I am hobbyist photographer and Nikon user. For several years I was using the D7000 and decide to upgrade to the D7200 (really love using this camera). But as I got older and started to travel a lot more the D7200 was getting to pretty heavy for travel. So I decide to purchase the Z50 with the kit lenses and the FTZ adapter (great travel camera) and eventually sold my D7200 and the all the F lenses that I owned. I do regret selling my Tamron F mount 90 mm AF macro lens. The Z50 is a great camera for most of my photography, but there are two things, that frustrate me the battery life (I own three batteries) and the AF. I waiting for Nikon to introduce (not holding my breath) a D500 mirrorless replacement with the Expeed 7 processor, IBIS, bigger battery (the same in the Z9) and 2 card slots.

I'm not moving on from my DSLR's, Sony a 200 Nikon D 3200 and the D 7200. If what I don't own is required, I just rent it. I am not a go fund me for all these mirror less continues evolution until some stable benchmark is reached. I won't pass up a mint D810 and a mint D750, but product support for the older gear has disappeared.. We have absolutely no say in what is manufactured for us. The same goes for electronic reliability of gear.

Those lenses are a better investment than selling your gear to KEH and investing the money in something else, for sure.
I personally made the experience that if you dont stress yourself with purchasing lenses (and selling them!).... you can NOT (!!) lose any money. I have a little list of lenses i wish i would have, but some lenses on this list took me YEARS (!!) to aquire.
Not because of lack of deals on the 2nd hand market, not because i had absolutely no stress, but because i waited for unbeatable deals which are typically reserved and sold within hours.
Since i made manily "too good to be true" deals on a long lasting, still used mount (EF, full frame only, if possible L glass) i can either sell this stuff without profit or less, or i can up the price and wait for someone who wants it ad-hoc.
But it could be also misleading a bit, i also love to purchase partially or completely broken or dirty lenses and repair/clean them and either sell them or use them for myself.

@@georgedavall9449 I dont get how this isnt obvious, lenses, especially older ones without electronics or nowadays we can also say a electronic/mechanical lens where you physically turn the autofocus mechanics at least, not the "focus by wire" as in modern lenses, they last forever or are at least even adaptable and usable without electronics.
Also, i dont get how people still use something like KEH, B&H etc, they scam you if you sell them anything and they upsell the lenses heavily when selling.
I have read longer ago an article where someone bought an excellent condition lens and replaced the front plate and mount with the serial number with another lens, same condition if not even better. This exact lens was sent to KEH and he claimed excellent condition. A single, super small scratch, as it was already there as the lens was purchased from them, was now a reason to say its just a "very good" condition and he would get like 80$ less, additionally to the loss by default in the best case condition which was high from the beginning.
The thing is.... never allow a capitalist to make profit with you, and KEH, B&H etc are capitalists marionettes since their main goal is to create "profit" (aka loss of anybody not involved in the business practices)

3 lenses is... usable, especially considering you can take all 3 with you.
When im into wildlife, i pick the heavy 150-600C Sigma or the lighter, but still big RF 800 F11 Canon lens. But then i still have no clue which would fit better additionally for other stuff: 50mm 2.8 macro for... macro+ general use, the 50mm 1.4 vintage for nice creative stuff (but bad macro) or the "jack of all trades", my 17-55 2.8, which is already on the heavier and bigger side and is inferior to the 1.4 and 2.8 primes in their specific usecases, but 17-55 give me at least some universal usability with the constant 2.8 aperture.
I have to think very much about this thing still, but thats a problem on my side since i prefer affordable good glass and just multiple lenses for each specific usecase over for example a expensive lens which combines multiple lenses capabilities for a very high price tag ( Canon RF 100-500L, RF 24-70 F2, 85mm F2 macro, the rumored soon coming RF 200-800,...)
And those are not the only lenses i use often... the less glass you have, the better, trust me. As soon you have to think too much about which lens to pick, especially when its about multiple 50mms or similar zooms in range, you better "downgrade" to one lens which fits your usecases the best.

I would love to buy that camera again, but my husband, well, he just wouldn’t understand (He’s not into photography at all) The raw photos out of that camera were always perfect, I hardly had to touch them in the computer. I had an old 60mm D-series macro lens that I loved. I decided that I didn't really need that lens since it had the 105mm macro. I regretted letting it go. It was good for much more than macro. I have a Z8 and I brought the 50mm macro z-lens. I came upon a 60mm macro G-series lens and compared it to the 50mm macro. I traded the 50mm for the 60mm and have not regretted it. I love the way it renders photos and it is incredibly sharp, nearly comparable to the z-lenses and it has a "look" that I love.

