no!! i had the same thing happen with my x3 and i never use it anymore. it’s a shame because the shots are so cool. editing the video is also annoying if you don’t use premiere pro @-@
I think my biggest regret gear wise is buying without renting first. I made a lot of purchasing errors and once I started renting things first it was a game changer. Now if something is over about 1k and it’s reasonable to rent and try first I always do. It’s saved me a lot of money!
I can't agree more about the gimbals, I used to use them but not anymore. Especially for travel vlogs. I guess they are great of you are in one location with crews and want to make a promo type of videos not a vlog. They are heavy and take so much space in my bag
I'm with you, I have a lot of gear that I thought I would love but just didn't use enough. However, I still do use and love the DJI Pocket 2. I am a full time television producer and I even use it in my professional work. It's been great for my outdoor/ camping channel because it is so small and light. Thanks for the video.
I have the DJI Pocket, but I bought it for a very specific use. Trail running! As I visit national parks I trail run in some of them, and the pocket was the perfect use case for filming those runs. The compactness and ruggedness of a GoPro with a gimbal!
I have a DJI OM5, DJI RSC2, and Insta360 X3 that I try to take everywhere but never end up using them too! I was convinced I wanted them soooo much and they just sit around. I'm trying to use the OM5 more often for shots of me taking photos since it can follow me when I move but I still haven't done it even though I carry it with me all of the time. Then there's the struggle when I consider selling any of this "useless" gear and I always convince myself not to let anything go because... "what if I need it."
The DJI Osmo Pocket is one that I remember every photography UA-camr talking about the day it launched and then never heard about it or saw anyone using it in a video ever again.
As a relatively new photographer I don't have enough gear to really regret anything yet. I bought a used A6000 to learn, practice and grow with and paired them to my Dad's old Minolta AF lenses with an adapter. Bought a couple used lenses to go with it (50mm 1.8 and 28-70mm) and just recently bought a used A7r III. The one item I did buy that I didn't (don't) use as much as I thought I would is the DJI Action 2 camera. I picked up a suction cup mount when I bought it and strapped it to the hood of my car for what I thought would be amazing hyperlapse videos driving through the mountains. After the second trip however a random rock completely destroyed the second screen. DJI refresh replaced it and I was ready to mount it back on but the replacement unit they sent me was defective. They did replace it with a brand new unit but after that it just sat on a shelf until this past weekend. Perhaps I will start putting it to use again more regularly. We'll see on my next drive to Portland!
I spent a long time trying to shoot video without a gimbal. It all sucked. I finally got a dji r3 and i use it all the time. I did end up making a dedicated video bag, but i dont find it inconvenient. Now i get lots of great video. One of my best buys.
Pre-pandemic I had a 70-200 2.8 and thought, thats all I'll ever need for a telephoto lenses. I was shooting a lot of events and stuff indoor and so the 2.8 was crucial. During the pandemic... pretty much no events happening and I started shifting to shooting wildlife and landscapes/cityscapes and realized I no longer needed 2.8 but was finding the 200mm as very limited. Sold it and bought the 100-400 and absolute loved it and the teach and it's versatility. I did find later, once things started to open up again, that when I did travel to more urban areas or do the occasional indoor event, the 100-400 was overkill and I started missing that 2.8 aperture... but I didn't want to spend over $2000 for either of the Sony 70-200 2.8 and so I went with the much cheaper, smaller and lighter, but almost as good, Tamron 70-180 2.8. I also did buy a Sony 1.4x teleconverter which I don't use as much but I still try to use it when I go to airshows but if I had the chance to do it again, I probably wouldn't have purchased it.
This is a great video and I enjoyed watching. It makes me think about all the gear I’ve bought (and sold) over the past several years. I can honestly say that I haven’t really regretted buying any of my gear but there have been many things that I’ve kept for a while and then sold. The Pocket camera is probably the one item that I could never see myself using. It always seems very redundant to me since my action cameras could easily do what the pocket camera could do. Thanks for the video!
