Tbh, SAO was extremely hyped up prior to it's release. It was the first of its genre to introduce a modern isekai adaptation. Millions of people were looking forward to it, and guess what, it was fantastic. The first Arc of season one is nostalgic. Then, the second Arc came and oof.... It just went downhill and started to get bad rep. It's a shame though, because SAO had the potential to be HUGE. Now, anytime someone says, "I like SAO" they are seen as a freak because all they remember is the second Arc when Kirito's cousin was into him (virtually) and cried, "incest, incest, incest" for years and years. People never really watched SAO again, but in my opinion, the newer releases are actually not that bad.
It dropped off but I watched season two waiting to see how his family with asuna would develop, so I guess it was a good hook, after that I just kept watching cus he's a cool character even if he's kind of a mary sue. My favorite part was where he was hunting for a dragon thing with the female smith and they ended up kinda sleeping together or whatever because you have those events in real life too where you are in a relationship but then stuff happens and you kinda fall for another girl too and your feelings are all kinda confused. Some parts of SEO especially in the first season are uniquely vivid, memorable. I think it deserves it's popularity.