Raymond's review of the Z50 some time ago was excellent. I would only add that it seems to have less noise than the D500. Many people have said the Z50 isn't a mirrorless equivalent of the D500 but I think it's close enough. As a nature photographer, I use both equally. Nikon does need to introduce a DX camera with the AF focusing of the Z8 and other so-called pro features. It could be called the Z80.

Noise - basically (IMO) most noise we see in digital images in recent years follows from failed raw processing of raw images from camera that no longer have an OLPF [1]. Nikon Eliminated the OLPF from the D800 in its D800E version over 10 years ago. Nikon eliminated it because of the downside of the OLPF [2]. Only recently, Adobe have improved their raw processing algorithms for better processing of images from cameras without OLPF. Raw processing is done by Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) that is run as a plug-in by both Photoshop and Lightroom Classic. ACR has been amended by two optional functions: "Enhance" (AKA Raw Details) and "AI Denoise".
Neither D500 nor Z 50 will have an OLPF and none of Z 7(ii), Z 8, Z 9 have one. Z 6(ii) has an OLPF. It seems that relative to full frame, cameras above 30MP have the OLPF removed and below still have one. Photosite density in a D500 compares to the 45MP of a D850 or Z 7(ii)/8/9 in DX mode.
The moral of the story is if you have older D500 raw shots, process them again with today's options for noise handling.
Note that what we call "noise" and attribute to the camera or sensor boils down to the raw processing AI not making appropriate required guesses. You'll see this noise a lot in blurry zones and in darker zones of our 45MP images, where old-school algorithms for deBayerisation and demosaicking have too little support to work properly. Old school deBayerisation actually creates digital artefacts and the ones we easily recognise are called Moiré. Now plain simple demosaicking can remove Moiré but not the less obvious artefacts. In recent years, Adobe was far behind in this respect compared to Topaz and DxO. DxO PhotoLab and DxO PureRAW are great at taking this noise out. Topaz is in transition from their older product suite (DeNoise AI, Sharpen AI, Gigapixel AI) to a bundled product Photo AI and that made changes to the AI of predecessors. So now Adobe has bettered their life. Enough? It really depends on what you subject you shot and how deep you pixel-peeped - looked at the result. The subject type is relevant to learning AI that in the learning phase may build databases of reference shapes or a mathematical description thereof, etc. So if your type of subject was not sufficiently present in the learning stage, then you will notice that. This applies both to raw processing and to recognition AI.
[1] The Optical Low-Pass Filter was added into the Bayer digital colour camera to make the guessing of missing colours easier in times when compute power needed to do that wild-assed guessing without hardware help at shooting time, would have been too expensive, too heavy, too big, and would have required too much power. The concept already was applied in the development of the Scanning Tunneling Electron Microscope in the 1970s, so it was well known among programmers of digital imaging software.
[2] The OLPF disperses light travelling to photosite [x,y] in the sensor so a bit of it also hits its immediate neighbours. This makes guessing missing colours easier indeed, helps to deal with jagged edges and can help a bit with banding. The downside is that it takes light away and the dispersion causes less sharpness: the OLPF reduces low light sensitivity, reduces contrast envelope and dynamic range, reduces colour space, reduces contour sharpness, and increases vignetting (a lot).

      @jpdj2715 8 місяців тому +1

Size - note that a Z 7(ii) is a few mm smaller than a D500 and i DX mode has similar resolution. What Nikon failed to sufficiently do was scale their algorithms in the Z 7(ii) to DX mode. While resolution works linearly, so to get two times the resolution - for human perception - of X*Y=MP, you need 2X*2Y=4MP resolution. That's why the 45MP 7/8/9 are only 40% better than the 6 or f - if we ignore the OLPF being present, or absent that makes the 45 much better than 40% better and ignore the added noise we get in 7/8/9 images from the absence of the OLPF because our raw processing software is not good enough. Yet.
So, resolution is a linear thing, but data processing directly, linearly, relates to MP and bit depth. So a 7/8/9 in DX mode should be able to process twice as much per time in DX mode than in FX mode and that's not what we see.
So in many case, a DX photographer could actually use an FX camera and DX lenses force FX cameras to that mode.
Looking at what Nikon accomplished with the Z f that has an EXPEED 7 processor (10 times the power of 1 or 2 EXPEED 6 processors, Nikon say), I would argue it should not be too difficult to develop a Z 500. Maybe with a sensor of Z 8/9 character too. These have many more additional rows and columns of photosites outside the net image area [1]. My guess about these extra rows and columns is that Nikon uses them for IBIS in the sensor plane, in software rather than shifting the sensor mechanically like mad. The 7/8/9 sensor IBIS actuators, apparently, have never been able to shift only one photosite in order to shoot sensor shift images that can be stacked into RGB and remove a lot of uncertainty present in raw processing. But the Z f now adds that option. In a small package. I can only advise the DX shooters to unite and tell Nikon what they need and expect.
[1] the origin of the added rows and columns outside the "effective" image area is in providing hardware help to raw processing. In absence of these added photosite, raw processing would need two algorithms in its mathematically precise and repeatable, yet wild-assed, colour guessing: one for the center of the raw image and one for the edges. The added rows and columns remove that requirement, but are only used to guess missing colours and not in the image rendered to us mortals.