Your story with the gimbals sounds very familiar to me. I now have three, one broke, the second was actually too small. But as well as it works, the whole fumbling until the camera is balanced gets on your nerves. When DJI recently released a new one, I was thinking again. But I was adamant I didn't buy it. Sometimes you actually want to make your work easier, but then realize later that it's easier to walk around without too much equipment.
Gear regrets: I just sold the chrome C-stand I bought 3 years ago and used 2-3 times total. So big, so heavy, and that chrome grease got me every time. I mostly just shoot simple cooking videos so a basic tripod is all I need! Would be nice to get one that shoots overhead, but it needs to be compact and not get in my way when I’m motoring around the kitchen!
Hi Allison. There is just something about gimbals and cameras. Well, I felt I needed one for my Sony A7. Yep. I had to have it. I bought it, balanced it, stabilized it, took some great shots walking down the hallway at home with it all the to the kitchen! Fantastic. That was the only time I ever used it. Too big, too heavy, too obvious, too hard to set up. 3 years later it is collecting dust.
Oh the Weebill S! I bought it the moment it was launched. This was my first gimbal purchase ever and I too expected it to be of regular use. The results produced from it are very good but the setup time is not worth it if you're a solo filmmaker. I still occasionally carry it on some of my travels but going handheld provides a lot of freedom when it comes to variety in shots captured, especially during hikes. This is why I tried my friend's smartphone gimbal before making another not-so-useful purchase 🤣 Its only after making these purchases do we realize how much less gear we need to make good content.
I bought my gimbal back in like 2022… I’ve only used it like 4 times on gigs. Even though I’m proficient at using one and know how to use it perfectly, it just doesn’t inspire me to shoot. Handheld, steadi/glidecam, easyrigs, and tripod shots are where it’s at 🤙🤙🤙
This video is me. every chapter is the same thought process I've had with gear, telephoto lens, pocket camera, etc. I feel the same about gimbals but even now I'm wondering if the DJI RS3 mini is worth it for travel. Endless cycle of being a gear junkie
Great vid. Thinking about much of the stuff you’re talking about. I travel full time and vlog. I like the spontaneity of having a camera without a Humble but the shaky footage can look a bit rubbish. I suppose I need to work on stabilising organically.
So many: Olympus EM10MK3, Fujifilm XT1/XT2/XT4, all the Viltrox lenses for the Fujis. They are fantastic pieces of equipment no doubt about them, but the image quality from my Nikon Z5 is what I wish I had started with.
@allisonAnders I get you!! i am a middle age man and I have being taking pictures maybe way before or just around you were born so I did 35 mm & 120 in the film days, and now digital and maybe soon mirrorless.... so this means I have gear that I no longer use and I still love but if I ever sell everything or loss it, I will never buy again. So I really get you! Thanks for sharing
I’m with you on gimbals. I’ve been circling a DJI like a hungry shark for the longest time, but I just know that exactly what you said would happen, would happen: when that street shot comes up it’s going to be a choice between fitting the gimbal or missing the moment.
The widdle primes are great for fitting the whole camera in my purse. 70-200 is a sports and weddings kinda zoom range. I use it on the daily but on APs-c Fuji, where it starts to work for Street and wildlife…further out. And yeah blue hour is the time for this length, for sure
You would make a great guy, we buy everything thinking it'll make us better - it's a guy thing. Yup had the DJI, Yup had the 360, Yup DJI Osmo pocket, Yup sold all my primes - you're right they're redundant. My go-to is the Canon 16-35. So my 1-lens system is: 24-105-4.0L, 2-lens system: 16-35-2.8 & 70-200-4.0 & 1.6 converter. I shoot night so I use a irex 15-2.4 for one body and my 16-35-2.8 for the other body - I'll leave one camera out on the tripod clicking off star trails and I'll take off with the other one. "If they would update it I would buy another one" Nice quote Allison... As always Safe Travels!
With the 70-200 lens your getting better quality images than any of the other lens you have showed us. The thing that people don't think about is why they are travelling. What for and how. If you want tack sharp images then the weight is necessary. However if your going for fun and want some cool shots for social media . Then the weight is not needed. I carry around a Canon 5D3 and 70-300 F4 lens. I settle for no less than what this lens produces.
