. Maybe you got ahold of some knock off.
Most likely you could've hit a rock or small pebble caught it just right and Cracked the can... considering how low it sits to the ground
There was a recall on these shortly after, defective and poor quality control.
Rut Roh
The new OEM filters for Honda are junk.