I recently got an old Konica Minolta 7D, also with a 6mp CCD. The dynamic range ain’t great, but the colors! The reds and oranges are wonderful right out of the camera. I get why Raymond would love that old Nikon and want it back. In terms of gear I miss, I gave away an old Pentax 35mm f2 that I got for a song (the radiation had caused the glass to go brown, which I fixed with UV). Been there, done that! I sold all my Olympus em-1 gear to go to Nikon Z system. I recently looked at images done with the Olympus and think "why did I do that?". Another year or two down the road I had a selection F mount gear, bodies and lenses. I decided to go all in for the Z system. And recently I traded my Viltrox gear for the Z for Nikon Lenses. Yes there are many times I have thought why did I do something. But today I totally enjoy the system I have built and am finally in a financial position to keep what I have! I bought my z50 some years ago with kit lenses and adapted my Voigtlanders 40mm and 58mm. I later bought the Z24-70|2.8S and used on the z50 as a (36~112mm) full frame equivalent. My plan was to continue building the Trinity before getting a full frame camera. 3 years later I have not purchased additional equipment. Why, because the z50 image quality is surprisingly good when you feed it superior glass. People cannot tell it is NOT full frame. I have pre ordered the 180~600mm with intentions of mounting it on the z50 to photograph wildlife. The z 50 although not stabilized also shoots 4k! More than capable. So I would like for the D500 replacement. I may eventually get a full frame camera but the lil’ z50 is still so more than enough capable. 🎉

Interesting, I was about to sell my Z50 in the favour of a Zfc, but feared that I regret it, as the only two things I would get it, is a USB-C connector and the similar usage between the Zf and the Zfc so I don't need to rethink. The loss would be the compactness of the Z50. with the 16-50 it really fits into some of my pockets and is great for hiking.
As I sold my Z6 for the Zf (for the better AF, dual slot etc.) I had to sell my 24-70/F4 also (was a kit). It took great pictures on a recent wedding and it got immediately replaced with a 24-120/F4. I didn't care too much about the compactness (cannot beat the Z50), but the constant F4 allows you to be save with your settings indoor and outdoor. The longer reach of the 120 makes it the better fit for vacation, and for even more reach I have 150-600 in case being required. Or take the 50-250 on the Z50 for outdoor ;-) Some more reasons wanted to really regret the Z50 sell ?

I certainly have sold a lot of gear over the years as I moved from Nikon APS-C to Nikon DSLR's (D750's and D850), then sold them and a lot of lenses (at least 11 I believe) as I moved to the Nikon Z mirrorless system (currently a Z8 an Z9). I did own some wonderful F-mount lenses: the ones that come to mind are a beautiful APS-C lens from Sigma - the 50-100mm f1.8 Art lens; the Sigma 85mm f1.4 Art lens; the Sigma 40mm f1.4 Art, and the Zeiss Milvus 100mm f2 Macro lens. I did really like an old Nikon APS-C lens (the Nikkor 18-300mm f3.5--6.3G ED VR lens) But I have a personal rule that if something is sitting on the shelf and not being used, then it is a candidate for a sale. I love my growing arsenal of Z lenses (5 with one on order), so no regrets, and hopefully my "old" lenses are getting another chance to make beautiful images.