I bought the Weebil S and took it for 5 weeks through europe. Definitely used it a lot... footage looks amazing but damn you get called out everytime you pass through security gates at...airports, museums. The thing is really hard to store in your camera bag. It pokes things when you strap it to the outside of your bag. It is quite heavy... You need to bring the gimbal battery charger too. And of course... it is somewhat heavy. I ALSO have the Sony 28mm f2.0, you just dont need it. Get the sony 24 - 70 GM and be done with it. Not to mention the 35mm f1.8 looks better anyways.
Great Video, I have spent much more than you on a Gimbal, a DJI RS 3 pro, the challenge of just getting it going for the first time put me off it! it still sits in the corner of my lounge haunting me! most of my lenses are fully used. I'm interested in your 360 camera which i have never bought! I tend to buy lenses with lots of thought and/or 2nd hand! great Video, and I am with you!
Gimbal yess...I bought G6 Max, took it once on a trip. The footage was great, really smooth but, yes, too much setup on the go. Especially with families, who knows nothing (or care) about video quality.. :-D Now it's just sitting in my drawer. Lens, Sigma 16mm 1.4. nice fast lens, but too big for casual outing. Ended up using the 22mm F2 instead. like only 1/3 of the sigma size. I do have DJI pocket 2, one of the best buy for me. Simple, no setting up. Image quality is on par with my phone, but much better in low light.
Same exact experience with the Weebill S. I spent a million hours perfecting getting my camera on that gimbal, but then spent a lot more hours perfecting pretty much the same shots handheld. Every once in awhile I'll use it to get a shot when I'm maybe in my car or something like that, but honestly I only use it because I feel like I should probably use it since I own it. I definitely don't need it.:-)
I agree with you on all these things except , the Weebill s has helped me so much , you can take it apart in sections , fits pretty nice in my backpack and can get fast at balancing the more you do it , I can balance mine in about 5 minutes , but different strokes for different folks , I bet I got some stuff collecting dust that you may find useful 😂
Yes! I actually have memory of the balancing points on the scales of Weebill S for different lens combinations. This helps reduce setup time by a lot. Also, Weebill S has strong motors. I've switched lenses at times of urgency without rebalancing the gimbal and it handled perfectly.
@@KumaraBhargava I think the Weebill s is becoming a dinosaur anyway , I heard the rs3 pro is way easier to balance , I get it , it’s a big , it definitely draws eyes when I break it out in public lol , some guy ask me if I was a paparazzi the other day and what celebrity I was waiting for 😏
@@Tonellacam yes. The way DJI is advancing tech, the Weebill S does feels outdated. Weebill 3 seems quite good and they've added some ergonomic feature as well like wrist support. The next Weebill has even better ergonomic support. Even though it is compact, the adjustment wheel on the left of the Weebill S sticks out. I'd have liked if they would've added some functionality to it like controlling any of the axes instead of using the joystick. So I removed the wheel and sealed the area. Now it packs much better. Also, getting mistaken for a paparazzi is hilarious.!
I'd say the DJI RS3 Mini might be a decent option to try with a Sony body and the Tamron 28-75 lens, if you do want a decent lightweight gimbal. I use Panasonic bodies, and the IBIS is so good that I prefer to use that over Gimbals (unless in a jumpy vehicle or sth). Also the Tamron 70-180 f/2.8 could have been a decent alternative to the Sony 70-200 f/4. The new 2.8 seems fantastic though :)
Excellent video topic, I really don't want to get into how much gear I buy just keep it in a box somewhere. Speaking of insta360 , this camera has different issues with each person, I bought my insta360 x one back in 2018 and never got scratched to this day lucky 😅. However, many times I took great shots that cannot be replicated again just to find out the camera never saved the photo or deleted it 😢
Yeah had the Rokinon 12mm F2 for my Sony a6000. Only used it like 5 times in 3 years, always loved the shots when I did use it though. Sold it and bought the Sigma 16mm 1.4 because I thought, I'm just not using it, because I only shoot portraits/events and no landscapes. Well, the sigma barely gets more action haha
I can totally relate to this video! My regrets are my gimbal I bought for my mirrorless when I travel and my 24-105mm f/4, I wish it was a 2.8! I'm always battling with the weight of all the gear I want ☹️
A 2.8 will be much heavier than the f/4. I have a Tamron 28-105 f/2.8 and that is much heavier than my Canon 24-105 f/4, and it doesn't even have VC/IS/OS/VR/OSS. If weight is an issue for you, than you wouldn't want a 24-105/2.8, no matter who makes it.
