What is that popping sound often heard, but not always heard, as the feedback ramps up?

if i dont play a tone or chord before engaging the feedback will i get any sound or do i need to play something for it to feedback

It creates a sine wave (I think) based on what you put into it. If you play nothing, you get nothing out of it 👍

Nope. You would need something like an Ebow, sustainiaic, or natural feedback to do that. Something to keep the string vibrating. This will go for however long your string will sustain. A few seconds? Yes. 30 seconds? Probably not.