  • @kaminobatto

Yep, definitely sold and regretted a lot of these decisions because of nothing but emotional attachment. The dark side to all those regrets is the terrible reaction of hording gear now. In any case, perhaps my most regretted item sold was the Sony SLT-A99V. I loved that body so much, and to me it was my first mirrorless-like experience (well, not really mirrorless, but EVF and all). I sold mine with 10 clicks or less on the shutter, and I sold it for 25% of its value just because I wasn't giving it much use and decent Sony glass was too expensive to invest in at the time. I repurchased another one years later is a similar condition, for a similar price to the one I sold, so it was as if I never sold it, kinda. My second biggest regret, and this one is from a value perspective strictly, is when I sold all my Canon glass when I switched to Nikon, even though I knew I was getting a 5DSR at a later point. 80% of my glass was EF L with one non-L Canon lens, a Zeiss, and a Sigma. I ended up buying the F-mount versions of the Sigma and Zeiss glass, but nothing compensated for the extraordinary loss I felt for my trusty L glass. Buying all that glass again amplified my feeling of loss, bbut at least I have it back now and I use it on my Canon mirrorless cameras.

This is kind of a reason I tend to go for middle-of-the-road lenses. I got the 24-120/4 for example. It's not the über 24-70/2.8, but it's also not the consumer 28-300 variable-aperture. It's a do-it-all in every sense of the word. It keeps me from getting another lens in the same range. I have the 18-35 and 70-300 to complement it. Those are not marketed as gold-ring lenses but they're still quite good, even if the bokeh of my 70-200/4 is better than that of the 70-300.
Oops, now I said I also have the 70-200/4, and I just said how I like to have just a middle of the road setup. :) But in my defence, the 70-200 is a lens I used on DX. When I got my D750, I wanted to have a lens that would give me the same reach, which is why I went for the 70-300. Also because with the 24-120, a rather large percentage of the 70-200's range is duplicated (on DX I used the 17-55/2.8, which left a small gap).
The issue is that if you want to get the same telelens reach on FX with the same quality, you typically end up with larger lenses, which I don't like. Part of me actually wants to go back to DX for that reason, and pick up a used D7500 and 12-24/4 or maybe Tamron 10-24. That camera works with SnapBridge too, so I don't need the Foolography dongle in my D750, which also means I could lose the L plate that I got to protect that dongle from bumps.
But... the Nikon ecosystem is more FX optimised.

One that got away from me that I will always regret is the original 4 megapixel Canon 1D. I picked it up secondhand, and it replaced a 60D I had been forced to sell about a month before then. I was not super happy with APS-C image quality at the time anyway, so this seemed like a chance to take, and it was only $100 from someone who clearly did not know what they had. As it turned out, this body had belonged to a press photographer and still had his copyright information in the EXIF data of the files. This copy had a 4 digit serial number and was earlier in sequence than the pre-production Japanese model DP Review had cited as generating the first sample images in the world. Both of those things from this camera's history made it cool for me, and this was the camera that taught me that megapixels did not really matter, and it was the camera that began my love affair with the 1D series ergonomics that continues to this day. I would eventually upgrade to a 5D Mark II (several of them, actually), but it was memories of the 1D that would cause me to upgrade from there to the original 1DX, possibly my favorite camera of all time.

I agree one hundred percent about the Z50! I read Ken Rockwell's write-up of it and marched right out and bought one. This is the camera that will still have a good name and a strong following ten or fifteen years from now. There are cameras from the past that have stood the test of time in this way, and not every year produces one. If you have a Z50, hang on to it as if your life depended on it.

I sold the Olympus 17mm f/1.2 MFT lens. I had been using the Panasonic G9 for my "webcam" with another lens. I sold both lenses, expected to use the Z7 for the webcam. But then I decided the G9 was better in that role, never moving. I would only get about $200-300 for it, so there was little point in selling it. So I kept looking until I found a used Olympus 17mm f/1.2 to use on the G9.
Selling the D850 has had zero regrets, the Z7II has met the needs.

The Z6 with the 24-70 f4s is the one that got away for me.. I just started shooting weddings at the time, and the prices of XQD cards were so damn HIGH, the amount of storage I needed to comfortably film a full 12hr wedding (yes I shoot video) costed more then the camera and lens combo I had, so I did what I didn't want to do, and switched to Sony A7III with tamron 28-75, just because of the cheap SD cards. Man.. I was a grown man, teared up about selling a freaking camera.. The new owner of my beloved Z6 felt super bad for me haha! After almost 3 years of building my Sony kit, adding A7IV, 17-28, 70-180 2.8s and so much more, I still missed that damn Z6! Sadly, I finally gave up waiting on Nikon to release a great hybrid Z6III with internal log and 10bit video, and was fed up with Sony's video limitations (yes sounds strange to many) and picked up Fuji X-H2s, that I really love so far, and yet, I still have the Z6 in the back of my mind LOL!