The gimbals while they produce amazing still footage, like you said, there i just no way to keep stopping and taking it out of the backpack. I probably wouldn't see half of the things I do if I stopped to take out a gimbal every time !
Thanks for your views Allison .I was a big fan of OSMO Pocket before I jumped to SonyA7s3 ..But yes in my last video when I was trying to vlog, while walking into Arniston Cave ,South Africa ,I tried to use the Sony A7S3 with GM lens and Rodes vid 2 mounted on it but believe me I was stressed because of its weight for my hand and not gettign any stabilization .I was so used to osmo pocket for my volgging ..so latter in that video i stopped using the A7s3 and started using the osmopocket specially when i was inside the cave ..But yes the footage of A7S3 is way better than Osmopocket . So i carry both of them and i use as the situation demand . Regarding gimbal I have DJIRSC2 but i hardly use except some real estate shoot or a planned shoot of model .I do agree with you that it is a challenge to set up your camera on it and then balance and then use it .And for every lens you need to remove and again balance ..So I carry the DJI RSC2 only when I have very planned video shoot and I knew what things i am going to cover but during my travel videos it is a no for me because of time consumption in balancing it and also carrying the heavy setup .This is my current situation being a small UA-camr from India staying in South Africa.
I'm on my 3rd gimbal, and I'm not sure why I keep buying them, lol! It really is just too much of a hassle to take the time to set up, and without much practice, I can't even get very good looking shots with it.
very cool video. I have purchased Ronin 3 Gimbal which is awesome, heavy, big, a pain to balance so don't use. my buddy has small one so will try that and see if I like. Thanks for this video. If there are more items in your collection you wish to share that you don't use I think a video like this is SERIOUSLY worth while since it might make us rethink for the reasons you present not to get or get something different. VERY COOL VIDEO!
I felt the struggle with your telephoto lenses. Got myself a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 and didn’t really used it up to this point. It’s really heavy and the usecases are very specific. I have a hard time including it when I shoot… thinking about selling it again to maybe get something like a 24-70…
I also have the 28-75mm and the Sony FE 2/28 but just the fact the FE 2/28 is so light and small make it worth it. I dont want to carry a big lense when hiking or just doing street photography. Image quality is a also a lot sharper because its a prime lense.
HELP, Allison, I have 2 Sony cameras I bought years ago that I love.: a550 and the a77ii. I have only 3 lenses: Sony 18-55 SAM; Sony 11-18 and the Sony 18-250. I’m getting ready to do a 14 Alaska cruise and want a more telephoto lens. I heard the Tamron 50-400 is great. My question is my cameras are both A mounted lenses and the Tamron is an E mounted, so it there an adapter I could use?????
I feel your pain with the Insta360 One X2. I bought the One X and vowed I wouldn't buy another until they changed the lenses and made them user replaceable, which is actually quite simple, like they did with their Go line. Of course, I couldn't help myself when the X3 came out and got one, but I still feel they need to make those lenses replaceable and I hope they start doing it with their future ones.
360 is nice but can’t fit in the whole video with Sony camera clips…. I agree with you About gimbal, even with quick release system very rare to use when travel unless for motion hyperlapse…
Sometimes I'll order two of something if I don't know which one will be best for me, then send one back. But, sometimes I end up keeping both of them and use them for different purposes. And, of course, some things are more useful than others, or useful longer than others, or you just don't like as much as others. But, the only thing I remember buying that I totally regretted was an expensive micro cassette recorder. I thought that I would use it to take notes of places and things I photographed. Never used it and returned it.
