I'm the kid he's talking about! Kenny used to let me in the back if I did some dishes or feed his cat. It was my brother Mathew who invented the Mac N' Cheese Pancakes though. He hates that I get the credit😆. Miss you Kenny!!
Went there a few times. One day, he looked tired and sat in his lazy-boy. I ordered (from his son) a chicken and cashew dish. He said "Dad, you need to make the dish". I went up to Kenny and said I'd order something different so he can rest and relax. He thanked me for my kindness and made the dish anyhow. He was a cool guy and I still watch "I Like KIlling Flies" on UA-cam.
Kenny seems like a person who has cracked the secret to Living a calm life. Love him.
Gordon Ramsay would have a stroke if he saw that menu.
R.I.P. Kenny... truly one of a kind and a NYC legend.
Kenny looks like he knows wtf he's talking about
I was one of Kenny's vendors in the late 80's and well into the 90's. I loved watching he and Eve with their kids in the restaurant. He was a madman, but so real and unapologetic. I would often just sit and talk with him and try to soak up his wacky wisdom. Was so sad to hear of his and Eve's deaths! Even though Kenny had no formal training, many of my other customers worshipped him and wanted to learn from him. He was a true New York original!

Well, its 1am and I'm watching Conan make pancakes.
I got to meet Kenny Shopsin once, at his restaurant in Essex Market. We approached him, and told him we were fans of his cookbook. I was a little nervous, thinking that at any moment he would throw us out! He was warm and smiling, and we had a friendly conversation. He was really nice, and asked questions about us, and I was star-struck! 🤩
The book is awesome, and his kids are keeping the menu alive.

Eating at the restaurant’ Bedford St location was something fantastically unique. Today Shopsin’s is still going strong at Essex Market on the Lower East Side. They are open on certain days and only until about 3PM.
Never had the good fortune to met Kenny or eat at Shopsin’s, but his cookbook is a wonderfully designed and beautifully written guide to food, life, and relationships; this snarky little segment doesn’t do justice to his profound contributions, both philosophical and culinary. Get the book, watch “I like Killing Flies” (on UA-cam)and may his and Eve’s memories be for a blessing.

i just searched for Kenny and just found out he died at 2018 and this program was in 2008. Feels so sad about how time flies so fast
watching this right after the one he did with gordon ramsey is Jarring. wow