This was a timely topic for me because I just got my Nikon Zf this week and I am woefully selling my D750 to a photographer friend. When I got the D750 it was much coveted by me as an upgrade from my D300 so it has been my BABY since 2015, boy did I love having that camera! I feel much like you and Raymond did that it would be a crime to have it sitting on my shelf inactive and just for rare emergencies. I know my friend wants and needs it and this workhorse needs to be put to work! So I am doing it, I am going to sell it but I also anticipate Sellers Remorse going forward because there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with that camera, it was a great tool for me.

I have had four D500 cameras as backups to my D5's, now D6's and I had the Z7, Z9 and D850...sold all of those and love the D6's and D500. Every time I sold my D500, I regretted it enough to buy another one, do the same by selling it off and then getting another one, lol. So I get it, I wish I had my D4s still, I bought a mint/like new condition D4s with only 700 shots on the original shutter/camera body and was like new. I got a really good deal on it and therefor I sold it off for a profit to help make a sale as the buyer of a 400mm f/2.8G VR that I was selling to him...offered me $600 over what I paid for the D4s and therefor I sold it, regrettably. I will definitely buy another D4s some day when the right deal comes along. Just because the sensor is unique to me and I think quite a few others! You hear a lot about the D700 and image quality that certain sensors have or produce, although they're all CMOS and advanced, every camera/sensor has it's strengths and or weaknesses. However the D4s was the first without any, it has amazing low ISO dynamic range and incredible high ISO capabilities. It also has a unique look to the images, especially seen when using fast glass. I can only describe the look of D4/D4s/Df sensors as sharp where you want it, but just buttery smooth and amazing out of focus transitions or tonality. The D4s technically has a new sensor and is slightly different from the D4/Df and produces slightly sharper images and much much sharper video when compare to the original sensor, plus it has a new micro-lens array filter, new AD converter, SNR firmware and newer/faster processor. Nikon says it's a new sensor all together and I believe they did something different and therefor I feel the D4s is the one that got away. Even though I've had and used a few D4s's I still miss the IQ and files they produce. Now that they are so cheap used, it would be time to just buy one, but I would always rather buy better or newer glass than new camera's!

And I recently got a D2x just to see what a monster DSLR is like. So I only seem to buy Leigh and Raymond cast offs. If I went Z-mount, I’d probably buy a Z50. I regret selling the Nikon Z 40mm f/2 I made some very nice portraits with that lens. It was the third lens I bought after buying the nikon zfc with the 28mm f/2.8. I sold my Nikon zfc and three lenses last year too invest more into one camera system (Fujifilm for me) and used it to fund the X-H2 and a 23mm 1.4 LM WR. Of all the camera's I owned I regret selling the Ricoh GR. It had a distinct look for images especially for street and seascapes.
But things change again and I am looking to get back in another eco system. Now saving to buy a sony a6400 or a7c with 28mm f/2 or 40mm 2.5 probably though the temptation to get fullframe with z5 or z6 and that 40mm f/2 again is also still there. If only Nikon made some smaller bodies like Sony has.

I mean I could have waited for the Zf as that would have probably suited my needs too, but I had also bought into the Z6 II 3 years ago thinking it was significantly better for AF than the original Z6, and while it is, I felt it wasn't worth the upgrade in the end, but when the Z8 came around, I knew it would pretty much be a buy-once and forget about it deal. Yes it's more painful financially but I won't be upgrading cameras for quite some time now (thus probably being cheaper in the long run than playing the "what if" game with future iterations of Z6/Z7 bodies).

Stupidly I sold a Nikon 28Ti back in the day when digital was coming in and I thought the market for film cameras would drop through the floor. What a fool, try buying one now and see what it costs!

Never, never sell camera gear. Since 1979, I have held onto my Nikon F2A I bought in Japan. I also bought the companion FE2. I have considered selling it but laziness and my affection of this piece of history said NO. Never sell anything gear you love to use.

I can never understand why people have more than one brand of main gear, why? Too much money to burn?

I'm from the good old film days. I shot 4X5 Speed Graphic. Leica M3. I developed it in Microdol X and D 76. Loaded my own film. Tri X and Kodacolor. Printed pictures in a darkroom. Sorry Raymond I haven't a clue why you like film camera. You send the film away.. The price is not nice to buy film or develop . I had the Z 50 and it was great. Sold it. It was money on my shelf. I am know with the Nikon Z7 ll. I love it. Are you guys opening up a camera store to get rid of that old stuff. Well to end this. I don't miss the smell of developer or fixer. Film is in the past for me.I like to look to future.