Why so many lenses?!?!?😂😂😂❤❤ But I with you on the smart phone gimble. Purchased the same one you have, but never use it. Like you, I prefer using my camera and lens body to take my take my photos…
I have the Insta360 1 inch. Great cam but my gripe is I don’t do anything with the footage. You can’t just easily watch it. Needs to be edited than exported. I thought I was gonna gonna watch it on my oculus lol
Insta 360 lens scratch really easily and the lens guards absolutely destroy video quality. It's really my only knock on the camera. I wish they would make them detachable or something so you can buy replacements without having to buy a whole new camera
Yes! If you could just buy spare lenses that would be so much better. It was $200 to replace the first set... that's over half the cost of the camera itself. At some point it's just not worth it to keep replacing them.
@@allisonanderson Feel the same way. Love the features but if I have to replace it more than once then I can live without it. Maybe the next version will address this as sooo many people share this complaint
Mirrorless has unlocked a whole generation of creators that have no idea what carrying around a 1 series camera with built in vertical grip and a 70-200 2.8, spare batteries, other lens, flash ect for ten hours feels like. Bless their heart. So when I hear people talk about weight, I just giggle.
well, I use MFT and a lens equivalent to that weighs less than 2 pounds... and after climbing a couple of volcanoes with that on my back, it's appreciated that it's lightweight xD... But on the other hand, that means I end up carrying more stuff, and I always end up with about 30 pounds of gear on my back (between my wife's cameras/lenses and mine).
When you come Pakistan ?😊 Today I watch your Taiwan video and I am impressed after that I watched your 17 videos without any gap. Amazing GOD bless you
Gimbals. I came clean with myself about them years ago. Hate them. Pain in the ass. If I can’t smoothly foot a scene then I just don’t shoot the scene. That’s that.
YOU AREE 100% RIGHT ABOUT INSTA 360, COMPANY IS SO GREEDY, THEY JUST SIMPLY CAN MAKE SCREW ON LENCE, KNOWING IT GET SCATCH IN A MINUTE, lens guard are useless muddy quality, just to suck some extra money on top ( but they don't care consumer and very bad customer service also ) love your honest video
It's not my fault the lenses always scratch, right? Right?? 😬
no😅
Yah, thats fault of the stuff that's scratching the lens😂
@@Dean-hg3ry thank you I agree
You know they make cases for the Insta360 right? Everyone puts a case for their cellphone, a camera should be no different.

We do this too! We rent through KEH. They have an exchange program too, but we've never used that.
I really have a lot of admiration for all the camera related content you share it's always insightful!

Ur voice and ur describing content every video is marvelous i wish u give u more explore vedio
I have the Webill S residing in my closet. Same reason as you, too cumbersome to set up for just a few seconds of B-roll plus the attention you get.
However, many times I took great shots that cannot be replicated again just to find out the camera never saved the photo or deleted it 😢
mine would be my speed light. I don't us it for travel, ever. but when I'm shooting events, it comes in clutch.
Gear travel light I believe I have that mastered after years of practice. Ask away if you like.
@@MrPhilbautista that is interesting. guess it does not bother me. thanks for your message!!
The gimbals while they produce amazing still footage, like you said, there i just no way to keep stopping and taking it out of the backpack. I probably wouldn't see half of the things I do if I stopped to take out a gimbal every time !
Hey Allison Anderson like your videos how did u learn to make this kind of quality videos ?
Regarding gimbal I have DJIRSC2 but i hardly use except some real estate shoot or a planned shoot of model .I do agree with you that it is a challenge to set up your camera on it and then balance and then use it .And for every lens you need to remove and again balance ..So I carry the DJI RSC2 only when I have very planned video shoot and I knew what things i am going to cover but during my travel videos it is a no for me because of time consumption in balancing it and also carrying the heavy setup .This is my current situation being a small UA-camr from India staying in South Africa.
via what medium ?
@xAllisonAnderson3 where
I'm on my 3rd gimbal, and I'm not sure why I keep buying them, lol!
Good to know. I've considered buying a gimbal but doubt I'd use it either on the go.
I have the same set except the 70-200. Insta 360 x2 with scratches. 28mm sony. Mobile gimbal.
Thank you for sharing camera datils👍
My insta360 has scratches on it, but it has become my favorite camera
I love the weebil S and Insta 360 one x 2. Their awesome.
I love your all videos it's amazing ❤
I love you Allison ❤🎉
Why so many lenses?!?!?😂😂😂❤❤
But I with you on the smart phone gimble. Purchased the same one you have, but never use it. Like you, I prefer using my camera and lens body to take my take my photos…
Amazing information Your Gear is so Good
That's why I bought m43, light weight and IQ is good enough. IBIS is so good that you rarely need a gimbal.
I have the Insta360 1 inch. Great cam but my gripe is I don’t do anything with the footage. You can’t just easily watch it. Needs to be edited than exported. I thought I was gonna gonna watch it on my oculus lol
I also love the small and lightweight 28mm f2 lol. Oh well. We all create in a different way
I guarantee you the Sony (which isn't my favorite brand) 28 f2 is a better lens for rendering and sharpness that the Tamron at the 28mm end.
I only use small and lightweight things. Simple as that. Like Pocket 2.
Same with my 360, not the actual camera tho but the underwater casing. And that was within a month only after purchasing it
We Also love your VDO ❤❤❤
❤hey Allison Anderson like your videos #quality content love from India
Thank you!
@@allisonanderson ❤️
I don’t own a lot of gear but the 2 prime lenses I own a 50mm & 85mm I never use.
As long the Insta360 lens are not cracked, light scratches can be fixed with a Dremel and polishing compound, no need to change lens.
I really like ur video since covid times 1st saw the alaska vid the Joshua... They were great , so please increas length of vid or make 2 vid 🙏🏻
Found your channel yesterday by watching the Antarctica vlog! Awesome! Can i put a ring on your finger ?
Great video! So you didn’t get sucked into the drones? 😎
I need the Gimbal. Can you share :)
nice cameras, next vlog would be more action packed more power and stay safe.,
You are SPOT ON! Gimbals are so overrated.... yet I still want them?! Make it stop :)
Keep up the great work!

Maybe the next version will address this as sooo many people share this complaint
hahaha so true i bought gimbal, insta 360 thinking the same, but i dont know why i dont use it much
3:10 yeah… like the go pro Max lense mod is susceptible to the same
Please once came to Varanasi for travelling.I assure you will not regret...
You should visit our country Nepal once ❤❤❤ you’ll really love the beauty of natural Nepal
you can buy lens cover for the insta 360, 2:10
Insta360 X2s are crazy easy to scratch. There are covers though.
Lots of love from Kerala ❤

Mirrorless has unlocked a whole generation of creators that have no idea what carrying around a 1 series camera with built in vertical grip and a 70-200 2.8, spare batteries, other lens, flash ect for ten hours feels like. Bless their heart. So when I hear people talk about weight, I just giggle.
well, I use MFT and a lens equivalent to that weighs less than 2 pounds... and after climbing a couple of volcanoes with that on my back, it's appreciated that it's lightweight xD...
But on the other hand, that means I end up carrying more stuff, and I always end up with about 30 pounds of gear on my back (between my wife's cameras/lenses and mine).
haha, I'm still one of those creators. I use a 5d iii with battery grip and 70-200 2.8. it kills my arms but absolutely worth it
Gimbal and Osmo pocket for me, also drone but the new mavic 3 pro has me lie 😭
When you come Pakistan ?😊
Today I watch your Taiwan video and I am impressed after that I watched your 17 videos without any gap.
I’ll take the 70-200 F4 please and thank you. 🥲 Awesome video!
Scratching lens has never been this funny😅😅
I bought a lens protector for Insta 360. :).
